ULTIMATE X-MEN #67
Reviewer: Kevin Sutton, kevinsutton@cheerful.com
Story Title: Date Night Part Two

Can an old cat learn new tricks?

Writer: Robert Kirkman
Pencils: Tom Raney
Inks: Scott Hanna
Colors: Gina Going-Raney
Letterer: VC's Randy Gentile
Assistant Editors: John Barber and Nicole Wiley Boose
Editor: Ralph Macchio
Published by: Marvel Comics

Robert Kirkman's first story; Date Night continues much in the
manner of a teen soap in this issue. I'd say, "except with more
action..." but they do have shows like that now nowadays.

The issue itself is notable in that more bombs were dropped than
in the previous issue, but there's little change in the nature of
the story. It's intriguing for an arc to be built around multiple
threads on a single night, but it's also pretty small scale and
somewhat limiting. Still, this small focus and the addition of
great pacing suggests that Kirkman's style isn't departing much
from Vaughan's early efforts, and I suppose that could turn out
to be for the best. Personally, I'm still waiting for more big
ideas and large efforts. Even Vaughan's last story was grounded
in minor events and relationships rather than indulging
overarching philosophy or global ramifications. I think this book
might need a new angle on the X-men's lives and mission like Vau-
--er, Magneto was saying in Vaughan's last issue. Hanging around
the mansion and throwing little soap opera twists into the mix
isn't going to remain interesting on its own for long. I also
think it works better when the actors are all together with their
attitudes and actions bouncing off of each other rather than
being isolated into their activity defined associations for a
particular story.

Still, Kirkman is giving it his best. Small though this story may
be, there's still plenty of surprises and Kirkman is playing
around with the intimate setting by hinting at larger more
potentially meaningful events unfolding than which X-men want to
kiss each other.

Why didn't they break the mold when they made Wolverine?

Sabretooth is old hat, but Kirkman has given him a genuine new
spin with this issue. It evens plays upon much of what was
discussed but never really revealed (to my knowledge) about Creed
and Logan's relationship in the older Marvel universe. That I
feel is a good move; but it still doesn't change the fact that
the character is overdone and his act simply too reminiscent of
Wolverine --but evil. The latter (of course) being the idea
behind the character, but he's still an overdone version of a
heavily utilized character archetype. Consequently there's
something about this character that really makes me want him not
just beat up, but just gone; and he was for quite some time, so I
was happy. Perhaps intentionally, Storm seems to vocalize similar
annoyance. Frankly, I was really rooting for the milkshake idea.
I wonder if Kirkman was making a pass at the fourth wall like
Vaughan often does. It likewise bothers me that Creed benefits
from the old 'kewl' character physics, which he utilizes to
harness incredible speed, so he can subdue aware and trained
opponents with greater powers to use as human shields. I guess he
is up to his old tricks after all.

'No time to move out of the the way...or speak... at...
normal...rate...'

The dialogue needed some work. There were far too many moments
where it seemed like the characters were trying to play to the
audience. At the very least, I don't think the characters'
intentions are matching up with their behaviour.

Creed comes off like a kid with a secret who wants to drag out
the dramatic moment as long as possible. His big reveal was
handled in dialogue and art as a serious moment, but it's
undermined by the his many teases of that reveal. "I came to
talk...I remember things...now I know why..," do you reaaalllly
want to know? Similarly, Lilandra doesn't cut a very religious or
professional figure for someone of her position and her
intentions. She's being entirely too juvenile in her mannerisms.

They're not the only ones with dialogue difficulties. Storm feels
the need to tell us that she can't get a clear shot, (Although
she did actually have at least one, but she waits while they
talk, until they rush back into each other, then takes action for
some inexplicable reason and screws it up --good job) police
officers have to make dramatic declarations to hysterical people,
(in bold!) and Colossus speechifies. (Making his flirtatious
behaviour in this issue and the previous one seem bizarre and
counterproductive to his efforts)

'Strike a Pose. Vogue.'

Raney's artwork possesses a good level of detail and an ability
to properly showcase emotional responses, however he seems to
have trouble keeping anatomy consistent and realistic; or at
least at avoiding having his characters striking odd poses.
Whether it be Fury's odd gun handling, Lilandra's inability to
sit still, or Colossus' twisted torso; the characters are quite
distracting for the wrong reasons. The occasional weaknesses in
the fundamentals of angles, anatomy, and stranges poses makes for
artwork that is just about as awkward as the teens on the WB. The
inking and colouring of this comic is generally unremarkable;
it's not doing particularly well at hiding the deficiencies in
the pencilling or making up for them, but there's not much to
work with in this script in terms of atmosphere of effects anyway
I suppose. Credit does have to go out to whomever designed the
Nike advertisement, as they successfully fooled me into thinking
it was a part of the story with a strange and striking design.
Overall the artwork has it's advantages, but the pencils'
weaknesses are far too obvious for my tastes.

The story is certainly salvageable and has some great potential;
Kirkman is trying to tread, (or perhaps simply till) some new
ground with his plot developements in content if not style. But
the mechanics of the story and artwork are unsettling in their
weaknesses. Unfortunately, that kept me from really enjoying this
issue.

MAYBE THE SUIT DIDN'T FIT RIGHT

William Dozier had hit gold with his 1966 BATMAN series and
thought a funnier live action WONDER WOMAN pilot would fly.  He
cast newcomer ELLIE WOOD WALKER as the Amazon Princess, in this
outright comedy film scripted by MAD writers.  In interviews
since then, Dozier has said that Walker "disappeared" after the
pilot didn't sell.  But she is credited as having a small part in
the Boris Karloff film TARGETS in 1968.

reviews!

Title: Lost Squad # 2
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Chris Kirby
Penciler: Alan Robinson
Inker: Jaime Castro
Price: $ 2.95 US
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Comments: The Lost Squad get their next mission to steal or
destroy a crystal ball on a Ghost Train. They do get the weird
missions.
With a stuck door in an aircraft going down they have a scary
way of solving the problem. A very unique way.
As you follow these soldiers on their mission you see little
glimpes as to why these guys are far from normal. The whole story
and art have a strange feeling as you go through the comic as if
you have stepped into another world. One where anything could
happen and probably will.
The characters are a diverse group. From an irish lad, to a
ghost seeing Sarge, to a mathematics wiz. And the Major who is
older than he looks and there is some hidden meaning in that
statement. How old is he really?
They are an electic group that work well together. The art in
black and white does show off the action nicely and it gives the
comic the right atmospheric effect.

Title: DragonLance: Chronicles # 5
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Andrew Dabb
Penciler: Steve Kurth
Price: $ 2.95 US
Rating: 1 out of 5 stars
Comments: The companions have retrieved the Disks of Mishakal.
The art is way to vague. The characters seem lifeless in the
drawings. Even the story which has some action and excitement
seems to have a lot of little stories within it; the underground
scene, the bar scene and the capture scene. They don't really
flow into one another.
Raistlin the magic guy is slightly interesting but we never
really get into his character or any of the companions. Something
of their pasts should be revealed. We need to know more about
them to care what happens to them.
The Draconians I'm not sure what they look like. Their skin is
lizard like and they have horns. Now what you can see of them
looks good but most of them is in shadow.

Title: Snake Eyes: Declassified # 5
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Brandon Jerwa
Penciler: Emiliano Santalucia
Price: $ 2.95 US
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Comments: Zartan posed in a tree with a hunting bow provides an
amazing drawing. The art throughout is well done and realistic.
The colors are beautiful.
Snake Eyes decides to get away from it all. To run and hide.
Until a few good friends help him to see that is not the way.
Snake Eyes seems to think its his fault that people have died
around him. Its not. He is basicly a good man that just wants to
do the right thing.
The wilderness scenes of Snake Eyes in the wild alone are worth
getting this comic for.
Unfortunately the story moves really slow at the start. It
picks up some later.
Having Snake Eyes back in the game is great to see. Its a quiet
return that is sure to heat up.

Title: G.I.Joe: America's Elite! # 5
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Joe Casey
Penciler: Nelson Blake II
Inker: John Lowe
Price: $ 4.50 US
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Comments: This issue starts off with a look at a few of the Joes
and how they are handling the death of Lady Jaye. Flint does seem
out of sorts without her.
Scarlet looks amazing. Even in captivity she is gorgeous. The
drawing of her face is stunning. The defiance leaps out at you.
The Joes under the new leadership seem unsure. The new
commander also sems unsure how to gain their respect.
The second story "The Past Comes Back" is written by Josh
Blaylock with art by Stanley Lau. We see some nice hand to hand
action here. Storm Shadow and Stalker facing off with Zandar
shows us just how tough they all are.
The Dreadnoks are a mean looking biker gang. Zartan their
leader and his family are a weird looking group. They should
prove a challenge for the Joes.

Title: G.I.Joe: America's Elite! # 6
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Joe Casey
Artist: Stephano Caselli
Price: $ 4.50 US
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Comments: General Colton shows some leadership and loyalty to the
men under his command. He suggests an unsanctioned rescue of the
captive Scarlet. The Joes take care of their own.
The underwater ship looks great its a nice smooth ride.
Shipwreck makes a perfect pilot for it. Shipwreck seems to hang
in the background. When he is used he is outstanding.
Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow's training match illustrates two
skilled warriors.
The second story "The Past Comes Back" part two is written by
Josh Blaylock with art by Stanley Lau and Ray Toh. The Joes are
drawn and colored with a realistic look.
Zartan comes across as a thug. But he knows how to use
phsychological warfare against an opponent. Gung Ho is a likable
character. Storm Shadow is shown as a warrior who is loyal first
and formost to his friends.
Zartan is a nut case. His powers make it so he does not know
who he really is. Being able to impersonate others can have its
disadvantages. This comic gives you some great insights into its
characters.

Title: Zoom Suit # 1 (Film Festival Edition)
Publisher: Assassination Entertainment
Writer: John Taddeo
Penciler: Billy Dallas Patton
Inker: Kris Justice
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Comments: The cover by Billy Tucci is a fun sexy masterpiece.
Than with the metalic look added it just stands out as stunning.
The Zoom Suit logo is a spectacular design. The cover also has
three other versions by Billy Dallas Patton, Bob Layton and Bart
Sears.
The first thing that catches your eye as you open this book is
the attention to detail. Than you get a familiar feeling as an
old couple see a space ship crash. Than its no longer familiar.
Jump 60 years into the future. The double page spread using
vehicles to show the passage of time is a spectacular sight.
  The X-Files reference is cute.
Talk about action as Simon Bane free falls. This guy knows what
he wants and takes it. To bad he never checked the suits size.
As Myles finds the suit and puts it on his words are "This Is
Awesome!" and he couldn't be more right. The suit is a
technological wonder to behold. The reflective and holographic
properties of the coloring make this suit a thing of beauty.
As Myles takes the suit to go trick or treating he finds out
its not just a costume. The Zoom Suit does go Zoom!
Myles is just like any 13 year old boy as he shows off his cool
suit to his friend Brittany. She looks really cool and sexy in
her Halloween costume as a super hero.
Now the artist actually makes a mistake and changes Brittany's
clothes from one panel to the next for no reason. The Editor's
note on the page explains the arist worked 40 hours straight and
just forgot Brittany was in costume. The "Oops!" wording makes it
a very humorous mistake. Brittany is so cute.
Myles is thrust by Brittany into the role of hero. He is unsure
but he comes through with flying colors. Its amazing what a kiss
from a cute girl will make you do.
The Zoom Suit does have an alien look to it. It also exudes a
feeling of power.
OF course Myles has to be home in time or his Mom will be real
upset. Being a super hero can be hard when you have a curfew.
Zoom Suit is fun, action packed and it has tons of funny
references to DC and Marvel heroes. If you buy only one comic
ever make sure this is it!

Title: Green Lantern Corps: Recharge # 4
Publisher: DC
Writer: Dave Gibbons & Geoff Johns
Penciler: Patrick Gleason
Inkers: Prentis Rollins & Christian Alamy
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.00 Can
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
Comments: The art is really dark, with way to many shadows. The
people are drawn really simple.
The story starts out slow as in standing still slow. Than we
hit some action with fading power rings. Its not that exciting.
Having a couple of the new recruits show up adds a bit of
excitement. Sometimes the GL's work together even though they
don't like each other. You can see their respect for each other
growing.
The Spider Guild launch an all out attack on Oa!

Title: Legion of Super-Heroes # 13
Publisher: DC
Writer: Mark Waid
Penciler: Barry Kitson
Inker: Mick Gray
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.00 Can
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Comments: Watching the Legionaires in battle you get to see
different ones using their abilities to there fullest. The Legion
is drawn heroic and also with their humanity showing. They are
just teens doing what they believe in. They are well organized
and know just what to do. Watching them use their powers is
entertaining. Brainiac 5 is cocky. The story is well written with
great art to produce a quality comic.
The back up story "The Hours" is written by Stuart Moore with
pencils by Ken Lashley and inked by Paul Neary. It shows Dream
Girl but in reverse. Exactly why it is going in reverse I'm not
sure.
The letter pages are funny. Karate Kid makes a fantastic host.
He is written with a mild sense of humor. Of course he is drawn
wonderfully. Mark Waid shows us here that he has a funny side.
Conner the artist does a great job. Polar Boy is cute holding a
popcicle. It is great the way Karate Kid actually seems to be
talking to you the reader.

Title: Batgirl # 72
Publisher: DC
Writer: Andersen Gabrych
Penciler: Gabrych De La Fuente
Inkers: Jesse Delperdand & Rodney Ramos
Price: $ 2.50 US, $ 3.50 Can
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Comments: The art is done in nice dark subdued tones. Mad Dog
fights as a mad dog and Batgirl moves with skill and grace. These
two really go at it. They trade blow for blow.
Is this really the end of Batgirl? One of the most consistently
best comics for both story and art that DC makes is ending?
Her last fight with her brother Mad Dog was a bloody mess. His
wild fighting style was what was needed to get through Batgirl's
defences. As she passes over she is in her mother's arms and
Stephanie is there to meet her, her dead friend. Batgirl leaves
this world the way she started in it in violence. Now at last she
can rest in peace.

Title: Mister Miracle # 3
Publisher: DC
Writer: Grant Morrison
Artist: Freddie E. Williams II
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.0 Can
Rating: 1 out of 5 stars
Comments: Shilo, Mister Miracle seems to be stressing. His
friends are being seduced by the Dark Side. Baron Bedlam is
trying to replace him as the greatest Escape Artist. Lashina is
drawn rather cute and kinky in her tight black leather. The
little doll she carries of ZZ Mister Miracle's friend in a noose
is weird.
Dark Side in this comic is a common thug surrounded by lesser
thugs. If you are familiar with Jack Kirby's New Gods you will be
appalled by the way they are shown and treated here. These Gods
are a big disappointment. Dark Side one of the most feared
villians n the DC is just some big muscled guy.
What Dark Side and his goons do to Shilo is just sick. If you
expect to see any sign of Jack Kirby here forget it. Its a crime
to even associate what Jack Kirby created with this comic.
If you want to throw your money away than buy this comic.

Title: Green Lantern # 7
Publisher: DC
Writer: Geoff Johns
Penciler: Carlos Pacheco
Inker: Jesus Merino
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.00 Can
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Comments: Green Arrow and Green Lantern it is great seeing these
two together. These emerald heroes work so smoothly as a team.
The art showing them off is gorgeous. The art is a treat for the
eyes. The body musculature is well shown.
Mongul's son is just like his father. He brings the parasitic
plants Black Mercy with him to. They drain your life force as
they grant you dreams of a perfect life.
Mongul's son is as tough as his dad. He is not ready for the
improved Hal. Is Hal ready for him?
You will feel right at home. Like your sitting down with a few
good friends. Hal and Ollie just work so well together. They make
you feel safe. And seeing them in action is awe inspiring.

SPOILER WARNING:
THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS
OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Name: Chris Wisnia's Doris Danger Seeks Where Giant Monsters
Creep and Stomp #1
Publisher: Salt Peter Press
Price: $9.95
Creator, Writer, Artist, Letterer & Editor: Chris Wisnia
Comments:  Huge comic book that sports pin-ups by comic book
legends: Mike Mignola, Sam Kieth, Los Bros Hernandez, Tony
Millionaire, Mike Allred, John Severin, Gene Colan and more!   5
of the Doris Danger adventures are inked by Dick Ayers.  11 brand
new Doris Danger pages full of action and suspense!  I highly
enjoyed this big comic book with a 'gallery of splash page
favorites' such as Pwapwapwah - the Fiend Who Reaches Into the
Sky!  You get an article, that details the birth of WP Comics.
If you remember Tabloia Weekly Magazine, then you will remember
some of these featured stories.  The stories and artwork are in
the tradition of Jack Kirby!  All Jack Kirby aficianados should
pick up this comic book and sit back and enjoy the incredible
monstrous artwork!  Tantalizing stories feature Doris Danger
going to the Cayman Islands, that have volcanoes emanating
gasagina radiation.  Doris Danger is a photo journalist and when
she adventures to the Cayman Islands, the natives say...'white
men angered the volcano god'.  All hell breaks loose, as Splazoo
makes his frightening appearance!  Splazoo has a way of words, as
he says...'puny punks!'   Other stories feature terror that lurks
in the heart of Africa.  You'll meet the M.L.A. The Monster
Liberation Army.  You might even see some cigar shaped UFOs!
Don't forget Fuggabluh at the Eiffel Tower!  But, if you do
forget, you won't forget the gowns of the Koombiyah Monks and
more monsters, and more monsters and did I say more monsters??
Battle royal between Plopsplu v. The Honking Thing!  With all of
the battles against these monsters, you might start feeling sorry
for them.  If that happens, then you should join the P.E.T.M.
(People for the Ethical Treatment of Monsters).  Maybe Krakapoo
isn't a true monster, maybe the U.S. Government is the only true
giant monster...this is analyzed in one of the stories.
Ahhh...another article on Doris Danger Comics appearances, how
Doris evolved and the future of her story.  Doris Danger has got
to be related to Mike Danger (Mike Hammer's futuristic detective
friend).  This is something I theorized.  In this comic book you
get Buddhist headhunters and even more gigantic monsters like
Aahblaah!   Chris Wisnia has brought fun back into comic books!
Doris Danger Seeks Where Giant Monsters Creep and Stomp #1 is a
vivid world of adventure, fantasy, drama and incredibly big
monsters!  Outstanding excitement!   Doris Danger would make
Godzilla blush with envy!

Name: Scar Comics Presents Dead Dawn Quarterly Number One
Publisher: Scar Comics
Creators:  Numerous
Price: $10.99
Comments:  Eleven tales of terror from the masters of
contemporary horror!  This anthology is a horrific scary read.
Turn on the lights, because you will get a scary missing twin.
You will see a character named Jean-Fran open up Room 26 and
find blood all over the furniture, carpet and bed!  You will
learn about 'bad places' as this innocent girl is taken to a bad
place and asks the question...'why are we here?'.  Ummm...I think
you will soon find out hon.  Go into a black swamp and encounter
more than pesky skeeters!  I always wondered why no one has seen
or encountered any ghosts in cyberspace?  You know turn on the
computer and find a ghost haunting your computer.  But, in this
comic book, you have something close to it.  How about a ghost in
a mirror?  Maybe a whole ghostly world in a mirror.  A doorway
into the netherworld.  When a guy looks in a mirror, he notices
his reflection is off a fraction of a second...okay...I'm scared!
Another story, you encounter the Health & Beauty Zone that
caters to: the killer from the Scream movie, Jason Voorhees,
Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, the clown from the Stephen King
novel/movie "It" and a few of George Romero's zombies!  Maybe we
can get the Werewolf Waxing Salon ready for Lon Chaney aka the
Wolfman!  In this Health & Beauty Zone you will also find Johnny
from the movie "The Shining", the alien from the movie "Alien"
and last, but not least Frankenstein!  A horrifically good
crossover story!  If you love wars, you'll love the story "Fright
Knight".  Some of the artwork in this comic book is gothic in
taste, some is shadowy, some is incredibly detailed.  Remember
the movie "Office Space"?  How about a office that is a nightmare
of sorts, with people with staples in their eyelids?  In the
story Nine to Five, you get a hanging, office stabbing and of
course some office zombies!  Two other stories deal with military
horror and even drifting cassette tape horror!  Imagine that!
Pack "Dead Dawn" in your backpack and go camping, there are
stories in this comic book to scare your friends with!

Name: Mayhem and Chocolate #1
Publisher: Tax Collector Comics
Written by: Jude Estrada aka Molokai Princess
Drawn by: Tiffany Galusha aka Vermont Duchess
Price: $3.00
Comments:  Mayhem is an ex-con.  Mayhem is former Air Force
Special Operations demolition expert and body builder.  He is
also an ex-con that served time for robbing banks, by blowing up
the safes.  Chocolate is an African American woman that is a
former dance stripper and hooker.  She is also a master of 6
martial arts, with a black belt in all of them.    When both are
released from prison, they meet at a bar and start their own
private investigation agency called Lucrative Results.  Mayhem
and Chocolate do so well in their business, that the DEA (Drug
Enforcement Agency) hire them to go after major drug traffickers.
One of their cases takes them to Brazil to deal with a drug
cartel.  If they can survive this investigation, they will
receive 1/2 of the money profits that the drug cartel has made.
We are talking millions of dollars.  Chocolate uses razors and
knifes as her weapons of choice and Mayhem uses his fists,
claymore mines, rocket launchers, machine guns and pistols as his
weapons of choice.  Mayhem and Chocolate do a "Rambo" in this
drug cartel hideout and leave a large body count.  Chocolate is
very seductive and very sexy and when they first enter this drug
cartel hideout, Chocolate seduces the ring leader and feeds him
poisonous chocolate cherries.  With the drug cartel leaderless,
that is when Mayhem makes his move.  When they destroy the drug
cartel, they take their share of the money and let DEA do the
rest.   Both head off to Tahiti to relax, but this time Israel's
Mossad follows them to Tahiti, they also have an assignment for
Mayhem and Chocolate. They want them to hunt down a former WWII
Nazi torturer known as "The Slicer  of Mannheim!"  Not bad for an
independent comic book.  The artwork is somewhat mediocre, black
and white, but the story has potential!
