Norton brings back Kings in Disguise

by Sunyoung Lee, PW Comics Week -- 4/4/2006

W.W. Norton's debut into the world of graphic novel publishing
could be said to have officially taken place last year with its
release of two Will Eisner titles, The Plot: The Secret Story of
the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and the classic Contract with
God trilogy, but this April's reissue of James Vance and Dan
Burr's Kings in Disguise promises to solidify Norton's status as
the newest high-profile player in this rapidly expanding genre.
Taken together with the 2004 signing of R. Crumb's much
anticipated and still forthcoming nonfiction take on the Book of
Genesis, it's clear: after more than five years of distributing
Fantagraphics, the indie comics mainstay, Norton's finally
getting serious about publishing its own graphic titles.
Long considered a classic in the field, Kings in Disguise won
both Harvey and Eisner awards when it was published more than 15
years ago by the now defunct Kitchen Sink Press. Neil Gaiman, one
of the book's many distinguished fans, described it as being as
important as Maus, Watchmen and Love & Rockets "in the rise of
the graphic novel, showing that comics can take on any kind of
story."

Norton editor Tom Mayer first heard of the title from Judy
Hansen, the agent who helped Denis Kitchen put together the deal
for Eisner and Crumb. Mayer asked her if she could recommend any
other titles for Norton. "I said, you know, this is Norton, we're
not going to publish manga, but I am interested in seeing more
literary graphic projects," Mayer recalled. Hansen sent him
Kings, and Mayer loved it. "It's all too easy to say that this is
a graphic novel. But I'm trying to think of this as literature,"
said Mayer.

Kings in Disguise follows the story of a young boy, Freddie
Bloch, whose family has disintegrated under the pressures of the
Great Depression. Freddie sets out for Detroit to look for his
father after his older brother is carted off to jail for
attempted robbery, and quickly falls in with an experienced if
somewhat eccentric tramp who goes by the moniker the King of
Spain. Together, the two crisscross the nation, catching rides in
boxcars and living in a world of soup kitchens, labor riots and
shantytowns. As depicted by James Vance's plain-speaking,
understated prose and Dan Burr's hard-lined drawings, Kings in
Disguise is a dry-eyed, meticulous evocation of the poverty and
resilience of the dispossessed.

Norton's new edition boasts a foreword by Alan Moore, who
described the book as a "mud-stained masterpiece of raindog
regents and their unsung histories," as well as a revised intro
by James Vance, who traced the book's origins from a short story
to a play to a comic book. The paperback reprint will have an
initial print run of 7,500, which Mayer described as "a modest
run." The books will be widely distributed, and Mayer also hoped
to introduce the title to academics through Norton's college
sales reps. Although there had been some talk of publicizing the
book with an animated short that would then be sent out to blogs,
advertising will most likely be limited to what Mayer calls
"undercover Web marketing, sending books to those who discuss
graphic novels, sending the book to those who are in the know and
would remember the book."

Most of the advertising push will be saved for next year, when
Norton will be publishing and promoting the hardcover sequel to
Kings in Disguise, called On the Ropes. The sequel was always
part of the plan -the titles were signed in a two-book deal, with
the paperback reprint designed to set the foundation for the
hardcover release. Although only the first 25 pages of On the
Rope's script have come in thus far, Mayer's hoping to finish up
production on the book this summer for a spring 2007 release.
In describing Norton's vision for this new area of publishing,
Mayer invoked Norton's longstanding mission: "Norton's motto is
'Books that live,' so we want to do that for graphic novels as
well," he said. "We don't want to do a flash-in-the-pan graphic
novel, we want to publish great books. We want books with legs
that we'll be proud about in 10 or 15 years." Still, Mayer
conceded that the field of publishers wanting to get into comics
is a crowded one. This came into stark focus when he visited the
first New York Comic-con this past February. Walking around on
the floor "was like being on an airplane," he said. "Clearly we'd
like to think of ourselves doing our graphic novels as important,
but when it comes down to it, we're like a small bottle floating
around in this massive ocean."

Robert was the sole writer of the Marvel Knights 2099 five week
event special series, a Jubilee mini-series and last year wrote
the Fantastic Four: Foes mini-series, all for Marvel Comics.  You

some of my favorite guests on from the past four and a half years
of broadcasting on the live shows before 'Big 300'" says show
host Scott Hinze.  "Kirkman is one of those comic pros that not
only writes a ton of refreshingly fun reads, and is great on the
air.  Last Sunday with Mark Waid helped spark a massive online
conversation about Kryptonite and we'll keep trying to keep
fandom mobilized.  This Sunday, I'm sure you can expect our
trademark chaotic fun, but we will definitely be covering recent
comic book offerings, video game releases, pop culture news items
and, of course, our infamous 'SUB OR FLUB' session.  I'm really
looking forward to this one."

Kirkman himself adds, "Fanboy Radio is an absolute blast to be

EASTER EGGS JUMP FROM DVDS AND VIDEO GAMES TO COMICS

Zoom Suit Features Hidden Phone Numbers and Internet Flash Movies

April 7, 2006, Palm Beach, FL - A slew of surprises await comic
fans on April 26 when Zoom Suit #1 hits comic shops featuring an
overt cover contest and a gaggle of covert "Easter Eggs"
revealing phone numbers and web sites that take readers out of
the comic and into the middle of an internet conspiracy. The term
"Easter Eggs" stems primarily from the world of DVDs. A bridge
easily gapped since Zoom Suit is based upon an award-winning
animated short.

"We hid a few Easter Eggs on our web site as well as on our DVDs,
so placing them in Zoom Suit #1 was a logical evolution,"
explained Zoom Suit creator John Taddeo. "However, we took it
pretty far. There are at least three Flash films to find and a
hidden phone number as well."

Hunting for these media morsels is fast becoming a cultural
pursuit. Easter Eggs abound in DVDs and video games and have even
found their way onto numerous other forms of media. With its high
resolution printing and premium production values, Zoom Suit is a
logical choice to introduce Easter Eggs to the comic format.
"Get ready for the Boom when Zoom Suit hits comic store shelves
this April," said William Insignares, owner of Demolition Comics.
"With its iron-clad storytelling, meticulous metallic art
throughout and hidden secrets, this hot book is bound to sell out
fast!"

The quest in Zoom Suit begins with an alien "Zeta Reticulan"
phone number and ends with prizes such as a limited edition Zoom
Suit DVD signed by the creative team. In addition, many other
surprises are peppered throughout the entire four issue limited
series.

"The comic industry has been doing some phenomenal things in
storytelling and art for the past several years," said Phil
Boyle, owner of comic book chain Coliseum of Comics.  "I'm very
excited about Zoom Suit appealing to a much wider audience than
some of the traditional comics, thereby bringing in a new
generation of comic readers. There are a lot of great things
happening in comics and Zoom Suit is one of them."

Zoom Suit is easily one of the most impressive new comic book
creations we have experienced in a decade," said D.J. Stamper,
CEO of The Comics Club in Brandon, Florida. "Zoom Suit has all
the bits and pieces that fans demand: quality art, intriguing
characters, solid story. This one is a top-of-the-list must-
read!"

Now the only worry is will there be enough to satisfy the demand.
Zoom Suit creator John Taddeo has been vocal in warning fans to
pre-order at a local comic shop, as shelf copies will likely
disappear quickly.

"Zoom Suit #1 will be allocated. We do not have enough copies to
fill all orders. Retailers will only receive 90 percent of their
initial orders, so if you want to ensure yourself a copy, please
contact your local comic shop right away."

Chris Claremont Takes Time for Recovery

On March 5, comic industry legend and current writer of Uncanny
X-Men and Excalibur, Chris Claremont, was overcome by exhaustion
while attending a conference in Italy.

Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery and return to
the comic industry he helped build.

Chris Claremont is best known for being the definitive X-Men
writer and over thirty years later is still writing Uncanny X-Men
along with New Excalibur.

After treatment and tests in Italy, Claremont was diagnosed with
cardiac stress and last week returned to New York City where he
will continue his rehabilitative therapy.

Due to this brief hiatus, Claremont's newest projects - his
taking over Exiles and debuting GeNext - will be pushed back
until late in the year when he returns.  Claremont will be coming
back to the fold soon, and Marvel is pleased to announce that he
will be a part of this family for many years to come, as he
recently renewed his exclusive contract.

Marvel wishes Claremont a speedy recovery and looks forward to
future classic stories from an industry legend.

MILLAR RE-UPS WITH MARVEL THROUGH 2008

On the eve of his return to the public eye, including a
comprehensive interview here at Newsarama scheduled for this
coming Monday, writer Mark Miller has informed us that he has re-
upped his exclusive contract with Marvel for another two years.

"Marvel has been great to me these past five years," Millar said,
explaining his decision to renew his exclusive. "I've had an
incredible time and, for a bunch of reasons I'll explain in
Monday's interview, I wanted to make a commitment to them in the
long-term.

"I've signed up until the middle of 2008 and, with Marvel Civil
War, feel like I'm really just kicking into high gear. It's no
secret that I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease last year and
Ike [Marvel Chief Executive Offer Isaac Perlmutter] was just
brilliant about it. He flew me out to the States and had some of
the best doctors in the world check me over. It's been a long six
months, but I'm feeling a good deal better after all their
treatment and just really want to repay that by upping Marvel's
market share to an almost embarrassing degree. DC has been
terrific lately. They've really upped their game in the time I've
been off, but I've got a few tricks up my sleeve. It's going to
be an exceptional year for comics and I couldn't be happier about
being back."

PETER DAVID TO SCRIPT 1st 7 ISSUES of STEPHEN KING's DARK TOWER

"New Comic Series, Launching in February 2007, Explores the
Origin of the Notorious Gunslinger Character "

NEW YORK - Marvel Comics has tapped prolific author and veteran
comic book writer Peter David to script the first seven issues of
the ground-breaking new comic book series adapted from Stephen
King's magnum opus, The Dark Tower. The first issue is scheduled
to debut in February 2007.

The series will expand the saga of King's epic hero, Roland
Deschain, whose quest to save the Dark Tower is captured in seven
best-selling novels published over the course of twenty-five
years. The new stories delve into the life and times of the young
Roland, revealing the trials and conflicts that lead to the
burden of destiny he must assume as a man, the last Gunslinger
from a world that has moved on. The comics will work in
conjunction with the novels, further supplementing and defining
the saga's mythology under the direction of the acclaimed author
himself.

"You have to understand: To me, it was yesterday that I was
standing on line at a Stephen King book signing, telling him that
I was an aspiring writer, and he inscribed a copy of 'Danse
Macabre with 'To Peter: Best of luck on your writing career.'
Since then I've had a great deal of luck, and this opportunity
is-by me-one of the luckiest breaks of them all," says David.
"I'm extremely excited to be a part of such a highly anticipated
project, and am looking forward to contributing however much I
can to King's epic fantasy. I just wish I could go back and tell
the kid on the autograph line; he probably wouldn't believe it."

The series will be illustrated by Eisner-award winning artist Jae
Lee.

"We are thrilled to have Peter on-board to kick off this historic
comic project. He is one of the most acclaimed comic book writers
working today. The millions of Dark Tower fans are certainly in
for a real treat," said Joe Quesada, Marvel Entertainment's
Editor-In-Chief and Chief Creative Officer, Publishing

Peter David's career as a popular author spans nearly two
decades. He has worked in a variety of entertainment media-
television, film, books, short stories and comic books-and has
acquired followings in all of them.

In the literary field, Peter has had over fifty novels published,
including numerous appearances on the New York Times Bestsellers
List. His novels include Sir Apropos of Nothing and the sequel
The Woad to Wuin, Knight Life, Howling Mad, and the Psi-Man
adventure series. He is the co-creator and author of the
bestselling Star Trek: New Frontier series for Pocket Books, and
has also written such Trek novels as Q-Squared, The Siege, Q-in-
Law, Vendetta, I, Q (with John deLancie), A Rock and a Hard Place
and Imzadi. He produced the three Babylon 5 Centauri Prime
novels, and has also had his short fiction published in such
collections as Shock Rock, Shock Rock II, and Otherwere: Stories
of Transformation, as well as Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction
Magazine and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

Peter's comic book resume includes an award-winning twelve-year
run on The Incredible Hulk, and many fans consider David's work
on The Incredible Hulk to be the definitive interpretation of the
character. David's other Marvel Comics work include runs on
Wolverine, the New Universe series Merc and Justice, a run on the
original X-Factor, the futuristic series Spider-Man 2099, about a
man in the year 2099 who takes up the mantle of Spider-Man (the
title character of which David co-created), and the 2000 and 2002
versions of Captain Marvel. He has also written comic book
related novels, such as The Incredible Hulk: What Savage Beast,
and co-edited The Ultimate Hulk short story collection.
Furthermore, his opinion column But I Digress... has been running
in The Comic Buyers's Guide for nearly a decade and was also
collected into a trade paperback edition.

MARVEL NAMES CN EXCLUSIVE U.S. BROADCAST HOME FOR ALL-NEW
FANTASTIC FOUR ANIMATED

Marvel Entertainment, Inc. announced today that it has entered
into an agreement with the Cartoon Network through which the
broadcaster has obtained the exclusive domestic television rights
to Marvel's highly-anticipated, all-new animated series based on
the ever-popular Fantastic Four Super Hero franchise. Cartoon
Network will debut the series in Fall 2006. The announcement was
made by Michael Helfant, President/COO of Marvel Studios, and
Terry Kalagian, Vice President of Acquisitions and Co-
Productions, of Cartoon Network.

Co-produced by Marvel Studios and Moonscoop -- the award-winning,
cutting-edge animation company behind such series as the Cartoon
Network hit Code Lyoko - the Fantastic Four series combines a
dynamic mix of 2D and 3D animation. Based upon the original
Marvel characters and classic storylines, this new series follows
the high-energy adventures of one of the comic book world's most
prominent crime-fighting teams -- Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible
Woman, The Human Torch and The Thing - as they battle villains
and their ultimate rival, Dr. Doom. Avi Arad is executive
producer of the series, and Eric Rollman, EVP, Home Entertainment
& Television Production, and Craig Kyle, VP Creative Development,
Animation, are the production executives for Marvel.

Last summer, the live action Fantastic Four feature film scorched
the box office and became a blockbuster movie event - grossing
more than $330 million worldwide and sparking the development of
a sequel planned for summer 2007.

The initial season broadcast commitment for the animated series
on Cartoon Network is 26 half-hour episodes. The domestic deal
now makes Cartoon Network the global home for the Fantastic Four
animated series. Late last year, the broadcaster struck a deal
with Moonscoop to carry the series in all territories outside the
U.S.

"Cartoon Network is the perfect home for the Fantastic Four. The
network has established itself as one of the top providers of
high-quality animation entertainment. Their commitment to this
series will further Marvel's mission to drive consistent, high-
profile exposure and excitement for The Fantastic Four franchise
worldwide," said Mr. Helfant. "The television series furthers our
aggressive strategy to fully support our characters through
feature films, DVDs, video games, merchandising and television
animation."

"Cartoon Network is the home for super heroes and will be a great
home for the Fantastic Four," said Terry Kalagian, vice president
of acquisitions and co-productions for Cartoon Network, "We're
sure it'll be a fantastic addition to our programming line-up".

Marvel will further support the series with a targeted licensing
program. Merchandise is expected to include: toys, interactive
entertainment, and apparel.
