reviews!

Title: Jagger: Jack Knifed! # 3
Publisher: Marky Comics
Writer: Mark Cardoso
Artist: Mark Cardoso
Price: $ 2.50 Can
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
Comments: This comic is for mature readers. It starts out with
Delia being used and abused. This uses sex and rape to get your
attention to much. It doesn't add enough that it needs to be
there. It just seems to be there for the sake of showing a woman
being raped.
Ultimate's revenge for Delia is brutal. He doesn't hold back.
Then he faces Jack Knife. Jack Knife has Ultimate's abilities
plus. The two stand around and have a nice talk about Heather.
As Ultimate and Jack Knife finally get around to fighting each
other it does get interesting as Ultimate draws on an inner
strength.
The ending you will not understand unless you have been
following the whole series.
The issue does focus on Jack Knife and Ultimate's confrontation
and the two trade blows. The battle does add some much needed
excitement. It seems to start off slowly and than picks up but
has no conclusion.
The Jagger series needs something new. A new character, a new
storyline, a new mission for A.S.H., to feather the A.S.H. team
working as a team. A new villain instead of just a clone of an
old one would be nice. Something new is needed.

Title: The Embalmer
Publisher: Humanoids Publishing
Writers: Sylviane Cargiat & Patrick Galliano
Artist: Chris Cross
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Comments: The art is captivating as this issue starts off. As a
fly lands on the face of a corpse we see its skin is all
withered. It is well drawn as these scenes set the atmosphere for
where we are. It is ancient Egypt.
Amenird is a priestess, as she appears in Neferites's
nightmares she is a vision of loveliness. As Neferites awakes
Satis his apprentice is there and as they talk you will get the
feeling you are in ancient Egypt.
The temple of Seth is a foreboding place. The coloring adds to
its look of quiet power.
We get to watch as Neferites teaches his art of embalming to
Satis they practice on a monkey. They also talk and we see just
how much Neferites dreams bother him.
A death occurs in the temple of Seth. It appears as if the God
struck the man dead with lightning. It was Nabtou the Queen's
slave.
The scenery as the story progresses just seems to get better
and better. The attention to detail is magnificent. The facial
expressions are intriguing.
The Vizier Menkha brings the body to get embalmed. Neferites
the embalmer is a wise man and notices the body was not killed by
lightning or Seth's anger. His servant Satis is shown as a greedy
person. He's interested in money were Neferites is not.
Neferites investigates and does an autopsy on the body
revealing one thing he was murdered.
From here on the story is only written the art is not yet done,
as this is a work in progress.
Neferites is convinced to investigate the murder. He goes step
by step as he follows each clue.
This story is left unfinished as this is only episode one. So
far it has been an engrossing read. The setting of Egypt adds a
colorful backdrop to this mystery. Neferites the embalmer is a
man who just wants to be left alone and to do his job. But he
gets drawn into this compelling adventure.

Title: Black Harvest # 3
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Josh Howard
Artist: Josh Howard
Price: $ 3.25 US
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Comments: The reporter and Zaya are out looking at lights in the
sky. She is a cute teen in her mini skirt. She also likes to
flirt a little. The reporter is shown as a caring man with
morals. The lights are shaped like saucers. Are they alien space
ships or something else? There is a hidden government base around
to.
The night scenes are wonderfully drawn. The shading of grays
and blacks are used well. The art has a cartoonish or animation
look to it. That is Josh Howards's style and it works for this
strange tale. You won't know exactly what is going on.
Now what is going on with the City Counsel? Are they really
sacrificing their children? What is going on?
The last page of the story will leave you waiting for more. It
is a lovely illustration which just delivers a message of how
mysterious things are.
The one thing that stands out is Josh Howard's drawings of
females. They are so cute and sexy!

Title: Hack/Slash: Land of Lost Toys # 3
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Tim Seeley
Artist: Dave Crosland
Price: $ 3.25 US
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
Comments: Cassie is in her dreams and are they weird. She has
He-Man and Pikachu wantabes attacking her. The art is real
cartoonish. Cassie at times does look sexy but its rare.
Cassie's way of attacking this serial killer kid is certainly
different as she sics her own nightmare on him. Cassie's
nightmare well it's pretty sick.
The pin-up by Anna Rigby is gorgeous the green added to
Cassie's stockings makes the pic. She is drawn with a content
face but the baseball bat shows she is a woman that is ready to
fight.

Title: Forgotten Realms: Exile # 3
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Andrew Dabb
Penciler: Tim Seeley
Inkers: John Lowe, Rob Atkins, Cory Hamscher, Robert Grabes
Price: $ 4.95 US
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
Comments: Our fateful group has been captured by the Mindflayers
whos telepathic power let them control Drizzt, Belwar and Clacker
as well as many others they use however they please.
Zak, Drizzt's dead father finds him but he hesitates. Does love
still exist in his dead heart?
The names are so long and hard to read. They do slow the story
down. Although they do seem to fit the story.
The Houses are still fighting amongst themselves. The women run
this society where killing and backstabbing are valued qualities.
The story moves along slowly the whole issue. The only real
excitement is at the end as Drizzt leaves the Underdark he
ventures out into the upper world.
Most of the art is to dark to clearly see. When you can it is
wonderfully done. All the different creatures show a vivid
imagination.

Title: Snake Eyes: Declassified # 6
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Brandon Jerwa
Artist: Emiliano Santalucia
Price: $ 2.95 US
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Comments: This issue shows the formation of G.I. Joe and the 13
original members. Snake Eyes is among them. Also we see Cobra's
formation the Baroness and Cobra Commander with a few others. The
Baroness is drawn as a professional business type woman.
The story shows us Scarlet and Snake Eyes getting closer. He
shows he is willing to risk his life for her. Snake Eyes we also
see is one determined man. The mission is in his hands and he
keeps on going.
Cobra Commander, Baroness and Storm Shadow the beginnings of
Cobra. They are drawn impressively. But so is Snake Eyes dressed
in grey and black he is an amazing site. His inner strength comes
through. This is a guy that just does not give up. He will
inspire you.

Title: G.I. Joe: Sigma 6 # 2
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Andrew Dabb
Penciler: Chris Lee
Inker: Ramanda Kamarga
Price: $ 2.95 US
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Comments: Spirit goes home to visit his family and the whole town
is there for his late birthday party. The art is simple like a
cartoon as its meant to be. Now Spirit's bow is a nice
technological wonder. Spirit is skilled with a bow and arrows.
The Klesh Staff a sacred relic is stolen. Spirit discovers the
thief. Zartan and Spirit have an exciting battle. They use
everything, guns, bows, rocks, even a sand storm and a
motorcycle. It is exciting and afterwards you get to sit down to
a nice home cooked meal. Well not Zartan.

Title: Drangonlance: Chronicles # 6
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Andrew Dabb
Artist: Stefano Raffaele
Price: $ 2.95 US
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Comments: The elf capital of Qualinost at first glance is a
majestic city. On closer inspection we see the people all
leaving. The Tower of the Sun is a spectacular view.
There is a very heart breaking scene between Laurana and
Tanthalas. They love each other dearly but are not fated to be
together.
To help the elves the small band of warriors goes to Pax
Tharkas to free men to fight the elves enemies. The men will die
but at least they will die free. On there way to Pax Tharkas they
are ambushed. The fight is not pretty and Tika shows she has a
warrior's heart.
Laurana joins the band in Pax Tharkas and slays the beast to
prove her worth. She wants Tanthalas to want her. She is willing
to fight for his attentions.
The final scene of Pax Tharkas will leave you stunned. The
dragon is a dark and foreboding creature above the fortress. The
coloring and shading bring forth the menace that waits within.

Title: G.I. Joe: America's Elite # 8
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Joe Casey
Artist: Stefano Caselli
Price: $ 2.95 US
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
Comments: The Red Ninja Clan appear as a mysterious and tough as
nails group. What is their mission?
Is Snake Eyes really dead? The team is grieving. This has
struck them in their hearts, losing such a comrade in arms. The
one hot hardest is Scarlet. She is shown wallowing in grief.
Flint talks to her but doesn't help. He has suffered the same
type of grief but doesn't know how to offer comfort.
Storm Shadow is drawn nicely with a menacing side. Kamakura
looks kind of like a street thug.
At the end we get a surprise that will leave you wondering is
Snake Eyes really dead? Maybe, maybe not. It does leave you
wanting to know.

Title: The Tales of Bloody Mary # 6
Publisher: Bloody Mary Comics
Creator: Bobbie Weiner
Writer: Rick Landis
Artist: Tom Carlton
Price: $ 2.95 US, $ 4.55 Can
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Comments: The opening scene of the house is an eerie setting. Tom
Carlton and Jude Millien do a fantastic job of coloring it. The
grays and blacks are blended nicely. The tree and fence in the
foreground add a perfect dimensional touch to the drawing.
The people are drawn in a unique different style. Sometimes it
is a bit vague. Now Mary and her gun toting companion enter a
cave. The scene is one of waiting as they see the demons and the
demons see them. The demons are creepy evil looking creatures of
the abyss. Mary looks ready and pumped up. Her companion starts
shooting and Mary transforms into a nightmarish creature of teeth
and claws.
The Priest is easy to see how evil he is. He is drawn with a
sinister look. The way he acts leaves no doubt of his intentions
towards Mary.
Mary is wonderful and completely different from anything you
have ever seen before. If you like the supernatural, the weird,
blood and guts why aren't you reading this already? Plus Mary is
drawn as one cute teen babe. Her character just shines through,
as well you might be afraid of her but you'll also fall in love
with her.

SOMEHOW I ALWAYS GET THE VILLAIN ROLE

CYRIL RITCHARD is best known today as CAPTAIN HOOK in the 1960
color TV version of PETER PAN starring MARY MARTIN, repeated many
times and available on DVD.  But he took part in another TV
musical in 1965.  In the rarely seen THE DANGEROUS CHRISTMAS OF
RED RIDING HOOD, Ritchard plays the Wolf, from whose perspective
the tale is told.  LIZA MINELLA played Red Riding Hood and the
rock group THE ANIMALS played the Wolf Pack.

OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Name: The Red Diaries
Publisher: Image
Written by: Gary Reed
Art by: Laurence Campbell, Chris Jones & Ken Meyer Jr.
Website: www.garyreed.net
Comments:  I love it when truth mixes in with fiction, that is
the foundation for legends and The Red Diaries takes the truth of
the Kennedys, Marilyn Monroe and mixes it with the ficticious
Raven Inc.  I place The Red Diaries right up there with Dan
Brown's DaVinci Code, it's a must-read!  If you are going to read
any book this year, this is the book to read.  A book filled with
intrigue and mystery.  Let me tell you a bit about the legendary
Raven Inc.  Raven Inc. is known to investigate things of the
paranormal.  Mixed in with the team are believers and skeptics
alike.  I wouldn't doubt it if there was a secret case out there
in which the Raven Inc. teamed up with Mulder and Skully of the
X-Files, both have the tendency of looking into the same type of
cases.  There is an exceptional character profile on each and
every member of the Raven Inc. in this book, so the reader gets
the scoop on each member and you have the ability of knowing
them, almost on a personal level.  Manny Chanchu, an operative of
Raven Inc. is being interrogated...I mean he is involved in a
fact finding discussion with the FBI.  The FBI wants to know
where the Red Diaries are.  The Red Diaries are the diaries kept
by Marilyn Monroe that detailed her affairs with the Kennedys, a
scandalous confession that could have brought the house down on
the Kennedys.  If you know anything about the Kennedy conspiracy,
you will be familiar with some  of the characters, such as Carlos
the assassin.  The artwork is superb in this graphic novel and I
love the photo/art of Marilyn Monroe throughout this book.  There
are plenty of clandestine meetings.  Carlos will eventually be
found spread-eagled on his bed, with his intestines pulled out.
There is some dry humor in this story too, that touches on the
dry humor of the TV show CSI.  It makes the story even more
interesting.  Carlos had a shrine to Marilyn, with photos
everywhere.  Marilyn's son is revealed and things focus on how
Marilyn was a threat to the Kennedys, she could have brought
scandalous revelations upon Camelot.  Who killed Marilyn?  You
want to know, find out in the Red Diaries!  Find out the
connection between Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy, Fidel Castro,
The Mob, J. Edgar Hoover and the CIA!  Oh...and Raven Inc.!  In
this book you will find:  Suspicious deaths of real witnesses;
Internal Notes by Gary Reed - he sums up the Red Diaries;
November 22, 1963 Chronology of Events; Article - The Kennedy
Assassination - Why we Care and Why we Should; the official
version of the assassination of John F. Kennedy; article - The
CIA, The Bay of Pigs and Kennedy; article - The Kennedys -The
Rise to American Royalty; article - The Mysterious Death of
Marilyn Monroe!  The Investigators - Although the members of
Raven, Inc. (as seen in Raven Chronicles) usually deal with the
paranormal, in the Red Diaries, they have embarked on a case of
reality and it may prove to be their most dangerous case yet!
Gary Reed has proven himself a genius with The Red Diaries,
after I finished reading this graphic novel, I kept asking
myself...'how did he come up with this?"  The Red Diaries is the
most compelling, intriguing book I have read in a long, long
time!  I felt somewhat paranoid after reading The Red Diaries!
Gary Reed shakes the foundation of conspiracy with The Red
Diaries, absolutely magnificent!

Name: Lo-Fi Comics and Entertainment Magazine Jan 06 #4
Price: $5.95
Comments: Wow! Another comic book magazine! I found this gem at
Border's Books right next to Wizard Magazine! To my surprise,
it's filled with articles, reviews and great comic book artwork!
In this issue, I enjoyed reading the section "Comic Book News"
that discusses great comics from GI Joe to Judo Girl to Conan! I
always enjoy reading great reviews and I was surprised to see
reviews on some of the comics I read now, such as Dangergirl,
Chicanos, Jason X and Jenna. If you guys keep this up, you may
steal some of the fanbase of Wizard readers! I also enjoyed
reading on comics that I don't read, such as Rival Schools, that
peaked my curiosity. A story about a group of schools in Tokyo
that rival each other and there is this ninja dictator named Hyo.
Okay, I will check this out, especially since there are some
weird student kidnappings going on. Sounds intriguing. Glad to
hear the news that Buckaroo Banzai makes a return in comics
format! I love this character! Because of your article on Half-
Dead, that is basically a action horror comic book, I will now go
to my nearest comic book store and find it. It sounds like a
comic book that shadows Underworld: Evolution, since it deals
with vampires and para-military action. Another added bonus is
that you review movies, such as Ultraviolet, V for Vendetta (saw
this movie and absolutely loved it), Mission Impossible III and
The DaVinci Code! Then when I thought the dessert was all over
with, I get an article about the Toy and Action Figurine Museum
and even a comic book story called Wormwood! You guys made my
night!

Name: Beet - The Vandel Buster Vol 9
Publisher: Shonen Jump Manga
Story: Riku Sanjo
Art: Koji Inada
Price: $7.99
Comments:  In this comic book, there is a new dark age coming
about and monsters lurking about called Vandels.  On this night
went out and saw the movie "V for Vendetta", which I highly
enjoyed and it was an added treat to come home and relax with The
Vandel Busters, that has a very intriguing story in itself.  The
Vandels of course want to rule the world and the Vandel Busters
of course fight against the Vandels.  There is rumor that Vandel
Busters known as the legendary Zenon Warriors were killed in
battle by the Vandels and their magic Saiga weapons go to one
Vandel Buster known as Beet.  Beet is the Buffy the Vampire
Slayer to the Vandels.  Beet is the strongest, the bravest of the
Vandel Busters.  Beet wants to end the age of darkness.  Now Beet
faces a mystery, are the Zenon Warriors really dead, when one of
their warriors named Cruss is found in the land of Bekatrute,
suffering from amnesia and has some severe injuries.  The artwork
in this comic book is detailed with excellence.  A very good
read!

WHILE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT MUSICALS

FRED FLINTSTONE and his neighbor BARNEY RUBBLE made one venture
away from their 1960's TV series---and in a musical to boot!  In
1967 a live action and animated musical of JACK AND THE BEANSTALK
was made for NBC (oddly enough, the FLINTSTONES played on ABC!)
The cavemen play a two headed caterpillar with Gene Kelly as
Jack.

LET DAI (Vol. 1 January 2006)
240 pages, black 7 white, Manwha TPB, 5X7", $9.99
by Sooyeon Won
Translator - Jane Choi

Netcomics
www.netcomics.com

This is actually one of the first three books from the
Korean company Netcomics, released this year. I have previously
reviewed their February releases. They have a strong presence
online where you can read their comics as well. This year they are
entering the print media in the US.

DAI is the leader of a gang called The Furies in neo-Seoul. A
schoolboy, Jaehee, happens on them taunting a girl and he steps
in to stop them. What happen next changes not only his life but
that of the girl and her sister as well as the devilishly
beautiful Dai. Naturally the gang turns on Jaehee for his
interference and he manages to escape their wrath, but only for
that day.  Soon they catch him alone and proceed to beat and
torture him. And then a strange thing happens. The leader, Dai,
stops their activity and proceeds to surprise them by cutting
himself in the chest and forcing Jaehee to lick it. He then
kisses Jaehee and declares, "You are mine." Sort of vampiric,
don't you think?

The plot thickens as the lives are intertwined. The girl, Yooneun,
is enamored with Jaehee and her sister, she finds out later,
considers herself his boyfriend. Meanwhile, the bizarre ritual
and others that follow are slowly dragging Jaehee into Dai's
orbit. He is beginning to feel love for another boy and is
confused and intrigued. Nothing is black and white in this story.
Dai is not just a good looking bad boy. We learn about some of
the things that have harden him and why he demands much of
Jaehee.

This is a study in relations and perhaps will lead some to a
better understanding why one might turn to a homosexual
relationship, whether or not they even had considered it before.
We have yet to learn how deep the relationship will go but it has
hurt some and by the end of this chapter leads to betrayal.

The art is special in that it conveys the emotions very clearly.
The characters are distinct and special care is made to show Dai
as the enchanting person apart from the others. It is a very
serious story with some touch of humor to break the mood but
never distracts too much. It is a story you can immerse yourself
into very easily.

One of the most infamous outlaws in the cosmos has been tasked
with capturing three escapees from a prison planet. The trail
leads him to a backwater world that is also his home, Earth. He
teleports to Earth and lands in a free clinic, much to the
surprise of a female doctor and her nurse. The dialog is perfect,
as expected. He tries to tell them in a few words they are in
grave danger while the doctor wants to hold him for the police
for breaking and entering.

Meanwhile, the bad guys are planning something big for the
planet, indeed for the whole Universe. As they set their plan in
motion one detects Harm's presence on the planet and they set out
to lure him into battle while two of them take care of business.
After showing the doc just how much of a threat he could be Harm
heads for the sound he knows leads to his prey. The doctor and
nurse start to follow to what they don't know. Thus we get to the
big fight scene which ends with an unlikely interruption.

The main story is enough to drive the characters to the
inevitable confrontation but the real fun is the interaction of
the two groups separately. The trio of bad guys have a certain
charm. Giffen and Grant have a way of having thoroughly
despicable beings carry on a normal conversation, while plotting
to blow everything up. The art is pretty cool on its own. The
alien beings are imaginative while the Earthlings are a bit out
of proportion but not in a bad way. It is a fun book with more
excitement from page to page. Can't wait for the next issue!

ZOMBIE TALES: THE DEAD #1
48 pages, full color, squared bound, $6.99
Various Artists

Boom! Studios
www.boom-studios.com

The Zombie anthology is back with more ways to tell a tale of the
living dead than you ever thought could exist. The mix of stories
and artists is good and the production value is first rate. Like
the other books from Boom! Studios I found it well done and
entertaining.

"Four Out Of Five"
Writer - John Rogers
Art - Ed Tadem
Colors - Rans
Letters - Marshall Dillon

Open to a train stranded on the tracks and a bunch of soldiers on
the roofs shooting the zombies as they surround and try to climb
the cars. As they fight we learn the twist to this story. It
seems there have been outbreaks of zombies every hundred years
but the plague never spread very far and had been kept quiet. Now
the epidemic is massive and and more people are being infected
all the time. What is the secret which revealed to these special
soldiers how to defeat the zombies?  Heh, heh - it's too good to
reveal, but it is unique and there is a hint in the title!

"The Miracle of Bethany"
Writer - Michael Nelson
Art - Lee Moder
Colors - Rans
Letters - Marshall Dillon

In the Vatican a monsignor is pleading with a cardinal to sponsor
his elevation to the order. The Cardinal denies him saying indeed
he has a higher calling, just not what he wants. They are
interrupted by a priest who burst in and without speaking shows a
bite on his forearm. The Cardinal knows what must be done. The
man has been bitten by a zombie and has not long before the
transformation. The Cardinal leads them to the catacombs to
conduct a ritual and reveal a secret so sacred the priest had
been silenced to guarantee it is not spoken of to anyone. What
has the Church been hiding. The story title refers to the Gospel
story of Lazarus being raised from the dead. You may guess the
rest from here and what role the Monsignor will be chosen to
perform. Another good twist on the nature of zombies!

"A Game Called Zombie"
Story - Jim Pascoe
Layouts - Don Simpson
Art - Chris Moreno
Color - Marshall Dillon, Terri Delgado, Sunder Raj
Letters - Marshall Dillon

A kid at the fair with his parents, what is more all-American?
Like most kids Travis is full of energy and wants his dad to play
with him while mom keeps pressing him to stop. Dad is more easy
on him and teaches him how to play Zombie. The person who is it.
tries to tag the other while his eyes are closed, because zombies
can smell human flesh. The boy gets distracted by mom again
nagging him to settle down and Dad catches him and now Travis
must play the zombie. However, he can't resist opening his eyes.
When he does he is in a much different carnival with no one in
sight, except a crowd of zombies slowly coming at him. He runs to
hide and when he peeks out his dad is back again. He tries to
warn him of what he saw, but is not taken seriously. Now he sees
the zombies coming back, and a small girl with a large knife is
creeping up behind is dad. What is real and what is not?  You
might still be wondering by the end.

"Deadest Meat"
Writer - Keith Giffen
Art - Ron Lim
Color - Rans
Letters - Ed Dukeshire

A zombified man is on the shore of a tropical vacation island. Now
it is just zombies on the beach. The man is slowly loosing his
thinking capacity. He is mixing up thoughts, forgetting things. He
knows it won't be long until all remnants of who he is are gone.
He tries not to show to the other zombies anything that makes him
look anything other than a fully zombified man. Now the others
are pointing to another group of zombies on the far end of the
beach as if to say, lets go get them. But our narrator finds
another calling.

"I, Zombie: Remains of the Day - part 3"
Story - Andrew Cosby
Art - Fabio Moon
Colors - Rans
Letters - Ed Dukeshire

A couple of soldiers are out on a mission in the city taken over
by zombies. In the past we saw that even the animals are
infected. That is not so strange that they are in a pet store -
one in a cage, presumedly to keep safe from the animals, while
the other is on a shelf above and has apparently been shooting
the little buggers as they attack. Their real goal is to find the
so-called patient zero, and their friend Beth who has a cat. Roger
is the wimp in the cage while Eugene has the gun. They finally
find Beth but she has been zombified and is now super strong. Now
it is the hunters being hunted. Eugene probably regrets those
things he said about Beth before. Heh, heh

"ZOOMBIES"
Writer - Johanna Stokes
Artist - Cynthia Martin
Colorist - Pamela Rambo
Letters - Ed Dukeshire

That is not a typo. The action takes place in a zoo.  All the
animals in this tale are talking to one another and planning a
strategy of some sort. They are safe in their pits behind the
locked entries from the zombies that approach. But hey know they
cannot stay here for they would starve. Even the lion is held
back from attacking the others in order to form a unified front
to thwart the zombies. One note on the art - the zombies don't
look like people at all. They are black blobs in humanoid shape
and skulls for heads. They break in a wooden gate and the animals
set their plan in motion. There are sacrifices made but they are
successful. If you accept the premise the animals are somehow
intelligent and can converse then the tale is logical and ends
correctly. It is a thoughtful piece.
