----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] JAPANESE BAD, CHINESE GOOD Irish actor J. CARROLL NAISH played Chan in the 1950's TV series, which was also adapted to comics by DC. Naish was familiar with their product, since in the 1943 serial BATMAN, he had played Japanese spymaster DR. DAKA. He ended his career playing DR. FRANKENSTEIN in FRANKENSTEIN VS DRACULA in the 1970's. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [10] Rich's Reviews Richard Vasseur richardv@sympatico.ca http://www.jazmaonline.com [Rich has been collecting comic books for about 25 years. He belongs to two comic book clubs Jazma and ORCA. He has been writing reviews for Jazma's paper newsletter for about 2 years and has his own review page at www.jazmaonline.com] SPOILER WARNING: Some plot details may be revealed in these reviews! Title: Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk # 1 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Damon Lindelof Artist: Leinil Francis Yu Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can rating: 2 out of 5 stars Comments: The Hulk ripped Wolverine in half! Talk about an exciting start! Betty Ross, Jen Walters, Nick Fury who are these people? In the Ultimate Universe these characters are totally different from the regular Universe. Having Wolverine going hunting the Hulk is great to see. Also Wolverine's attitude is right on. The art should be clearer. The Hulk well is just a murderous sex crazed behemoth. He goes around killing and raping. This Hulk is evil and deserves to die. You see none of the honor and humanity that in the regular Marvel Universe kept the Hulk in check. This Hulk may be stronger but he is a pale pathetic version when compared to the real one. Wolverine does generate some interest. With his attitude and seeing him crawling after his lower body. Wolverine is one tough Canucklehead. Title: Ultimate Fantastic Four Annual # 1 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Mark Millar Artist: Jae Lee Price: $ 3.99 US, $ 5.75 Can Rating: 2 out of 5 stars Comments: The Ultimate Inhumans Lockjaw certainly is different looking than the regular Universe one. The art though on Lockjaw is a magnificant piece of art. Gorgon is a woman here. I didn't think it possible but the Royal Family of the Inhumans actually looks stupid. Karnak is an old man. Tritan is just weird in appearance. Black Bolt his face is a blank stare. The Royal Family, especially Black Bolt needs to have a more commanding presence. His eyes should be used as well as his face to convey emotions but they are not. The FF and Inhumans while they are shown here they are little more than just fixtures. They are there and thats it. Johnny is shown as an uncaring hero. He has to be told to act. He is just a womanizer using his powers to attract woman for sex. These are pale imitations of the real versions in the regular Universe. Title: Purgatori # 3 Publisher: Devil's Due Writer: Robert Rodi Artist: Cliff Richards Price: $ 2.95 US Rating: 4 stars out of 5 stars Comments: This Purgatori seems ashamed of how she is. Ashamed of her corrupted body. As she relates her tale she seems like a whining baby. This Purgatori did not want to be Purgatori it is a punishment to her from God. As he once punished the Morningstar so he now punishes her. One thing you will notice is that Purgatori is naked a lot. The art is lovely showing her off. She looks great as do all the Egyptian women. She is just to submissive. Her only hope od redemption is to submit herself to love with humility and selflessness. But then Rath enters her life. Evil permeats the very air around him. He is a vampiric creature who will perhaps redeem Purgatori by making her not want to be redeemed. This lowly slave who hoped to rise to the highest heights has been thrown to the lowest depths. Purgatori will capture your heart, just be careful she doesn't tip it out. Title:Ghost Rider # 5 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Garth Ennis Artist: Clayton Crain Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Comments: Demons are free and its Hell on Earth. The demon horde are ready to war on man. The art is dark but the fires of Ghost Rider light up the drawings. His skeletal skull has no emotions but it is just a skull an amazingly well drawn one. The demon Kazaan should be shown better. He is kept to much in shadows and to much out of the spot light. Ghost Rider breathing fire that looks like a shooting bullet or rocket was great it made for an amazing piece of art. Title: Infinite Crisis Special Day Of Vengeance Publisher: DC Writer: Bill Willingham Penciler: Justiniano Inkers: Walden Wong, Wayne Faucher Price: $ 3.99 US, $ 5.50 Can Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Comments: As destruction reigns on Gotham the mystical based heroes join together it is a grand assemble. Probably half of these heroes you will have never heard of. Even Rex the Wonder Dog is here. It is great seeing all these heroes pulling together against a common foe. The Shadowpack get to take on the Seven Deadly Sins as Nabu battles the Spectre. The ending to this battle will surprise you. The changes to the universe caused by the Spectre have just begun. They needed though to get into the characters of the Shadowpack. This comic is a lead in to a new series featuring the Shadowpack. It will be nice to see them without other magical people stealing the spot light. Ragman is the most interesting of the group. He needs to be used more. Title: JLA # 124 Publisher: DC Writer: Bob Harras Penciler: Tom Derenick Inker: Dan Green Price: $ 2.50 US, $ 3.50 Can Rating: 2 out of 5 stars Comments: Well there is still no JLA team. Green Arrow, Black Canary and Batman are all after the Key who has Dawn captive. They do not function as a team, they do not work together. The one Deadly Sin Envy takes control of Green Arrow. GA than attacks Batman. Somehow in hand to hand combat GA actually has the upper hand. The Key is drawn looking wildly insane. Black Canary comes across as sexy. GA and Batman are both tough guys. The art is excellent it just needs a better story with it. The art is clear, crisp. The colors are vivid. The poses are emotional and action packed. Title: Vampirella: Revelations # 2 Publisher: Harris Comics Writer: Mike Carey Penciler: Mike Lilly Inker: Bob Almond Price: $ 2.99 US Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Comments: The demons, the Scullions are a fiendish looking horde. Their hellish appearance decked out in weapons and fangs makes them a fearsome sight. Vampirella though is kept in shadows and not drawn well at all. What you can see of her looks slutty rather than sexy. The two page centerfold is a beautiful artistic drawing of Vampirella with vicious bats flapping around her. Her flowing hair, the color tone of her skin and the rich colors make this stand out. As a demon tortures her Vampirella remembers who she is. She erupts in violence. She will wipe her opposition from existance. She is death in high heels! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] SAME LOOK, DIFFERENT SIDE Before he took on the series role of Charlie Chan, star Warner Oland also played FU MANCHU in three feature films. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [11] Multiverse Observer and Explorer Reviews Paul Dale Roberts Silhouet98@cs.com http://www.jazmaonline.com [Paul promotes amateur and professional comic book artwork, scripts, storylines, and unpublished comic books with a newsletter called the Peoples' Comic Book Newsletter. He is in production of his own self-published comic book called The Legendary Dark Silhouette and has copyrighted over 600 characters for his Jazma Universe.] SPOILER WARNING: THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Name: Comic Effect #44 Publisher: Jim Kingman Price: $3.50 Contact Information: Jim Kingman, PO Box 2188, Pasadena, CA 91102-2188 Email: jkcomeff@aol.com Website: www.comiceffect.com Comments: Super great Ed Quinby artwork that includes a crossover of the Fantastic Four, Batman & Robin in the Batmobile, Brother Power and the Spectre! In this issue, Jim talks about 'writer's block' in his Letter from the Editor. Some very interesting comments. When you're inspired by something, it's very easy to write about it, I remember being inspired of hoping that every Golden Age and Silver Age comic book would be scanned in it's entirety and placed on the Internet. I have now discovered that some fans are actually doing this, it's a monumental task, but I think it's important that every comic book in existence is scanned and available on the Internet for posterity and available research by fans. Google is working on a project to scan every book and Million Books Online has many volunteers scanning books. So, if they can do books, they can do comic books. Oh shoot, I got off the subject, but Jim had me thinking. Let's talk about issue #44. There are reviews of: The Fantastic Four #1, The Spectre - In the Silver Age - A Personal Overview by N. David Luhn, Poison Ivy: The Clinging Vine- Villainess by Gene Phillips, Brother Power the Geek #1 & #2 Sept/Oct/Nov/Dec 1968 DC Comics by Jason Sacks. Sidebar: Jason makes some great comments on this comic book, when most of us thought this comic book was garbage. Jason makes some good points, you'll have to buy Comic Effect #44 to see what I am talking about. Another Sidebar: Remember all overviews/reviews in this digest have some great artwork to go with it. The artwork are actually taken from the comic book the reviewers are talking about. Let's see what else is in here? Ahh...yes, here we go: The Fantastic Four #2 Jan 62, Marvel Comics by Gene Phillips. An article called: Comics without Capes by Alan Rankin with information on Calvin and Hobbes, Art Spiegelman/Maus, The Cartoon History of the Universe II by Larry Gonick, Alison Bechdel, Scott McCloud/Understanding Comics/Reinventing Comics, Strangers in Paradise, Derek Kirk Kim and of course Bone! Then we have reviews on: Crisis on Infinite Earths - A Novel by Marv Wolfman - reviewed by Scott Rubens, 7 Soldiers: 40s Take, 70s Style - The Seven Soldiers of Victory in Adventure Comics - Illumnated by Jim Kingman. Jim elaborates that in 1974 an unused Seven of Soldiers of Victory story written by Joe Samachson in the 1940s was discovered in the DC files. Editor Joe Orlando enlisted a group of then current artists to illustrate each chapter and the rest is history. Jim goes into plenty of detail about this historical title. Jim goes into detail about The Shining Knight, Green Arrow & Speedy, The Crimson Avenger & Wing, Star Spangled Kid & Stripesy and The Vigilante. Then last, but not least is a review by Howard Leroy Davis on Charlton Spotlight #4 Fall 2005 - Argo Press. Jim may have temporary writer's block, but he comes out with a most-excellent publication! This digest is an incredibly fun read!! MOE Sidenote: Entered the A1 Comics Stargate and encountered the following realities: Vaistron #3 by Slave Labor Graphics; The Iron Ghost #5 by Image; Thunderbird #2 by Atlantis Studios; Andi Watson's Little Star; Jindai #3 by Zenescope Entertainment; Jenna #2 by Narwain Publishing; Hiroaki Samura's Blade of the Immortal #109 by Dark Horse Comics; The Walking Dead #25 by Image; Rex Mundi 1b by Shrunkenhead Studios; The Super-Scary Monster Show featuring Little Gloomy #3; Nitrogen #1 by Arcade Comics; Silent Hill Dead/Alive #1 by IDW; Robotika #1 by Archaia; Super Bad James Dynomite #1 by 5-D Comics; Sundown Arizona #3 of 3 by Arcana; Seasons of the Reaper #1 by Speakeasy Comics; Fallen Angel #1 by IDW; Emily the Strange #2 by Dark Horse Comics; Further Adventures of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers by Gilbert Shelton; Malinky Robot #2 by Slave Labor Graphics; Lucky Bamboo Presents A Hellion (and others) by Lucky Bamboo Productions; Brian Wood/Ryan Kelly Local #2 by Oni Press; Ethan Young's Tails; Conan #24 by Dark Horse Comics; Tales of the TMNT #18; Strange Girl #5 - Life After God Pt. 1; The Goon #15; TMNT #25 by Mirage Studios. Well, let me get out of here, I need to play "Urban Golf". What is Urban Golf? You go to a major city and start golfing on the main street, of course there is some liability issues that's if you break windows or if you hit people over the head with a golf ball. What is fun about Urban Golfing, is the challenge, if you accidently hit a gangbanger or a cop in the head with a flying golfball, the game gets even more exciting, I think you get the picture. If you never played Urban Golf, give it a try. Oh, almost forgot, went to see Underworld: Evolution, Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, Peter Jackson's King Kong and Quentin Tarantino's Hostel. If you want some great Matrix type of action, see Underworld: Evolution, Count Dracula highly recommends it! The fantasy in Narnia was incredible! King Kong just didn't thrill me, I guess because I already know the story and have seen the original and all of the remakes, I'm bored with King Kong. Now if they had another storyline about King Kong, that would gain my interest. Hostel was scary as all heck. This movie is scarier than Texas Chainsaw Massacre! Multiverse Observer and Explorer (aka Paul Dale Roberts) signing off until next time..... Name: Beauty is the Beast Vol 1 Publisher: Shojo Beat Manga Story & Art: Tomo Matsumoto Price: $8.99 Website: www.shojobeat.com Comments: The main character Eimi Yamashita learns that her parents are planning to move, because of job opportunities. She doesn't want to move, so she decides to move into a dormitory with 4 girls as roommates. She has many romantic adventures while living in this dormitory and soon Eimi must go through an initiation. That initiation requires her to go into the boy's dormitory and find a keepsake and bring it back. But, things go terribly wrong when she sneaks into the boy's dormitory and is confronted by a very handsome, but very cruel boy. The artwork is average Manga. This is a story that women and girls should enjoy. I found myself getting sleepy in some parts of the story, luckily I was drinking my mocha. This graphic novel when finished should go with the DVD Green Fried Tomatoes. Read the story and then watch the movie and make it a girly night! Name: Earthian Publisher: Blu Story & Art: Yun Kouga Price: $14.99 Comments: Now I loved this story! I love the fantasy artwork that goes with the story too! Chihaya & Kagetsuya are angels, yes, they are agents of heaven and they are watching over mankind. They are looking for the positive and negative in human beings. They go undercover and get involved with human's affairs. One of their missions is looking after an astronaut that is going on a dangerous mission. Another mission is looking out for a sorceress that is running away from the mafia. And the best mission they investigate is looking after a artificial human. While all this is going on, there is a disease, a plague that has touched upon the angels. The angels lives are in jeopardy because of this newfound plague. A major player steps in and his name is Lord Seraphim! This is not like the TV series "Touched by an Angel", this is something way different, check it out! Name: Alichino Publisher: Tokyopop Story & Art: Kouyu Shurei Price: $9.99 Website: www.tokyopop.com Comments: Okay, this is the Multiverse Observer and Explorer speaking and I just told you about Earthian by Blu and Beauty is the Beast by Shojo Beat Manga, well here is a story that is pure fun. If you love comradry, then you should check this graphic novel out. Manga fans will love this book, because their favorite characters like Ryoko, Myobi, Hibiki, Matsurika all meet in this story! It's the Manga crossover of crossovers! You'll have fun seeing Ryoko meet up with Tsugiri, then they come across Hibiki who at the time is being used and abused by Matsurika. When Matsurika gets ahold of something, Matsurika does not let go. And the next target is Tsugiri! You will wonder if they 'all can get along?' The artwork is exceptional in this Manga graphic novel too! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics.
