[COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30
years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His
website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ]

ABOUT TIME A TOY CAN FLY

Since the 1950's, flying superhero toys have been manufactured.
The first was SUPERMAN, followed by BATMAN and CAPTAIN AMERICA
(?) in the 1960's.  SPIDER-MAN joined this elite group in the
1970's, all of these toys were gliders propelled by a slingshot
arrangement. (Except the MARVEL FLYERS, in essence foam paper
planes from 1966). But among the countless new announced tie in
items for SUPERMAN RETURNS, is a remote controlled flying
Superman figure that actually flies!

Title: The Phantom: Law of the Jungle
Story: Joe Gentile
Art: Paul Guinan
72pgs, COLOR, squarebound, $11.99
Rated PG-13
Isbn: 10 digit: 1-933076-12-7
        13 digit 978-1-933076-12-6

Moonstone's first WIDE VISION book!
Every page is a double page spread, sandwiched by prose!
Readers rejoice! This format is not a five minute read!
Every society has its laws: some written, some unwritten-for some
are forbidden to be even spoken aloud. These are the laws that
get passed on from one generation to the next. The penalty for
breaking these laws is often swift and uncompromising. Combine
the lack of this knowledge with the unhinged mind of a deadly
assassin who is calling out the PHANTOM, and you get nothing but
fire. Bang the drum for Paul Guinan's ("Chronos") painted art,
which has an eerie cinematic quality that ignites a wanton rhthym
into the night of the Bangalla jungle. You want to see the
Phantom in a different light? You want to see him the way others
see him in his world? This is your one chance.if the law allows.

AMY AND JORDAN BENDABLE FIGURE SET

On sale June 14, set of two 8" posable figures, $29.99

Legendary "neo-primitive" artist/cartoonist Mark Beyer has
influenced contemporary art and comics with his work over the
last twenty years. Gaining attention through covers and stories
in RAW magazine, he solidified his place with a long-running
weekly comic strip, "Amy & Jordan, "that appeared in alternative
newspapers nationwide.

Last year Pantheon published all of these strips in an impressive
hardcover edition.

Working directly with Mark Beyer and the sculpting talents at Yoe
Studio, Dark Horse has successfully translated these unique
characters into large 8" figures. Since Beyer's work is very "2-
D,"making the characters as figures was a challenge. Fully
painted, but also posable, these guys are like some kind of
twisted Gumby toy for today's hipsters.

Sold as a set in special packaging with Beyer's art, Amy and
Jordan are a ray of sunshine and sweetness in an ugly world.

APOCALYPSE NERD #3 (of 6)

PETER BAGGE (W/A)

On sale May 31, b&w, 32pg, $2.99

As our heroes Perry and Gordo slowly work their way back towards
"civilization," they quickly realize that in the wake of the
nuclear attack civilized society no longer exists. Entire
communities abandoned! Rednecks killing each other over the last
bottle of soda! Communes of nerds living behind barbed-wire
encampments-and worst of all, no internet! Can our heroes adapt,
or will they head back to the hills?!

Also: a "Founding Fathers Funnies" entry recounting the too-short
life of the unjustly obscure war hero and radical John Laurens.

ARCHENEMIES #2 (of 4)

DREW MELBOURNE (W), YVEL GUICHET (P), JOE RUBINSTEIN (I), RICK
HILTBRUNNER (C), and JIM KEPLINGER (L)

On sale May 3, FC, 32pg, $2.99

Vincent Darko may be a criminal genius, but he still hasn't
figured out that his slobby roommate, Ethan Baxter, is also Star
Fighter-his sworn enemy. So why has Vincent vowed that Ethan
Baxter must die? And can Ethan survive Vincent's gauntlet of
deathtraps with his secret identity intact? There's always the
chance that frustrated Vincent will slip up and spill a secret of
his own along the way! PLUS: young love, senseless violence,
casual vandalism, betrayal, fashion tips, and-before it's all
over-one dead body. You MUST read the comic that critics across
the nation are calling ArchEnemies #2.

Written by Drew Melbourne (stand-up comedian, South Bronx public
school teacher, and freelance writer), with pencils by Yvel
Guichet (Batman: Harley Quinn; X-Men Unlimited) and inks by
comic-book veteran Joe Rubenstein (Formerly Known as the Justice
League.

danger. But every high school student has issues, right? Now,
Hoichi is kicking butt and taking names, and it looks like he has
the Riofaldians on the run. He's got the girl, the guns, and his
father-a depraved, eccentric genius who commands a war room full
of voluptuous androids-on his side. What more could a hero need?
But in the shadow of a tenuous cease-fire a battle still rages,
with both sides desperate to win the support of the masses-both
Human and Riofaldian alike! With so much propagandized mud being
slung, will anyone know who the true enemies are at the end of
the day? And will anyone notice just how close the Riofaldians
are to breaking through the Kano family's defenses?
*    From Gunsmith Cats creator Kenichi Sonoda comes Cannon God
Exaxxion, a sexy sci-fi thrill ride jam-packed with action,
drama, and a healthy dose of naughtiness!

a weak-willed heir to the crown, Thoth undertakes the systematic
elimination of any who would stand in the way of the fool's
assent to the throne. Yet, there is one in the Order of Ibis who
grows suspicious of Thoth's solicitous relations with the prince
and the increasing amount of royal blood mysteriously spilt. Will
this young priest discover the truth about Thoth in time to save
the King, or will the snake-god Set sink its fangs into the last,
best hope for peace in a war-torn land?

Conan's greatest adversary matures into a mighty doer of evil in
this penultimate issue of the series chronicling Thoth's origins
for the first time!

CRIMINAL MACABRE: FEAT OF CLAY (ONE-SHOT)

STEVE NILES (W), KYLE HOTZ (A), and MICHELLE MADSEN(C)

He's ba-aaaack!

Cal McDonald-the hair-triggered, smart ass, tough guy, private
dick monster hunter comes back to Dark Horse this month, and he's
brought his strangest nemesis with him.

Horror maestro Steve Niles collaborated with fantastic artist
Kyle Hotz (Marvel's Man Thing, Dark Horse's Billy the Kid) to
bring to vivid, spooky life Cal's first-ever encounter with a
real-deal golem. From the folklore of Jewish mysticism, the
earthy homunculus is given shape and purpose by a grief-stricken
father, out to exact vengeance on the man who attacked his
daughter. In a bizarre twist of fate, the golem is loosed on the
world with no master and only one known purpose-to kill! Cal's
gotta do whatever it takes to stop this marauding hunk of clay
from a pointless killing spree or . . . or, there's gonna be a
pointless killing spree!

been chosen to become the eventual leader of the Dragons. But
someone inside the Dragons wants Freeman dead, and Tiger Orchid
should make a fine hostage to draw Freeman into the open . . .
where a monstrous killer awaits!
