----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] DON'T LISTEN TO THIS RECORD BEFORE DINNER One of the rock group JAN AND DEAN'S last efforts before a car crash sidelined the duo was JAN AND DEAN MEET BATMAN, a comedy LP. When the 1966 TV series BATMAN was running, a longtime running joke were the "Holy" expressions Robin BURT WARD would come up with. On the album, the actor playing Robin has a rather unique and disgusting one. When Batman finds a clue, Robin exclaims 'GAGGING MAGGOTS, BATMAN!" _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [10] Rich's Reviews Richard Vasseur richardv@sympatico.ca http://www.jazmaonline.com [Rich has been collecting comic books for about 25 years. He belongs to two comic book clubs Jazma and ORCA. He has been writing reviews for Jazma's paper newsletter for about 2 years and has his own review page at www.jazmaonline.com] SPOILER WARNING: Some plot details may be revealed in these reviews! Title: Cyber Force # 1 Publisher: Top Cow Writer: Ron Mars Penciler: Pat Lee Inkers: Erik Sander & Rob Armstrong Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.60 Can Rating: 5 out of 5 stars Comments: You want action you got it. A major space battle is taking place. The ships designs look smooth and sleek. They have lots of firepower. Than we switch scenes to three lovely women sitting having dinner and a few drinks. Dominique, Psyblade has Velocity and Ballistic over for a small dinner party. The girls are actually having some fun, joking around. These ladies do look beautiful. Its hard to tell they are waiting for a homicidal maniac of a former teammate to try to kill them. Robert, Ripclaw explodes onto the scene. The artwork shows off his speed of movement with the blurring of certain parts of the drawing. Pat Lee out does himself. If you thought the space battle was action packed you haven't seen anything yet. Your heart will start to race as these four go all out to put each other down. These are not some goody two shoes super heroes these are killers. The ending is mind blowing. You'll never see it coming. If your tired of those wimpy super hero comics and want something with bite give this a try. You will come back or it will come after you! This is how a super hero team comic was meant to be! Title: Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes # 16 Publisher: DC Writer: Mard Waid Penciler: Barry Kitson Onker: Mich Gray Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.00 Can Rating: 2 out of 5 stars Comments: The Legion is shown as a bunch of smart mouthed brats. They have no respect for others. They are a gang of punks. These Legionaires are so disrespectful and childish, they all deserve a good spanking, this group of Legionaires does. Well Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl do seem more mature of course they were just told the Earth is going to be destroyed. As the behemoth hurtles towards Earth the Legion acts as a team to slow it down. But its Supergirl who saves the day. She is drawn impressively. What does Supergirl mean that she is dreaming the LSH, that they don't exist? Cosmic Boy plans to step down as leader so a new leader can be elected. He was being written so well as the leader. Now that will change. It should be great to see Brainiac 5's new HQ. But if the issues with Supergirl in them don't exist why should we bother reading about this non existant Legion of Super-Heroes? Title: New Avengers # 17 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Penciler: Mike Deodato Jr. Inker: Joe Pimentel Price: $ 2.50 US, $ 3.50 Can Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Comments: The Avengers look fantastic just getting out of the Quin Jet. Luke Cage is in charge of this assignment of Impact Super-Hero work. The Avengers show up in a bad part of town and just stand there. Their presence is there to scare away any criminals. The Avengers get a call and they are off. The humanoid creature they go to confront is shown as a powerhouse. He has strength, speed and power. Iron Man engages him in conversation and is starting to get through when Ms Marvel grabs him. She can absorb energy and she does. She absorbs all of this creature of energy. The story though needed more energy in it. It needed to draw you in more. Ms Marvel does look cool with all that fiery energy in her. She is just bursting with power. Title: Annihilation: Prologue # 1 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Keith Giffen Inker: Ariel Olivetti Price: $ 3.99 US, $ 5.75 Can Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Comments: Since this is a cosmic adventure of course Thanos makes an appearance with Death and a little fairy creature. Drax the Destryer is now smarter. He also has a female companion. He certainly is completely different from the dumb muscle bound likeable guy he used to be. Nova is with tons of other members of the Nova Corps. Nova is being treated like a newbie. The energy is overwhelming the Corps. These bug like enemies and their ships are impressive looking. They have a menacing appearance. Nova shows his ingenuity as he leads the attack. Afterwards as he sits amidst the ruins his desolation comes through as the Corps is no more. As you read about the Nova Corps it does remind you of the Green Lantern Corps. The bug ships and their crews seem strangely familiar. If your paying attention you'll figure out who is behind the attacks before they show you. The universe should tremble and it will. Annihilation is apon us! Title: Amazing Spider-Man # 530 Publisher: Marvel Writer: J. Michael Straczynski Penciler: Tyler Kirkham Inker: Jay Leisten Price: $ 2.50 US, $ 3.50 Can Rating: 2 out of 5 stars Comments: Iron Man has a new secretary, Spider-Man. He is on Tony's payrole and does whatever he is told. The role of subordinate does not seem right for him. He is written comfortably into the role here though. Now we get a page full of "Editor's Notes" and they are great. Its so funny as the editors talk back and forth. You'll smile and laugh as you read it. More improvements to Spidey's suit. Now it can change styles and colors. It has a camouflage setting. Also he now has four thin metal arms on the back of it. The focus is to much on the costume and its abilities instead of on the person in it and their abilities. Tony and Peter go to Washington to convince the politicians not to enact a super human registration act. With so many super heroes identities already public knowledge like the FF, She-Hulk, Hulk, Wasp, X-Men and also with Black Widow, Captain America, Spider-Woman working for S.H.I.E.L.D. are there really that many that are not known already? Is such an act necassary? The Titanium Man is looking dangerous. Spidey protects Tony thats part of his job. Spidey looks good taking on the Titanium Man. The new costume does have a sleek up-to-date look for both Spidey and the Titanium Man. The action though is slow paced. Spider-Man should be featured more in his own comic. Title: Evil Ernie In Santa Fe # 4 Publisher: Devil's Due Writer: Alan Grant Artist: Tommy Castillo Price: $ 2.95 US Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Comments: The Black Magic Cult is performing a ritual to raise the demon Zabudel, the leader of the cult must scarifice his own daughter to do so. Ernie is enjoying killing the bad guys. He has changed a lot. He is a much better person only killing dozens and only torturing to death evil people. There is an atmosphere of quiet evil lurking throughout these pages. Ernie and Smiley are presented as a team working in sympatico. They both enjoy mutilating people. The art has a nice pastel appearance in the colors. Carsten Bradley is the colorist. Ernie's glowing eyes and rib cage surrounded by darkness give him an eerie look. Ernie is still a psycotic killer just he is toned down so much. His basic character is still there just its buried so deeply now. Ernesto needs more killing in his life. Title: Purgatori # 5 Publisher: Devil's Due Writer: Robert Rodi Artist: Cliff Richards Price: $ 2.95 US Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Comments: Purgatori moves through the night a hungry vampire out for vengence. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. She plans to destroy her Queen's Kingdom and all those within it will suffer. Purgatori's evil nature not just her blood red skin but her outlook is what has changed the most. She was a slave girl to the Queen, now she cuts the Queen's head off. The art has Purgatori to much in shadows. Yes she is a vampire going out at night. But still sometimes you should be able to see all of her. The ending is strange and not explained at all. You have no idea what is happening. The Egyptian Gods are well drawn. Why are they so worried about this vampire? She does revel in the destruction she causes. Do the Gods fear she might cause their destruction? This Purgatori just might be able to bring down the Gods should she so choose. She is sexy, dangerous and very deadly. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] GONE AND JUST ABOUT FORGOTTEN BARBIE is who most people think of today when they speak of the toy manufacturer MATTEL. But originally the company had a spokesperson character, one with his own television show. MATTY MATTEL was a cartoon character who is seen today on old toy packages, but in 1959 he hosted his own Sunday night prime time cartoon show, MATTY'S SUNDAY FUNNIES, showing old Famous Studio cartoons of CASPER and the like. Three years later, the show switched to all new Bob Clampett BEANY AND CECIL cartoons. Matty was a short character with a crown and is best known for his slogan 'If it's Mattel, it's Swell!" _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [11] Multiverse Observer and Explorer Reviews Paul Dale Roberts Silhouet98@cs.com http://www.jazmaonline.com [Paul promotes amateur and professional comic book artwork, scripts, storylines, and unpublished comic books with a newsletter called the Peoples' Comic Book Newsletter. Its website is at Jazma Comic Book Newsletter Productions at http://www.jazmaonline.com/ He is also a prominent letter hack, as anyone who reads comic letter pages would know. He is in production of his own self-published comic book called The Legendary Dark Silhouette and has copyrighted over 600 characters for his Jazma Universe.] SPOILER WARNING: THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. MOE Sidenote: These are my comments on the latest issue of Comic Buyer's Guide #1617 - June 06: In regard to Comic Buyer's Guide #1617 June 06, I enjoyed your feature on V for Vendetta. I saw the movie and I was thrilled. This movie probably wouldn't have made the big screen if it had been featured right after 9/11. After 9/11 there was all of the hoopla of not showing the twin towers in any feature film, including the upcoming Spider-Man film during that time period. I never could understand the reasoning. Why take out the twin towers in any feature film, we need to remember 9/11 and by seeing the twin towers, it will remind us that we live in a world that is threatened by terrorism and that we must always be vigilant and on guard. Let me get off my soapbox and talk about V for Vendetta. The Wachowski Brothers proved themselves with Matrix and their vision for V for Vendetta hit the mark. Sure it may not be like the original concept of Alan Moore, but the story is still there in all of its glory. V is the ultimate anti-hero, you don't know if you want to cheer him or boo him. If futuristic England became a totalitarian conservative fascist state, would we truly glorify a terrorist like V. I wonder. Natalie Portman did a great job in portraying Evey. Natalie was dazzled by V's eloquent speech, politeness and being a gentleman in all of his splendor. Even when she noticed his burned hands, she didn't look away, she was compelled by his mystique and charm. The connection of V to Guy Fawkes via the mask makes the story even more intriguing, because there is that connection. A connection that lies deep in history. I wish Alan Moore wouldn't have a hands off approach to this movie, I would like to see the day he gives a nod of approval. It seems everyone is enjoying his creations on the silver screen, except Alan Moore. I know many people who loved The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and I was disappointed to hear some of the bad reviews. Critics can be a pain in the butt sometimes and Alan Moore seems to be his own worse critic. Alan Moore will always be Alan Moore, just keep on creating Alan, we love the stuff you churn out! As for Jim Johnson & John Petty's Obligatory Fight Scene in regard to Revolution on the Planet of the Apes, this comic book is not spectacular, but I am happy it exists. The ape story continues and I love the Planet of the Apes and I am delighted with this comic book and I hope it keeps going for a long, long time. You always learn something new in CBG and this time I was surprised to learn that the first crossover punch was delivered by DC and not Marvel with Challengers of the Unknown #48 and Doom Patrol #102, which was done in 1966. Ask Mr. Silver Age is filled with exceptional knowledge. That may have been the first crossover of the Silver Age, but I believe the first crossover of the Golden Age was Betty Boop and Popeye in a comic strip that was published in a Golden Age comic book - name unknown. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure of it. Hmmm. A thank you goes to Jeani Rector - horror novelist. Thank you for sending me the book The Ethereal Gazette - A Quarterly Showcase of Horror and Science Fiction! Your story Ghoul was fascinating and I see that many of the stories including yours would make good comic book fodder. Keep on striving! Paul Dale Roberts MOE Sidenote: Today stopped by A1 Comics and went through the A1 Comics Stargate and discovered these new and original realities: Book of Shadows #1 of 2 by Image; Dead World #3 by Image/Desperado; Jova's Harvest #3 by Arcana; Killer 7 by Capcom/DDP; Hector Sevilla & Mike S. Miller's Lullaby - Once Upon a Time by Alias; Pacify by Steven Perkins; Sea of Red - No Quarter Vol II by Image; Sullen Grey #3 by Drew Rausch; The Surrogates by Top Shelf; Tempest #1 by Alias; Twin Blades #1 by Alias; Yenny #3 by Alias; Zombie Tales - The Dead by Boom!; Marvel Romance Redux - Guys & Dolls #1 by Marvel Comics; Loveless #5 by Vertigo. Below are just a few comics I picked up with some pocket change..... Godland Book Eight/Nine by Image Comics: Reading Godland Book Eight and Nine, I would consider this the 'Godland Experience". Adam Archer looks stunned as he lets everyone know that he was confronted with the secret truth of creation. The universe is a very mysterious place and if one person was able to know the secret truth of creation, or the secret truth of evolution, or the secret truth of multiple realities, it would be hard for any mind to fathom. It's almost like the main character in Dan Brown's DaVinci Code, who discovers the secret truth of the coding and what DaVinci was trying to relate to the world via his paintings. Adam says he feels alone and perhaps he is alone, only in his knowledge that is not shared with the masses. But, as it is said that we are all connected, then perhaps the lonliness that Adam Archer feels will melt away. I've said this before, but I will say it again, I enjoy the Kirbyish artwork in this comic book and I love the bright and brilliant colors, that gives the comic book a dazzling look. I enjoyed the action scenes, especially with Eeg-Oh showing Supra his powers of meteor speed and then later doing a powerful display of spewing hellfire. Professor Xerses has his own problems, as he is told that the whole country can plunge into darkness. This comic book has a mystery around every corner and you always keep the readers guessing. Invincible #30 by Image: If Andressa wasn't getting so old, she would be one good looking praying mantis, I shouldn't be talking about the way she resembles a bug on a woman's body. Andressa really laid it on Mark and stuck to her point, that she doesn't have much time to live and that Mark's brother should be with him. She is looking out for the well-being of her son. Mark will have plenty to think about, one that his costume looks sort of feminine, even his friend William Clockwell thinks Mark is a bit on the gay side, which had me laughing so hard, I spewed out the latte I was drinking. Then Mark's purple little brother is the total rage and he's going to have a fun time having this little bro at his side. I don't consider Mark having the glamourous life, but nevertheless this is a fun story to read. It's like watching a reality show of the bizarre. After reading Invincible #30, all I can do is stay tuned for the next ish! Tales of the TMNT #21 by Mirage Publishing: The flying cow in the opening scene and the reference to 'got milk?' had me laughing at the start. Jose Rey spins a mythical tale on how the Earth was formed and how it is rooted to a turtle was quite fascinating. Just like our Greek, Roman and Norse myths when told or read seem too incredible to be true, but somewhere there is a foundation of truth and this story no matter how incredible it sounds, could be somewhat true. Tales of the TMNT #21 will be one of my all time favorites, especially since the TMNT are side-by-side with The Wild West C.O.W. - Boys of Moo Mesa. Cows and turtles, what a combination! The story almost shadowed The Wizard of Oz in some scenes and I like how things were focused on the shard that was once a piece of a comet, that helped create the world known as Moo Mesa. It's time for the cows and turtles to save the world and I enjoy observing this story from a safe distance! The Walking Dead #27 by Image: Cannibalism is a taboo subject. Right now, the History Channel has a couple of specials on cannibalism. What is disgusting about zombies is that they practice cannibalism on living breathing people. What I never could understand is why zombies don't eat their own kind, like other zombies? Is it because the flesh is already rotted? They don't like the taste? The nutrients are gone? What is worse? Zombies that are already dead and eat the flesh of living people, or living people like as shown in Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes or Sawny Bean and his 17th Scottish Clan that eat the flesh of people they have killed? The only difference is that the zombies are already dead and they attack, mutilate and eat the flesh of living people, while other cannibals such as Sawny Bean actually kill their victims first, then eat them. No matter what, it's a disgusting habit. The Walking Dead #27 gave me a few nightmares and I couln't help but feel sorry for Maggie, being in the reality that she is in and wanting some comfort like sleeping with her dad. Glenn is not back yet and Maggie can only feel confused and alone. Poor kid. After watching Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I have always been creeped out by small towns and in this story our heroes find themselves in a very small town...Woodbury, pop 1102 and soon as they arrived, the lights beam down on them and they are attacked by 'biters'. Shooting everywhere, I am surprised these people don't all lose their minds in this chaotic world. What an image, zombies being chained up, can you imagine walking past them and teasing them with your soft living flesh....yikes! Okay, I'm not sleeping tonight again! I am zombied out! Spawn #154 by Image: Spawn already lives in a world with bizarre events, but things get even more bizarre as vampires, zombies, werewolves and demonic possession become common place. I liked the way it was described, this event will be as big as a tsunami. Spawn is a very complex character, but he is even more complex when it is told that he has many beings inside of him. Spawn also is very opinionated and let's it be known that he does not favor heaven or hell and blames both realms for the misery they have caused on mankind. Like always the artwork is very graphic and the image of Emma-Lou was quite horrifying, especially seeing her eye destroyed in such a hidious way. Billy-Bob the zombie brought in some dark humor, as he complains that he can't even get drunk anymore. Spawn #154 was spectacular and spooky at the same time and like always I enjoy the original characters that are brought to the story. I enjoyed watching Kumiko take on the zombies and I loved the introduction to the very alluring Zera - Queen of the Seraphim, that is one awesome lady! Multiverse Observer and Explorer signing off until next time... _________________________________________________________________ Thanks for subscribing to the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine (CBEM) --------------------------->Disclaimer<--------------------------- This is an ANNOUNCE only mailing list, only the Editor can send messages to the list.
