Many people get a holiday - mostly people in government and education - at least around here. I have to work but my job takes me to municipal departments which will be closed that day. So, it will be an office day preparing my annual forecast. Then on Tuesday I am off to Cleveland - a winter garden spot if there ever was one. At least I get to catch up on my reading on the flights. When I think of MLK I think of the "I Have a Dream" speech. It is truly a landmark and should be repeated as it is every year on multiple media venues. Unfortunately, I also am reminded of those who use his name and cause in vain to advance their own agenda. Such things always have happened and probably always will. I also watched some of the hearings this week of the Senate Judiciary Comittee. I am ashamed of my own Senator's behavior but have come to accept that the average voter cares little about integrity and civility in their public servants - as long as they bring home the pork. I am seriously considering moving to that island on LOST. I might be able to take the struggle for survival a bit better. Better yet, I should just move to New Hampshire, at least I have a brother there. But I digress . . . I had a lot to read and review this week and am running short. Here are the comics for this week to check out. DC COMICS DC Universe The Stories Of Alan Moore, $19.99 Fables #45, $2.75 JLA #124, $2.50 JLA Classified Cold Steel #2 (Of 2), $5.99 MARVEL COMICS Exiles #75, $2.99 Ultimate Extinction #1 (Of 5), $2.99 <-----Pick of the Week! Hey Dave, I hope you had a good end of the year. I'm still without a computer, checking e-mail every week or so, when I can get my hands on a computer... hopefully, mine will be up and running by the end of next week, but it's out of my hands, really. This week, as I am at my parent's beach house, I can check mail daily, but I don't know if I can get enough computer time as to write a column, since my dad needs the computer to work. If I can, I'll send out a column by thurdsay, at least to let readers know I'm not dead or something. If I don't, please include this messages in the letters section, to let them know that I haven't just deserted. MaGnUs [Martin Perez - The Nitpicker] +++++ From: "Ken Gale" <nuffsaid@riseup.net> Subject: Julie Schwartz's last interview soon Date: Wed, 11 Jan 2006 23:10:35 -0500 Hi, folks, Please Post and Forward to appropriate chat rooms, web pages and e-lists! 1. Next show: Tuesday night (Wednesday morning) Jan. 17 (18). Moore, Henry Kuttner and Mort Weisinger. I'll play it at 4:30 AM so I can take your phone calls about Julie in the last half hour of the show. 2. A free sample of the 'Nuff Said! dvd (the face for radio is on video!) is posted on the web site in several formats so you can see it whether you have dial-up, a mac or a pc. Box 1028, Gracie Station, NYC 10028 +++++ Subject: Letter to the Editor Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 15:59:50 -0800 From: "Roberts, Paul Dale" <PRoberts@ss.ca.gov> To: ComicBkNet@aol.com In the world of comic books, many incredible crossovers have come about that have placed comic book aficionados into a frenzy. Most people made fun of the X-Men/Star Trek comic book crossover, but I sat there riveted to my seat reading this story. For people who love crossover stories or some great fan fiction, you can now find it all over cyberspace. By going into Google search and merely typing in "crossover stories" or "fan fiction", you can find crossover stories such as Gunsmoke/Star Trek; The Big Valley/Quantum Leap; Hawaii 5-0/X-Files; Dr. Who/Star Trek; SG- 1/Dr. Who; Planet of the Apes/Battlestar Galactica. Along with these crossover stories, there is a variety of fan fiction that includes ongoing stories of the Lord of the Rings, even some Hobbit crossover stories. Besides all of the TV/Movie crossover stories, fans of various comic book characters have crossed over their favorite comic book characters. Of course, they are unauthorized stories, but they are sure fun to read! I am also so amazed at how many regular websites are using comic book animation or just regular animation, for example check out my cousin Bobby's website, he is a former CHP (California Highway Patrol) and now is the Director of his own Private Investigation Firm. His website is: www.arcyinvestigations.com As you can see placing animation on your website brings your website alive and more and more people are doing this. The world of animation, crossover stories, fan fiction is getting more and more popular due to the Super Information Highway known as the Internet! Life just got more exciting! His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] HE DID WHAT FEMA COULDN'T- CLEAN UP NEW ORLEANS This next entry is full of mystery and unanswered questions. The SHADOW pulp closed down in 1949, the radio show in 1951. Yet in 1958 Republic Pictures produced a television pilot (actually the second one filmed) of the character, and then turned it into a feature film. The adventure is known as BOURBON STREET SHADOWS and INVISIBLE AVENGER and features Richard Derr as Lamont Cranston, who becomes invisible to fight crime as the Shadow. He wears no costume or mask in the film (just a business suit), and battles gangsters and would be despots in New Orleans. Oddly enough, this may have been the inspiration or model for the short lived ARCHIE ADVENTURE SERIES comic version of the Shadow in the 1960's. In the first two issues, Cranston is blonde with wavy hair (as was Derr in the film) but the only costume he wore was a blue cape to go along with his blue suit. The first issue cover showed the traditional hook-nosed slouch hat version of the Shadow. In the second issue, a different version of the hero appeared on the cover with blue hair and tights. In the 3rd issue interior, Cranston was now the fellow depicted on the cover of issue 2 and began battling supervillains. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [4] Network Buzz News, gossip and rumors from the industry Marvel Terminates Toy Biz Worldwide Licensing Agreement and Plans for Transition to Hasbro License in 2007 NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)----Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE:MVL), announced today that is has terminated its licensing agreement with Toy Biz Worldwide Ltd., effective as of December 31, 2005, one year earlier than the license's scheduled termination date. As a result of the termination, in 2006 Marvel- branded action figures and other toys formerly produced by Toy Biz Worldwide will be produced by Marvel. Now, with full control over Marvel-branded toys produced for sale in 2006, Marvel will be in a better position to effect a smooth transition to Hasbro in areas such as toy development, manufacturing, shipping, and retail space. As a result of this early termination, Marvel will record a one-time cash charge of $13 million - $16 million in the fourth quarter of 2005 related to the early termination and reimbursed research and development expenses. The charge is not reflected in Marvel's financial guidance for 2005, last provided on November 9, 2005. Marvel's Chairman, Morton Handel, commented, "While Marvel will own any inventory produced for 2006, our policy of predominantly manufacturing to order should help mitigate our inventory risk. Commencing in 2007, a wide range of toy and game categories - including action figures, role play and preschool toys, board games and puzzles - will be produced by our new licensee, Hasbro. We are very excited by the business prospects we see in teaming with an industry leader." Hasbro and Marvel Team to Produce Wide Range of Toys and Games Based on the Marvel Character Universe PAWTUCKET, R.I. & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)---- Hasbro Awarded Five-Year Strategic License to Marvel's Library of Over 5,000 Characters; Product Inspired by Spider-Man 3 Movie to be Among the First to Market Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE:HAS) and Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE:MVL), announced today a license under which Marvel has granted Hasbro toy and game rights to its renowned Super Hero universe that includes franchises such as Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men and Captain America. Through the agreement, Hasbro has obtained the rights to develop products based on Marvel's globally-known universe of over 5,000 characters in a wide range of toy and game categories -- including action figures, role play and preschool toys, board games and puzzles. The agreement covers both the "classic" comic book look of the characters as well as product lines inspired by Marvel-themed movies. The five-year license gives Hasbro the rights to bring Marvel Entertainment-based toy products to retail beginning January 1, 2007. Hasbro's first full line of products based on Marvel properties is expected to center on Ghost Rider and the highly- anticipated movie event, Spider-Man 3, scheduled for release on May 4, 2007. Marvel has also agreed to provide services to Hasbro in connection with the licensed toys. The license guarantees Marvel $205 million in royalty and service fee payments, of which $70 million would be payable on the theatrical release of Spider- Man 3 and $35 million upon the theatrical release of Spider-Man 4. In addition, the license can be extended past the five year term, dependent on the number of other entertainment properties released during that timeframe. "We are particularly pleased with this arrangement as it fits strategically into our plan to continually develop our home-grown core brands while aligning ourselves selectively with the best licenses in the business," Alfred J. Verrecchia, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hasbro, Inc. said. "Hasbro's multi-year agreement with Marvel provides Hasbro with proven properties in categories where we have been long-time industry leaders," said Brian Goldner, Hasbro's President, U.S. Toy Segment. "Marvel's properties are a 'who's-who' in children's and family entertainment and provide Hasbro with many exciting opportunities in the years ahead." Tim Rothwell, Worldwide President, Consumer Media Group, Marvel Entertainment, added, "Hasbro is renowned in the toy arena. It supports its key brands with heavy promotional and advertising campaigns and their innovation provides consumers with an unmatched retail experience. We believe aligning with Hasbro as our master toy and game partner sets the stage for us to further extend the global and domestic reach and image of the overall Marvel brand." Bruno Maglione, President, Marvel International, commented, "As we continue the process of developing our brands through a heightened mix of coordinated multi-media and product activity it was important to engage with a partner who understands how to leverage and optimize that sort of evergreen franchise approach. Hasbro brings that experience to the table, and with it, the ability and reach to execute globally. It's a perfect match." David Hargreaves, Chief Financial Officer of Hasbro, Inc, said, "We are very pleased with this deal as it provides Hasbro with incremental revenues in high margin categories and allows us to maintain an appropriate balance in our portfolio of core brands and strategic licenses." Juli Boylan, Sr. Vice President, Sony Pictures Consumer Products, the limited partner in Spider-Man Merchandising LP, stated, "We are thrilled to have Hasbro develop toys and games for Spider-Man 3. We are very proud of the Spider-Man film franchise and feel Hasbro will play a pivotal role in its continued success." The license is conditioned on its clearance under the Hart- Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976. +++++ At MoCCA 1/14 - 2/20: The Art of Irwin Hasen, Heroes to War Orphan NEW YORK (January 8, 2006) -- This Saturday, the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) is proud to open its retrospective "The Art of Irwin Hasen: Heroes to War Orphan." Irwin Hasen began drawing comic books in 1939; working on characters such as the Flash, Green Lantern, and Wildcat (a character he co-created with writer Bill Finger). Later, Hasen developed the newspaper strip Dondi, the story of a WWII orphan coming to America, which ran from 1955 to 1986. The show includes original comic book and strip art, recreations of his most striking cover work, artifacts from the 1961 Dondi film, and a look at his latest comics projects, along with clips from an upcoming documentary on Hasen, produced by Batman artist Neal Adams. The opening reception for "The Art of Irwin Hasen: Heroes to War Orphan" will be held January 14th at 7pm at the museum. Hasen himself will be there. The museum is located on the fourth floor of 594 Broadway (between Houston and Prince Streets). Normal admission to the museum is $3, but admission to this reception is free. If you can't make it to the opening reception on Saturday the 14th, Hasen will also be the featured guest at the museum's MoCCA Monday event on January 16th. Hasen will discuss his over-50- year career in comics. Program starts at 6:30pm. MoCCA Monday is a weekly program bringing special guests to the museum every Monday night for lectures, panels, screenings and other fun educational events. MoCCA Monday events are free and open to the public. The MoCCA Monday program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. "The Art of Irwin Hasen: Heroes to War Orphan" will be on display at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art from January 14 through February 20, during regular gallery hours (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, noon-5pm). Museum admission during regular gallery hours is $3 (free for MoCCA Members as well as children 12 and under). The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts education organization dedicated to the preservation, study and display of all forms of comic and cartoon art. The museum promotes greater understanding and appreciation of the artistic, cultural and historical significance of comic and cartoon art through a variety of events, exhibitions, and educational programs. The museum is currently located at 594 Broadway (between Houston and Prince Streets) in New York City. MoCCA exhibits are generally open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 12:00-5:00 pm. General admission to the museum is $3 but free for MoCCA Members as well as children 12 and under. For more information about the museum or specific MoCCA events, exhibitions and programs, visit the museum's Website (www.moccany.org). +++++ Award-Winning Animated Short Set to Appear at the Southern Fried Flicks Film Fest and Compete at the MoTV Awards at Mandalay Bay Hotel January 9, 2006, Palm Beach, FL - The New Year starts off with a bang for the award-winning animated short, Zoom Suit, as it is scheduled to appear in the Southern Fried Flicks Film Festival on January 10 at the Imperial Theater in Augusta, Georgia airing at 6:00 pm and will then compete in the 2006 MoTV Awards held during the National Association of Television Production Executives (NATPE) meeting on January 23 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas. The second annual Southern Fried Flicks Film Fest showcases Southern independent films with a special emphasis on local and regional films. Southern Fried Flicks was developed to inspire, encourage and support films and filmmaking in the South. With the worldwide demand for mobile content exploding and nearly 2 billion mobile phone users actually watching television on their cell phones, the first annual MoTV Awards is searching for the next big mobile hit show through the work of independent creators. Held at NATPE, the leading event for educating and making deals with global television producers and marketers at their annual summit, the audience for the awards will be comprised of top tier press, television, and mobile/wireless execs, and content creators, acquirers and carriers/distributors. "We love the attention, but we're afraid the comic book may be allocated" said Zoom Suit creator John Taddeo. "We wanted preview copies for retailers, so we printed the book based upon a best guess in late November. With the increased exposure, it appears that estimate was woefully low. If you want a copy of Zoom Suit, please reserve one at your local comic shop as soon as possible." The award-winning animated short Zoom Suit, created by John Taddeo, can be seen online at www.superverse.com. The Zoom Suit comic book will be solicited under Superverse in the February edition of Previews for items shipping in April 2006. +++++ Thanks for subscribing to the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine (CBEM) --------------------------->Disclaimer<--------------------------- This is an ANNOUNCE only mailing list, only the Editor can send messages to the list.
