+++++ From Jim McCann at Marvel Comics http://www.marvel.com Marvel Knights Finds a New Mission! Eight years after its inception, Marvel Knights is re-inventing itself while seeing a return to its roots! Originally meant to shine a light on Marvel's darker corners and forgotten characters, Knights lead the first wave of Marvel's renaissance. Now, as Marvel and the rest of the comic book industry continues to see business grow, Marvel Knights has redefined its mission, and plans to unveil upcoming series that will set the industry ablaze once again! The proud "father" of Marvel Knights, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada, is thrilled with the continued success and future of the imprint he helped shape. "Marvel Knights is the showcase for 'evergreen events' -- self-contained limited series that think outside the box, that challenge readers to re-think their favorite Marvel characters and re-evaluate the legends that surround them. In other words, Marvel Knights will be a place for top talent to work without constraints, and deliver the kind of product fans deserve!" Executive Editor and Marvel Knights' "god-father" Axel Alonso sheds light on this new development. "These stand alone stories won't just challenge readers to re-think their favorite Marvel legends. Oftentimes, we'll focus on characters that are off the beaten path-boiling these archetypes down to their cores. We want to build on the tradition of limited series like Ennis and Crain's GHOST RIDER, Frank Cho's SHANNA, THE SHE-DEVIL and Rodi and Ribic's LOKI -- each of which offered very distinct visions for Marvel characters, and each of which -- judging by sales numbers -- were embraced by fandom." The mini-series that will define Marvel Knights for the future include the upcoming FURY: PEACEMAKER (Issue #1 - DEC051990) by Garth Ennis & Darick Robertson, the previously announced SILVER SURFER: REQUEIM by J. Michael Straczynski & Esad Ribic (set for early 2007), and the follow-up to the red-hot GHOST RIDER mini-series SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE by Garth Ennis & Clayton Crain. Also slated for Knight-hood is a chilling tale of Peter Parker's future entitled THE SPIDER by Kaare Andrews. Look for these and more throughout 2006 and into 2007! As for the on-going series that currently call Knights their home, they are moving under the Marvel Universe banner. It is important to note that this does not affect these books ratings, creative teams, or story content. The books affected will change with the issues indicated below: BLACK PANTHER #14 (JAN062011), the first issue of the "Bride of the Panther" arc, which will see the union of Black Panther and the X-Men's Storm. DAREDEVIL #82 (DEC051984), which finds Daredevil's fate at the mercy of some of his most feared villains, and masterfully crafted by Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark! MOON KNIGHT #1, a new on-going which re-establishes the wildly popular, and unpredictable, character back in the Marvel Universe by crime-fiction author Charlie Huston and David (New Avengers) Finch SQUADRON SUPREME #1 (JAN062014), will relaunch in March as the team is formed and stands as their Universe's last line of defense-if they don't kill each other or their own world first! The ongoing WOLVERINE series will also change as of issue #42, when Logan welcomes aboard a new creative team and enters the brewing CIVIL WAR Two books will also see a name change due to their move to the Marvel Universe. MARVEL KNIGHTS FOUR will become FOUR with issue 28 (JAN0620090). MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN becomes SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN with issue 23 (DEC051976), as Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Angel Medina take the helm of that title 2006 is the year to watch for the Marvel Universe, and Marvel Knights is no exception. Look for more ground- breaking, buzz-worthy series as the year progresses! The HORESMEN Ride Again - and Get a New Look Courtesy of a re- vamped Salvador Larocca!! Mutantkind has been Decimated to the verge of extinction and finds itself in need of a savior. Beginning in X- Men #182, the world must brace themselves for the return of APOCALYPSE! And to help readers brace themselves, Marvel is pleased to offer, at no extra charge, 5 additional pages of backup stories featuring the Horsemen. Fans know that wherever Apocalypse goes, his Horsemen are sure to follow! Historically, his Horsemen have been mutants willing to make a deal with the devil, and this time his chosen Horsemen will cut the X-Men deeper than ever before! This time, the X-Men will find those they once called friends and teammates on Apocalypse's side. Sunfire has already been revealed as a new Horsemen, but for a MAJOR hint as to who will be the Horseman Death, check out this unseen cover to X-Men #185. And Apocalypse isn't the only one who's changed. Superstar X-artist Salvador Larocca has adopted a jaw-dropping new style, just in time for a revamped Apocalypse and four brand- new Horsemen. "Salva-already an amazing artist-has succeeded in taking his art style to the next level," says editor Mike Marts. "His change in style adds new layers of excitement and energy to the pages. Readers are going to love this." X-Men #182 kicks off the five-part "Blood of Apocalypse" storyline where each issue will feature a bonus five page back-up story, at no extra cost, explaining why each of Apocalypse's Horsemen made their deal with the devil. Be sure to pick up X-Men #182 for the beginning of a huge turning point in X-Men history where destruction and betrayal ensure that only the fittest will survive. The title will become Sensational Spider-Man just in time for the addition of the new creative team of Roberto Aguirre- Sacasa and Angel Medina. Aguirre-Sacasa and Medina plan to show just how sensational Spidey can be in their first arc "Feral," which finds Spider-Man's animalistic foes, including the Lizard, Man-Wolf, and the Black Cat becoming more bestial than ever before. "It's thrilling to be writing Spider-Man when so many exciting things are happening to him and the entire Marvel Universe," says writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. "It is both challenging and exciting to be aligning Sensational Spider-Man back with the other Spider-Man titles as well as the Marvel Universe. It also helps that Angel Medina's art is nothing short of sensational." Matt Yocum of ComicCritique.com says," Renowned playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has nailed the tone of what a Marvel book should be." More of the same can be expected when he takes over everybody's favorite wall-crawler. Spider-Man is going to have to be more than just amazing and spectacular to quell the strange transformations that are undergoing his deadly, long-time foes. He's going to have to be sensational. Voting is open to those involved in the creative end of the comics industry. The Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con are proud to present the official Nomination Ballot for this year's Harvey Awards. Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, one of the industry's most innovative talents, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art. Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators - those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. They are the only industry awards both nominated by and selected by the full body of comic book professionals. Professionals who participate will be joining nearly 2,000 other comics' professionals in honoring the outstanding comics' achievements of 2005. Your participation in completing this Nominating Ballot will allow the Harvey Awards Committee to place before you a Final Ballot in late March - one which reflects your candidates for the most outstanding comics work of 2005. The Harvey Awards have moved to the Baltimore Comic-Con, held each year at the Baltimore Convention Center in September. We're thrilled to add this commemoration of the comic book arts to what is already one of the most successful comic-centric shows on the annual convention calendar. We hope that the Harvey Awards will call Baltimore home for many years to come. The dates for this year's Baltimore Comic-Con are September 9-10, with the convention itself open Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 5 PM. The ceremony and banquet for the 2006 Harvey Awards will be held Saturday night, September 9, with time and location to be announced. We look forward to your participation and input in this process, and we look forward to seeing you at the Baltimore Comic-Con and the Harvey Awards. Additional details about the Harvey Awards and the awards ceremony will be released over the next few months. Nat Gertler is at it again. The About Comics mastermind behind 24 Hour Comic Day has a new nationwide comics events comin' at ya, COMICS JAM WAR on April 1. The organizers of Comics Jam War have announced their initial list of comics shops hosting this comics creation contest. With the April 1st contest date still month away, the contest already has a dozen shops signed up in seven U.S. states and one Canadian province, with more locations in the midst of signing up. The contest is simple. Teams of creative folks will gather at events hosted by comics shops. At noon Eastern time, some specific information will be announced that all the teams have to build eight page black-and-white all-ages comic book stories around. At midnight, all the artists will have to put their drawing implements down. The work will then be sent to a panel of comics professionals for judging. Cash prizes and publication await the creators of the best, most publishable stories. Stores that have arranged to host events include * Austin Books in Austin, Texas * Bunjee's Comics in McDonough, Georgia * Buy Me Toys.com in South Bend, Indiana * Captain Blue Hen in Newark, Delaware * Comic-Kazi in Calgary, Alberta * Comickaze Comics Books and More in San Diego, California * Happy Harbor Comics and Toys in Edmonton, Alberta * Kingdom Comics in Vestavia Hills, Alabama * Knightly Games in El Centro, California * Metropolis Comics in Bellflower, California * Modern Myths in Northampton. Massachusetts * That's Entertainment in Worcester; Massachusetts Writers and artists who live near these stores should contact them to sign up for the event. The addresses of these shops can be found on the ComicsJamWar.com website. Folks who don't have an announced location near them shouldn't feel shut out, however. "There are still more than two months before the contest," explains Nat Gertler, publisher of About Comics and founder of Comics Jam War, "and we're going to keep signing up stores. If our experience with 24 Hour Comics Day is any indication, the number of stores will double by the contest date. The best thing to do is to talk to your local comics shop, tell them you're interested, and steer them toward the ComicsJamWar.com for more information on what it takes to host an event." Meanwhile, Gertler is not resting. "I'm sending out promotional posters to the hosts, getting ready to print up t-shirts for the events, talking to additional stores about joining in on the fun, and generally trying to make this event special for all involved. All that and I have to keep convincing folks that just because it's happening on April 1, that doesn't mean it's an April Fool's joke." Comics Jam War is a creation of About Comics, a publisher of comics books and other materials for the comics fans. More information about Comics Jam War is available at ComicsJamWar.com. Family Guy: Volume 1 will kick off a bimonthly series. Matt Fleckenstein, staff writer of the animated series, is the book's writer, with art by Benjamin Phillips. Here's how Devil's Due describes the book: "The Family Guy steps out of the TV screen and into a new bimonthly series from Devil's Due! Each of the three volumes in this series focuses on one of the star characters, and their views on life... however skewed they may be! Want advice from Peter or Stewie? Probably not, but they're going to give it to you anyway! In between these hilarious one-on-one segments are stories rivaled only by the TV show itself." +++++ From ComiX-Fan at http://www.comixfan.com/xfan SPIDER-GIRL CANCELLED AFTER 100 ISSUES The future of Marvel Comics' long-running Spider-Girl series has been settled once and for all with the publisher confirming to Newsarama that the title will be ending with issue #100 in August. Earlier this week, the title was once again under a cloud of doubt in the lead-up to its landmark 100th issue, with word from series artist - and Spider-Girl co-creator - Ron Frenz that the series had yet to be renewed past #100. "Her future after issue #100 is now being considered by the 'Powers that be'," Frenz posted on the Spider-Girl Message Board. "Naturally, when we know anything definite you guys will probably know it first." The end of the Spider-Girl series also sees an end to the monthly chronicling of the MC2 universe, which featured other future Marvel characters such as A-Next, a future Avengers team which had its own series that debuted at the same time as Spider-Girl and lasted 12 issues; J2, the son of the Juggernaut, who also had a 12 issue series; the Fantastic Five, who starred in their own 5 issue series; Wild Thing, daughter of Wolverine and Elektra who had a 6 issue series; and the Buzz and Darkdevil, who both starred in 3 issue mini-series' spin-offs from Spider-Girl. Despite its cancellation, Spider-Girl will still retain the title as Marvel's longest-running monthly series featuring a lead female character. BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD CAST AS GWEN STACY IN SPIDER-MAN 3 The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Bryce Dallas Howard is in negotiations to play Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3, which is scheduled to begin filming later this month. According to the trade paper, Columbia is keeping a tight lid on the third movie's story line, though it is known that Gwen is the third part of a love triangle and that the character does survive. Gwen Stacy is best known to comic fans as Peter Parker's high school crush, his first girlfriend and his first love. In Amazing Spider-Man #121 she was kidnapped by the Green Goblin and thrown off a bridge to her death. That storyline was used in the original Spider-Man film, placing Mary Jane Watson in the situation, which she survived. Howard, the daughter of filmmaker Ron Howard, starred in M. Night Shymalan's The Village in 2004. This year, she will star in Shymalan's Lady in the Water and Kenneth Branagh's As You Like It. Spider-Man 3 is scheduled to be released on May 4, 2007. +++++ From the DC Comics Online Newsletter at http://www.dccomics.com ARTIST DAN JURGENS SIGNS EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT WITH DC COMICS Dan Jurgens, whose thrilling artwork has graced DCU projects including the classic "Death of Superman" storyline and the upcoming miniseries INFINITE CRISIS AFTERMATH: THE BATTLE FOR BLUDHAVEN, has signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics. "Everyone in comics admires the sense of enthusiasm and creative hustle that DC exudes these days," says Jurgens. "When (Senior VP - Executive Editor, DCU) Dan DiDio and (Group Editor) Eddie Berganza approached me with the idea of joining DC exclusively, with Dan saying he wanted a 'gunslinger,' I couldn't help but be intrigued. Working in a high-octane environment like the one at DC gets the creative fires burning and that adds up to books reflecting that energy and excitement. We have some very exciting projects planned for the next few years and I can't wait to get started. I spent a fair amount of time contributing to the DCU's past. It's great to be back amid friends with a chance to contribute to its future." "Dan was such an important part of DC's successes in the 1990s," says DiDio. "We're extremely happy to have him back with us, where he'll bring that same talent and enthusiasm to his new projects and the new direction of the DC Universe." Since backlist sales have also been strong this year, that percentage may understate the actual growth. December graphic novel sales were up 29%; fourth quarter graphic novel sales, driven by a rockin' November, were up 44%. As was the case throughout the year, December comic sales were up by a much smaller percentage, a modest 6%. Fourth quarter comic sales were up 5%. And comic periodical sales were up only 4% for the year, which may be less than the average price increase. The combined total of comic and graphic novels sales in comic stores was up a respectable 8% for the year, better than the 5% increase in 2004 (see "Q4 Down, 2004 Up"). 2005 also differed from 2004 in that the 2004 increase was the same for periodicals and graphic novels, vs. the heavy weighting toward graphic novel increases in 2005. Coordinated Launch for 'Eureka Seven' Bandai to Release Manga, Soundtrack & DVD in April January 18, 2006 Bandai Entertainment has announced a coordinated launch for its Eureka Seven property, which debuts on April 25th with the release of Volume #1 of the Eureka Seven DVD, the original soundtrack CD for the series, and the first volume of the Eureka Seven manga by Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondou. Bandai will eventually publish six volumes of Eureka Seven manga -- four volumes that adapt the Eureka Seven anime series, and a two- volume adaptation of the Eureka Seven videogame prequel story. This will mark the first manga release for Bandai Entertainment, whose entrance into the American book market has been expected for some time. Eureka Seven, with its hoverboarding mecha, non-stop adventure and touching romance, is one of the most anticipated anime releases of 2006 and a glance at the 50-episode series' creative team explains why. Studio Bones (Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist) produced the series, which was written by Dai Sato, story supervisor for the Cowboy Bebop TV series. It's directed by Tomoki Kyoda, director of Rahxephon the Movie. Famed designer Shoji Kawamori (Macross, Escaflowne) created the mecha for Eureka Seven, while Kenichi Yoshida (Princess Mononoke) produced the character designs. One detail in the launch plan has not yet been announced; there is a plan to broadcast the series on an undisclosed premier TV network in the U.S. But Bandai has announced that it will provide a free Internet streaming of the first episode in the series simultaneously with the TV broadcast. 'Comics Creators on X-Men' A Raft of Marvel X-Titles Out in Time for 'X-3' January 18, 2006 Titan Books has announced the May release of Comics Creators on X-Men an in-depth history of the mutant superhero team written by former Marvel EIC Tom DeFalco, who has conducted interviews with a host of key X-Men creators including Stan Lee, Chris Claremont, John Byrne, Alan Davis Grant Morrison and Mark Millar. The Titan volume will include exclusive sketches, script pages, a cover gallery, and essential background information on the myriad X-Men characters (both heroes and villains) and the group's labyrinthine history -- and it should appear in time for retailers to take advantage of the opening of the third X-Men movie, now known simply as X-3, which will debut over the Memorial Day weekend. Marvel has also announced its April releases, which include a tsunami of X-Men books, most of which should receive some additional interest (especially in bookstores) thanks to the release of X-3. Joss (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Serenity) Whedon's stint on the Astonishing X-Men has been a big hit in the direct market and the Astonishing X-Men Vol. 1 hardcover ($29.99) should do very well. Marvel is also reprinting the gift-worthy hardcover Marvel Masterworks: X-Men Vol. 6 ($49.99), while the mammoth Uncanny X-Men Omnibus ($99.99) collects some of Chris Claremont's best X-Men work (Uncanny X-Men #94 through #131, plus the Annual #3 and Giant Size X-Men #1). A number of other classic Claremont volumes will be available again including X- Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga, ($24.99), The Essential X-Men Vol. 4 ($16.99) and Vol. 7 ($16.99) as well as The New Mutants Classic Vol. 1 ($24.99). New X-Men collections out in April include Decimation: X-Men -- The Day After ($15.99), X-Men: The Complete Age of the Apocalypse Epic Vol. 3 ($29.99), and the origin saga of the comely new mutant character X-23, which is revealed in X- 23: Innocence Lost ($15.99) +++++ Thanks for subscribing to the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine (CBEM) --------------------------->Disclaimer<--------------------------- This is an ANNOUNCE only mailing list, only the Editor can send messages to the list.
