Renae Geerlings Promoted to Top Cow Editor-in-Chief
Nine-year vet ascends to new position

February 21, 2006
For additional information:
Jim McLauchlin, 310-651-8551

Renae Geerlings, a 9-year veteran of comic book editorial, has
ascended to a position achieved by precious few women: She will
soon be the editor-in-chief of a publishing company. Geerlings
will take over as editor-in-chief at Top Cow Productions on March
1, 2006.

"Renae has shown time and time again that she's an expert in all
areas of our business," said Top Cow founder and CEO Marc
Silvestri. "In story sense, scheduling, talent relations, and
anything else that comes up, she's the tops. We're proud and
happy to give her this well-deserved promotion."

"Over the last decade, I've come to know a lot of Top Cow fans
personally, and I feel a huge responsibility to them for all of
their support and friendship," said Geerlings. "Meanwhile,
outgoing Editor-in-Chief Jim McLauchlin raised the bar during his
tenure with books such as Common Grounds, Freshmen, and Wanted,
so I have big shoes to fill. I'm honored to work side by side
with Marc Silvestri to continue our tradition of high-quality art
and great stories."

Current Top Cow Editor-in-Chief Jim McLauchlin will step down
from his full-time position on March 1. McLauchlin returns to his
prior career as a sportswriter and broadcaster, where he will be
working for FHM, Playboy, Baseball America, and Fox. He will
remain with Top Cow as a sales and marketing consultant as well
for the next 12 months. McLauchlin will also remain in the comic
business as the president of the charitable organization ACTOR, A
Commitment To Our Roots, a cause to which he remains deeply
devoted.

Super Teens Come to Play at Alias
Kushin and Martinez unveil Super Teen*Topia at Alias Comics!

February 21, 2006 (San Diego, CA) - The kids have come out to
play this spring at Alias Comics, with SUPER TEEN*TOPIA, by
writer Kirk Kushin and artist Gonzalo Martinez!

SUPER TEEN*TOPIA is set in a world where super- powers are no
more impressive than the ability to jump far - er, really, really
far. In this amazing world of supers, four teenagers will unite
to face a crisis that pushes the limits of their untested powers.

"SUPER TEEN*TOPIA is a book that takes the comedy, romance and
teen angst of classic teen movies and meshes it with the super-
hero dynamic," said writer, Kushin. "This is the fun, feel-good
book that is the answer to your post-modern comic book blues."

Here's how the publisher describes the issue:

SUPER TEEN*TOPIA #1
Written by: Kirk Kushin, with art by Gonzalo Martinez
In the tradition of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Freaks
& Geeks and Sixteen Candles comes a new ongoing
series from Alias -- Super Teen*Topia! While "A-list"
teen super heroes travel to other dimensions and
fight cosmic overlords -- the STT gang gets stuck at
the mall waiting for a bus! In this issue Paige,
Cameron and Kevin meet for the first time as they
respond to a crisis with their untested powers. If
you're ready for a comic series that focuses more on
character than it does costume - Super Teen*Topia is
the brand new "super soap" in town! This fresh take
on high school hi-jinks starts this April with a 27
page origin story!
-- 32-pages, full-color -- $3.50

Just listen to what some of the reviews are saying ...

"Super Teen*Topia is something I didn't think was
even possible anymore - a new angle on superheroes
that doesn't sacrifice the elements that make the
genre so much fun in the first place."
- Blake Petit, Comixtreme

"This is a great first issue, and a very strong
showing for a new series ... it has potential to be a
great series."
- Chris Partin, Paperback Reader

"5 out of 5 ... This is a fun read with lots of
action and some teen drama."
- Richard Vassuer, Jazma Online

"I'm very excited about the positive reaction that Super
Teen*Topia has generated months before its release," said Kushin.

"Clearly people are hungry for a teen super-hero book that
concentrates more on the "teen" than the costume. It's gratifying
that Alias is getting behind a comic like STT."

SUPER TEEN*TOPIA #1 (order code: FEB062801) is 32-pages of full-
color action for only $3.50, shipping in April 2006, and you can
order your copy today from your local comic book shop!

For more information on SUPER TEEN*TOPIA visit Alias Comics on
the web at http://www.aliascomics.net and also at

Caption Box News - Mortal Coils for Film, Blog Milestone, and
Tentative Convention Schedule

Boston, MA - February 19, 2006. Blizzard-like conditions in
Boston also brought with them a flurry of news for Caption Box
last week, as Mortal Coils was featured in Microfilmmaker
Magazine, the Loose Pages blog exceeded 5,000 visits, and the
initial 2006 convention schedule for the small press imprint was
released.

"We at Microfilmmaker," explained Editor Jeremy Hanke, approached
a number of talented comic creators to get them to offer their
talents to micro-budget filmmakers." When this call was put out,
Caption Box's A. David Lewis responded with selections from the
Mortal Coils anthology, and he and Hanke brokered a deal for
filmmaker's use of these pre-storyboarded plots. As explained in
his February editorial
(http://microfilmmaker.com/Editorials/edit4.html), the endeavor
began with Hanke "thinking about connecting indie comic creators
with microfilmmakers. Indie comic creators want their stories
told as they wrote them and we, as microfilmmakers, want to tell
comic-style stories with a definitive visual look to them. If the
two could be brought together, then we would be a force to be
reckoned with." In addition to Lewis, the inaugural February
selection of comics-for-film include offerings from SSS Comics'
Sault Colt with Eclipse & Vega, Adam Watson's Ghost Assassin,
Chris Reily's Trouble with Igor, and Top Shelf Comics' Jay Lynch
with Dead Rat.

Thanks in part to the Microfilmmaker news, the Loose Pages blog -
Lewis' site for both industry and personal comic book news -
crossed the 5,000-visit threshold according to Sitemeter.com
(http://www.sitemeter.com/?a=stats&s=s1280lewis). "Early on, the
concept of a web log was lost on me," wrote Lewis in May of 2005.
"I understood the concept but not the appeal. It sounded like
verbal exhibitionism." Seven months and eighty posts later, Lewis
had amended his position: "[...] frankly, I don't know whether to
be proud or disturbed: Proud that my ramblings might entertain
and/or interest a portion of the blogosphere -- disturbed that so
many of you have nothing better to do [...] Still, I'll admit
that I love the eyeballs falling here, I really dig the interest
(even if it's just a passing -- or morbid -- curiosity), and I
hope to keep delivering more of...whatever it is I write that
y'all enjoy reading."

Caption Box will soon be taking to the road, though, beginning
its 2006 convention season. The initial schedule includes:

January 27
New England Comics Writers/Artists Networking Event - Allston, MA

February 24-26
New York Comic-Con - New York, NY

March 26
Granite State Comicon - Concord, NH

April 23
Larry's Wonderful World of Comics Show - Chelmsford, MA

July 19-23 [tentative]
San Diego Comic-Con

Fall
Small Press Expo (SPX)

Further, Archaia Studios Press (http://www.aspcomics.com) will be
attending the following additional shows with copies of The Lone
and Level Sands on sale:

June 2-4
WizardWorld Philadelphia - Philadelphia, PA

June 28-July 2
Origins - Columbus, OH

August 3-6
WizardWorld Chicago - Chicago, IL

August 10-13
GenCon - Indianapolis, IN

September 9-10
Baltimore Comic-Con - Baltimore, MD

Originally founded by A. David Lewis in 2000 as Serious About
Comics, Caption Box (http://www.captionbox.net) has since grown
also to encompass both academic and creative comic book works.
Serving alternatively as either studio imprint or complete self-
publishing house, Caption Box  produced the trade paperback
collection Mortal Coils: Bodylines in 2004, the original graphic
novel The Lone and Level Sands in 2005, and the God Complex novel
in 2006. All along, though, Caption Box also has remained
faithful to its academic side, with Lewis speaking at conferences
nationwide, contributing to The International Journal of Comic
Art (for which he is now an Editorial Board member), and founding
the Ever-Ending Battle research project.

*   THE CATFISH COMICS UPDATE    *
*************************************

February 22, 2006

Howdy everybody!

It's the special message I've been eager to deliver!  Over six
months in the making!

Are you sitting down?

Okay.  After the kind of delay that prematurely ages comic book
publishers, it is finally time to announce that the latest issue
of SINNAMON is ready for purchase!  No kidding!

If you go to the following link:
http://www.comixpress.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=417

You'll see the following:

SINNAMON: GRRL vs World #1

Cover by Bill Messner-Loebs!

Cindy Canyon has spent a year comatose, during which she imagined
a life spent as a superpowered heroine. At least that's what
she's been told. Where's the truth? This three issue series
starts with a close look at Cindy's life. For long time Sinnamon
fans, this is her long-awaited origin!

28 pages | Black & White | $2.97 US

Online Preview
Added Tuesday 21 February, 2006.

Yes, ComiXpress has the book ready to buy!  Click on "Add To
Cart", and Sinnamon is as close as your mail box.

If you click on the Online Preview link, you'll be taken to the
Catfish Comics Home Page which is also ready for visitors.  In
fact, all the sites are up.  Maybe I'll come to regret this, but
the idea is to add fresh content every Friday.  I'm not talking
about a big revamp, but there will be something new every Friday.

I would appreciate it if anyone visits the new Catfish Home Page
and gives me some feedback on the site.

That's it for now.  It's been a hectic day, so I'm running on
fumes.  However, I did want the members of this List to be the
first ones to know.  Yes, SINNAMON: GRRL VS. WORLD #1 is finally
in print.

I should mention that ComiXpress sent me five copies last week.
M. Gerald Delaney got a copy and his verdict mirrors my own.
ComiXpress puts out a high quality product for the money.

Thanks for being a member of this list.  It looks like things are
finally falling into place, so take care and I hope to be talking
to you again very soon!

NY Comic Con debut

Komikwerks co-founders Shannon Denton and Patrick Coyle will be
hitting the carpeted halls of the Jacob Javits Center in New York
City this weekend as they attend the New York Comic-Con. Though
not exhibiting in a booth, Shannon and Patrick will be combing
the floors, spreading the word about Komikwerks' new line of
illustrated novels for young adults, a line called Actionopolis.
The line will be distributed by Publishers Group West.  You can
get more info at the booth of Colleen Doran, Keith Giffen, Walt
Simonson or JM DeMatteis in Artist Alley.
http://www.komikwerks.com/megacon_flyer.jpg

"Actionopolis is the place to be when adventure is your
destination," exclaims Shannon Denton. "This new line of books is
by comics, film, animation and video game professionals like Dan
Mishkin, Tom Mandrake, Bruce Zick, Adam Beechen Dan Hipp, Louise
Simonson, Colleen Doran, Rob Worley, Mike Dubisch, Christopher
Long, Michael Geiger, Rick Hoberg, Gary Reed, Jeff Mariotte, Will
Meuginot, Liquid Color, and lots more. There's going to be a lot
more info about these books coming soon, but if you're at the NY
Comic-Con, and you track us down, you can catch a preview of
these fantastic looking books. We're very excited about
Actionopolis!"  The Actionopolis web site officially goes live in
a week but you can go there now to find out more in the meantime.
"We aren't going to have a booth, but you'll see us... we'll be
the guys with the factories on our shirts who won't shut up about
these great new books for readers of all ages," states Patrick
Coyle. Keep an eye out for Shannon and Patrick if you're in
attendance at the NY Comic Con. Ask them about the Actionopolis
books -- you'll be glad you did! And keep your eyes peeled for an
announcement soon with more details about the Actionopolis line
of books from Komikwerks.

Women on Witchblade: New Female Penciler, Inker, Colorist!
Writer Marz retains Y-chromosome, gets nervous

February 22, 2006

Top Cow Productions is adding top-flight female creators to one
of comics' longest-running female character books. And in an
unprecedented move in mainstream comics, the entire art team of
penciler, inker, and colorist will be composed of women.

Adriana Melo (Star Wars: Empire, Birds of Prey) takes over as the
new ongoing artist on Witchblade with July's #99. She'll be
joined by inker Mariah Benes (Superman) and colorist Sonia Oback
(City of Heroes). Melo and crew will work on Witchblade #100 in
conjunction with current Witchblade artist Mike Choi, before
taking the reins full time with #101. The new team will also
handle art chores on a 4-page original Witchblade story for Image
Comics' contribution to Free Comic Book Day.

"It's unprecedented to have three women filling the artistic
seats on a mainstream book on an ongoing basis," said Top Cow
Editor-In-Chief Renae Geerlings. "Sonia Oback has been on
Witchblade for a few issues, and has blown us away with her work.
And when we saw the team of Adriana and Mariah, we knew we had
great partners for her."

"I feel like a lucky, lucky man who's been dropped onto the Isle
of Talented Amazon Women," said ongoing Witchblade writer Ron
Marz. "I worked with Adriana on a few Star Wars issues, but the
collaboration was too brief by far. I'm really looking forward to
her settling in for a good long run on Witchblade, and bringing
Mariah and Sonia with her. What more could any man want?"

"And before anybody makes a smart-ass comment about Adriana being
hired to draw a female-lead book just because she's a woman, I
can tell you she was hired because she's the best artist for the
job," Marz continued. "Her first pages have already proven that."

"Working on Witchblade makes me very happy in that it's one of
the few books starring a strong female lead character," said
Adriana Melo. "And having the opportunity to collaborate with Ron
Marz again is outstanding. He's a great professional and a
fantastic and fun person to work with. Mariah and Sonia are
really awesome, too, and I feel blessed to have them on my side."

Top Cow will soon announce a new project involving artist Mike
Choi.
