Name: Horror Stories from the Swamp #1 Publisher: Working Class Comics Price: $3.50 Creator: Cedric L. "cc" Freeman Overviewed by: Paul Dale Roberts, MOE Comments: Some working class Joe Blow is lured by a seductive woman on the Internet. The guy chats with her and plans to meet with her. When he arrives to the swamp, where he is supposed to meet her at some crossroads, 2 hillbilly guys accost him. The poor guy is a married man and both men threaten to blackmail him and tell his wife. They want money, lots of money. They release him, but they follow him wherever he goes. They follow him to work, they take pictures of him, they make phone calls and threaten his family. The more money the guy gives the hillbillies, the more money they want. At some point of time, the 2 hillbillies feel sorry for him and they plan to give him back his life and they ask to meet with him one final time. They have ribs and beer and they plan to celebrate with this wretched soul. The poor Joe Blow meets with them and has a baseball bat and catches them both by surprise. The final scene shows this poor Joe doing time in prison and facing an execution date. His life is ruined because he chased a seductive woman on the Internet. The artwork is black and white and mediocre. MOE Sidenote: This is Paul Dale Roberts aka MOE (Multiverse Observer and Explorer) speaking. I have traveled through the Multiverse and discovered many interesting realities. On this day, I will bring with me Selene, a death dealer, vampire warrior with me. You probably know her in our own reality from the movie: Underworld: Evolution. When walking through the A1 Comics Stargate, I stopped at Selene's world and asked her to tag along with me. Selene will make a few comments along the way of our journey. This is what Selene and I have discovered in this Multiverse visit: Speakeasy Comics comes out with Geowulf #6 - The Flying Friar and Helios in with the New #2; Black Harvest #3 by DDP; Grimm Fairy Tales #3 by Zenescope; Jim Valentino's Intimidators #2 by Image; The Lexian Chronicles - Full Circle #3 by www.markosia.com; The Necromancer #4 by Top Cow; Rex Libris Vol 1 #3 by SLG; When Zombies Attack! #1 by GrimmGrottoGoods; Terra Obscura and Splash Brannigan. Selene and I even went through cyberspace, to check out the comic book website www.imaginationhill.com MOE: Selene, are you having a good time, checking out these realities? Selene: I find it fascinating. I guess it's better than fighting Cluny. MOE: Who is Cluny? Selene: He's a terrible one-eyed rat that took over Redwall Abbey. MOE: The only rat I know is Master Splinter. Selene: You don't want to know this rat, believe me. Okay, what else do you have in store for us? MOE: Well, there is Hellboy #1 of 2 by Dark Horse Comics, here are my comments below: Hellboy #1 of 2 by Dark Horse Comics: This story starts off intriguing. The mention of mysterious Africa and how a city disappears and the retrieving of a mummy. Hellboy relives his one time experience in Africa. What a experience it was! Back in the day, Hellboy was an icon. He was worshipped and the way he comes out of a lake of blood and crocodiles dead everywhere, everyone knew Hellboy was someone you don't want to agitate. Hellboy aka Makoma with the iron hammer will deal terrible pain to anyone who crosses his path! Hellboy is set upon a journey, in which he encounters the old woman who wants him to bring back her bag, with his enemie's bones. What a request that is! There is a lot of complexity to Hellboy, he's more than just a demon, he has a destiny, a purpose. I love the way he dealt with the giants and finally the demon in this story. They all turn small and he throws them all in his bag. His defeat of the demon and the giants, shows that Hellboy is scared of nothing. Now if I can just pronounce Chi-Eswa-Mapiri! Hellboy #1 of 2 was one heckuva a story! Selene: Listen MOE, are you going to talk about Flare by Heroic Publishing, Inc? Not to forget Anthem also from Heroic Comics and Cadre from Nifty Comics and what the Superverse staff gave you in regard to Zoom Suit? Maybe I will tell you a story myself, when I did a mission with Damali Richards, Vampire Huntress and vampire extraordinaire Carlos Rivera. MOE. Who is Damali?? Selene: If you ever read the chronicles of L.A. Banks, you would know who I was talking about. I teamed up with Damali and Carlos and fought against some cyborg werewolves that were created by the US Government! MOE: What? I can't believe our government would do something like that! Under what administration? Selene: Eisenhower. MOE: How old are you? Selene: You should never ask a woman her age. I will tell you this story another time, why don't you go ahead and talk about Flare, Anthem and Cadre now. MOE: Okay, let me talk, ummmm...did I ever tell you I like women in black leather? Selene: You better talk or maybe I will take a bite out of your neck! MOE: Okay..okay...sorry.... In Regard to Zoom Suit by Superverse: Website: www.superverse.com I want to thank the fine folks at Superverse for sending me such a wonderful surprise! I loved the Zoom Suit #1 Film Festival Edition! I also enjoyed the Zoom Suit 3 collector cards, poster and Zoom Suit signed preview! Much appreciated. Fans, if you haven't had the chance to experience Zoom Suit, it's a charming, rollicking good adventure, see my past overview on this comic book! The letter I received from Diana Striker, Comic Book Goddess reads in part: The comic book enclosed is the Zoom Suit #1 Film Festival Edition. John had 1000 of these made, and only for friends and family. These are not for sale. They are not a 'retailer incentive' and not available through Diamond. We sent them out to family, old friends, and the new friends that we've met along the way during the Zoom Suit project. The front cover, inside cover and back cover are unique to this edition. The interior pages are identical to what you will find in Zoom Suit #1. Also included are three trading cards which depict the exact covers that will be featured on Zoom Suit #1 to give you a sneak peak at how they sparkle! Diana and John: Thank you sooooooooooooo much! What a nice surprise and I will cherish them forever!! Wow! Name: Cadre #3 October 2005 Publisher: Nifty Comics Price: $3.50 Creator: Mat Nastos Website: www.fanboy.niftycomics.com Overviewed by: Paul Dale Roberts, Publisher www.jazmaonline.com Comments: You like scary movies? Well Cadre #3 starts off like a scary movie. The scene is Bloche Institute for the Criminally Insane. For some reason, when this institute is mentioned, I get a flashback to 1978, when I applied for a prison correctional officer at Vacaville Prison and the proctor says....'only 5 cells down from where you applicants sit, is Charles Manson's cell'. This is what I think of when you say 'criminally insane'. One of the prisoners at Bloche Institute is seduced by an enticing woman. The woman releases spiders all over him and sprouts out multiple arms. The man is later found, half eaten and covered in webs. Yuck! While all this is happening, our heroes in the team called Cadre are fighting a monstrous being named Hades that dons a Trojan's outfit. Hades gives Cadre a run for their money, but they have a team member that is one heck of a fighter named White Dwarf that finally finishes Hades off. You will enjoy the training of Skyfire who harnesses the power of lightning and his twin brother Thunderbolt that harnesses the power of Thunder, well, he is the avatar of thunder. The training is superb to watch. The artwork is also superb and leaves nothing to the imagination. Cadre is a thrilling tale of danger and adventure. An edge-of-the-seat, can't-put-it-down comic book with potential for classic status! Name: Roy Thomas' Anthem #1 March 2006 Publisher: Heroic Publishing Inc. Email: anthem@heroicpub.com or licensing@heroicpub.com Website: www.heroicpub.com Price: $3.25 Creators: Roy Thomas, Daniel Acuna, Michael Kelleher and more! Overviewed by: Paul Dale Roberts, Publisher www.jazmaonline.com Comments: Dang! Roy Thomas kicks butt with Athem! Military v. superhumans! Meet: Stonewall Jackson, Dawns Earlylight, Bombburst, Liberty, Rockets Redglare and Stars & Stripes! You will also meet Agent 76, he's the one that knows all about these superhumans, he was the one that gave them their code names! A lot of things are happening, there is an alternate reality that takes place. A reality in which the Nazis won the war! Gojira (a friend of Godzilla) along with some Japanese warships wrecks havoc on San Francisco! Nazi warplanes that look like UFOs cause chaos with their heat rays on the east coast! Franklin Delano Roosevelt is dead!! Man, I couldn't get enough of this story! I love the superheroes, I love this alternate reality! Anthem is a fine work, literate, witty, filled with the excitement of genuine storytelling. Roy Thomas is extraordinary! Name: Flare #32 March 2006 Publisher: Heroic Publishing Inc. Email: anthem@heroicpub.com or licensing@heroicpub.com Website: www.heroicpub.com Price: $3.25 Creators: Wilson Hill, J. Adam Walters, Steve Perrin and more! Overviewed by: Paul Dale Roberts, Publisher www.jazmaonline.com Comments: In this issue, Flare is waiting for Helga. Bullets are fired at Flare, but of course this doesn't stop Flare at all. What is Flare doing? She is selling Helga into white slavery? Many questions are thrown out. Could Helga be Hitler's daughter? One of the best scenes is when Flare battles Helga and finally overtakes her. The artwork is in color. All Heroic comics are done in color and the artwork is majestic in every way. You also get in this comic book Jimmy Dooley, Man of Wonder. Dooley is wearing a powerful belt that everyone wants and find out what happens in this exciting intriguing story! Another side piece is called Cooky - She's a Lazy Dumb Mutt. A fun comical read. Flare #32 is provocative and enticing. From start to finish. Readers will cheer! Name: Flare #16 April 2006 - Adventures in Olympus Publisher: Heroic Publishing Inc. Email: anthem@heroicpub.com or licensing@heroicpub.com Website: www.heroicpub.com Price: $3.25 Creators: Wilson Hill, Dennis Mallonee, Mark Propst and more! Overviewed by: Paul Dale Roberts, Publisher www.jazmaonline.com Comments: You will learn in Flare #16, that effectiveness of an old spell always diminishes with time. You'll have fun with this story, especially when a heroine uses her magic in her cosmetics. Find out what happens if you use the magical cosmetics in a wrong way, it could backfire on you. Terri has her wounds healed with magic and she needs rest to make sure that the healing is finalized. Lover boy Pan makes his appearance, as he summons Teresa and even caresses her. Teresa has an identity crisis, she is Teresa the mortal, she is Flare the superheroine, she is Aurora aka Eos the goddess. She denies the goddess part and only sees herself as the mortal, which agitates Pan. There is a problem, dawn has failed to arrive and it's up to Eos to correct this problem. You get an added bonus, a Who's Who of Gods of Olympus and a write-up on each god! Flare is rich and thought provoking! Selene: Well MOE, not bad. I would have to agree on what you said about those realities/comics. MOE: Thanks Selene for agreeing and not making me into a vampire. Here is my closing line....Multiverse Observer and Explorer signing off until next time........... _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. Since 1948, he and his partner JOE KUBERT had been drawing the THREE STOOGES in comic book form for St; John, and now he was marrying MOE's daughter! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [12] My View David LeBlanc ComicBkNet@aol.com http://members.aol.com/comicbknet David LeBlanc is the Editor of the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine; which won the prestigious Eagle Award for Favorite Comic Book Ezine in 2001. David's favorite motivational phrase is: BEHOLD THE TURTLE, HE ONLY MAKES PROGRESS WHEN HE STICKS HIS NECK OUT! NET Comics www.netcomics.com Manhwa/Graphic Novels from Korea The online presence of this company offers web versions of the comics at about 25-cents per chapter. The printed promotional material indicates they will print publish first volumes of three new titles in each month - January, February and March - with quarterly schedules on each. They promise future volumes from Japan and other countries. PINE KISS vol. 1 By Eunhye Lee B & W, tpbk, 200pp, 5x7, $9.99 The setting for this story is a secondary school and it involves a new teacher, the good looking and mysterious Orion. In many ways this is a tale of typical teenagers - some with a crush on teacher, some with stronger feelings for fellow students. Much of it concerns two female students. Sebin is the daughter of a rich gang leader. She is often left alone with servants to make her own way. She is used to having things her way - she makes the chauffeur let her drive even though she is too young, she gets other students to do her cleaning chores, she has enough money to buy what she wants, and thinks money can solve all problems. Beneath she is hurting from the knowledge of where the money comes from. She falls for Orion and sets out to win him over. She has made an enemy of sorts out of another girl, Dali. Dali confronted Sebin about her arrogant ways, particularly her manipulation of other students to do her chores. She also has a revelation about Orion when she realizes she knew him long ago. She wants to put Sebin in her place and somehow make Orion realize who she is and fall for her. Orion himself is another story. We see some of his past at the beginning, the wedding of his sister has some importance. Being a first year teacher he needs to learn the ropes and fit in. The students take to him right away, and as we see some adore him. A chance incident forces him to take action against some local thugs that will set a fateful meeting into motion. Once things get rolling the story gets more interesting. There are a bunch of scenes in the first chapter that will not make sense right away but will become clear as the story unfolds. By the end of this volume there is intrigue about Orion's past, a potential gang war and that is nothing compared to the scheming of two teenage girls! The art is top notch with a good use of black and grays as needed. One keynote of quality black and white art is how well it stands alone without the dialogue. You can see the craftsmanship in every panel. I enjoyed Pine Kiss overall but parts of it bogged down in teenage silliness, which is of course a major part of its intended audience. It can be enjoyed on many levels so everyone should take a look. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics.
