Because of that some people have a three day weekend, some even four, depending where you are and who you work for. In Massachusetts and Maine the state celebrates Patriots Day. That is the day in our history that was fired the "shot heard 'round the world" at the start of the American Revolution. It is now celbrated as a Monday holiday but back in the day it was always the date from the poem: Listen my children and you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere. On the eighteenth of April in '75 It is also the day of the Boston Marathon, another excuse to give people the day off. Me, I have to work so I will go to New York where most peopl are working Monday. That's ok. For some strange reason my company decided to take a 4-day weekend on Memorial day weekend. I can wait. This week we have a special trivia contest. The prize will be donated by Angelo Furlan to promote his re-launch of SINNAMON with a three issue mini-series. And, to compliment that, you can read about issue #1 in my review this issue in my column, MY VIEW. I have always been a fan of Angelo's writing and M. Gerald Delany's art so check it out. And check out these new books if you haven't yet . . . This issue goes out on Good Friday. Long time readers know I am prone to mention these ocassions that are important, to me at least. When you have 1500 or so friends you correspond with every week you like to share these things. So, I wish you all a very Happy Easter, however you spend it. May our Jewish friends enjoy the Passover celebration. And, to my fellow Christians, celebrate Resurrection Day! Rejoice! He is not dead. He is risen! He will come again! This is live-streamed on the internet and podcast afterward. 1. Next show: In two Tuesday nights: April 25 (26). For this substitution of Susan Brown's overnight show, "Punk and Hardcore" I chat about comics with Howard Stangroom. Besides being a proprietor of 30th Century Comics in Putney, London, England, he was a contributing editor to two of my favorite fanzines, Comics Forum and Comics Focus. His most recent projects are the second edition of the Slings & Arrows Guide, Prime Cuts, Genus Male (two gay anthropomorphic stories in the latest issue), and the upcoming 'zine about comics for/by girls, Sugar & Spice. We'll spend a lot of time talking about comics and creators we like and why we like them and maybe we'll go into his contribution to the Star Trek mythos. Plus listener phone calls. 2. The last episode of 'Nuff Said! was on anime, manga and manhwa (Korean comics). My guests were from Central Park Media, who translate and distribute Japanese and Korean material in the U.S. You can hear it on the WBAI archives. Follow the link from http://www.comicbookradioshow.com/ra1.html. There are also links to hear the radio interviews I did with Will Eisner, Scott Roberts and Faith Hubley plus a link to David Bernstein. And some surprises. 3. The dvd version of 'Nuff Said! with exclusive interviews with Mike Kaluta, Mike Oeming, Sean Chen & Louis Small, Jr. will be in Diamond Distribution's May Previews. A free one minute sample of the dvd is posted on the web site in several formats so you can see it whether you have dial-up, a mac or a pc. It has a little of each artist interview. http://www.comicbookradioshow.com/dvd1samples.html 4. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] LET KING KONG HELP YOU TO A HISTORICAL DINING EXPERIENCE Right now on the stands, Hostess has Twinkies filled with Banana Creme as a tie in to KING KONG. You might want to try one, as they're also historical. When the snack cake debuted, they were filled with banana creme, which was unusual for the time, but inexpensive for the manufacturer. When WWII came around, bananas were hard to obtain, and Hostess went to the regular cream filling we all know. So getting one of these will let you experience how the original product tasted. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [4] Network Buzz News, gossip and rumors from the industry FXLabs to develop videogame based on Archie Comics Universe Seattle, Washington - April 10, 2006 FXLabs to develop videogame based on Archie Comics Universe FXLabs Studios announced it has signed an exclusive agreement with Archie Comics Entertainment for the development of the very first videogame based on the Archie universe. VISIT ALIAS ON MYSPACE NOW! +++++ From: Mitchell Senft <ms53@optonline.net> Aguirre-Sacasa: Playwright's Path Is via Comic Books By DAVID COTE At the New York Comic-Con in February, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa was treated to an object lesson in fame and anonymity. This 33-year- old comic-book writer went to the Comic-Con, a frenetic three-day orgy of comic books, video games and an appearance by the actress Milla Jovovich, to autograph his recent books for Marvel. But Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa, a relative newcomer, found himself seated next to Brian Michael Bendis, the prolific superstar behind "Daredevil" and the "New Avengers." "About 5 people came up to me, and I'd say 400 lined up for Brian," Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa recalled with a laugh. "I was, like, 'This is actually humiliating.' " It was a scene that Peter Parker would appreciate. Which is appropriate, since Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa is author of the spinoff series "Sensational Spider-Man," as well as "Marvel Knights 4." This month Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa's work will be on display again. His semiautobiographical comedy, "Based on a Totally True Story," opens on Tuesday at Manhattan Theater Club. It is a portrait of the artist as overextended dynamo, juggling romance, family and an unabashed pursuit of commercial success. He also has a short play in "Dread Awakening," a "Creepshow"-style anthology by various authors that runs through April 23 at the 45th Street Theater, while the Rattlestick Theater will present his 2003 alien-abduction drama, "Dark Matters," in October. "One of the best things that happened for me as a playwright is becoming a comic-book writer," said Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa, who was a devoted comic-book collector growing up in Nicaragua and Washington, and who likes his characters to have a theatrical bent. (In one issue, the Human Torch snags tickets to "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.") "When you tell people you're a playwright, their eyes sort of glaze over," he said. "But when you say you write the 'Fantastic Four' or 'Spider-Man,' they perk up. It's a touchstone that has gained more credibility as artistic expression." Certainly comic books are enjoying a pop-cultural primacy as never before, through big-budget movie adaptations, video games and television shows. Theater artists, on the other hand, command a much smaller audience. "One of my comics is read by more people - around 70,000 - than will see my entire run at Manhattan Theater Club," Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa said. "That puts things in perspective." Several of Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa's plays, which have generally received good reviews, draw on horror, science fiction and romance conventions as a way to sugarcoat his character studies and psychological dramas. Still, he would like to avoid being pigeonholed as Off Broadway's comic-book guy. In terms of new plays, he's trying to focus on less lurid, genre-driven scenarios. As it happens, Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa's family history is not without its own heroes and archvillains. His great-grandfather Juan Bautista Sacasa played a pivotal role in the Nicaraguan civil war in the 1920's and 30's and was kicked out of the presidency when Anastasio Somoza Garcia (his nephew) seized power. Now Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa's father, Francisco Aguirre-Sacasa, is running for president of Nicaragua in the November election. (Talk about the superhero as metaphorical father figure.) "If his campaign continues, I'll go down there this summer," Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa said. "It is, in fact, very hard for me to be in New York and not down there, and for him to be in Nicaragua and not here, in the midst of my big New York show. If it were anything other than this play, I would be down there. But we talk literally every night." Although Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa doesn't seem to have any genetic predisposition to run for public office, Nicaragua does figure into his work in progress, "Masaya" (a thriller about missing American backpackers in Nicaragua), which Second Stage Theater has commissioned. His "Based on a Totally True Story," directed by Michael Bush, follows the adventures of Ethan Keene, a charming young writer for DC Comics' publication "The Flash," who embarks on a serious affair with Michael, a journalist and novelist, at the same time that his play is optioned by a movie producer. Although nothing otherworldly takes place, the superhero metaphor applies neatly to his protagonist, Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa explained. "Ethan compartmentalizes his life, the way superheroes do with their secret identities," he said. "Once you start to put things into neat compartments, they want to break out." Comics-to-stage crossovers are becoming more common. (This month, The Brick will present "Adventures of Caveman Robot," a scrappy rock musical centered on an indie-comics figure.) The increasing credibility of the comic-book genre may be the reason. "Comic books straddle some odd lines; that makes them so appealing," said Gerard Jones, author of "Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters and the Birth of the Comic Book" (Basic Books, 2004). "There's still an aspect of junk culture about them. Yet now, you've got the literary elite playing with them in one form or another, like Chris Ware or Michael Chabon." Even with his success at playwrighting, Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa doesn't plan on giving up comics. "These characters existed before I was born, and they'll exist long after I shuffle off," he said. "I love the idea of writing these huge, bombastic characters; I'll stay in the superhero world as long as I can." +++++ Thanks for subscribing to the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine (CBEM) --------------------------->Disclaimer<--------------------------- This is an ANNOUNCE only mailing list, only the Editor can send messages to the list.
