Marvel's Ares #1 Sells Out, Enjoying Ungodly Success

Comic fans and retailers have been pleasantly surprised
with Ares #1 as the sales and overwhelming positive critical
reviews have made the series a certifiable hit.  The
reinvigoration of the God of War by the creative team of Michael
Avon Oeming and  Travel Foreman has even led to some speculation
of Ares making an impact across Marvel Universe after the mini-
series concludes, with the hint that he'll be joining a major
superhero team by year's end.

Oeming's unique and compelling take on the black sheep of
the Gods as well as Foreman's detailed and gritty art has led to
a mountain of stellar reviews as high as Mount Olympus.

Hilary Goldstein of IGN.com calls Ares #1 a "Must
have.Oeming has handled Gods just fine in the past, but he's
never made one feel quite as human and relatable as Ares in this
debut issue."

Fanboyreview.com says, "[Oeming] takes a character that you
have absolutely no reason to care about, and not only makes him
sympathetic, he makes him engaging.  This book gives you a lot of
story and art for your money, so do yourself a favor and check it
out."

Don MacPherson of TheFourthRail.com says artist Travel
Foreman "captures an impossible world of myth in impressive
detail."

The personal drama (Ares's human son has been kidnapped by
his father Zeus in order to blackmail him into defending Olympus)
as well as the gore (Ares is the God of War, after all) is
guaranteed to increase with each issue.

Be sure to pick up issue Ares #3 as Ares must decide
whether or not to assist his fellow Gods.  And what effect will
the arrival of his eternal nemesis Hercules have on an already
seething Ares?

Note there may be copies of issue #1 still available at the
retail level. Retailers are advised to check their orders on
issue #3.

David Finch is taking the time to tackle your Friendly
Neighborhood Spider-Man in the pages of Spider-Man Unlimited #14,

only features Web-head teaming up once again with the Black Cat
but Spider-Man takes on his long-time nemesis.Dr. Doom?!

Writer C.B. Cebulski could not be happier to work with
David Finch, and on Spider-Man of all characters.

"When Marvel read my Spider-Man Unlimited script, someone
mentioned it would be the perfect story for Finch to tackle,"
says Cebulski.  "The stars must have been in alignment as it just
so happened David had a hole in his schedule between New Avengers
and Moon Knight that needed filling, and I'm honored he accepted
the assignment.  As you can tell from the pencils, I believe he
had a blast drawing it!"

blast Finch and Cebulski had at teaming up Spider-Man and the

WONDER CON DCU: MORRISON ON BATMAN

The biggest news from the DCU panel today at Wonder Con is that
Grant Morrison is taking over the writing on Batman after the
James Robinson story ends.

Bob Wayne, Dan DiDio, Howard Chaykin, Geoff Johns, Mark Waid,
Greg Rucka, Grant Morrison, Paul Dini, Stuart Moore, and Steve
Wacker were on the panel today.

The Panel began with a teaser trailer for Superman Returns and a
plug for the panel which will be held later in the day. The
audience was really excited about getting a chance to see the
clip and responded enthusiastically to the snippet.

One of the first things talked about was the upcoming Brad
Meltzer run of Justice League of America. The panelists confirmed
it will launch with a zero issue in July, with a special guest
artist they wouldn't name yet. Then issue one will be out in
August with Meltzer and series artist Ed Benes.

Greg Rucka described his upcoming Checkmate series as "Realistic
Tom Clancy-esque story, mapping out real world problems." He said
the members of Checkmate upper encheleon will be: "Amanda Waller
as the White Queen, the Black Queen is Sasha Bordeaux, the Black
Knight is Fire, and the White King is Alan Scott."

Grant Morrison will be writing Batman after the James Robinson
story. He couldn't say who is doing the art, but he did say it
features Tailia in the first issue and it's called "Batman and
Son." They will reveal who the new artist on Batman in next issue
of Wizard.

RANDOM NOTES

The Secret Six from Gail Simone is coming out in May and follows
up on the Villains United series.

The Crisis Aftermath The Spectre begins in May. It's three issues
from writer Will Pfeifer.

Howard Chaykin said when he takes over on Hawkgirl there will be
"more airborne violence and Kendra will be dating most of the
DCU."

In Teen Titans, Robin and Wonder Girl are members for sure on the
team. Everyone else will be determined as the One Year Later
progresses.

In JSA, Paul Levitz is doing six issues and then "it looks pretty
strong after that." Geoff John isn't leaving the title he has
plans in place for them early next year.

The Supergirl in the monthly Supergirl and Supergirl that we see
in the pages of Legion of Super-Heroes are one and the same.

Mark Waid said, "For Supergirl in the Legion of Super-Heroes half
of the team will be impressed in the King Arthur kind of way and
the other half will think of her as a sort of comic book
character."

Rucka said when he takes over on Supergirl there's a possibility
she might have what he described as "identity issues."

Green Lantern Geoff Johns recapped what he said yesterday that
when the One Year Later story begins, Hal Jordon will be
searching for the Green Lantern Corps he hurt as Parallax and
that will put him up against the Cyborg Superman and Manhunters.

For Superman/Batman Mark Verheiden and Kevin Maguire are on issue
# 27 and then the new series artist Ethan Van Sciver joins up on
issue # 28. The first story is with the Huntress and another
character teaming up to rescue Superman and Batman.

Detective Comics writer Paul Dini wants to bring the book back to
its roots with one issue stand alone stories with a mystery
element to them. "I plan on using old villains and introducing
some new ones as well." Joining Dini in Detective is artist Rags
Morales.

All Star Superman issue # 4 is Jimmy Olsen versus Superman.

They can't say who new writers are for Action Comics and Wonder
Woman yet.

The Flash is not dead according to Geoff Johns.

The Fate of Cassandra Cain/Batgirl is up in the air.

As far as Birds of Prey, Barbara Gordon will remain wheelchair
bound.

There are no more plans for the Seven Soldiers after 52. Two of
the Seven Soldiers will be in 52.

Morrison said he would however like to do a Frankenstein or
Guardian ongoing series if possible.

VERTIGO NOTES FROM WONDER CON

BY CHRIS WOOD and DAVE SIKULA
At Wonder Con, Executive Editor Karen Berger, Howard Chaykin,
Joshua Dysart, David Tischman, and Steve Leialoha were on hand to
talk about the Vertigo Universe in 2006.

Here are the highlights:

The Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall original novel by Bill
Willingham and various artists will feature new never before seen
Fable characters. It's the story of Scheherazade, with Rose in
that role. The art is by Brian Bolland, John Bolton, Michael
Kaluta, Mark Wheatley, and others.

There will be a Jack of Fables ongoing spin-off series from
Willingham with art by Tony Atkins. The first issue of that is
due in stores this July.

The Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughn and Niko Henrichon is due
in stores this September. The graphic novel about a family of
lions in Iraq is based on an article that Vaughn read.

Can't Get No by Rick Veitch is a story about a man whose one
drunken and drug filled night ties him to 9/11. The original
graphic novel is due in stores this June.

Sloth by Gilbert Hernandez, is a graphic novel described as a
surreal, romantic story should hit comic stores in July.

The Bite Club: Vampire Crime Unit by David Tischman and Howard
Chaykin with art by David Hahn is a five issue mini-series that
follows the exploits of the Miami Vampire Crimes Unit. According
to Chaykin, it contains "more sex and violence." Tischman also
noted that he and Chaykin would be "open to more follow ups."

Chaykin expanded on the idea for the story. "We had basically
killed off all the characters, but still wanted to explore the
world, so we created a special crimes unit for managing vampire
crime in Miami. There's a vampire murder in a nightclub, and the
vampire cops are far more fucked up than the vampire mobsters.
The original series was an immigrant comic book; we used the
vampire point of view to express the experience of Jewish and
Cuban immigrants and other minority groups who land in South
Florida."

Chaykin said, "The immigrant nature of the book is what you pin
it on. And the sex is part of that."

Chaykin also noted, "This is the most fucked up shit of my
career. (It) brings out in me a truly reprehensible side in me
that keeps me young and fresh. I still forget that you can't do
everything in a comic book - and I keep doing it. It's really
dirty; it's funny dirty, not grim dirty. I don't like grim
filth."

In non-DC news related to Howard Chaykin, Berger mentioned that
former Vertigo editor Andy Helfer is now working for a mainstream
publisher on a line of "novel graphics." Helfer wanted Chaykin to
work on a Frank Sinatra volume, but he couldn't. "I couldn't
afford to do it for the money he was offering," Chaykin said.
"This is a vocation, as well as an avocation." Berger mentioned
other books in that series will focus on such subjects as Malcolm
X and 9/11.

The Deadman series is a new take on the character by Bruce Jones.
Deadman is no longer Boston Brand, but a pilot.

The Sandman Mystery Theatre: Sleep of Reason graphic novel tells
the story of a new Golden Age Sandman connected to Wesley Dodds.
It's not directly about Wes Dodds and Diane Belmont, though. It's
a new Golden Age Sandman, connected to the first Sandman, but it
takes place in the present day Middle East.

100 Bullets continues on with 30 issues left to go, and,
according to Karen Berger, "a new Minute Man will be revealed
soon."

As for what's happening in the Swamp Thing Dysart said the
Floronic Man is "coming soon." Upcoming guest artists include
Jock and Dean Omstron. Swamp Thing and Abby will be "coming
together" in Ormstron's fill-in issue, and begin the end of Swamp
Thing's "period of alienation."

The first part of American Splendor from Harvey Pekar and various
artists is due in April.

There will be an Absolute Sandman edition or rather editions,
containing the whole 75 issue series with cool extras. Expect the
first edition to be released next year.

Garth Ennis and Steve Dillion's proposed City of Lights is on
hold according to Berger, due to their busy schedules.

Lastly, Karen Berger is meeting with writer Grant Morrison to
discuss a new Vertigo project.

Berger then introduced DC Marketing VP Bob Wayne, who showed
trailers for The Fountain and V For Vendetta, and announced a
drawing for tickets for screening of V For Vendetta late Saturday
night.

IMAGE COMICS AT WONDER CON

PARTICIPATING IN THE IMAGE PANEL AT WONDER CON
BY BOMB QUEEN'S JIMMIE ROBINSON
Jim Demonakos came up to me at the Image booth and said, "Be
ready at 5 'o clock for the panel to talk about Bomb Queen."

To this I said, "Me? But I saw the schedule and I'm not on it."

His reply was, "We got a slide show presentation and your art is
on it, so yeah, you're on the panel."

So at 5 PM I head up there. Joined by, Erik Larsen, Mark Smith,
Zack Sherman, Frank Cho, and Rick Remender. Frank Espinoza
couldn't make the show due to a schedule conflict. Jim Demonakos
moderated - well ... once we got things rolling that is. The
slide show had some technical difficulties (no fault of anyone,
just an adapter situation) so for about ten minutes we were just
talking in random.

While waiting for the slide show to get fixed we introduced
ourselves to the 20+ people in the room. Then the problem was
fixed, the lights went down and the show was on.

A number of Image books were shown. Just the covers. Each creator
talked about his book when the cover came up on screen. I, in
particular kinda blew my presentation - one of those hindsight
things where ALL the wrong things were said, and not the right
high-pitch/concept.

Funny, Erik Larsen didn't know about Bomb Queen (it's a
Shadowline/Image book via Jim Valentino - not Image Central), and
it JUST shipped to stores this Wednesday (48 hours ago) so I
explained it a bit. I really wish I had the chance to do it again
... I kinda botched the pitch.

Anyway, Frank Cho talked about his "Women" hardcover art book.
Several audience questions went to asking about Zombie King, and
when Liberty Meadows or the FULL version of Shanna would come
out. Frank said he's pretty busy at Marvel, so his schedule is
kinda full, thus no Zombie King at least for the rest of this
year.

Rick Remender talked a bit about Sea of Red and Fear Agent, but
strangely (pun intended) Strange Girl didn't come up on screen,
or in his discussion.

Zach Sherman has a great book called, Seal Team Seven - basically
about the underwater world of Atlantis in a dispute with us land
dwellers and the seven soldier unit sent down there to clean it
up. Bullets and action. I've seen the art, it rocks BIG TIME.
Think SOCOM meets The Abyss.

Mark Smith talked up Amazing Joy Buzzards, but in a weird way,
Frank Cho missed it. Even after Mark gave a description of the
book when the slide show wasn't working, and then again when it
was working, Frank asked, "What is that Incredible Joy Buzzards
about?"

The panel chimed back, "Amazing Joy Buzzards".

Mark yet again, explained it.

Frank Cho: "So this is like a love story or something?"

Mark: "Well, there's a romance in it, but no."

Frank: "Do they have like superpowers?"

Mark: "No, just a regular band that gets caught up in these
adventures..."

Frank: "Oh, so is there like a talking dog in it?"

This went on for a tiny bit, but it was funny. Perhaps it was
scripted to give more love to AJB - which is a kick ass book, and
I have the pleasure of sitting next to Dan Hip at the Image booth
watching him make art.

Erik Larsen took a slew of Image Comics questions. Topics ranging
from submissions, to lawsuits, to smut and scheduling.

Some of the books covered on the slide show:

The Tourist
Spawn
Savage Dragon
Amazing Joy Buzzards
Fear Agent
Sea of Red
Seal Team Seven
Bomb Queen
Death Jr.
Frank Cho's "Women"
Sight Unseen
