Final edit is reserved by the editor, not the submitter! Reviews of mainstream books are welcome and we encourage reviews of indies and self published material as we feel that material deserves more exposure to the general public. If you write intelligent, coherent, and timely reviews of any comic book it will almost always be printed, so give us a shot. Commentary on the state of the industry, and personal observations and reflections related to comics are *most* likely to be included in our publication. PLEASE, no material on gaming, non-comic derived media, role playing, collectible card games, Anime or other hobbies or collectibles other than comic books. That also includes plugs for web comics and web pages UNLESS they are concerned with print comic books. We do not promote web comics per se, only the printed media. SEND US YOUR WORK ----------------- We also accept product for review purposes. Advanced copies of comic books will not be returned but any comic books sent to us *will* be reviewed in the ComicBook Net Emag in the column MY VIEW. Send material to be reviewed to: David L. LeBlanc 84 Heather Circle Jefferson, MA 01522-1419 Material is generally reviewed in the order received and be advised that we work a few weeks in advance so your review may not be in the magazine immediately. Advanced copies are therefore encouraged so the review will occur prior to your product hitting the stores. THE Comic Book Net WEB PAGE http://members.aol.com/ComicBkNet ---------------- If you have access to the World Wide Web, please stop by and visit our web page! On our web page, you can find the latest issue of our E-Mag, in both a text and a zipped version for fast downloading as well as back issues and an annotated index. You'll also find important links to some of the comic companies and creators' web pages and many other Comic Book related links! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [1] On the Net David LeBlanc ComicBkNet@aol.com The 11th Anniversary of this publication is really February 27 but this issue is the closest to that date. It is also closet to another anniversay. On February 19, 1996 I took over as Editor of the publication. This year I decided to make note of both in one issue that falls between them both. No lists of past contributors - they are too numerous to mention. No history of the Emag, the details are too much now, I wouldn't know what to leave out to make it readable without being boring to some who do not care. What I will do is thank you all, both readers and contributors. You have made the Emag what it is today. When I took over ten years ago there were only 200 readers and a few fans who shared our thoughts on what we liked about comics. Through the hallowed walls of CBEM have passed some names you would recognize either as successful on other forums, professionals who promoted their earlier work here and moved on to make a name for themseves, and our own distinguished alumni from the very beginning - Ed Dukeshire, Mike Imboden, and Chris Orr who have all made a larger mark on the industry in their own right. Who would have thought that ten years later I would be reviewing so many comics that were lettered by "The Duke" himself? - one in this very issue! My personal thanks to all those columnists whether it was only one or two or long running contributors like Paul Howley, Paul Dale Roberts, Rich Vassuer, the reviewers from ComiX-Fan, Michael Vance and of course Charles Lepage for his New Comic Book Release List and Upcoming Comics list. I borrow heavily from all the online comics news sites to get you guys the birds eye view of the news and rumors of he week. The fact that they have allow me to share this info, without serving a cease and desist order, is much appreciated. And of course the companies themselves have been generous over the years, not only with direct mail about their upcoming events but comics for review. It has always been our mission to promote comic books - of every type. The fact that so many small press and independent publishers have found us and sent their work for review, lets me know that the mission is succeeding. Free comics is the best part of this non-paying gig. When the larger companies also recognize what we are doing (like NBM, Top Cow, Top Shelf and in the past CrossGen and Acclaim and now the emerging Boom! Studios) it keeps me going week after week. I must also make note of the sponsors of our trivia contest. Thanks to Discount Comic Book Service, the trivia contest has remained the longest running feature in the Emag. Also thanks to That's Entertainment for their sponshorship when asked. On that subject March 1st is the anniversary of the start of the trivia contest so NEXT week we will celibrate that event. Finally, and mostly, I thank you the readers. 10 years ago, when I took over there were only 200 of you. Now it is over 1400 by Email and many more read it on the web. If this wasn't so important to so many people, as many of you have told me over the years, I would have given up long ago. I may not be here another ten years, but for now I'll keep plugging away at it. I hope it continues to entertain and inform. I hope the rising stars of the future - the next J. Torres, Ethan Van Skiver or Judd Winick - continue to plug away. If you want to spread the word about your work, we are still here. Thanks to the readers who want us to be here. This past Monday I was shaving and listing to the morning news talk program hosted by Hank Stoltz. If that name sounds familiar it was mentioned in Paul Howley's column, My Life With Comics, a long time ago. Hank at one time ran a comic store chain and eventually sold out to Paul. But I digress . . . It was Presidents Day and Hank posed a question about a quote by George Washington. To paraphrase, "I wish that I could wipe the plague of _______ from Mankind forever." Well after people called and guessed slavery and greed, it was about 6:15 AM so not many were awake enough to try, I called. All I said was, "It's war." and I won the prize. I got a $10 gift certificate to the local grocery store. Too bad they don't sell too many comics as this chain does not have one of those huge book and magazine sections. Still glad to get the prize. So I won two prizes within two weeks. Not bad. I am running out of radio stations and they limit you to one prize every 30 days. Just like our own Trivia Contest - except next week. See you then, as we begin our twelfth year. NOW THAT I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION - A special contest will be posted this week to the web site in conjunction with the release of the movie V FOR VENDETTA on March 17. It is open to all and movie related prizes will be provided by Warner Brothers. It will not be posted within the Emag and the winners will be chosen at random from all correct entries. Keep watching the Front Page at http://members.aol.com/comicbknet for a link to the contest. Good luck! Excelsior! Eastern Standard Time From: JazmaPika@cs.com Jeff Scott Clifford, one of the co-founders of the Peoples' Comic Book Newsletter and Jazma Online passed away on 2/17/06 Friday at 12:27am, due to a malignant brain tumor. Jeff co-founded the Peoples' Comic Book Newsletter (PCBN), a brainstorming idea on how to promote aspiring writers and artists who are trying to break into the comic book industry, which finally lead to Jazma Online! www.jazmaonline.com (an online publication of the PCBN). Jeff was heavily involved in the small press and did numerous reviews of comic books and interviews with various comic book creators. His biggest achievement was a PCBN dedication issue to Stan Lee, in which he personally went to the San Diego International Comic Book Convention and handed Stan Lee the dedication issue along with a PCBN Award Plaque. Jeff was an avid comic book collector, with at least 50,000 comic books and comic book graphic novels in his collection. Jeff would promote independent comic books, along with the PCBN in countries such as France, Amsterdam, Turkey, Italy, Belgium and Russia, by personally taking comic books/PCBNs to various comic book stores in these faraway locales. In Turkey last year, he collapsed and was diagnosed with a brain tumor and rushed back to the States. Jeff will always be remembered for his enthusiasm for comic books and the effort he placed in promoting aspiring writers and artists to get into their dream field of producing their own comic books. Jeff is now in God's hands and is most likely reading his most favorite issues of Superman and Spider-Man, two characters he adored and cherished. Godspeed Jeff. Eastern Standard Time From: magnus@montevideo.com.uy To: desperad07@aol.com CC: comicbknet@aol.com Dear Jason: In your review of X-Men: The 198 #1, back in issue #559 of the CBEM (yes, I know, it was a month ago... my computer was down and I'm doing some back reading), you ask the following about Mr. M: "Random question: Hannah calls him Absolom at one point. This was the name of one of the Externals (one of which was killed by Selene in X-Force quite a few years ago). Connection? Or is this some term of endearment in Mutant Town?" Absolom is a first name, Mr. M's name is Absolom Mercator, that's why Hannah calls him Absolom; it's just his name. New Full Color Graphic Novel features cover by FRANK CHO. Secrets of Flying Dinosaur and Human Relationships Explained! 02/19/2005 Writing humorous stories about exotic adventures is more than a job for CRYPTOZOO CREW author Allan Gross. Sometimes it's a great scientific exploration. Last year, before beginning the script for CALL OF THE THUNDERBIRD, Gross traveled to Alaska to find the hidden truth behind the legends and sightings of the mythical Thunderbird, often considered to be a surviving flying dinosaur. "My most interesting conversation came with a native Tlingat (pronounced Klingat) hunter," explained the author, "I convinced him to introduce me to a Shaman who told me their legends concerning the creature. However, neither would elaborate when questioned for more detail on their alleged personal experiences with the Thunderbird. I believe they knew more, but were attempting to protect the creature's whereabouts. I guess I don't blame them! The theories I developed surrounding the mystery are worked into the plot of CALL OF THE THUNDERBIRD". This graphic novel, with an eye-catching cover by comic artist extraordinaire FRANK CHO, also follows up last year's release with its amusing exploration of male female relationships. This is done through the interactions of the heroes of the book, Cryptozoologist Tork Darwyn and his feisty, adventurous wife Tara. For example, Allan Gross provides lighthearted groundbreaking "research" on a variety of these issues as well, such as the great mystery concerning the way one "scores points with the opposite sex". "CALL OF THE THUNDERBIRD is an origin story for Tork", explains artist Jerry Carr, who enjoyed showing Tork as a child and adding color to this year's graphic novel. "Also, unlike the first book, which was a collection of short satiric stories, it was fun to do a longer, more in depth full length adventure. It came out more like INDIANA JONES meets ROMANCING THE STONE." The new format should appeal to the wide-ranging audience that has embraced CRYPTOZOO CREW. World famous Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman ranked it as one of the top pieces of Cryptofiction in 2005. CRYPTOZOO CREW was also praised by library review magazines, the FORTEAN TIMES and COMIC BUYER'S GUIDE for its appeal to all ages, bold art and whimsical outrageous adventure. The creators of CRYPTOZOO CREW, Jerry Carr and Allan Gross will be displaying preview copies of CALL OF THE THUNDERBIRD at the New York Comic Convention as well as signing copies of their first graphic novel, comic books and providing sketches to fans. They will be available Saturday from 12:30 to 3:00, from 5:00 to 6:00 and on Sunday from 11-1:30. CALL OF THE THUNDERBIRD will be solicited in March for a May release. Allan Gross is also currently the co-creator and writer of ROADSONG from TOKYOPOP and will be featured on their convention panels at the New York Comic Convention. He is also the author of IMAGE Comics' DOCTOR CYBORG:OUTPATIENT and has written for various comic companies as well as the Tarzan newspaper strip and children's television. Jerry Carr has illustrated children's books and is a professional graphic designer.
