----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] HE WAS A CAPTAIN BEFORE HE WAS SECOND IN COMMAND Jonathan Frakes is best known for being Number One, the second in command of the USS Enterprise in STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION. Before that he was most visible as the major portrayer of CAPTAIN AMERICA in personal appearances for Marvel Comics. He is easily recognizable in photos with Rosalyn and Amy Carter at the White House kicking off an Energy campaign. Good luck finding pictures on the web. I have some but can't put my hands on them in the office. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [13] My View David LeBlanc ComicBkNet@aol.com http://members.aol.com/comicbknet David LeBlanc is the Editor of the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine; which won the prestigious Eagle Award for Favorite Comic Book Ezine in 2001. He is a long-time fan of comics and the electronic media; having been the moderator of BBS comics forums on WME, FIDONET and the Comic Book Network. He and his wife live in a suburb of Worcester, MA and David works part-time at That's Entertainment, the Eisner-winning Comics and Collectibles store. David's favorite motivational phrase is: BEHOLD THE TURTLE, HE ONLY MAKES PROGRESS WHEN HE STICKS HIS NECK OUT! WALKING MAN COMICS PRESENTS SPECIAL #62 - February 2006 "10 Years of Monthly Mini-Comics Publications" 28 pages, black on colored paper, digest-sized minicomic, $2.00 by Matt Levin Walking Man Comics 123 Elm Street Hatfield, MA 01038 Walking Man Comics Presents is one of a series of Mini-Comics from Walking Man Comics including MUSICOMICS #1-56 & WALKING MAN COMICS 1-25. Any 4 are $3 or $1 each. Send a 39-cent stamp with your address for a 12-page sampler. Around the time I took over the editorial reigns of CBEM and made it a weekly (well 96% of the time) publication, Matt Levin began putting out these imaginative and elegant little mini-comics on a monthly basis. This issue is a celebration of that landmark. It is also probably the best introduction to the series there is. He made this one bigger in page count and size to reprint pages he did for the Small Press Syndicate fanzine, RAP SHEET, along with some new material. In it he explains how and why he makes his mini-comics every month along with commentary about his tools of the art, rubber stamps. In his promotional material he lays out what his goals have been - to provide an encouraging example to all who might feel unable to create comics artwork, and to promote mini-comics as an affordable, accessible means of self-expression. He has succeeded in both. Over the years I have been reading his comics I have always been amazed at the simple yet elegant story being told using just a few images arranged in various ways. But despite his somewhat humble promotional blurb, it is clear he also has a talent for script and composition that comes with practice and honing his skill. Each issue takes a theme and then blends words and pictures as well as any mainstream 4-color comic. This retrospective from the author's view tells some of how he does it. He goes over the peculiarities of his chosen form - the fact that some stamps he used before cannot now be used to make comics. He mentions how it is sometimes difficult to find stamps he can use. Imagine have a particular story that requires owls, but not being able to find a picture of an owl that fits the mood. In this case the "picture" is a rubber stamp. He talks of the unique features of using stamps, the pluses and minuses. While I think this is a fascinating and fun form of making comics - some comic snobs think otherwise. It is sort of an UNDERSTANDING COMICS for the a tiny segment of the mini-comic sub-genre. I know I encourage everyone to at least try an issue or even get the sampler to see the power of this format. Now I think if you have not done so yet then spring for the $2 and get this one instead. It is good reading and very instructive. You may even get the bug to try making such a comic yourself. And that would be a beautiful thing! THUNDER MONKEY #1 (ashcan preview) "Knuckle Sandwich" Black & white graytones, 24 pages, $2.95 (April 2006) By Lee Oaks Dream Bug Productions Laramie, WY I am not sure what to think about this comic. At times is tries to be a serious adventure comic that happens to have a talking monkey as its protagonist. At other times it reads more like a spoof of crime and spy stories in comics and other media. The story is told in flashback by a thug who is in the hospital. He is into the mob for too much money and when they come to collect his brilliant plan s to escape out the window and then rob a convenience store. What he did not count on was a powerful simian with near-invulnerable skin. Not to be stopped, Mr. Wisebrow takes a hostage and leaves the store. Now we have a standoff in the street and Wisebrow suddenly has allies. Time to se what this monkey can do. Like any good comic hero he sheds his outer clothes to reveal a costume. Next is the obligatory fight scene and eventually the fate of Wisebrow is resolve. There are some interesting characters that get involved. Lee only scratches the surface of the extent of the dealings of the mafia in this series. This was a good enough first issue to gain interest. The super- monkey has an interesting vulnerability and the enemies are tough and resourceful. Lee has a talent for scripting and his art and composition are very good. I think this will look decent in a regular-sized comic. If it doesn't get lost in the sea of struggling independents out there it should be able to find an audience. BOOM! STUDIOS www.boom-studios.com PLANETARY BRIGADE #1 24 pages, full color, $2.99 Written and created by Keith Giffen and J.M. Dematteis Cover art by Matt Haley Colors by Pilvi of Imaginary Friends Studio Letters by Ed Dukeshire Main art by: Joe Abraham 1-2, Cynthis Martin 3-8, Eduardo Barretto 9-12, Mark Badger 13-18, Chase Conley 19-20 This is a good start for yet another super hero group series. Captain Valor has appeared in HERO SQUARED but if you are like me and have not read any of that or maybe one issue, it does not detract from enjoying this story. This is an interesting mix of people with some familiar icons and some new takes on powers. Valor is the Superman of the group and they have a guy in a mask and armor, complete with the Excalibur sword calling himself Grim Knight. The best part of this opening story is the banter between these two guys with Valor using familiar phrases toward the Knight - like "old chum", "sword slinger" and "little buddy" making the Knight madder at each one and counters by calling Valor "white bread." Likewise the opening has Valor lecturing teammate Purring Pussycat, presumably a feline fighter type, who continues to tease him with sexual nuances while he remains Mr. Super straight. The interesting member is the resident mystic Third Eye who is a seventeen year-old female with an eye in her forehead. She does the whole astral plane thing and senses disturbances in the Force - er.. dimensional rifts among other things. Then there is Gaia who is the personification of the Earth Goddess who takes over the body of a human, Lisa, to protect the planet and its life. This time she is teamed with the resident alien, a Prissuvian named Mr. Brilliant, who is stranded here and amuses himself with helping the team and drinking martinis. The menace they encounter is a portal between dimensions. Third eye soon discovers it is not a thing but a person, a man, who is actually acting as the portal. He is letting in some strange monsters and TE fears even worse will get across. Much of the issue is expository of necessity but it is a good baseline to work from to continue the story. The story is well structured and scripted. The witty banter is a trademark of Giffen and hits the mark more often than not. However, there is a flaw. Nowhere is it explained why there are five different artists on the different parts of he story. It could be deadline crunch or someone's idea of a fun start. I would have preferred that cover artist Matt Haley did the whole book, as his style is most pleasing. The rest are good artists as well but the clash of styles is a bit jarring especially when you get to the part done by Mark Badger. His is more flat, if that is what you call it and comes right after Barretto's which is more reminiscent of Neal Adams. I hope they stick with one artist after this. The series could find an audience for the die-hard hero fans. ZOMBIE TALES: DEATH VALLEY #2 48 pages, full color, square bound, $6.99 Story - Andrew Cosby Written by - Johanna Stokes Pencil & Ink by Rhoald Marcellus Color by Arif Priyanto Letters by Marshall Dillon When lost we saw our intrepid teens they were trapped on a roof with a bunch of zombies trying to climb up to get them. They see a gun store across the street and realize it is their only hope for survival so the do a hand over hand across the power lines and crash in through a window. These two guys and three girls may be the only survivors in Los Angeles of some strange event that changed everyone into flesh eating dead people, and pets. They happened to be in an old bomb shelter at the time and escaped the plague. Now they have to somehow escape L.A. if they want to live. It seems the zombies sleep during the day so the kids take cars and set out to find family and gather supplies before nightfall. Their emergent leader is the daughter of a military man. The recent events have made her rethink the estranged relationship with the father she may never see again. Along the way they have lost friends to the zombies and they too became one of the undead. It is not until they realize just how that change happens that it dawns on them how serious their plight is. One last desperate attempt at flight is all they have before certain death awaits them. This story got me in the first chapter and this part moves on to the stunning conclusion with little pause to reflect. The strong female Sam is a great character complete with her own flaws as are the others. There is a bit of romance and humor to balance the horror and the action is almost non-stop. It is very entertaining. I never thought I would enjoy a zombie tale so much bit this is a keeper. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [14] TOP 100 COMICS FOR JAN 2006 Diamond Comics Diamond's top 300 list each month reports totals for the products that have shipped and billed for the month before. It presents Diamond's total monthly sales of individual titles in relation to Diamond's total sales for the issue of DC Comics' Batman shipping in the same month. (Since sales of Batman are relatively stable, the Sales Index uses it as a control title, with a value of 100. This allows retailers to compare sales of Batman to those of other titles.)
