TERRY MOORE (STRANGERS IN PARADISE) TO APPEAR AT AUSTIN BOOKS'
FUNDRAISER FOR THE COMIC BOOK LEGAL DEFENSE FUND

On Friday February 3rd, Austin Books & Comics will host a
fundraiser and membership drive for the CBLDF from 8-11 PM with
special guest Terry Moore, creator of Eisner Award winning
STRANGERS IN PARADISE: http://www.strangersinparadise.com/ to
support the preservation of First Amendment rights for members of
the comics community.

"This is a great opportunity for us to help the cause of free
speech," said Austin Books & Comics Owner Brad Bankston. "This
fund is a necessity in the ever evolving marketplace, not
everyone is lucky enough to live in a town as free-minded as
Austin."

The party will be limited to 200 tickets sold for a $10 donation.
CBLDF members get in free: memberships will be sold at the door
for $25. Their donation gets partygoers food, beer and an
exclusive STRANGERS IN PARADISE lithograph produced by Terry
Moore especially for the event. Partygoers also receive a 25%
discount on all graphic novels/trade paperbacks and 50% off back
stock comics. There will also be a chance for attendees to win
door prizes including STRANGERS IN PARADISE statues autographed
by Terry Moore and master sculptor Clayburn S. Moore. Terry Moore
will be doing original sketches for additional donations and
there will be a silent auction for comics merchandise donated by
Austin Books & Comics, Terry Moore, Clayburn S. Moore, and Texas
publishers Antarctic Press, Lone Star Press, Penny Farthing Press
and Viper Comics.

CBLDF Executive Director, Charles Brownstein, commented, "Austin
Books has gone above and beyond in creating a great event that
rewards the Fund's members. We're grateful to Brad and his
excellent crew, and to Terry and Robyn Moore for getting together
to put on a great show for this great cause".

Fans will also get to hang out with Terry Moore, creator of the
internationally published story of three friends, Francine,
Katchoo and David and the people they fall in and out of love
with. It's a tale of dark pasts and hopeful futures, double-
crosses and true friendship, love and hate.

In other words: it's a story of real life, kicked up a notch.

SiP creator Terry Moore says, "This is going to be a great party
for a cause we really believe in. I look forward to meeting all
the great fans in Austin and to doing my bit to support the
CBLDF's important work."

AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR BRINGS BEST SELLING SERIES TO DESPERADO

Mark Chadbourn to Produce Prequel to the Age of Misrule in Graphic
Novel Format

February 2, 2006, Atlanta, GA - Continuing its mission of publishing
the highest quality comics from top-notch creators, Desperado
Publishing is set to release Book of Shadows, award-winning British
fantasy author, Mark Chadbourn's, eagerly anticipated prequel to his
best selling three novel series, The Age of Misrule. Book of Shadows
will feature full color art by Bo Hampton and both 32 page issues will
be on sale in April each with a cover price of $3.50.

In Book of Shadows the ancient pagan gods are returning to the land
from which they were banished millennia ago. Following in their
footsteps are creatures of folklore: the Fabulous Beasts, shape-
shifters and Night Walkers, and other, less wholesome beings. As they
grow in power, so technology starts to fail. It is myth and magic that
now rule supreme in this new Dark Age: The Age of Misrule.

In this time of trouble, one flawed young woman has a great part to
play.  Traumatized by the recent death of her boyfriend, Annie
Lovelock
spends her nights in desperate Wiccan rituals.until she accidentally
conjures up one of those beings, the Morrigan, the fearsome goddess of
blood and death.  Gifted abilities that she does not understand and
sent on a quest beyond her comprehension, Annie finds herself caught
in
a war between two age-old rivals for power.

She must find a way to cross the barrier between this world and the
mysterious, magical home of the fabled beings to reclaim an object of
power.  But is Annie being manipulated into delivering up humanity to
the forces that now rule our world?

"With Book of Shadows I wanted to tell a story that was firmly rooted
in a genre that is under-represented in comics - fantasy," said
Chadbourn. "But instead of setting the tale in some ancient time or
unknown land, I wanted to bring the wonder and the mystery right to
the
reader's doorstep...in the world we see around us."

Chadbourn is the author of 14 novels including World's End, Darkest
Hour and Always Forever. He has written for British television and
currently serves as senior writer on the series Doctors. He has also
worked as a journalist writing for magazines and newspapers and he's
written the comic books Raven Chronicles, Fatalis and Negative Burn.
He
has won the British Fantasy Award, August Derleth Award for Best Novel
and Fear magazine Best New Author award.

"Book of Shadows is exactly the type of series I want to publish at
Desperado," said Desperado Publishing publisher, Joe Pruett. "It's a
great fantasy tale with a built in audience. Once Mark's readers
realize that he has taken The Age of Misrule into comics and that this
is the only place this prequel story will be available, I expect
retailers will be in for a treat."

Nextwave #1 Sells Out Quicker Than Your Favorite Underground Band

Nextwave #1 has sold out at Diamond but don't worry about
beating yourself up if you missed out; after all, Nextwave is all
about healing America by beating people up.

The creative team of Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen are
doing the unthinkable with Nextwave, but that's only because no
else has thought to question why Fin Fang Foom wears underwear.
Plus, anyone who has read the first issue loves it more than
their own mother.

Drew Sheneman of the Newark Star Ledger says, "The concept
combines humorous elements from his work on comics like
Transmetropolitan and bizarre touches from his soon-to-be-
completed run on Planetary. Ellis himself describes the series as
'People get kicked, things explode.' Who wouldn't like that?"

Kelvin Green of SilverBulletComicBooks.com says, "Ellis seems to
be playing with the absurdities of the Marvel Universe...and it
makes for a wonderful read, with every page having at least one
eminently quotable moment.  This is the Warren Ellis comic I've
been waiting for."

Drew Harmon of SilverBulletComics.com gives Nextwave #1 a "5 out
of 5.  You should jump on Nextwave now, so you can say I was
reading that since before it was cool, and cool is definitely
what Nextwave is.  Nextwave will be the Next Big Thing."

Nextwave is the newest ongoing series from Marvel
bringing you action, explosions, and people getting kicked in
easily digestible 1 to 2 issue story arcs.  No antacid needed!

There are currently no plans to go back to press so
retailers are advised to check their orders for issue #2, which
features "Live Gill on Grill Action" as Machine Man takes on the
legendary Fin Fang Foom.  Oh yeah, and even more explosions and
people getting kicked than the first issue.

On the Road to Civil War Comes A Costume

After the life-changing events of the Other, Spider-
Man has become a new man and Tony Stark has decided to mark the
occasion by giving Peter Parker a brand-new costume in Amazing
Spider-Man #529.  And if a new costume wasn't enough already to
mark this a milestone issue, what begins in Amazing Spider-Man
#529 lays the groundwork for Marvel's event of 2006: Civil War!

Executive Editor Tom Brevoort says, "Amazing Spider-
Man #529 begins a three-issue arc that will justifiably be cover-
blurbed as part of the 'Road to Civil War,' as Tony Stark and his
new protege Peter Parker journey to Washington to debate
superhuman legislation in the wake of 'Decimation.'  And for
readers who aren't as into parliamentary procedure, there'll also
be a smackdown between Spidey in his spiffy new costume and a
villain from Iron Man's past!"

You know what that sounds like, True Believer?  That's
right folks, a Civil War is forming on the horizon and the road
to war starts right here in Amazing Spider-Man #529!

But before you see any Marvel superheroes on the
battlefront, you MUST see Spider-Man's new costume.

You've seen the previews of the new suit; now see Spider-
Man put his new costume into action.  This is no mere fashion
change either, as the costume is actually an armor equipped with
several pieces of advanced weaponry, including pincer claws and
many others surprises.

The best part of all is that Peter is going to be
getting accustomed to his new armor on the fly, surprising his
foes, readers, and even himself with the suit's capabilities.

Straczynski has spun some of the greatest Spider-Man
tales in years and reviewers have been quick to note that his
work to date has been especially exciting to read.

Barry Shaffner of PaperbackReader.com says, "The day Mr.
Straczynski leaves this title will be a sad one for me. He
constantly produces quality work. This is the one Marvel comic
book to read every month."

If you are a fan of anything Marvel, you cannot miss
Amazing Spider-Man #529, featuring the debut of Spider-Man's all-
new costume as well as serving as a huge marker on the road to
the blockbuster event known only as Civil War.  Jump onboard for
an exciting new era for Spider-Man as well and the entire Marvel
Universe.

Nextwave #1 Director's Cut: Sneak Peak Behind the Kicking and
Exploding

Nextwave #1 sold out at Diamond earlier this week and
thanks to a groundswell of requests, Marvel is releasing a second
printing of the madcap first issue with a few extras.  Nextwave #1
Directors's Cut brings you behind the scenes of Stuart Immonen's art
as
well as bringing you farther into the mind of Warren Ellis than anyone
should ever dare.

Just ask modest editor Nick Lowe how he thinks Nextwave #1
Director's Cut is shaping up.  "Some say that I am a tad over-
enthusiastic, but this is going to be, by far, the best Director's Cut
EVER!" says the ever-exuberant Lowe.  "Eat your heart out, Quesada!
Enjoy the back seat, Whedon!  Warren's script is hilarious and
Stuart's
sketches are genius.  And who hasn't been waiting for Warren's
original
pitch for the series?  I know you have, anonymous reader!"

Nextwave #1 Director's Cut brings to you the genesis
behind
how Nextwave sprung from Warren Ellis's mind into your very hands,
including Warren's pitch about the series (slightly censored) as well
as his script for the first issue (even more than slightly censored).

Stuart Immonen offers a look behind the visual style of
Nextwave with designs of the cast, sketch designs of the vehicles of
Nextwave, as well as the cover sketch to the first issue.

Ready for the best part? The Director's Cut is only $2.99,
with all of this bonus content being offered at no extra cost with no
ads!

How good is Nextwave?  Humphrey Lee of Ain't It Cool News says,
"Nextwave is an unbelievably quirky book. Nextwave is absolutely
hilarious at times and has an uncanny sort of energy to it. Nextwave
is
a book showcasing everything you enjoy about superhero action and a
critique on the more absurd things of the genre. But most of all,
Nextwave is just plain fun.  If you like fun comics, then you should
own this now."

In an effort to help out retailers who missed out on the
first issue, the release date and FOC of Nextwave #2 is being pushed
back a week to give retailers an extra week to place their orders.
The
extra week also gives Ellis and Immonen an extra week to get even
further ahead as Ellis is currently finishing up his script for issue
#9 and Immonen is closing in on the end of issue #4.

The creative team is working at a feverish pace eerily
similar to the pace of an issue of Nextwave, pumping out future
stories
like "Good Cop, Giant Robot Cop" as fast as all-get-out to bring to
you, you guessed it, more kicking and exploding!

Fans be advised that there may be first issues still available at
the retail level.  Also, retailers should check their orders on issue
#2.

SAVE SPIDER-GIRL CAMPAIGN IN FULL SWING

The grass roots campaign to save Spider-Girl is in full force.
We've got an open letter from the Save Spider-Girl Group about
their efforts to keep Peter Parker's teen daughter's adventures
new and fresh.

Marcus Sarzalejo the PR manager of savespidergirl.com has issued
this statement:

Spider-Man's daughter is in danger and he can't save her.
But her fans can. Spider-Girl has the longest running title
for a female superhero in the history of Marvel Comics, but
the company plans to end her run when her historic 100th
issue hits comic book racks this August.

Marvel has announced Spider-Girl's cancellation several
times in the last five years, and each time her fans
rallied with petitions and letter-writing campaigns and
averted the cancellation.

This devotion prompted Spider-Girl's co-creator, the
veteran Spider-Man writer Tom DeFalco, to say, "Those fans
have managed to keep Spider-Girl alive. They never gave up
on the title. Not even when Marvel canceled it and told me
there was no hope of ever bringing it back. Spider-Girl
lives because of her fans!"

With this latest cancellation threat, a group of fans have
united across the Internet to coordinate marketing Spider-
Girl's monthly comic book in their spare time. They have
sent fliers advertising upcoming issues to comic book shops
across the country. Within days, several retailers have
pledged to increase their Spider-Girl orders.

Sarzalejo is hoping other people will try the series or fans will
recommend issues to other comic readers. The digests featuring
Spider-Girl continue to do well in the book stores and have
proven to be very popular with younger female readers. Over the
past few years, Spider-Girl has been threatened with cancellation
on a regular basis. This latest news came within days of a PULSE
interview with artist and co-creator Ron Frenz about the series.
In that interview, Frenz said:

"We're clear 'til # 106. We've just began sowing the seeds
to what will be the big story in issue # 100. I came up
with a design for her costume on the cover of # 100 that I
really like. It's pretty wild to be working on this series
now and there's no reason to believe that we won't be
renewed past that number as well. The Digests have been
selling incredibly well."

A few days later Frenz said the series was only safe until issue
# 100.

The Save Spider-Girl group is hoping their grass roots campaign
will keep MayDay Parker's head off the chopping block again.

Spider-Girl's plight has also gained the attention of Crain's New
York Business Magazine. Crain's did an article alerting people to
the cancellation of the series with issue # 100. You can read
that article at the Comic Boards here:

The Dark Knight Returns
The dark prince of comix takes Batman 30 years into the future.
 By Todd Jatras

Almost every night, Paul Pope is anchored to a stool at a
battered drafting table in his spare fifth-floor walk-up in
Manhattan's SoHo. His apartment is the perfect loner's lair -
shower in the kitchen, tidy stacks of books, few personal
effects, and crumpled papers around the table that suggest a
pressing, desperate deadline. It's Pope's own Batcave, a place of
comfort and order where he can be single-minded in pursuit of his
mission.

Pope, a 35-year-old graphic novelist, keeps odd hours, working
until after midnight and then typically heading out to a local
bar. (He suggested I phone him at 2 am to follow up on an
interview.) On this brisk December night at Puck Fair, an Irish
pub in lower Manhattan, Pope is attracting not-so-fleeting
glances from strangers. They don't know him - the comic-book
superstar is rarely recognized outside certain circles. But he
has a distinct presence. Maybe it's his fashion-forward style and
gritty good looks. People see him and scratch their heads. Isn't
he the lead singer of that Brit-pop band? Isn't he the guy in
that buzzy new indie flick?

The fact is, Paul Pope is about to go mainstream. In February, DC
Comics will release the first installment of his four-issue
graphic novel, Batman: Year 100, which reinvents the caped
crusader yet again. The 200-page miniseries imagines the
superhero in the year 2039, and it's backed by the power of the
Batman franchise and DC's multimillion-dollar marketing muscle.
In other words, Pope is set to soar to glory on the spandex cape-
tails of one of the most profitable superheroes ever.

He won't be the first artist to benefit from Batman. Bob Kane,
who drew the original Dark Knight in 1939, instantly became a
celebrity and went on to a film and fine-art career. Neal Adams,
who's credited with rescuing the crusader from the high camp of
the 1960s TV series, also reinvented the X-Men before parlaying
his work into a successful film career that earned him enough to
spend his retirement promoting the theory that Earth is
expanding. Then there's Frank Miller, a close friend and mentor
to Pope, whose 1986 miniseries, The Dark Knight Returns, was the
inspiration for Tim Burton's acclaimed movies. It also led to
Miller's runaway success with Sin City, first as the author of
the comic-book series and then as the codirector of the screen
adaptation. Now it's Pope's turn to extend the Gotham legacy. He
likens the experience to "being handed the keys to a really,
really hot car."

Pope keeps the first cartoon character he drew, at age 4, on his
studio wall. It's Batman, inspired by scribblings he made on the
bedsheets in his childhood room in Bowling Green, Ohio. As a
teen, Pope was an awkward Dungeons and Dragons-playing outsider
who hung with the stoner crowd. After studying fine art part-time
for eight years at Ohio State, he left college without a degree
to work for Kodansha, the world's largest manga publisher, in
Japan. It was there that he perfected his signature style, a
brushstroke that is equal parts manga and classic European pop
art.

Since moving to New York in 1998, Pope has created four acclaimed
graphic novels. There's Heavy Liquid and 100%, published under
DC's hardcore Vertigo imprint. Their continued popularity keep
Pope's name in the spotlight. And there's Escapo and THB (for
"tri-hydro-bioxygenate," the chemical name for Pope's fictional
purple biomechanical security guard), more personal works that he
says he's especially proud of; they were released on a smaller
scale through Horse Press, a publishing venture he started back
in Ohio at age 21. The THB series, which New York publisher Henry
Holt has expressed an interest in buying, could wind up being one
of the world's longest comic books. At a projected 2,000-plus
pages, the tome is his magnum opus - what he calls "my Dune."
Pope expects to work on the serialized book, a romantic epic set
on a terraformed Mars, for the rest of his career. He releases
THB in driblets and is nearly halfway done.

He's also venturing beyond the gray pulp of the comic book. This
summer, AdHouse Books will debut a coffee-table collection of his
erotica. That'll be followed a year or so later by Henry Holt's
release of his first kids' series, Battling Boy. The two-book,
400-page fairy tale revolves around a young hero who faces off
against various demons in the city of Monstropolis.

Pope's Batman will battle his own villains. The series is set in
a high-anxiety future, where totalitarianism has nearly snuffed
out the remnants of humanity. America in 2039 is a police state,
individual liberties have been curtailed, and there's a dark
sense of impending doom. Roving police squads, Blade Runner-esque
floating vehicles, and robotic watchdogs scan the skyline. A
distressed-looking Batman is the only person Big Brother fails to
track, and the superhero's mask symbolizes the last hope against
a corrupt government encroaching on individual privacy. "He's
someone with the body of David Beckham, the brain of Nikola
Tesla, and the wealth of Howard Hughes, who is pretending to be
Nosferatu," Pope says.

Pope's grim style is perfectly suited to drawing Batman.
Legendary comics editor Bob Schreck, who has long overseen the
Batman franchise for DC comics, calls him a "far-reaching
visionary" and says it's inevitable that "one or more of his
properties will hit the big screen. He's really just started."

Pope has already had a few close calls with Hollywood. In 1999,
Tim Burton looked into adapting his Escapo, a tale of an escape
artist. But back at Puck Fair, sipping a glass of red wine, Pope
tells me nothing more has come out of it than "shuck and jive."
"I'd take the money," he says, adding that he wouldn't want
anything to do with actually making the film. "I've seen what
Frank went through codirecting Sin City. That's his thing - I
wouldn't want any part of it." Then he laughs, "I'm much more
likely to go into something like fashion design." Now it's my
turn to laugh, as I consider for the first time the exquisitely
imagined outfits that fill his comic books. Batman has never
looked so stylish.
