THE FIRST KINGDOM returns

An outfit known as Century Comics is reprinting THE FIRST KINGDOM
by Jack Katz. Back in the Cretacean Period of independent comics
publishing, there were three self-publishing pioneers -- Dave Sim
with CEREBUS, Wendy Pini with ELFQUEST and Jack Katz with THE
FIRST KINGDOM -- all three were fantasy epics, of a sort. While
CEREBUS and ELFQUEST have gone on to make their mark in comics
history and have fans to this day. FIRST KINGDOM remains little
more than a footnote. From theCentury Comics website:
Jack Katz may not be a household name, but his range of work is
long reaching. Influenced by Milton Caniff, Jack Kirby, Jim
Steranko, Burne Hogarth, Alex Raymond, and Hal Foster, Jack's
work comprises beautiful, detailed line drawings inked with
delicate brush strokes.

Katz first met many of his peers while working for a newspaper
syndicate that published Tarzan, Flash Gordon, and Prince
Valiant. Having worked as a penciler and inker for Atlas, Marvel,
DC and many, many other publishers, Katz broke away to
independently publish his 24-issue opus, The First Kingdom,
beginning in 1973. Logging in at 768 pages, The First Kingdom has
the historical significance as being considered by many as the
first graphic novel ever published in the United States. Jack's
efforts earned him a prestigious Inkpot Award in 1975.

first graphic novel'"

SLG PUBLISHING'S TRON

SLG Publishing and Disney are teaming for a new chapter to the
Tron story with Tron: The Ghost in the Machine, a comic book
written by Landry Walker and Eric Jones and drawn by Louie De
Martinis.

Tron: The Ghost in the Machine, an ongoing series launches in
April, picks up where the video game Tron 2.0 leaves off,
bringing you the same thrilling action, as well as an exploration
of the effects of the cyberworld on the human psyche.

Here's how SLG describes the book:

"Jet Bradley has escaped from the computer world after being
kidnapped and digitized to defeat a nefarious virus. But after
his ordeal, Jet can't seem to adjust to the real world. Beset by
insomnia and paranoia, he avoids technology as much as possible,
leaving him completely unable to function in the modern world.
And now something in the computer world wants him back."

Walker and Jones got their first view of the computer world in
Disney's 1982 cult hit movie, Tron. "I've loved Tron since I
first saw the movie as a kid," Jones said. "The whole concept is
so exciting, since it involves more than 'good versus evil' and
allows for some pretty good twists and turns."

Walker said that Tron: The Ghost in the Machine will be true to
its cinematic and video game roots by not only being an action
story but also delving into the mental trauma protagonist Jet
Bradley suffers by being forced into the computer world.

"Jet is not a hero," Walker said. "He's just an average person
thrust into exceptional, and somewhat horrible circumstances. The
story is more about the psychological challenges Jet faces when
he's disintegrated and reduced to pure information -- that shift
in reality is really going to screw with your head."

SMALLVILLE'S CYBORG

Hot off its 100th episode and the death of Jonathan Kent, The
WB's Smallville will again step into the spotlight with "Cyborg,"
an episode featuring the DC Comics character of the same name.

"Lee Thompson Young, who is playing Victor Stone, is a terrific
actor and we're very excited about it," Smallville executive
producer Al Gough told The Continuum.

Here's how the network describes the episode, which will air on
The WB on Thursday, Feb. 16:

"A sympathetic doctor releases a half-human/half-machine
subject named Victor who was being held captive and experimented
on by LuthorCorp. While making his escape, Victor is struck by
Lana's (Kristin Kreuk) car. After watching him walk away without
a scratch, Lana calls Clark (Tom Welling) to investigate. Clark
befriends Victor and promises to help him find his girlfriend,
but Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) traps Victor and takes him back to
LuthorCorp."

Gough said that Cyborg will be facing the same types of issues
he did in the Teen Titans comics and animated series.

"Victor Stone is a high-school football star who has a full
ride to USC, but then he's in a terrible car accident," Gough
said. "In our version, LuthorCorp takes him on as a project and
sort of builds the limbs and the artificial intelligence that
goes into that.

"It's really a question, just like in the Teen Titans show, of,
'How much humanity do I have? How much machine am I?' Clark
teaches him how to control his abilities. And he realizes his
life isn't what he thought it was going to be, but he can still
have a fulfilling life, and Clark helps put him on that road."

The episode was written by Caroline Dries and directed by Glen
Winter.

DYNAMITE LANDS ORIGINAL BATTLESTAR GALACTICA RIGHTS

Tuesday, Dynamite Entertainment announced that in addition to
their announced acquisition of the license to produce a comic
book series [written by Greg Pak] based on the SCI FI original
new Battlestar Galactica series, they've also acquired the
license to produce comics based on the original Battlestar
Galactica series, originally aired on ABC beginning in 1978 and
currently airing on SCI-FI along with its new "cousin".

No creative details were released. The following is the full text
of Dynamiter's press release...

Press Release
Dynamite Entertainment announced today its agreement with
Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to produce comics based
on the classic Battlestar Galactica series. Recently Dynamite
Entertainment signed a deal to launch a comic series based on the
new SCI FI Channel Battlestar Galactica series. The comic series
based on the new season of Battlestar Galactica is tentatively
scheduled to launch 2nd Quarter 2006 with writer Greg Pak penning
the ongoing series.

"Battlestar is one of the classic and most beloved sci-fi TV
shows of all time," commented Dynamite Spokesperson J. Allen. "We
are proud to bring new adventures of the classic cast to comic
fans. The classic Battlestar line adds to some great creators and
titles we have lined up for 2006. The opening lines of that show
are still etched in my brain from childhood."

The company will be announcing creative teams, launch dates and
marketing efforts for Classic Battlestar in the coming weeks.

About Battlestar Galactica

Originally produced by Universal Television and Glen A. Larson,
the hit TV series, Battlestar Galactica, was first broadcast on
ABC in September 1978. Starring Lorne Green, Richard Hatch, and
Dirk Benedict, this epic space saga went on to become a veritable
sci-fi classic. With just thirty-six episodes created, Battlestar
Galactica has enjoyed syndication over the last two decades, most
recently on the SCI FI Channel.

With its compelling storyline, memorable characters and exciting
visual effects, millions of fans tuned in every week to join
Commander Adama, Apollo, Starbuck and the crew of the Galactica
on their journey through the galaxy. Hunted by the diabolical
Cylons, a mechanical race set out to destroy all humans, the crew
of the Galactica and its ragtag fleet of survivors' only hope was
to find legendary planet Earth-believed to be the home of the
missing Thirteenth Colony of Man.

Inspired by the classic series, this extraordinary story was re-
imagined by the SCI FI Channel and NBC Universal Television
Studio in December of 2003 in the form of a 4-hour miniseries
event. Capturing a new generation of fans, Battlestar Galactica
became the most-watched cable miniseries of the year and led SCI
FI to continue the saga through a one-hour weekly series.

Redefining the space opera with its gritty realism, the new
Galactica, executive produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick,
has distinguished itself by the intensity and present day
relevance of its stories and the command performances of its
ensemble cast. Now one of television's most critically-lauded
shows, Battlestar Galactica is currently in its second original
season, airing on SCI FI Channel every Friday night at 10pm
ET/PT, and has just been renewed for a third season of 28
additional original episodes.

WIZARD CANCELS WIZARDWORLD BOSTON

Coming as a somewhat expected announcement, Wizard Conventions
has officially cancelled its Boston show for 2006. The show had
already been scheduled and listed on Wizard's convention plans
for October 6th - 8th.

At the WizardWorld Boston minisite, the company's official
announcement reads:

After speaking to our exhibitors and partners, all of whom shared
our concerns about the outside costs of doing business at this
time, Wizard World Boston has been cancelled. This is an industry
decision, and we want to do what's best for the industry.

We are thankful to the 8,800 fans that attended last year's event
and hope to return to Boston in the near future. We're now
focused on making sure that our other scheduled 2006 events in
L.A., Philly, Chicago and Texas are the best Wizard World shows
ever.

At 8,800 fans, the debut show was one of Wizard's lowest attended
of 2005 - Chicago saw a reported 56,000; and Philadelphia a
reported 27,000. The company did not release figures for Dallas
2005 (which saw a reported 12,000 fans in 2004). The removal of
Boston takes Wizard back to its 2004 schedule of four shows (LA,
Philadelphia, Chicago, and Dallas). Though not an official Wizard
Conventions show, the company formed a marketing relationship
with Reed Exhibitions earlier this year, giving Wizard a
sponsorship of the upcoming New York Comic Con.

It should also be noted that the official cancellation of
WizardWorld Boston is the company's second "cancellation" of a
convention for 2006. During last years' San Diego Comic Con,
Wizard was telling retailers and potential exhibitors of a
planned Atlanta show, which was to be held at Atlanta's Cobb
Galleria on the last weekend of June, the same weekend as Heroes
Convention in Charlotte, NC, roughly 300 miles to the east.

Though Wizard denied that anything was planned and that talk of
an Atlanta show was "rumor and speculation," officials at the
Cobb confirmed for Newsarama that Wizard was slated for a show
that weekend, and the schedule of shows, which included Atlanta,
were being distributed by Wizard Conventions staffers, in an
attempt to land exhibitors.

Many creators and fans rallied to Heroes Con's side, and later,
Wizard's Gareb Shamus confirmed that there would be no Atlanta
show for the company in 2006.

Though 2006's conventions are just beginning (Wonder Con is next
weekend), at through the course of last year's season, many
observers, in speaking with Newsarama on grounds of
confidentiality, said that the overall convention schedule was
reaching a breaking point, and that something (considering the
schedule with increased fuel costs and other factors), sooner or
later would have to give, and an adjustment would be coming.

In speaking with the website www.comicbookconventions.com, Wizard
Conventions' Martha Donato said that the company has no plans at
this time to fill the vacancy on its schedule, though they are
always looking for "new cities and new opportunities for our
exhibitors."

Superboy Leaps to DVD In 2006
 January 31, 2006
According to the Superman Homepage Website the 1988-1992 Superboy
live action syndicated TV series will make its way to DVD
starting in 2006, with the first season box set most likely
debuting about the time that the Man of Steel returns to the big
screen in late June.  Superboy (along with Star Trek: The Next
Generation) was one of the first big budget syndicated TV series
and it was the first TV series filmed at the Disney/MGM Orlando
facilities.  Even though Superboy was always a Time Warner-owned
character, Viacom distributed the syndicated Superboy series,
which was produced by the Salkinds, who also produced the big
budget Superman movies starring Christopher Reeves.  Behind-the-
scenes wrangling between Time Warner and Viacom reportedly
delayed the DVD release of the series, but the rapprochement
between the media giants who are merging their WB and UPN TV
networks coincides with the settlement of their differences over
the Superboy series, which Time Warner will distribute on DVD.

Unlike Tom Welling who plays Clark Kent in the contemporary TV
series Smallville, John Haymes Newton put on the blue spandex and
red cape in Superboy and soared to the rescue on nearly every
occasion -- and unlike the seamless character continuity in
Smallville the cast in Superboy underwent drastic revisions with
only Stacy Haiduk (Lana Lang) managing to make it through the
show's four-year run.  In fact the show itself was renamed The
Adventures of Superboy in 1990.

Image Plans 'Death Dealer' Comic Debuting in Late 2006
 January 31, 2006
Image Comics has announced a six-issue mini-series based on famed
fantasy painter Frank Frazetta's series of six Death Dealer
paintings.  Image's Death Dealer comic will debut in late 2006
with Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) handling the writing chores,
Nat Jones providing the interior art and Jay Fotos doing the
coloring.  Each of the six issues in the Death Dealer series will
feature one of Frazetta's Death Dealer paintings on the cover.

Comic book industry veterans will recall the 1995-1997 Death
Dealer comic (also based on the Frazetta paintings) from Glenn
Danzig's Verotik Publishing that lasted for four issues.

Diamond Select Toys Gets X-Men 3 License For Statues & Busts
 February 01, 2006
Diamond Select Toys has announced the acquisition of a license
for busts, statues and MiniMates based on the X-Men 3 movie,
which will debut in theaters over the Memorial Day weekend.
Gentle Giant Studio will scan the actual actors from the X-Men 3
film, which should provide the most accurate likenesses possible.

The first DST X-Men 3 busts and statues should be available this
May, and Diamond Select hopes to be able to show off prototypes
at Toy Fair in New York in February.

Dabel Brothers Announce Ptolus Comic Book Series
Written By Monte Cook
 February 02, 2006
Dabel Brothers Productions has announced a six-issue Ptolus: City
by the Spire comic book series, which will be written by game
designer and novelist Monte Cook, and distributed to the direct
market by Diamond Comic Distributors starting with issue #1 in
May.  Monte Cook was a co-designer of the d20 game system and of
Dungeons & Dragons Third Edition.  He also created the combat
system for WizKids' superhero CMG HeroClix.  Cook wrote the
indispensable Dungeon Master's Guide and founded Malhavoc Press,
which has released a number of player campaigns including Arcana
Evolved.  Later this year at GenCon Indy Cook will release his
most elaborate campaign setting ever, Ptolus, which ties-in
directly to the Ptolus: City by the Spire comic (see "Ptolus: The
Most Deluxe Campaign Setting Ever').

But the Ptolus comic book series is much more than a promotional
tie-in, it's an extension of the game and each issue will feature
an exclusive item or character with full statistics and rules.
But in addition to sourcebook-like information about the main
character's "hungersword," the Ptolus mini-series is a compelling
narrative of high fantasy and low treachery set in a complex
medieval urban environment that exists on many levels from the
top of the Cathedral spire to the tombs and dungeons far below
ground.

While Monte Cook's background in fantasy gaming is well known,
the Dabel Brothers studio, which will be providing the art for
the comic series, also has some excellent fantasy credentials
having produced comic book adaptations of George R.R. Martin's
The Hedge Knight, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time: New Spring, Tad
William's The Burning Man, and Richard A. Knaak's Dragonlance:
The Legend of Huma.

ForeWord Launches Comics Supplement
Industry News, Scoop, Friday, February 03, 2006
The January/February 2006 issue of ForeWord Magazine included a
special supplemental section called Comique featuring
contributions from various comics scholars and industry
professionals -- and highlighted artwork from titles including
Top Shelf's Blankets GN!

The only review trade journal devoted exclusively to covering
books from independent houses, ForeWord dedicated a special 15-
page section of its most recent issue to the "Rise of the Graphic
Novel." Entitled "Comique" (a combination of the words "comic"
and "unique"), this informative supplement featured essays on the
coming of age of the comic book medium from industry
professionals Kuo-Yu Liang and Jackie Estrada and comics scholars
Katharine Kan and Dr. Robyn A. Hill, Ph.D.

The contents of ForeWord's special Comique section include:

. ForeWord magazine's editor-at-large Eugene G. Schwartz lays the
groundwork for the supplement in his introduction titled "Graphic
Novels Animate the Book Business."

. Estrada -- administrator of the Eisner Awards and ForeWord's
Graphic Novel Consultant -- details the history and background of
comics and manga in the essay "The Rise of the Graphic Novel."
Estrada also prepared an exhaustive list of graphic novel
evergreens, broken down by genre.

. Freelance library consultant and contributor to Voices of Youth
Advocates (VOYA) and the Diamond Bookshelf. Kan espouses on the
significance of graphic novels' role in public libraries across
the country in "Graphic Novels in Libraries are Here to Stay."

. Diamond Book Distributors' VP Kuo-Yu Liang offers advice and
dispels misconceptions in his article "How to Sell the Graphic
Novel in Your Book Store."

. An assistant professor at National University in La Jolla,
California, Dr. Hill informs readers of the educational value of
comics in "Using Comics & Graphic Novels in Schools."

As more and more attention is drawn to our favorite medium for
storytelling, it helps expand and create more opportunities for
more distinct voice s to be heard. We applaud ForeWord and it's
efforts to help spread the word.

Talent Teams Up For Comic Pedigree Book
Industry News, Scoop, Friday, February 03, 2006
The forthcoming book on pedigreed comic collections has just
expanded! The Greatest Comic Pedigree Collections Ever
Discovered, will now cover up to 80 pedigree collections, and
will include original lists of each collection, the history of
their origin, discovery and disbursement, ranking and comparative
analysis. In addition, the talent behind the book has quadrupled.

Both Matt Nelson and Stephen Ritter, were previously working on
separate books about pedigrees, met this winter and decided a
joint effort would produce a sum vastly greater than its parts.
Joining them are Mark Haspel and West Stephan of CGC. Haspel and
Stephan's involvement opens the doors to CGC's vast accumulation
of data they have amassed from grading thousands of pedigreed
books over the last six years. Having handled and graded hundreds
of copies for each pedigree, their experience will be heavily
tapped for the book. "We hope the pedigree book will be as
indispensable to the hobby as the Gerber's Photo-Journals and The
Official Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide," says Matt Nelson.
"The affects those two publications have had on comic collecting
are incalculable."

The group already has dozens of participants offering original
lists, histories, and pictures from each pedigree collection.
Stephen Ritter believes the success of the book hinges on
participation from the hobby. "This project is a community
effort. The only way to track down so many stories and collect so
much information is for everyone who was involved in these
collections to help. We are impressed with how much help we've
already received, and rest assured we'll be knocking on many more
doors until we get this project done." Thanks to an enthusiastic
response, the authors have uncovered 34 full or partial original
lists, considered the nucleus of the book. Several more are in
the process of being tracked down.

"Pedigreed collections represent the absolute best you can get as
a collector," continues Nelson. "They have redefined our grading
system and pricing structures, and yet have maintained an aura of
mystery all of these years. This book was inevitable."

In addition to the book's publication, the official website will
continue to track and expand the knowledge of pedigrees in the
coming years. Using a database, this website will catalog all
existing copies from each collection, and cover any new
collections that could surface in the future. The website will be
used throughout 2006 for updates on the publication of the
pedigree book.

For an advance preview of the book's contents, please visit
http://www.comicpedigrees.com. If you happen to be at any of the
major conventions this year, stop by Stephen Ritter's and CGC's
booths to view excerpts from the book. If anyone has any
information on pedigree collections, please contact Stephen
Ritter at sritter@woh.rr.com, or Matt Nelson at
comics@classicsincorporated.com, or Mark Haspel at
mhaspel@cgccomics.com
