[COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30
years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His
website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ]

YOU'LL BELIEVE STAGEHANDS CAN FLY

In 1987, Bollywood produced their own version of SUPERMAN THE
MOVIE, fondly known as the INDIAN SUPERMAN.
http://xoomer.virgilio.it/amasoni2002/shl/dc/the_indian_superman_
(1987).htm  I've spent many happy hours laughing at this epic,
with features a dozen musical numbers and a greatly expanded
Jimmy Olsen comedy role.  One of the best parts is the adaptation
of the Margot Kidder "Read my Mind" flight over Metropolis
scene.  In the recreation, Gita and Superman sing as they fly
over the city.  One clip shows them flying over skyscrapers while
the shadows of two stagehands cross the screen a foot below them.

SOULSEARCHERS & COMPANY TPBK #2 "Frothy Favorites!"

Acclaimed as today's most consistently entertaining
humor/adventure series, Soulsearchers & Company features super-
hero epics with a saucy, sophisticated tone. The series showcases
the lives of a motley group of ghostbusters in a city that's
become synonymous with paranormal overactivity, the small
Connecticut township now nicknamed FEAR CITY. The gang includes:
Bridget, a former Olympic athlete; Baraka, a fire-demon from an
Arabic Hell; Janocz, a gypsy teen who can transform into
monstrous forms, Kelly, an apprentice witch, and Peter P.
Peterson, an accountant with a magic bag.

Soulsearchers & Company is a major ongoing comics achievement,
from the award-winning scripting talents of Peter (Young Justice,
Spyboy) David, with delightfully different artwork from Amanda
(Gatecrasher, Vampirella) Conner, Neil (Superman Adventures)
Vokes, and Jim (Spider-Man) Mooney, with additional sequence art
by John Heebink, Ricardo Villagran, and Michael Weaver.

This hugely engaging collection features issues #7-12 of the
Soulsearchers' monthly comic, including the three-part "Toadies"
saga, in which the SS group breaks up, only to find that their
separate paths each lead them into conflict with the Cult of Drek
and its leader, the Schlockmeister. "The Weirdest Link," an album
issue, recounts some of the members' early highlights, including
Baraka's ouster from Hell, and then there's the matter of the
mutated creatures living in Mystic Grove harbor, and the
spectacle of Bridget and Baraka's first real date ("A Date that
Will Live in Infamy!"). Also included are several special text
features.

See for yourself why Soulsearchers and Company was nominated as
"Best Ongoing Humor Series" by the British Comic Book
Professionals Society.

Also debuting a brand-new painted cover of Bridget and Baraka,
created by Amanda Conner on-site at the Claypool booth at 2000's
Comic Con International.

New Color Cover B&W Interior 152 pages $12.95

The early adventures of the funniest supernatural investigators
that ever existed! Discover the roots of Bridget, Baraka, Kelly,
Janocz, and Peterson in their first forays against the forces of
farcical fright! This material had initial low circulation and is
in high demand today.

Including: "Puppet Dictatorship," a cadre of killer marionettes
target kids'-show hosts; "Pastramia on Wry," introducing
Creature-Feature; "Season of Misseds," the war between the dream-
demons (Sandman parody); "Into the Woods," twisted excursions
into fairy-tales; "Spin Cycle," Soulsearchers get a make-over
into more commercial models (Image Parody).

This riotously funny collection features work from the first six
issues of Claypool's much-hailed Soulsearchers & Company comics
series, nominated by the British Comics Professionals Society as
Best Humor Comic (they read this one, too).

Stories and Art by: Peter (Hulk, Aquaman, Spider-Man 2099) David,
Amanda (Vampirella) Conner, Jim (Spider-Man) Mooney, Steve
(Hitchhiker's Guide) Leialoha, and Richard (Portia Prinz) Howell.

DEADBEATS TPBK #2: "Learning the Game!"

The Deadbeats are running wild in Fear City. They're a cruel and
crafty vampire gang, and their mission could result in utter
destruction of the entire town. Meet Dodger, Martine, Colleen,
Mickey, and their so-called leader Southie, in this repackaging
of the climax of the seminal Deadbeats epic. Discover why
Deadbeats is the vampire saga with enough murder, sin, lust, and
redemption to satisfy the most discerning reader. Deadbeats is
America's new favorite vampire epic, and this volume collects all
the vital early chapters in their story.

This thrilling and terrifying collection features work from the
seventh through twelfth issues of Claypool's much-hailed
DEADBEATS comics series in which the conclusion of the whole war
between the feuding vampire factions comes to a violent climax.
Witness: vampire hunter Dakota Kane's first mano-a-vampo against
the predators; Dr. Ralston's attempt to cure one of the Deadbeats
-- and its horrible result; King Hermano's machinations resulting
in the death of a beloved character from the book's original
cast; and Southie discovering the evil reason behind the
Deadbeats' adopting him into their ranks. All stories feature
script and art by Richard (Portia Prinz) Howell and Ricardo
(Strange Tales) Villagran. Deadbeats has been nominated by the
British Comics Professionals Society as Best Dramatic Comics
Series (and they read it).

Vampire fiction -- especially that with a strong horror or sexual
flavor -- is always popular, and Deadbeats has both of those
qualities in spades, in addition to the added allure of strong,
continuing story momentum and lush, reality-based art. Any reader
of Vamps, Vampirella, Lady Bathory, or viewer of Dark Shadows or
Forever Knight would by happy to add Deadbeats to their ongoing
list of "must-have" titles. Try it out and see!

The volume is 160 pages, at $12.95, with a new painted cover by
Ricardo Villagran, a foreword by classic DARK SHADOWS actress
Nancy Barrett (Carolyn, Millicent, Charity), and an afterword by
Richard Howell.

Five fearsome newcomers arrive in Fear City, and their first
outreach is to murder four teen-agers on the beach. They're the
Deadbeats, a cruel and crafty vampire gang, and their mission
could result in utter destruction of the entire town. Meet
Dodger, Colleen, Mickey, and their so-called leader Southie, as
they were presented for the first time. Discover why Deadbeats is

satisfy the most discerning reader. The early chapters of the
vampires' invasion are presented in their integrity. Deadbeats is
America's new favorite vampire epic, and this volume collects all
the vital early issues of the story.

This thrilling and terrifying collection features work from the

qualities in spades, in addition to the added allure of strong,

issues of Ultimate X-Men as well as the rare 1/2 issue in the
Ultimate X-Men Ultimate Collection Book 1 TPB, written by Mark
Millar (Wolverine, Ultimates 2) with an all new cover by Leinil
Francis Yu, including art by industry greats Andy and Adam Kubert
and others.

No fan of the X-Men should be without X-Men: The Dark Phoenix
Saga TPB, a new printing of the classic X-Men tale that is
arguably THE greatest X-Men story ever told.  Chris Claremont and
John Byrne solidified their marks as legends with this arc of X-
Men Vol.1 #129-137 where the X-Men have to decide what to do when
one of their own members, Jean Grey, becomes a threat powerful
enough to destroy entire galaxies.

One of the definitive X-Men creative teams of the 1990s,
Chris Claremont and Jim Lee, launched an all-new X-Men title in
1991 to enormous success.  X-Men: Mutant Genesis TPB collects the
first 7 issues of that series featuring the X-Men going toe-to-
toe with some of their greatest foes including Magneto, the
Acolytes, Sabretooth, and Omega Red.

Before she was an Avenger or a New Warrior, Firestar had
to contend with the current X-Man the White Queen back in her
villainous days.  X-Men: Firestar Digest collects Firestar #1-4
and guest-stars the New Mutants as the teenage mutant learns how
to be the hero that eventually made her one of Earth's Mightiest.
This Spring, be on the lookout for these X-Men trade
paperbacks, digests, and hardcovers collecting some of the
greatest X-Men stories of the last four decades.
