The Florida-born Toale worked as a model before landing a supporting role in "A Streetcar Named Desire" at Broadway's Roundabout Theater alongside Natasha Richardson and John C. Reilly. "In the search for Aquaman, we saw over 400 people in England, Australia, Canada and several U.S. cities," Gough said. "We saw Will's tape over Christmas, and he was the only guy we took to the network." A pilot will shoot in March, probably in Miami. Series is expected to be a signature offering next fall for the network and Warner Bros. TV. Rosario Dawson seduced by glamour of comics Press Release Actress Rosario Dawson, star of "SIN CITY", "RENT", "CLERKS 2" and "MiB2" teams with writer David Atchison and artist Tony Shasteen this spring to launch the Occult Crimes Taskforce, a groundbreaking new comic book miniseries co-created by Dawson herself. The series marks Dawson's first foray into the comic book market. The Occult Crimes Taskforce follows rookie Detective Sophia Ortiz's quest to save New York City from an unholy threat and solve the mystery of her father's murder. The storytelling skills Dawson has gained acting in some of Hollywood's hottest productions combined with the writing talents of David Atchison and the thematic art of Tony Shasteen will create a comic book experience unlike anything on the shelves. The Occult Crimes Taskforce is a true melding of film and comic books combining the sensibilities, drama and tension of film and with the wildly imaginative, epic style of comic books. Inspired by Dawson herself, Sophia Ortiz has a depth most comic book characters cannot possess as her actions, feelings and motivations have been closely modeled after Dawson's own. "I've read comic books my entire life, and as a fan who has watched the comic book industry evolve and gain the respect it deserves from the world of entertainment, I'm excited to take on the role of comic book co-creator," said Rosario Dawson. Speakeasy's "The Hunger" Cover Artist Tony Shasteen will illustrate the series. Dawson continued, "I love Tony's visuals and David has come up with some really imaginative, off the wall stuff. I think we're going to turn out a great product. I'm very excited; I can't stop talking about the book." "Rosario Dawson is an artist in the purest sense. She can act, sing, as well as write. She's just an all around creative person. We are thrilled to collaborate with Rosario, David and Tony on this one of a kind project. The Rosario Dawson fans of the world are in for a treat and I'm sure many others will soon be captivated by this truly unique comic book project," said Adam Fortier, Speakeasy Comics CEO. Brave Canadians seek to honor their own Man, we're all about Canada today! Diana Tamblyn wrote to tell us that the Shuster Awards, which are presented to the best in Canadian Cartooning, are seeking to compile a conprehensive list of potential nominees: For this year's Shuster Awards, we're currently compiling a list of all eligible Canadian creators which will be used as the basis for selection by the Nominating Committee for the 2005 categories (artist, writer, cartoonist, publisher). I'm hoping The Beat readers can help. We're looking for suggestions to ensure that the list is as complete as possible. Submissions for additions should be sent to Kevin Boyd at: kevin@torontocomicon.com +++++ From Newsarama at http://www.Newsarama.com/ BOB GREENBERGER LET GO BY DC Reported by a number of locations (including the Marvel Masterworks Resource Page), Newsarama has confirmed that Bob Greenberger has been let go by DC. For the last four years, Greenberger had been the collected editions editor at DC, overseeing the Archives line of high-end reprints. Previously, Greenberger worked at Marvel for a year in much the same capacity, and, together with editor Tom Brevoort, brought the Masterworks line back to the forefront of Marvel's publishing endeavors. Prior to that, Greenberger was a long-time DC editor, managing the Star Trek line when the property was at DC. While details have not been mentioned by either party, sources suggest that the recent, five mis-printed pages in Golden Age Hawkman Archives may have precipitated the change in status. Greenberger is also an accomplished author of several Star Trek novels, and is currently working on Star Trek: Corps of Engineers. MAXWELL PULLS STRANGEWAYS FROM SPEAKEASY At his blog, Matt Maxwell announced that he has pulled Strangeways from Speakeasy. Maxwell wrote: I've pulled Strangeways from production and have worked out a release from my contract with Speakeasy. That means I currently don't have a publisher. I don't expect this situation to remain such for too particularly long, but as always I'll post news here first. My gratitude to Adam Fortier for understanding where I was coming from in having to make this tough choice. The primary motivation was nothing more than making what I thought was the best choice for the project in light of continued troubles on the part of the publisher. I wish them only the best of luck in navigating this rough patch. They put out one of my favorite books currently (that being Elk's Run, which everyone should read, but nobody is), as well as the next couple issues of Rocketo, which I'm a great fan of. As for everyone who's reviewed the book, I can only say that I'm sorry I felt this step necessary. Your work and support of the book are particularly appreciated, and I can only hope that goodwill continues on and supports the next incarnation of Strangeways. I will try my best to work out something for the retailers who stuck their necks and dollars out and ordered the book essentially blind. Again, I can only hope that they'll order it once again when it's resolicited. I've got mixed feelings about this. Frankly, I was hoping that this wouldn't have to happen, but what's done now is done. Time to move forward. NEW COMICS DELAYED FOR MIDWEST, 01.11.06 For roughly 200 retailers across the Midwest (as well as their customers looking for their weekly fix), there was no joy in the comic shops yesterday. For the third out of four weeks, new comics did not arrive as scheduled, due to shipping problems. Comics are scheduled to reach stores today. Retailers were notified of the problem Tuesday in an e-mail from Diamond which read: Diamond customers serviced by the Memphis Distribution Center who receive their shipments via TWO-DAY UPS should be aware that, due to a carrier truck breaking down, this week's shipment will arrive on THURSDAY, JANUARY 12, instead of Wednesday. Diamond apologizes for any inconvenience this error may cause. Also, Diamond recognizes that this is third time in recent weeks in which shipments have been delayed. While this is unfortunate, Memphis has a history of on-time delivery, and we are committed to ensuring that shipments arrive on time going forward. Retailers with further questions about this announcement should contact their Customer Service Representative. Following the flow of comics, after being printed at Quebecor in Montreal, comics are shipped to Diamond's Plattsburgh, NY warehouse. From there, shipments leave on Monday morning, headed to Diamond's Memphis, Tennessee warehouse, where it is picked up by UPS at a scheduled time. "The truck broke down," said Diamond's Roger Fletcher, explaining what happened this week. "Everything was pulled and packed in Plattsburgh, but on the way to Memphis, the truck broke down - I believe it was something with the fuel injector." The news didn't sit well with retailers throughout the Midwest who are serviced by the Memphis warehouse. Of a handful of retailers contacted by Newsarama about the missed ship, frustration ruled, and a financial hit for the week was expected. The change in income, retailers explained, was due in part to some stores having extra staff on Wednesdays to process the new book shipment, as well as customers having to make a return trip to their shop - the third time such a trip has been needed in the past four weeks. Fletcher, who indicated Diamond had been hearing from upset retailers all week about the missed shipment, said that the distributor was as frustrated as the retailers, given that Memphis has had years of on-time delivery, but, as said, in the last four weeks, has seen three problems. "We're talking to the trucking company, and have expressed our concerns to them, and hope to have something worked out quickly in regards to making sure the shipments reach Memphis on time," Fletcher said. Editor Mark Siegal wants to publish a line of literate graphic novels that includes books for all age groups from eight-year-olds to adults -- and his list displays an impressive international flavor with books from European and Asian (in FSB's fall lineup) creators. First Second Books has six graphic novels shipping in May followed by a second wave of titles in the fall. First up is an ingenious volume by French artist Lewis Trondheim. A.L.I.E.E.E.N.($12.95) is a 96-page full color volume, which appeared on earth under very strange circumstances. Written in an alien language (with an alien alphabet) this is one of those "wordless" graphic novels that depends entirely on the visual -- of course some readers well-versed in Klingon and other extra galactic languages may want to use this volume as their very own Rosetta Stone. Eddie Campbell's work is well known to the American audience thanks to his collaboration with Alan Moore on From Hell. FSB will publish his newest graphic novel, The Fate of the Artist ($15.95), a 96-page full color inquiry into the author's sudden disappearance, which makes use of all sorts of interesting movie and comic book related techniques including the newspaper comic strip, fumetti, and a Citizen Kane/The Killers-like hunting down of the Eddie's acquaintances, who provide a mosaic-like portrait of the artist. Grady Klein, the creator of The Lost Colony ($14.95), has a background in animation and he brings a fluid cartoon-like style to this audacious tale of a mysterious island off the coast of 19th Century America. Klein deals with key 19th Century American "issues" such as slavery, unfettered capitalism, chauvinism, and greed in the context of a graphic novel that is at once both humorous and serious, but never boring. French creator Joann Sfar, whose graphic novel The Rabbi's Cat has done quite well in U.S. bookstores in 2005, is responsible for two of FSB's spring releases. His collaboration with Emmanuel Guibert, Sardines in Outer Space ($12.95) is a delightful all ages saga that will please kids and adults alike, while Sfar's solo effort, Vampire Loves ($16.95) effortlessly blends Eastern European Jewish mysticism with Gothic subject matter and visuals in a surprising tale of a genteel vampire named Ferdinand and his strangely romantic relationships with a variety of unearthly creatures including ghosts, golems, tree- folk, and, of course, other vampires. FSB's other May release is Deogratias: A Tale of Rwanda by J.P. Stassen. This fearless and harrowing volume won the Goscinny Prize at Angouleme and it is easy to see why. It tells the story of a teenage Hutu boy, who is in love with girl from the Tutsi tribe, during the genocidal horrors of 1994, when over 800,000 people were hacked to death in fewer than 100 days. Switching back and forth in time Deogratis is unsparing in its depiction of the grip of madness and horror on one young boy and his country. +++++ [ALL THE RAGE and LYING IN THE GUTTERS are originally posted online on Sunday and Monday respectively so the information here is almost a week old. Other items above are more current.- D.L.] From Blair Marnell in his ALL THE RAGE Gossip Column at: http://www.SilverBulletComicBooks.com Write to him at: blairm@silverbulletcomicbooks.com RUMOUR BARRIER "I accept that the following material is rumour and gossip, intended to entertain only. I won't repeat the information inside as fact. I understand if I want the truth, I will go to Silver Bulletins. I enter freely with my mind open and my blinkers off." Now, on to the rumours . . . [NOTE: this column may be slightly edited for language. - D.L.] Lockdown By Blair Marnell Welcome back to another edition of ATR. It's my favorite time of the year: NFL playoff season. But first, we've got the latest news and rumors from across the comic industry. So, let's get to it... North by North Quahog Word has come in through multiple sources that Devil's Due Publishing has landed the rights to put out Family Guy comic books in 2006, possibly as soon as April. A few comic insiders have expressed shock at the news and openly questioned why DDP would pursue Family Guy in the first place, as comparable licensed comics (like The Simpsons) have failed to make much of a dent in the direct market. However, upon examination, the answer seems obvious: bookstores. Bongo's Simpsons comics are widely available in bookstores nationwide, both as trade paperbacks and actual comics. Additionally, they share shelf space in the humor section alongside collections of comic strips like The Boondocks and The Far Side. If DDP can achieve similar bookstore penetration, then odds are they'll have a hit. Keep in mind, Family Guy is still riding the surge of popularity that resurrected the show in the first place... This Has A "Victory Is Mine!" Factor of Ten Out of Ten Putting Fear Back Into The Man As we near the end of Brian Bendis and Alex Maleev's run on Daredevil, speculation is rampant about what's going to happen when Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark take over next month. For the most part, Marvel has been quiet on storyline details, though the cover to #83 may have spoiled the death of a MAJOR character. And there's more... Have you noticed that Marvel never posted the cover to Daredevil #82? There's a reason for that. I've seen the cover and it contains a one hell of SPOILER. For those of you who want to be surprised, I won't post the cover here in the column. But those of you who want to know what's coming, can click on this link. http://www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/rage/images/060108/daredevi l82cover.jpg and potential spoilers follow: As you can see from the cover to #82, it looks like Matt Murdock is going to jail, though the exact circumstances aren't clear. He could be there because the Feds finally have proof that he's Daredevil or he might be framed for the murder of his friend (as implied on the cover of 83). This Has A "Born Again" Factor of Eight Out of Ten Legion Advance In advance of its debut at Angouleme later this month, the official website of Fabien Nury and John Cassaday's I Am Legion Volume #2 is up and running. http://www.humano.com/legion/%3cb And there's a new trailer on the page as well. This Has A "Vlad To Be Back" Factor of Nine Out of Ten Spirit of 76 Over at the Engine, B. Clay Moore has provided some additional about his new project, which I mentioned here last week: Basically, another writer and I have decided to team up to produce a book featuring two separate stories, both set in the same year, but otherwise unrelated (except, I suppose, loosely by genre). The idea here is that each of us will produce one twelve- page chunk of story per issue, for a total of eight issues. By the time we've finished the initial eight-issue run, we'll each have accumulated the equivalent of a complete "normal" sized four-issue mini-series. (We'll each have 96 pages of story). The idea is not to do a flip-book, but to wrap both stories in covers that feature characters from each, even if their paths never cross in the book. And they won't. The plan right now is to have my HAWAIIAN DICK cohort Steven Griffin handle the covers. So the wrapper will be pretty, anyway. Black and white, $2.95 (or $2.99, I dunno), 24 pages of story per issue. Eight total issues, with the distinct possibility of a second "year" to follow in another eight issue series. We'll have extra pages to play with, and will try to give what we do with those pages some careful though. That book will be called '76, and won't be solicited until we're positive we can ship all eight issues on time, but I'm going to start talking about it now. My "side" of the book is called JACKIE KARMA, illustrated by Ed Tadem. The other "side" is called COOL, by writer Seth Peck and artist Tigh Walker, Canadian. This Has A "Karma Chameleon" Factor of Eight Out of Ten Same Day, Different Knight Last week's rumor about Grant Morrison writing the Midnighter ongoing series has been shot down by a well placed source. The latest rumblings have another writer attached to the project. According to some, it's... Garth Ennis?! If that's the case, I'll be kind of surprised. I thought Ennis was done with Authority related characters after the last Kev miniseries... This Has A "Wonderful Thing About Tigers" Factor of Four Out of Ten Ghost Watcher It's been about eight years since Bo Hampton's last comic project, but it looks like he has two coming out in April from Image. First up is an OGN with Robert Tinnell (The Black Forrest) entitled Sight Unseen, about a blind man who develops technology that allows him to see ghosts. Hapmton's other project is a two issue miniseries called Book of Shadows, which will be written by Mark Chadbourne, a British fantasy novelist. This Has A "White Noise" Factor of Nine Out of Ten Land of The Free In a post over at his blog, Josh Howard has revealed that Viper Comics will be participating in this year's Free Comic Book Day, with a book entitled Viper Comics Presents. The book will include stories from upcoming titles Museum of Terror, Emily Edison and A Bit Haywire along with a new Dead@17 story written and drawn by Howard. Additionally, Howard mentioned that his story leads into an ongoing Dead@17 series, which will come out this summer... This Has A "Bolabogg Unleashed" Factor of Eight Out of Ten It's A Bird, It's A Plane... Tom Perkins, an artist who works on The Batman IS working on the new animated SUPERMAN cartoon, which is said to be coming out next fall and will likely be a complete revamp ala The Batman. So when the time comes, expect something "modern and hip." Fans of the classic Paul Dini and Bruce Timm Superman Animated Series can take heart that a direct to video animated movie is still slated for this summer, though it will likely be the last appearance of that version of Superman outside of the remaining Justice League Unlimited episodes. In other comic animation news, there's word that the third season of X-Men Evolution will be collected in time for the release of X-Men 3. This Has A "Jungle Brainiac" Factor of Six Out of Ten Some Assembly Required Word out of Marvel is that there's already a follow up planned for the X-Men/Power Pack mini, this time teaming Power Pack with the Avengers. Marc Sumerak and the GuriHiru duo are all said to be back for this one. This Has An "Insert Snark Here" Factor of Seven Out of Ten And we're done for now, so I'll see you in seven. Time for me to watch some football... Later, Blair PS If anyone has any rumors, stories or news to share, please email me at blairm@silverbulletcomicbooks.com.
