On Saturday I attended a wedding reception for a good friend who had people there from New Jersey, Ohio and Florida. It was in a very nice hotel in Cambridge, the town across the river which also boasts Harvard and MIT. It began at four and the conversation at one point was about the weather and how these out of state guests had already been told that their flights the next day had been cancelled. It was not going to start snowing until after midnight. And it did. The next day I woke to a white outdoors and the snow stopped around 4:00 after dumping 17 inches or so in my town, 60 miles west of Boston. Sure enough, nothing was going in or out of Logan airport that day until some major work was done and most people had to rebook for Monday or even Tuesday. Which brings me to this little blurb on the not-to-be-missed web site http://www.pvponline.com/ If you are not reading the daily strip, PVP ONLINE, you are missing some great fun. Here is what artist Scott Kurtz was up to that weekend. [quote] Impromptu Guest Strips Posted on Saturday, February 11, 2006 Hey guys and gals. I thought I would explain why the sudden and unanncounced guest strips. It was kind of a last minute thing. I am in Boston right now. It was just supposed to be a quick trip over the weekend and I was going to come home on Sunday. But once we got here, we learned that coming home on Sunday might not be so easy. There's a huge winter storm coming and 14 inches of snow is about to fall on the city we're scheduled to fly out of tomorrow afternoon. So it looks like what was going to be a quick short trip might be extended a day or two. So I got some friends to help me out. Thanks to Kris and Aaron for coming through at the last minute. P.S. Angela went to the North End today to get us some Italian food for lunch and check out the famous Mike's Bakery. She saw Danny Aiello filming a movie on the streets of Boston. Pretty cool. I'll try to take a picture of the snow. [end quote] Wish I knew he was in town. I would have snuck him into the party! Lets forget about last weekend and look ahead - to the new comics waiting for me at the store tomorrow. BOOM! STUDIOS Planetary Brigade #1, $2.99 DC COMICS Firestorm #22, $2.50 JSA Classified #9, $2.50 Justice #4 (Of 12), $3.50 <-------------Pick of the week! Testament #3, $2.99 MARVEL COMICS Runaways #13, $2.99 Ultimate Fantastic Four #27, $2.50 adult products ICARUS PUBLISHING A G Super Erotic Anthology #28 (adult), $4.99 So after digging out the family howmestead on Sunday I left the next morning for New York City, where they got even more snow from the storm. NYC got a record 26.9 inches, most ever on one day. It warmed up though so lots of slush everywhere as well as parked cars plowed in up to the windows on all the side streets. They have these neat machines though that I learned about this summer. They look like a dump truck from the back but they have huge heater inside. The front end loaders fill the back with snow and the heater melts it all while the water drains into the sewer system. Much more efficient than trucking it all to the river and dumping it. Eastern Standard Time From: JazmaPika@cs.com To: ComicBknet Comic books, cartoons can be powerful. Words are powerful. Drawings are powerful. Why? Look at the hoopla that one Danish political cartoon has caused among the Muslim population. To the Muslims, this was a powerful message. A message that dishonors their beloved Prophet Muhammad. It stirs up dissent, hatred, violence, murder and mayhem. Comic books can be just as powerful. Like their counterpart the cartoon, the comic book is made up of words and drawings. We saw the power of the comic book series by DC on the Death of Superman. Comic book fans all know that comic book characters never die, they merely go to limbo and at some point of time, they can return. People who were familiar with Superman became interested in the Death of Superman series. Everyone knows who Superman is. Baby boomers remember George Reeves who played Superman on TV. Not to mention the Superman movies and the many Superman based TV series that were spawned by Hollywood. If you weren't a collector, you found yourself in a comic book shop. This is utilizing the power of writing and drawing. Non collectors were attracted to the idea that a great icon was being killed off. Superman is a symbol of America and the power was that a piece of America was being killed and like a magnet, this idea attracted many. Comic books and cartoons can be fun, but they can also be dangerous too, especially when the message is hate. The Danish cartoons and caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad is not the way to use the power of writing and art. Violence to retaliate against those cartoons is wrong also. Two wrongs do not make it right. Sincerely yours, Paul Dale Roberts, Publisher www.jazmaonline.com 5606 Moonlight Way Elk Grove, CA 95758 JazmaPika@cs.com (916) 203-7503 +++++ From: "Ken Gale" <nuffsaid@riseup.net> Subject: Tonight, it's a Small Press Party on the radio Date: Tue, 14 Feb 2006 09:16:11 -0500 Please Post and Forward to appropriate chat rooms, web pages and e-lists! 1. Next show: Tonight, Tuesday Feb. 14 (aka Wednesday morning Feb. 15). Special guest stars plus writers and artists from several different small press companies: Sam Vera and Jonathan Syphax of Crazee Comics, Rachel Kadushin of Best Friends Productions and Mercy Van Vlack of Evolution Comics. We'll be discussing writing, drawing, editing, production, publishing, distribution and our inspirations. When this many creative people get together, there is inevitably a party atmosphere. There will also be surprise guests throughout the show. Plus, our guests' comics, and more, will be available to WBAI members as a premium. WBAI's Membership Drive will be on and I urge every 'Nuff Said! listener to become a member of the station. This is one of the few times getting comics is tax deductible! 'Nuff Said! needs to make a financial impression on station management! Any comic book store that becomes a member of the station will get their business mentioned on the one and only comic book-oriented radio show in New York City. Another substitution for Susan Brown's "Punk and Hardcore." 2. The last episode of 'Nuff Said!, with Seth Tobocman of World War 3 Illustrated, is currently in the WBAI archives. http://www.archive.wbai.org. Go to Feb. 1, 3:30 AM. We talked about art as communication, political cartoons of the '30s, impressionism, 9-11, 3. The show of Julie Schwartz's last interview will probably never end up on the WBAI archives. Not my doing, of course. Some sort of error with the system. Julie, of course, is the legendary creator of the fanzine, of the silver age of comics and one of the most respected editors in the history of comic books. 4. A free sample of the 'Nuff Said! dvd (the face for radio is on video!) is posted on the web site in several formats so you can see it whether you have dial-up, a mac or a pc. It has a little of each artist interview (Mike Kaluta, Mike Oeming, Sean Chen & Louis Small, Jr.). http://www.comicbookradioshow.com/dvd1samples.html 5. Also on the 'Nuff Said! web site are the radio interviews I did with Will Eisner, Scott Roberts, Faith Hubley plus a link to David Bernstein. Go to http://www.comicbookradioshow.com/ra1.html. You can also find links to the WBAI Archived versions of 'Nuff Said! Some of them are expired, some are not. 6. The WBAI signal (99.5 FM) gets out to New Haven, CT; East Hampton, L.I.; the Pocono's of PA; Trenton and Princeton, NJ and Putnam County, NY. There is a live stream, also, and the connection is easy, even with a dial-up modem (it's what I use). Just go to the web site below. Please spread the word! Thanks! His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT EARTH THIS HAPPENED ON It was definitely one of the more unusual crossovers on television. In January 1966, the NBC sitcom PLEASE DON'T EAT THE DAISIES featured an episode called SAY UNCLE. Star PAT CROWLEY (as Mom Joan Nash) takes her kids downtown, where they get the idea their parents are spies. ROBERT VAUGHN and DAVID MCCALLUM played UNCLE agents NAPOLEON SOLO and ILLYA KURIYAKIN in this unusual guest shot. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [4] Network Buzz News, gossip and rumors from the industry Bristol International Comic Expo 2006 - February Update For the eighth successive year, the Bristol International Comic Expo (www.comicexpo.net) is back in 2006, on May 13 and 14 at the British Empire & Commonwealth Exhibition Hall coupled with talks at the Ramada Plaza Hotel. For this second update, a few more details on newly added guests and events. We're very pleased that Markosia have signed up as the sponsors of the Expo, their impact on the UK comics scene in such a short space of time has been substantial; they've proven themselves a go-ahead publisher with an impressive slate of talent and books on-board. New Events And Signings: The Expo is proud to announce that Walt and Louise Simonson will be in attendance, signing and talking throughout both days - a rare opportunity for UK fans to meet the man responsible for arguably the single best run of Thor in its history. === "Hypotheticals - More fun than you should be allowed to have at a convention" - Mike Carlin === The Expo will also be hosting the first UK Exhibition from The Don Lawrence Collection with Rob van Bavel, featuring original Lawrence art and much more related to the much missed great comics talent. A first for Expos in the UK is the addition of The Doctor Who Experience, with very special guests Colin Baker (do we really need to note he's the Sixth Doctor?) and Sophie Aldred (ditto Ace), additonally featuring Terry Molloy (Davros), Paul Cornell (Who writer), Mike Collins (Who artist), Damaris Hayman (the Daemons, her first con appearance), Dee Sadler (The Greatest Show in the Galaxy) and Alan Ruscoe (Slitheen from Aliens of London/World War Three)...with more to come (including a certain infamous pepperpot). Rebellion are bringing the best of 2000AD writers, artists and editors to the Expo once again: signings, sketchings, secrets about the upcoming storylines, original art, portfolio reviews and more creators than you can shake a Law Stick at. Markosia will bring along three Expo Exclusive books, a wide range of creative talent, plus potentially one of the UK's top authors - confirmation of the name in the March update. Free packs of Markosia comics will be given to every attendee at the Markosia panel talk, as well as free comics to all attendees at a certain rather well known UK awards ceremony on Saturday night. You don't want to miss this." - Antony Johnston === Paul Rainey (The Book of Lists) (www.bookoflists.co.uk) will be bringing along the first copies of issue five of his "long comic", the highly-rated There's No Time Like The Present, along with the first four issues available at a special con price for people to complete the set.
