Since I mentioned the Windows flaw in my last editorial a fix has been released. Here are the details from Kim Komando --> PATCH AVAILABLE FOR WINDOWS FLAW; UPDATE NOW! Microsoft has released a patch for a critical flaw discovered last week. The flaw could allow a hacker to take control of your computer via a malicious image file. Microsoft planned to release the patch next Tuesday as part of its monthly update. But testing was completed early. You should protect your computer by running Windows Update immediately. The patch is available for Windows XP and 2000, but not 98 and ME. Even though these versions potentially are affected, Microsoft has not identified any attacks on them. So it is not issuing an update. Last week I recommended disabling a .DLL file for a temporary fix. That works in Windows ME, but not Windows 98. If you use Windows ME, click Start>>Run. Enter regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll and press OK twice. If you are using Windows 98, your anti-virus software probably will protect you. Keep it updated. People with XP and 2000 should update. Then, you can re-enable the .DLL file. (if you disabled it) To do that, click Start>>Run. Enter regsvr32 shimgvw.dll and click OK twice.
