His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] YOU LOOK FAMILIAR STRANGER. MAYBE IT'S THE COONSKIN CAP! In the 1950's probably the greatest television hit of the decade was DAVY CROCKETT on DISNEYLAND. The 3 episodes (and their two sequels the next year) starred Fess Parker as Crockett and Buddy Ebsen as his sidekick Georgie Russel. In the 1960's the two actors met again on television, now playing different frontier characters from each's starring series. The occasion was THE DANNY KAYE SHOW, in which Parker played DANIEL BOONE while Ebsen played JED CLAMPETT. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [15] HYPE! & LINKS Section Various THIS WEEK'S LINKS These are the website URLS to the regular items that are usually here every week or two: World Wide Web Home Page http://members.aol.com/ComicBkNet Yahoo Group CBEM http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ComicBookNetworkEmag Trivia sponsors: Discount Comic Book Service http://www.dcbservice.com That's Entertainment http://www.thatse.com News: Diamond Comics http://www.diamondcomics.com Marvel http://www.Marvel.com DC Comics http://www.dccomics.com The PULSE http://www.comicon.com/pulse/ Comics Continuum http://www.comicscontinuum.com/ Newsarama http://www.Newsarama.com/ X-Fan http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/ The Comic Wire http://www.comicbookresources.com/ ICV2 http://www.ICV2.com The SCOOP! http://scoop.diamondgalleries.com/ Alternative Comics http://www.indyworld.com/altcomics All The Rage http://www.SilverBulletComicBooks.com Lying in the Gutters http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/ Columns: New Comics Releases http://www.comiclist.com X-Fan Reviews http://www.comixfan.com/xfan Paul Dale Roberts http://www.jazmaonline.com/ Richard Vasseur http://www.jazmaonline.com/ Michael Vance http://www.starland.com/sus Mark Allen Jonathan A. Writer/Ad Coordinator Vince Brusio is the designated editorial writer for Previews' "The Splash Page" which is our source material Dark Horse Celebrates 20 Years in Previews Mike Richardson has a lot to smile about this year. Fans will be surprised to learn that it's been 20 years since his independent publishing business graced the pages of the Previews catalog. What was once a medium that was dominated by superhero fare became a bigger salad bowl of four-color entertainment after Mike Richardson and company joined us at the dinner table. They brought with them goodies we had never tasted. The new formula for comics entertainment revolved around one magic ingredient - quality entertainment. Comic fare that Richardson wanted to introduce was entertainment that transcended the superhero genre, and instead focused on stories that would appeal to a wider audience that would include women and fans of mature entertainment. Reaching those demographics was a key strategy for Dark Horse Comics, and it worked to the advantage of the fledgling publisher with Paul Chadwick's Concrete taking the spotlight. If you want a concrete example of how Dark Horse successfully stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Marvel and DC, then you should look to the comic title that helped them capture their key demographic. Concrete was a comic that appealed to readers who wanted something other than big bruisers in spandex. It was fresh. Heavy. And the book was so good that it went on to earn 26 awards and nominations within two years of hitting the racks. From that point on, Dark Horse would show that its high standards for publishing was something that readers had wanted, and would reward with their patronage. Talent that would eventually arrive at the Horse would include well- known names such as Frank Miller, Mike Mignola, Stan Sakai, and Sergio Aragon,s. And high profile licenses that would make an appearance in comics and trade paperbacks would include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Wars, Aliens, and Predator, to name a few. The pride in the publishing is truly owed to the vision of Mike Richardson. Making the jump from comics retailer in the 1980s, to independent publisher in the 1990s, Richardson went on to stretch his wings as a researcher as well, for his love of a medium that had given him a livelihood. After 10 years worth of homework, he and co-author Steve Duin have documented the industry's achievements and personalities to inform the reading public just how much comics have to offer pop culture, and popular entertainment. The work is documented in Comics Between the Panels, and it serves as a homage to the comic books of yesteryear. But the focus on comics today is just as important as those produced in the past. And for that reason, Previews salutes the 20-year veteran Dark Horse Comics for continually publishing stories that are told with pictures. Here's to you, Dark Horse! The Show Must Go On When extraordinary things happen to ordinary surroundings, we tend to view such juxtaposition as "fantastic," or "surrealistic." Clive Barker's The Great and Secret Show from IDW Publishing fits such descriptions, because the 12-part adaptation of Barker's novel puts one on a path to melted time pieces familiar to the legions of Dali. The Great and Secret Show is hard to describe using conventional language, and this is what lends it readily to the comics medium. Words and pictures are so much more effective in relaying a story that can be handcuffed with one medium. A music soundtrack would further help us appreciate the nature of Quiddity, but who's to say that your choice in music would work well with the imagination of your neighbor? Everyone sees something different in The Great and Secret Show. Choose audio on your own time, then let Clive Barker get on with the story of Quiddity. The dreamscape paradise known as Quiddity one can only be visited three times in a life span. Sound interesting? Not as interesting as the race which seeks to find the secret of 'The Art' - a state of being or consciousness which allows its owner to transcend humanity and enter into heightened spirituality. But the whole rollercoaster ride starts with a Nebraska postal clerk named Randolph Jaffe working in the Dead Letter Room, opening and inspecting loads of undeliverable U.S. mail. Once he taps into an ethereal network of enormous power channels, the seeds of mortal men will forever be corrupted! Look for Clive Barker's The Great and Secret Show from IDW Publishing in the Comics section of Previews. Marvel Pulls Out The Carpet If you think that the "House of M" was a kick in the pants, wait until you see what happens with New Avengers: The Illuminati. Illuminati appears to be the killing blow to all the nay-sayers who thought the House of Ideas had finished tapping its well of talent. True, we were put on the ropes with the "Disassembled" storyline. Then "House of M" kept our faces on the mat while the ref called out "7...8...9...10...you're out!" Now The Iluminati is being heralded as the goliath that holds his mighty mitts over his head, while the crowd in the arena screams his name, and prays for a final and illegal kick to the ribs of the battered opponent that lies broken and beaten. The Eisner award-winning team of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev drive the train on this project. And they're keeping details close to home. They're not getting a lot of flak about it, either, because they're the guys behind New Avengers , Daredevil, and the upcoming Spider-Woman ongoing series. So the details you're getting on the New Avengers: The Illuminati will be akin to a movie trailer - one that tells you just enough to make you surf the Internet for new glimpses about the oncoming blockbuster that promises to knock you senseless. Let us tantalize you, then, with the details that we were able to steal out of Pandora's box while Bendis and Maleev turned their backs to get a cup of coffee. The storyline centers on a secret past that was supposed to stay hidden from even the most trained electric eyes in the sky. Yet, as history will show us, most secrets are revealed in time. And when exposed, combined with events that have been unfolding in public view, these secrets point to new collaborations we never would have contemplated. In the case of The Illuminati, imagine a new world order! Expect such revelations in the New Avengers: The Illuminati. Witness Marvel's secret team ripped apart too soon after revealing their existence! But the beautiful part of this birthday cake is not the creamy frosting, nor the dual-layered cake itself. It's the cake topper. Iluminati is the launching pad for two upcoming summer events in 2006. What better toy could you want in time for the holidays? Look for the New Avengers: The Illuminati between the pages of Marvel Previews! The Good Guys Meet The Big Guys It's round three for the members of the Joe team, and the rustbuckets that don't let their heavy metal advantage obscure their sense of compassion. The Joes are fully-loaded, and the Autobots have finished their 3,000 mile oil change for the G.I. Joe Vs. Transformers Volume 3: The Art of War #1 from Devil's Due Publishing. Amicable allies in the past, both teams have shown that they can work together when there's a common goal shared between them. The human spirit and Cybertronian technology, when joined, have proven that great bridges can be built, and knowledge can be disseminated. But room for continued good will may be getting a bit cramped in The Art of War, as tense situations may lead to shorter tempers. Writer Tim Seeley and artists Joe Ng and UDON put Snake-Eyes, Optimus Prime, Scarlett, Arcee, and others in the path of a horrifying new life form that murders everything in its path, and doesn't think twice about it. It's safe to say that diplomacy is useless in this series. It will only get more people killed, because you can't get your guns up fast enough if you're too busy talking to the enemy! Talk is the last option on the menu when you're flung from Earth to the Deception slums of Cybertron! In this interstellar epic featuring the classic Joe and Transformer characters, the stakes are too high for a middle-of-the-road approach. It's all-out war! Look for G.I. Joe Vs. Transformers Volume 3: The Art of War #1 in the Comics section of Previews! Active Duty for Cyberforce Top Cow Productions was founded in 1992 by Marc Silvestri. It was the beginning of greater things to come for comics in the 90s. It was the storm stirring over the ocean, bringing an age of big guns, big bodies, and big splash pages of maximum overkill for heroes that were too gargantuan for the four panels allotted per page. On a surfboard that rode this extreme wave was the team book Cyberforce. The book posted sales of 850,000 copies at one point, and this certified how much the comic audience embraced the big, brash breed of heroes-and their attitudes. In 1992, comic fans were suggesting Cyberforce could be the comic of the year. Many comparisons were being made to the book Youngblood. The Cyberforce book, fans argued, also boasted art that was light years ahead of itself. And around the comic shop, it wasn't uncommon to hear someone brag how Cyberforce was "what the X-Men used to be." But of course, one of the faithful would hear such a comment from across the store, and a battle of back issue knowledge would ensue in front of the "New This Week" racks of titles. Folks would have to maneuver around two guys for hours because they wouldn't give an inch before they proved that their favorite book blew away anything else on the market. But we digress. Ah, yes, Cyberforce. And the X-Men reference. Sorry, we really can't get away from that square-off because Marc Silvestri did art for both titles. And it wasn't that long of a stretch between them. Hey, we're going back to when Joe Chiodo was coloring. It was a different time, okay? Like with anything, Cyberforce changed over time, and the most popular character, Ripclaw, turned evil as Satan. He was the bad guy in the later JLA/Cyberforce crossover. Ripclaw actually walked the walk with Cyber-Zombies. Flash to today's news, and we see that the past has not only caught up with us, but it's made us trip on the sidewalk. Apart from the bruises, yeah we're scratched up - but we've got Ron Marz and Pat Lee on Cyberforce #1 - baby! Yep, Top Cow goes back to the roots. And Ripclaw is still nasty. Interesting things can happen when the people involved don't care about you. The possibilities are endless. Freaking endless. Bottom line, Velocity, Cyblade and Ballistic have to stop one person: Ripclaw. Either some one fights, or someone falls. Cyberforce #1 can be found in the Top Cow section of Previews! Shi Makes The Cut A rookie does not get the red carpet treatment at the Academy Awards. You've got to have the goods, and people around you have to know it. This rule especially applies in the comics biz. If you're not up to snuff, don't expect for people to see many issues of your hero dude on the shelf. There's a lot of competition out there, and they're pretty tough company. This case can be made by Billy Tucci, who's taken his kabuki-faced sweetheart around the track several times throughout the years. His sohei warrior has been popular in a lot of circles for over a decade. The comic's been translated in six different languages. You don't get that kind of circulation by printing zines out of your basement. The year was 1994, and Billy Tucci had just solicited Shi under his fledgling company, Empire Publications. He had no idea that his gamble would pay off. All he knew was that everything was riding on the book. And he got his answer on March 23, 1994, when the first 37,000 copies of Shi ~ The Way of the Warrior #1 were shipped to comic book retailers across North America and the United Kingdom. The head start turned into a cross over the finish line because he would go on to sell an additional 140,000 copies as reorders. See for yourself why Shi is still at the top of her game with the Definitive Shi: The Essential Warrior Volume 1 TP that includes the entire runs of "The Way of the Warrior," "Tomoe," "Rekishi," and "Senryaku." Look for it in from Crusade Entertainment in the Comics section of Previews! Hero Double Decker Fans of the absurd, here's what you should consider for your next free weekend: settle in for a Terry Gillian movie marathon on your DVD player, and plan on Hero Squared Ongoing #1 to be at the top of your reading pile. You always have endless options to be weird if you put your mind to it. But if you want someone to come up with a crazy thought for you, we'd like to point to the new comic from Boom! Studios that's the brain child of old schoolers Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis. Milo is a slacker not envied by anyone. People tend to walk through guys like Milo. Even though he's in front of you, it doesn't matter. But should you take another look at Mr. Cellophane, you'll see that he moonlights as Captain Valor in a parallel universe! And his girlfriend is his archenemy in the same parallel universe. Look for the wacky Hero Squared Ongoing #1 from Boom! Studios in the Comics section of Previews! Sin City Nancy Statue (Dynamic Forces) Those who went to see Sin City were of two crowds: those who had read the comic series, and those who had not. So those with knowledge of the series had a slight advantage. We knew that the girls in this film had to be hot. It was a pre-requisite. And, oh, how some of the lovely ladies did look their best when they were nekkid. One lady, however, didn't get down to her birthday suit, but the fact is that she didn't need to because what was left to the imagination was enough for us. Both male camps in the theater had the same reaction to Jessica Alba when she came out as Nancy Callahan. The reaction was that our jaws were getting sticky with the candy, soda, and popcorn on the floor. So we had to pick up our jaws off the floor, and set them straight again. Then we had to remember to blink. Jessica Alba was not only perfect for the role of Nancy Callahan, she was a vision of heaven. So if you want to visit those pearly gates again, you'll definitely want to re-visit the version of Nancy that inspired Alba's onscreen cheesecake. You can choose from both "Regular" and "High-End Bronze" editions of the DF Frank Miller's Sin City: Nancy Statue. In both cases, you're treated to the ravishing femme fatale whose good looks can not only stop traffic, but keep you home from your day job. Sculptor William Paquet gives us Nancy's beautiful body from head to toe. She stands 12.5" tall (including the pole), 13.25" wide and 7" deep, with unbelievable detailing. Look for it in the Dynamic Forces section of Previews! The Seventh Son Revealed Publisher Dabel Brothers Productions brings to comics a six-issue mini-series that stems from the books of Orson Scott Card. The books reflect how folk lore and folk magic played into the lives of the 19th century settlers of the Northwest Territory. Card creates an alternate frontier America where magic colors the lives of colonial settlers, and a young boy is destined to become something great and powerful. In Tales of Alvin Maker-Red Prophet #1, we meet the young boy who is the seventh son of a seventh son. Such an occurrence hasn't happened for centuries. And so, no one knows what part he'll play in the war between the Red men and the White Man. Look for it in the Comics section! New Treasure From Kirby Archives Twomorrows Publishing unfolds the Silver Star Graphite Edition for Jack Kirby fans who can't get enough of the King! Put down that copy of Kamandi, and feast your eyes on the complete story of "Ho-Geneticus." He's part of the New Breed of humanity that spawns both hero (Silver Star) and villain (the nefarious Darius Drumm). Kirby's provocative screenplay for the story is also reproduced in its entirety. All profits from this amazing Treasury Collection will go to the Jack Kirby Museum. Look for it in the Comics section of Previews! Bare Bones Last Word on Pricing If you're browsing through boxes, you don't have all day to go browsing through pages of unnecessary text. What you need is a quick index to information, and that's why it's imperative you pick up The Big! Big! Overstreet Price Guide Volume 36 from Gemstone Publishing. This is a no-frills edition, and features only the pricing, top ten charts, and selected glossary and text from the regular edition of the Guide. Complete with stay-flat spiral binding, this is the last word on comic values! Look for it in the Comics section of Previews! JLA Second String Weighs In The Atom and Dr. Fate were not always the first ones to slide down the pole at the firehouse when trouble erupted across town. The regulars handled it. But then you get those summer crossovers, and other special events that drag in the second wave of heroes who are just as effective in a fight-but called up at the last minute. Show you support for The Atom and Dr Fate with the new line of Justice League Mini-Paperweights showcased in this month's Collectibles and Novelties section. These guys need their 15 minutes again! Sky Ape and Disaffected Youth Who remembers the time in high school when you made the oath not to let the older generation's pessimism cloud your future goals? If you forgot that pledge, it's because you've fallen under the spell of the arch villain Williamson in San Diego! He is the man who must be crushed and beaten in Sky Ape: King of Girls One- Shot. After all, Sky Ape is content to stay isolated and funky when left alone. He's not a threat. The man who seeks to destroy the male 18-35 demographic in all segments of the entertainment market is the one we should hang in the public square! Look for this surreal tale from AIT/Planetlar in the Comics section! Marvel Signed Lithographs Many comic book fans find their tastes change as they grow older. One of the more popular trends that has emerged for older fans is framed art. Offices are increasingly sporting pictures of Spider-Man and other spandex swingers. If this is your bag, then you'll like what you see when you check out the Ghost Rider By Andrew Robinson Signed Lithograph, and the Marvel Knights By Dave Johnson Signed Lithograph. Both come either framed or unframed. Look for them in the Prints & Posters section of Previews. Clamshell Shirts Still Smokin' The hottest novelty to hit the T-Shirt business is still a favorite here at Previews. We're talking, of course, about Clamshell packaging for T-Shirts featuring your favorite comic characters. This month, superhero fans can choose from the Batman Logo T-Shirt, the Green Lantern Faux Embroidery Logo T-Shirt, the Punisher "In Sight" T-Shirt, and the Spider-Man: "Immortal" T-Shirt. Anime fans get a treat, too, and they can check out the Naruto: "Group In Shapes" T-Shirt! All of these babies are in the Apparel section of Previews!
