He is in production of his own self-published comic book called The Legendary Dark Silhouette and has copyrighted over 600 characters for his Jazma Universe.] SPOILER WARNING: THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Name: The Wang - Who's Your Daddy? Publisher: Squid Works Comics Creator: Stan Yan Price: $9.95 Contact Information: www.squidworks.com Email: stan@squidworks.com Squidworks Comics PO Box 480463 Denver, CO 80248-0463 Comments: They say that this graphic novel is for immature adult readers. The cover shows a woman holding a baby and the daddy next to her, has his face cut out from the picture. Learn the philosophy of purchasing stock in this comical comic book graphic novel, the philosphy actually makes sense in a very comical way. This is a story about Eugene Wang and his dysfunctional relationships in his lonely life. The encounters of strange people that impact his life in some meaningless way. One guy he meets says that 'politicians are irreparably stupid. They're just saying ----- to get elected and leech off of our taxpayer dollars.....so the government is raising less money, but spending more on war..." You will learn that the war on terrorism, the war on drugs is a way to take away our civil liberties. Yes, this comic book graphic novel has some political overtones. There are other stories, Eugene gets involved in a menage de troix, well sort of. Eugene experiences Zag Zagler's Motivational Sales Tour, suggested by his boss. There is a story that deals a bit with the Dawn of the Dead, as Eugene finds himself in a horrendous auto accident, bites off his own tongue, the woman driver is beheaded, but there is a hilarious outcome to the whole story. If you felt like you have been dumped on your whole life, I suggest you read The Wang - Who's Your Daddy! After reading The Wang, I didn't know where this story was taking me, but when it was all over, I felt completely violated! The Wang is exceptionally clever, maybe too clever! Name: Savage Dragon #122 Publisher: Image Comics Price: $2.99 Written and Drawn by: Erik Larsen Contact Information: Erik@savagedragon.com Website: www.savagedragon.com Comments: First off, I found Savage Dragon #122 a very entertaining read this evening, but I must thank you for the sidebar stories such as Comic Bits by Chris Giarrusso (always good for some laughs), the extra Savage Dragon story that takes place before Savage Dragon #116. Also, I enjoyed the very cool pin-ups! Now let's talk about the story in hand. I like Mister Glum, so of course I had a smile on my face. This little dictator from Dimension X is hilarious! I like the flashback to Dread Knight's Castle stronghold with the use of those little dots to add color to the scenes and characters. A flashback using the old comic book format is a very original idea. The dramatic entrance by Super Patriot going to Bette Turlife's rescue kept me glued to the story. With a Savage Dragon story, you never know what will occur next. I thought King Kong at any point of time would confront the 100 ft tall Angel. No matter how big Angel is, she is exceptionally sad about her first kill, as Glum calls it. Glum cracks me up as he tries to make her feel good about it..hey, the guy was evil. As if this little girl can comprehend such logic. Savage Dragon had plenty on his mind, since Jennifer was unconscious and Angel was with Glum. When Savage Dragon said..."I mean, we have insurance - our house will get rebuilt and Mr. Glum is extremely devoted to Angel, I can't imagine him hurting her." What Savage Dragon should have said was, our house was destroyed, Angel is in danger and she is with Mr. Glum, but I have good news, I saved a whole lot of money on car insurance after switching to Geico! That would have brightened Jennifer's spirits, a little humor from the Savage Dragon himself. Jennifer gave Savage Dragon a good XXX chewing and blames him for not throwing Glum into the void. Ahh...another flashback using those little dots, when Dread Knight is shown, very cool! Super Patriot and Captain America are interconnected with that super soldier formula, another amazing connection that ties in the full Multiverse. Tension is brewing as the President wants the Liberty League to deal with that incredible killer robot from Iraq. Wherever Savage Dragon goes, he seems to get a lot of attention and generates a media circus. That robot has me worried, the bomb had no effect, so will Savage Dragon save the day with his collegues or will he be in dire danger? Name: B.P.R.D. #6 - The Black Flame Publisher: Dark Horse Comics Price: $2.99 Story by: Mike Mignola and John Arcudi Art by: Guy Davis Contact Information: scotta@darkhorse.com Comments: There was plenty going on is B.P.R.D. #6. With the revelation that the fog turned the entire battalion into monsters, is a scary thought in itself. Speaking of fog, a lot of mystery comes with fog, I can think of 3 things. I just watched the movie "The Fog" in which retalitating ghosts travel in the fog. Then there is the London fog that Jack the Ripper hid himself in. Last but not least is the fog that a WWI battalion walked into and disappeared forever, true story as told by Fortean Times. So I wonder if Mike Mignola or John Arcudi got that fog idea from the Fortean Times. Hmmm. The focus was locating the Geo-Mantic Epicenter...in which the definition meant that it could spell doom for one large city. This is a major event of catastrophic consequences. The words 'all life will be new again' echoed in my mind as the story continued. Before, I get back into the story, I salute Guy Davis for his amazing artwork. Every panel was eye-candy to look at. Guy Davis is quite talented. Johann Kraus seems to get things stirred up quickly as he spots a possible human figure in the center of the city. While this is all happening, is Liz Sherman about to follow the right path? Then the monsters attack and the focus again is on Liz, because she is in that deep hole. Liz comes out more than a hero, as she unleashes the power and she says..'the fire is mine'! No kidding! I don't think Roger is dead, even though it appears that he is dead. Since Roger's tissue is resistant to the hacksaw, he will somehow miraculously be back, I think Johann will make sure of that. Interesting story with many, many possibilites! Wow! Name: Rocket Science - Multi Limbed Anthology Publisher: Armchair Comics Price: f2.00 Contact Information: Gavin.C.Burrows@aexp.com Armchair Comics 8 Brewer Street Brighton BN2 3HH UK Comments: Hilarious independent comic book, one cartoon is about a philanderer, a man who loves the ladies and what is surprising he looks exactly like a very famous porn star. There are cartoons about a hacksaw (of all things), some guy choking on a fish and is trying to make a 911 call on his cell. The guy croaks, then is buried in the cemetery and the worms eat the flesh off his bones. A rodent eats one of the worms. The recycle of life, not quite sure what to make of this story. There is a video game character that shoots out spitballs or something from some tube in his mouth. Another story you get is called "A Very Small Space Epic", not your traditional Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica epic, but you get a very unique heroine named Sue Frizzle. You get two birds that insult each other in a very vulgar way. If you want a unique anthology of the bizarre, this is the comic book for you! Many various artists do the artwork and some of the artwork is very unique and interesting to look at. If people tell you that you have a strange personality, your wit is exceedly strange, you make off-the-wall remarks and comments and that you are just plain weird, I suggest that you give Rocket Science a try! MOE Sidenote: As I enter the A1 Comics Stargate, these are the realities I encountered: Chris Wisnia's Doris Danger Seeks; Warren Ellis' Blackgas #1 by Avatar; Brian Wood/Ryan Kelly - Local - Theories & Defenses #3; Nightmares & Fairytales #15 - 140 Rue Royal by SLG; Ted Naifeh's Polly and the Pirates by Oni Press and Surrogates by Top Shelf. I only made a few purchases. Here are two comic book magazines that are now on the racks and a few comments I made about both magazines: Sketch #28 Just finished reading Sketch #28 and this issue was truly a delightful read. Especially enjoyed Jason Howard's Designing a Comic Book Cover. Let me throw in my thoughts. If you have a truly wonderful cover, it will be like eye-candy to the purchaser. I can't tell you how many times I have seen some outstanding comic book covers that practically jumped off the racks and into my fat little fingers. Some of these comics with outstanding covers, have a horrible storyline, but yet the cover was so incredibly fantastic to look at, I had to purchase the comic book. If you have a eye-catcher cover, you will most likely sell a lot of comic books. If Alex Ross is doing your cover, you have an instant hit. Eye-catcher covers also work on DVDs. I can't tell you how many times I have rented a DVD that has an eye-catcher cover and learn later that the movie is horrendous. If you can catch your fans attention with a great comic book cover, you have caught the fish with your bait! Graphic Novel Scene: I really enjoyed my 'Graphic Novel Scene'. What a huge magazine! Wow! Anyway, enjoyed your article 'Graphic Novels as Collector Items". Graphic Novels are for the true comic book aficianado that is not worried if the graphic novel is going to be a collector's item. Anything that is a reprint of the original falls into the category of non-collectibles. The person that buys the graphic novel, is a true blue reader of comics. It's a passion that is unquenchable. The person that is worried about the value of a comic book is not a true blue fan of comics. It's as simple as that. Plus, a graphic novel has the whole series usually tied up in one book and the fan will use the graphic novel as his or her reference book for the series. What I love about Graphic Novels, is the fact they sit easily on your book shelf and are easy to take off the book shelf to read or show your friends. Long live the Graphic Novel! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] WHERE DOES HE GET THOSE MARVELOUS TOYS AND WHERE DOES HE KEEP THEM? In the 1949 serial BATMAN AND ROBIN, Robert Lowery filled in for screen SUPERMAN Kirk Alyn who turned the role down. His costume was rather inexpensive, and his utility belt just a plain strip of light cloth with no compartments. Yet in one chapter, he withdraws a foot long blowtorch from it. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [10] My View David LeBlanc ComicBkNet@aol.com http://members.aol.com/comicbknet David LeBlanc is the Editor of the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine; which won the prestigious Eagle Award for Favorite Comic Book Ezine in 2001. David's favorite motivational phrase is: BEHOLD THE TURTLE, HE ONLY MAKES PROGRESS WHEN HE STICKS HIS NECK OUT! NET Comics www.netcomics.com Manhwa/Graphic Novels from Korea The online presence of this company offers web versions of the comics at about 25-cents per chapter. The printed promotional material indicates they will print publish first volumes of three new titles in each month - January, February and March - with quarterly schedules on each. They promise future volumes from Japan and other countries. LAND OF SILVER RAIN vol.1 By Mira Lee B & W, tpbk, 184pp, 5x7, $9.99 This story promises to tell a love story that unfolds in two worlds - one in fantasy and one in reality. It begins in the world of ghost-like spiritual beings of Korean lore, the dokebis. They are much like us except they have horns and fang teeth. A young human of Earth was abandoned in a cabbage patch but was saved and raised by a dokebi witch. Silver Rain believes herself to be a dokebi but that is because a spell has been cast to make her look the part. She is very popular, except with Wild-Thorn her jealous rival. A prince from the Unicorn Kingdom (they only have one horn) happens upon her by accident and inadvertently plays part in he imprisonment when she is famed by Wild-Thorn. The results of her actions and the events that follow break the spell and reveal her to be human. Now she is imprisoned and the unicorn prince is sneaking off to see her. There is so much in this volume the above recap just scratches the surface. The relationship between Silver Rain and the witch is explored in detail as are the cast of characters, which is a lot larger than the few mentioned. Like many good stories there is a fair amount of character development. The creator's style is a mixture depending on the mood being set. Sometimes it is vague and ghostly, then very fine-lined realistic and next it might be cartoony in an emotional situation. There are even times when it lapses into a lot of text to explain things. It is always engaging and entertaining. The amount the main plot moves in almost 200 pages may seem too little to those used to most American comics. There are a lot of side stories and scenes to help us to get to know the people, the culture and the folklore it is derived from. The main characters are not entirely admirable; each has some quirk that makes them more real to us. It is a fine first chapter in what promises to be an interesting story. MADTOWN HOSPITAL vol.1 By JTK B & W, tpbk, 168pp, 5x7, $9.99 From sublime to ridiculous seems to be the way with these comics. MADTOWN HOSPITAL falls closer to the other category. You really can't take much of it seriously but then it is meant to be a comedy. The nature of the humor tends to be on the dark side. I would classify it as something like a mix of SCRUBS and the ADDAMS FAMILY, sort of. The action takes place in the Madtown Hospital; the name should clue you that this is not a normal place. The flower vendor outside has a crush on a female doctor who for some reason is always in need of blood for her patients, and they all have type A blood. She has a hard time finding enough until the flower guy gets treated for a cut and reveals he has that type blood. From that point on there is a running gag of her draining his blood, even while dragging him around the place. Dr. Don Juan has a near perfect record in the operating room. It seems all of his patients of late have died on the table. He goes a bit crazy and gets to see the head of Psychiatric medicine, who talks through a puppet. A male nurse is a bit gruff and can become violent. He has a running battle with the second in command of the mob to the point where he throws him in a well for safekeeping. Meanwhile the mob boss is getting a tattoo removed by Dr. Don Juan and, oh well. The lovely super-model turned nurse doesn't make it past page 12, the victim of he high-tech transportation tube they all slide through to get to the operating room. It goes on and on. The subplots are somewhat self-contained in individual chapters while some run through the whole book. There are secrets from World War two about plants that attack and a nifty parody of FANTASTIC VOYAGE wraps it up this time around. Some of it is a bit corny and most of it is hilarious. Again the art makes it happen as the emphasis is placed on the action with changing styles. There are just too many bits to catalog in a review. It is a pleasant diversion from the usual fare. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. This short film features the JLA as teenagers in an "Afterschool special" where Superman gets teenage Wonder Woman pregnant and she has an abortion.
