----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] THAT'S HOW YOU CAN TELL IT HAPPENS IN THE FUTURE, DUMMY In the 1950's TV was scrambling for fodder. A German producer quickly made a cheap live action FLASH GORDON series, starring STEVE HOLLAND. Holland went on to much greater fame as the model for James Bama's DOC SAVAGE paperback covers. In the comic strip of FLASH and it's movie serials, it was made clear that Flash operated in the here and now. But for the Holland series, he was set in the far future. In one episode, Flash and Dale fought space pirates with a unique fashion sense. In a futuristic style, all the pirates wore their baseball caps backwards. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [10] Multiverse Observer and Explorer Reviews Paul Dale Roberts Silhouet98@cs.com http://www.jazmaonline.com [Paul promotes amateur and professional comic book artwork, scripts, storylines, and unpublished comic books with a newsletter called the Peoples' Comic Book Newsletter. Its website is at Jazma Comic Book Newsletter Productions at http://www.jazmaonline.com/ He is also a prominent letter hack, as anyone who reads comic letter pages would know. He is in production of his own self-published comic book called The Legendary Dark Silhouette and has copyrighted over 600 characters for his Jazma Universe.] SPOILER WARNING: THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Name: Ultimate X-Men #68 - Date Night: Part 3 Publisher: Marvel Comics Price: $2.99 Writer: Robert Kirkman Pencils: Tom Raney Inks: Scott Hanna Comments: I am glad this is an alternate part of the universe, which makes up the Marvel Universe; otherwise I would be confused as all heck. There is so much going on, from the Church of Shi'ar that has a group that worships a god called Phoenix, and the connection to the Hellfire Club. Not to mention that Elliot Boggs finds his parents murdered and he is the Hannibal Lector of mutants, because he is uncontrollable when it comes to his powers and they have to restrain him like Hannibal. Okay, I could go with the fact the Church believes the Phoenix is based on peace and self-improvement, but what made my jaw drop is the fact that the Phoenix may be part of the creation and that it is the Earth that imprisons the Phoenix! While I am getting self absorbed with the Phoenix myth, then Robert Kirkman throws in that Nighthawk's parents were killed by White Supremacists and he got himself into physical perfection to hunt these Supremacists down...well, the legend goes. Then I don't know what was the biggest mind-blower was...that in this alternate reality Nick Fury looks like Samuel L. Jackson with an eye-patch or that Sabretooth could be the son of Wolverine! Not since the time that Darth Vader proclaims that he is Luke's father was I so stunned! Ultimate X-Men #68 - Date Night: Part 3 staggers the imagination to unlimited boundaries! Name: Ultimate Spider-Man #91 Publisher: Marvel Comics Price: $2.99 Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Pencils: Mark Bagley Inks: John Dell Email: Ultimateoffice@marvel.com Comments: I am glad that Ultimate Spider-Man has that wit and sarcasm. He's still the Spider-Man I remember from the Silver Age. I enjoyed Spider-Man's remarks while he is tied down in the streets by Ringer. Ringer himself is a comedian of sorts and doesn't know it, as he brags that he is from Waldorf, Maryland and then Spider-Man snaps back...'I must have missed the memo, when was Maryland considered cool?" I busted up laughing...or should I just write these capitol letters...LMAO...or the regular LOL! Ringer is dangerous because his hoops can constrict, so if Kitty Pryde wasn't around, Spider-Man wouldn't be laughing so hard and saying that Ringer is playing with hula hoops. How funny in this alternate Marvel Universe, Spider-Man is considered as a mutant. But, in reality he is. When the radioactive spider bit him, it altered his genes, his genes mutated...henceforth he became a mutant in his own right. Question...why did the hula hoop guy say he was from Maryland, when his ID clearly shows he is from Medina County, Ohio? What's the story on that? I had to close my eyes between the love attraction between Spider-Man and Kitty Pryde and tell Spider-Man to put his shirt back on...geesh! I love the X-plane, a very cool Stealth, that probably has it's origins in Area 51. My hunch. Love the way Kitty Pryde phases in and out, those are some crazy powers! Ultimate Spider-Man #91 was a tremendously good read and someone needs to tell Aunt May that she is too old for mini-skirts...for criminy sakes! Who are the Borg at the end of this story? Name: Captain America #16 Publisher: Marvel Comics Price: $2.95 Creative Force: Brubaker, Perkins & D'Armata Email: MHeroes@marvel.com Comments: I love the way Crossbones makes like Rambo and Sin makes like Ultraviolet (from that recent movie with the same name). Sharon and Cap have an admiration for each other and a whole lot more, but I love the way Cap says he doesn't like the new SHIELD bosses and Sharon says that they are not thrilled with the New Avengers. That's something they can debate when they are mad at each other. Red Skull's daughter Sin is alluring in her own evil way; she's an eye-catcher that's for sure. Crossbones and Sin are like Bonnie and Clyde and Starkweather and his girlfriend combined as they go across country raising mayhem, havoc and confusion. Then the simple folks from Pilsburg are confused on why SHIELD is interested in a mere car wreck...boy, won't they be surprised to learn the truth, not since Roswell. While Cap is happy that Bucky is still alive...Bucky is playing H.G. Well's War of the Worlds.....ahh...Sharon and Steve kissy. Two little lovebirds sitting in a tree...K I S S I N G...well, you know how it goes...Captain America #16 was an excellent read this evening! MOE Sidenote: Hi this is Paul Dale Roberts aka the Multiverse Observer and Explorer. I asked the assistance of Private Investigator Edward Carnby who investigates the paranormal to assist me in telling you the reader, about some of the best horror, sci-fi, fantasy movies that are now out on DVD. You will probably recognize Edward Carnby, P.I. from the movie Alone in the Dark. Tonight, Ed and I will be watching Ultimate Avengers - The Movie and Dirty with Cuba Gooding Jr. Paul: Ed, before we go on, can you give us a review on Ultimate Avengers - The Movie? Plus, can you share the popcorn? Ed: Sure, I will give you some popcorn, but at least share the Cheeze-its. Well, Ultimate Avengers - The Movie is everything I expected and more! General Fury was a real take charge kind of guy. It was great seeing Tony Stark being the playboy that he is and getting set up by the Black Widow. I had some laughs when General Fury was explaining to Captain America that he thought that Thor had a few screws loose, since Thor thinks he is really the Norse God Thor. This movie was about a nuclear threat, aliens, Nazis and a rampaging Hulk. The battle scene between Hulk and Captain America and Thor was incredibly intense. Thor was a bit shocked when he saw Hulk actually pick up his hammer. Giant Man and Wasp had their disputes, since Giant Man was sort of jealous on the way Wasp looked up to Captain America. All in all, this is a great movie! What movie can you ultimately get The Avengers and SHIELD all rolled up in one! Paul: Well, Ed, we have a big list of movies for every comic book aficionado who likes horror, sci-fi and fantasy, here is just a few of the ones they can now find on DVD: Zathura, A Sound of Thunder (from the mind of Ray Bradbury), War of the Planets, The Visitation, The Fog, Undead, The Thing Below, Satan's Little Helper, Saw II (Yes, there will be blood!), King of the Lost World, Harvest of Fear, Headspace, Hammerhead, Hayao Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle, The Gingerbread Man, Eternal, Evil Breed: The Legend of Samhain, Dot.kill, Desperate Souls, Desert Punk: Enter the Desert, Dead Men Walking, Death Tunnel, The Dawn, Day of the Deadz: Contagium; Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, The Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion - The Witch and the Wardrobe, Blood of the Beasts, Bloodline, The Cave, Cerberus - The Guardian of Hell, Kangaroo Jack G'Day U.S.A., Walt Disney Sky High, Gargoyle - Wings of Darkness, Black Cadillac.....Ed: Paul, did you know that Black Cadillac was based on a true story? Paul: What? No way. Ed: Yes, the author of Black Cadillac was once terrorized on the road by a black Cadillac, which became a novel, then a movie. Paul: Okay, I will check this out, Ed, why don't you finish off named the movies. Ed: Okay, here are some more: D.E.B.S. (a fun spy movie), Bloody Mallory, The Backlot Murders, Bloody Reaper, Hatchet Man, The Ghosts of Edendale, Reign in Darkness, Scarecrow Gone Wild, Wishmaster - The Prophesy Fulfilled, Witches of the Caribbean, Zombiez, Vampires vs. Zombies, Stage Ghost, Toolbox Murders, Hide and Creep, Hollow Man (the story of H.G. Well's Invisible Man), Death Valley - The Revenge of Bloody Bill (I actually investigated this case), The Bunker, Werewolf Hunter (another supposed true story), The White Dragon, Zombie Honeymoon, The Witch's Sabbath, Peter Mervis - When a Killer Calls (remake of When A Stranger Calls - this one is okay, kind of hunky dory). Well, that's the scoop Paul. Let's watch Ultimate Avengers again, pass that popcorn! Paul: This is the life, okay you got it Ed. Multiverse Observer and Explorer signing off until next time.... _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] THE SECOND GUYS ALWAYS GETS LEFT OUT IN THE HISTORY BOOKS It's well known nowadays that BOB MIDDLETON was the first actor to portray SUPERMAN in live action, during his appearance at SUPERMAN DAY at the NYC World's Fair in 1940. But the name(s) of the second actor in the part are lost to history. MACY'S in New York did a fall and Christmas promotion with the character to promote the KRYPTO RAY GUN toy made by Daisy. Kids could pay an admission, and take part in a real adventure with Superman as they flew with the hero, were rescued from a cave in and received a DAILY PLANET newspaper at the end with their name in the headline. Macy's had a similar success with a BUCK ROGERS adventure a few years previously. But presumably all photos and names of actors portraying Superman are lost to history. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [11] My View David LeBlanc ComicBkNet@aol.com http://members.aol.com/comicbknet David LeBlanc is the Editor of the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine; which won the prestigious Eagle Award for Favorite Comic Book Ezine in 2001. SINNAMON: GRRL vs WORLD #1 (of 3) 28 pages, black & white, color cover, $2.97 Written and Lettered by Angelo Furlan Art by M. Gerald Delaney Cover by Bill Messner-Loebs catfish-comics@rogers.com Published by Catfish Comics Toronto, Ontario, Canada www.catfishcomics.com available from ComiXpress at www.comixpress.com First and foremost, Bill Loebs gets a royalty on every copy and it would be a good idea to buy a copy for his benefit. Where to begin? I have followed the adventures of SINNAMON from the start in 1994 and have waited five years for Angelo and M. Gerald to get back to her. There is a lot of neat stuff on the Catfish website including some background and preview pages so why note explore there before clicking the link that will take you to ComiXpress to order your copy of this latest adventure. As an aside, I did a Google of the word SINNAMON and among other things found, er, an adult entertainer shall we say. Just a coincidence. However, our heroine is one hot babe and so are most of her antagonists. M. Gerald is an excellent artist when it comes to the female form though his talent is not limited to good-girl poses. He has a good eye for composition and layout. All the characters are unique and consistent. He does focus mostly on the people using background detail only when it is needed. It makes a clean style, often with larger panels to stress a situation. What this story does is show you the story of Cindy Cannon now and before she became Sinnamon. I particularly like the flashbacks to her earlier days, as a brilliant student who decided she did not want to go to college. Much to her parents consternation she hooks up with a rock bank and even writes their songs: "I feel messed up. My life's in a rut! Don't cross me. I'll kick your butt!" Heh, heh! This sets up a series of events that lands her in a very special place called the Facility. As she remembers it, it was sort of a rehab to get her more in line with her parents idea of normal, though she was not a substance abuser. They gave her special vitamins and suddenly she became really strong. Or did she? In the present she is back in the Facility and has been told that everything that has happened she first she first got strong is a dream. They say she collapsed rather than get strong and has been in a coma for a year. All those adventures we loyal readers remember are dreams and with the meds they have Cindy on, she believes them. She is even seeing her arch enemy in miniature in a coffee cup! If that is not intriguing enough for you, wait until you see what the owner of the Facility has in store for a potential blackmailer! The series has been action packed and fun from the beginning. This new beginning allows new readers to get familiar with things that have gone before but it evens the playing field for those older readers because frankly, we don't know what to believe yet. It is a solid comic in story and art as I knew it would be. ComiXpress gives them an avenue to distribute the comic that was not available before. I am just glad to see an old favorite back in action. It has my stamp of approval. Netcomics www.netcomics.com Manhwa from South Korea for ages 13+ Also available online in episodic format. 0/6 ZERO/SIX (for ages 13+) January, 176 pages, black & white, 5X7.4", $9.99 by Youjung Lee This is a science fiction tale which for most young boys would be a dream come true. In fact it was in the movie and tv show, WEIRD SCIENCE. What if you were a nerdy high school boy (or maybe you are!) and received a sexy female android from your absentee father. At first she does not move but when she awakens he discovers her name is Six and she is there to protect him, he is the reason she exists. Now the most excitement he normally gets is running away from bullies, not always successfully. So you can imagine he might not be keen on drawing attention to himself with a taller female, not really dressed for attending high school. Sure enough she is true to her word when the bullies show up she takes them out easily. The scene at the school is more embarrassing. So what is behind the mystery girl? A scene at the end of this chapter shed some light on it all. The title does too. You see the boy, Moolchi, is the Zero in it. He also takes some pills and is starting to act very strange. There is some intrigue going on and it will get more violent as it goes. There is another, a female classmate with a crush on Moolchi. She shows up unannounced and see him collapse, only to be taken away by Six. She has problems of her own at home. The set up promises to move things at a fast pace. There is a bit of humor that lightens up the mood here and there. The art is decent in craftsmanship and structure. Not a bad start to a promising story. CAN'T LOSE YOU (for ages 13+) March, 192 pages, black & white, color cover, 5 X 7.09", $9.99 by Wann This is both romance and drama. Like 0/6 it involves a high schooler on their own. This time it is a girl, Yui, who rents a room in exchange for working in a store. Her mother is dead and dad is in debt. She has a plan to save anything she can until his debt is paid. But soon her life will turn upside down. She crashes into Lida, the daughter of an industrial executive and heiress to a huge fortune. They notice how much alike they look, it is uncanny. Later Lida decides to hire Yui to act as her double at various company functions she would rather not attend. The story is complicated by Lida's fiancee, Gaon Gil, another wealthy child who is not so keen on arranged marriages. He sees Lida as a pretty doll who gets whatever she wants, but he wants love. By chance he sees Yui and, mistaking her for Lida tells her off and then impulsively steals a passionate kiss. The effect is not what either expected. In her role as Lida's double, Yui is made up and given a wig so no one can tell the difference. What she does not know is that there have been threats on Lida's life. At the dedication of a children's home the would be assassin strikes and the ordeal brings Yui and Gaon even closer, though he believes she is Lida. Gaon has issues with his own family that may come into play. We wonder how he will feel if he learns who is playing the role of his fiancee. Who is out to kill Lida and what is her plan - does she want Yui to get killed? It is a good story both for the drama and the romance. The artist uses the big eye style often seen in Manga but reserves the cartoony bits to very few. It all works and is a decent package. I have not read a bad book yet from Netcomics. This one is one of the better ones. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] SOMETHING YOU NEVER SAW ON THE DISNEY VERSION DAVY CROCKETT was undoubtedly the first real hero craze produced by television, when Disney devoted three episodes to his life story in the 1950's. Yet, Davy Crockett was a real person and had his own history not shown on TV. In Jackson Tennessee, there is a plaque on the courthouse lawn. Crockett had been the congressman for the area and lost his last election to local resident Adam Huntsman. On the plaque are his words to the gathered crowd. "You can go to Hell, but I'm going to Texas." _________________________________________________________________ CBEM 571 concludes next message . . .
