Bob Burden hospitalized

A rash of health issues for cartoonists continues with news of
Bob Burden's hospitalization:

Just a quick note Bob Burden is currently recovering in the
Northside Hospital ICU from a stomach virus contracted visiting
New Orleans two weeks ago. He underwent surgery yesterday morning
if you could get the word out to fans to send cards and prayers
that would be must appreciated. Cards can be sent to

c/o Bob Burden get well wishes

Peachtree Drive

Burden is the creator of The Flaming Carrot and Mystery Men.

Bob is really more of a legend than a man, a man who spews
creations like most people discuss the weather. So send him a
get well card. We wish him the speediest of recoveries.
Comics legend Rich Johnston gets murdered in a CSI comics mini
series. Now that is what we call cool!

The investigation into "Who Killed Rich Johnston" begins this
August at IDW Publishing with the debut of the five-issue mini-
series "CSI: Dying In The Gutters" by writer Steven Grant and
artist Stephen Mooney. The suspects? Comic industry professional
you're all familiar with. In an attempt to scoop the scoop master
himself, CBR News spoke with IDW's Editor-In-Chief Friday
afternoon to get the dirt on this most unlikely of comic book
series

Parker announces TOTH book

Over at his blog, Jeff Parker talks about an Alex Toth project
he has in the pipeline

Okay, it's true. Though I've mentioned incessantly that I'm in no
big hurry to publish a book for a while (and thus have to fill
orders), I am going to crank up the OCTOPUS PRESS machine to
publish a collection of Alex Toth work. How could I not? This is
twenty years worth of doodles and sketches that Alex would send
to friend John Hitchcock (owner of the comics shop PARTS
UNKNOWN), and it's just fascinating to look through. So far,
probably only a few dozen people have ever seen this, so it's
time to change that. In a few weeks I'll squeeze in time to make
a web page for it, and then ask you kind people to spread that
link around. If there's any money after printing costs are
covered, most of it will be going to Toth, so I don't really have
any ad budget to speak of. But I think word of mouth will
actually do a lot, as that's how his reputation has spread over
the decades- he's an "artist's artist". Anyway, since people keep
writing and asking me, I feel I can step up and proclaim now that
I've sent off the solicitation to run in Diamond's June Previews.
Much more information coming!

Graphic Novel of Jewish Folk Tales
From Jewish Lights Publishing
 April 19, 2006
Jewish Lights Publishing will release The Adventures of Rabbi
Harvey -- A Graphic Novel of Jewish Wisdom and Wit in the Wild
West in August.  The 144-page 6" x 9" full color trade paperback
is a quirky retelling of Jewish folk tales, set in the old west.

The title character moves west in search of adventure to Elk
Spring, Colorado, where he outwits the gang that runs the town
and settles down as the town's rabbi, which allows him to settle
disputes, trick criminals into confessing, and offer unsolicited
bits of Talmudic insight.

Writer/artist Steve Sheinkin is writer and illustrator of the
Storytellers History series, a series of illustrated books for 4-
8th graders that tell stories from history.

This is the second day in a row that we've had news of a graphic
novel with religious themes (see "Papercutz to Publish Pope
Bio"), reflecting the increasing breadth of subject matter for
graphic novels as they expand into territory previously reserved
only for prose.

Virgin Gets CMO
Larry Lieberman New Chief Marketing Officer
 April 19, 2006
Virgin Comics and Virgin Animation (see "First Four Virgin
Comics") have named Larry Lieberman as the companies' new Chief
Marketing Officer.  In that position, he will run global
licensing, strategic marketing, publishing and advertising sales
divisions, and the companies' worldwide online and wireless
content initiatives.

Lieberman comes to Virgin from Forever Wild, a company he
founded in 2002 to do event marketing, production, and sales
promotions.  Prior to his time with Forever Wild, Lieberman had a
long career in the entertainment business, including stints at
Musicmaker.com, where he was president, global sales and
marketing; Comedy Central, where as VP-strategic planning and new
business development he launched global licensing ventures for
South Park and launched ComedyCentral.com; Warner Music Group,
where he was VP-marketing and artist relations; and MTV, where he
was director of merchandise marketing.

Papercutz to Publish Pope Bio
And Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew Box Sets
April 18, 2006
Papercutz has announced its August releases, and there are
several graphic novel products with strong commercial potential.
The product with potentially the broadest appeal is The Life of
Pope John Paul II, a 96-page color hardcover graphic non-fiction
work that will retail for $16.95.  It will carry an intro by His
Eminence Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, prefect of the
Congregation for Saints' Causes.

This new biography by Alessandro Mainardi (writer) and Werner
Maresta (artist) is not the first time a biography has been done
of this pope in comic book form.  In 1983, Marvel Comics
published a biography by Steven Grant and John Tartaglione in a
floppy format, which sold over 3 million copies.  Another comic
bio by Toni Pagot, which we haven't seen, is out there on the
Internet in trade paperback format but appears to be in dwindling
supply.

The Papercutz release will be the first hardcover presentation of
a John Paul II comic bio, and has the potential to sell well over
a long period of time.

Papercutz is also releasing box sets of its two flagship titles,
Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, in plenty of time for the holidays.
The Nancy Drew Boxed Set, which will include volumes 1-4 along
with a free Nancy Drew Computer Game from Her Interactive, will
retail for $29.95.  The Hardy Boys Boxed Set, also with four
volumes, will also retail for $29.95.  The books have been
selling very well as individual volumes (see "Nancy Drew Sells
Out"), and these value-priced sets will be great holiday
products.

Welcome back to another edition of ATR.

Last week's minor technical problem has now become a full-blown
catastrophe. Until my computer gets fixed, my internet access is
going to be limited. As it is, I have to write this week's column
on my buddy's computer.

[Ed's Note: Blair's tech troubles were not the cause of this

Greener Pastures

Some interesting details regarding the Marvel/Top Cow packaging
deal have popped up over at Millarworld. For starters, long time
Top Cow artist, Francis Manapul's exclusive deal is up and he
will not be a part of the Marvel deal. Early rumors have him
pegged for DC, but I've also heard that he will be working for a
French publisher in the near future. There's also a rumor that he
will be working with Jason Rubin (Crash Bandicoot) on a creator
owned book, which was first mentioned here last month.

Another popular Top Cow artist, Michael Choi has been dropping
hints about his Marvel assignment coming out of the packaging
deal:

Speaking of Marvel, we're a little closer to finding out
what our next project will be. If everything goes to plan,
people can expect:

a) Sonia and myself to do more covers,
b) Our return to Sara Pezzini to be sooner than we thought,
and
c) Our Marvel project to be very different, but very
similar to what we've been doing so far for Top Cow.

This Has A "Crossing Over" Factor of Seven Out of Ten Rro7

No More Living In The Green

There's word going around that the latest Swamp Thing series may
be facing cancellation due to low sales.

If true, that's really a shame. I've been enjoying the book.

This Has A "Holland Mind" Factor of Five Out of Ten

Life After Flight

I've heard an additional detail about 24/Seven, the upcoming
Image anthology coming out in July. Apparently it will be 200
pages in full color. And it won't be the only anthology coming
out from Image that month.

Mark Andrews (Colossus), Derick Thompson, Peter Sohn, Nate
Stanton, Ted Mathot and several other Pixar animators are
collaborating on Afterworks 2, which like 24/Seven will be 200
pages in full color.

The first Afterworks anthology (which was originally put out by
E-Ville Press) will also be re-released through Image in June.

This Has A "9 To 5" Factor of Nine Out of Ten

Speaking of Which.

As much as I'm looking forward to the new Image anthologies,
Flight 3 is still one of the summer's most anticipated projects.
Kazu Kibuishi and crew have the added advantage of coming out
through Ballantine Books. Which, in of itself should draw in new
readers.

This Has A "Bolt City" Factor of Ten Out of Ten

Love That Lovecraft

And now, for our third anthology item this week (that's got to be
some kind of record), an early look at John Rogers (Blue Beatle)
and Andy Khun's (Marvel Team Up) story from Boom! Studios'
forthcoming Cthulhu Tales. Their story is called "Quality Time"
and features the dreaded "Great Old One" exerting his influence
over. a school play?

This Has A "Heed The Call" Factor of Seven Out of Ten

Princes of The Universe

Look for Dynamite's Highlander ongoing series to start up in
July. The writers attached are Michael Oeming & Brandon Jerwa,
with Lee Moder (Painkiller Jane) on art. For now, the focus of
the series is said to be on Connor MacLeod, Christopher Lambert's
character from the original movies. But it seems likely that
Duncan MacLeod (from the Highlander TV series) will get his time
in the spotlight as well, given that Adrian Paul just finished
shooting a new Highlander movie.

There's never been a more convincing argument for spandex as a

For The Girl Who Has Everything

Over at his blog,
http://kingofbreakfast.livejournal.com/2006/04/14/
Paul Dini has been sharing his thoughts on his last animated DCU
story, the Supergirl centric episode of JLU, Far From Home, which
made its US debut last night.

In other news, Paul's wife (and professional stage magician)
Misty Lee, will be making her Los Angeles debut next month.

The Beaver Is Back

Earlier this week, Freshmen writer, Hugh Sterbakov left the
following post on his message board:

Freshmen II will be a Top Cow book. We're a go.

I don't have any more details yet. There will be a press release
in a few days, but it's not likely to have any details beyond a
quote from Seth and myself.

Leonard has gone exclusive to Marvel, so we're unfortunately
going to have to venture forth without him. Like we did the first
time, artists' names are starting to be bandied about and we'll
come up with a list and see who is interested and what their take
will be. All we can hope for is to find someone as enthusiastic
and talented as Leonard to join our crew.

Dunno for sure how many issues we'll do yet, but it will be
another miniseries. No less than six issues, no more than eight.
I've got the basic story, but I haven't started figuring out how
to break it down into issue segments yet.

News will break here first!
Sterbakov goes on to mention that an October or December launch
is expected for the new miniseries. Also of note, Sterbakov's
original post confirms the rumor of Leonard Kirk's new exclusive
deal with Marvel, which we reported here three weeks ago.

This Has A "Choke Your Robot Chickens" Factor of Eight Out of Ten

More Strangeness

And finally this week, a quick look at the work of incoming
Strange Girl artist Nick Stakal, who takes over as of issue 10.
Enjoy.

And that's a wrap. Though I do want to mention that my SBC mail
account is still working, so please keep sending your tips to
blairm@silverbulletcomicbooks.com. I appreciate them all and
could really use the assist while I'm having computer issues.

Thanks. and have a Happy Easter!

http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/ which are all rumors

Rich heard rumors . . .

From Avatar this summer. "Lady Death/Shi." By Brian Pulido, Billy
Tucci and Juan Jose Ryp. Also from Avatar this summer, returning
from its stint at Image, "More Than Mortal."

"Gun Theory" was a book by Daniel Way for the Epic Line,
remarkably a creator owned series for Marvel that saw print, but
also cancelled only a couple of issues in. Well, it's back as part
of a self published line from Ten Terrific Daniel Way, called Bad
Press. It will be accompanied by two other titles, "Stanko Gets
The Ladies" with artist Nick Dragotta ("X-Statix: Dead Girl") and
"Heavier Than God" with artist Ken Knudtsen ("My Monkey's Name Is
Jennifer"). "Gun Theory" will also be co-published by Oddgod Press

In a now deleted thread on the Bendis Board, an alleged private
AOL transcript with Fabian Niceza was posted by 'higgins4',
revealing plans for "Deadpool" during the "Civil War" crossover:
deadpool will be first in line to go hunt renegade heroes. he
doesn't need to "register." his identity is publicly known.

"Savage Dragon" #128. A crossover with Top Cow's "Wanted" series.

"Blood Of The Demon" has been cancelled with issue 17, it seems.

                                            richardv@sympatico.ca

Marlin Shoop artist on "G.I.Joe: America's Elite" from Devil's
Due interviewed by Richard Vasseur www.jazmaonline.com

RV: How would you describe your art style?

MS: Hmmmm, I would say a bit modern classic realistic, if that
makes any sense...

RV: Do you have any favorite characters to draw?

MS: I would have to say Superman.  That is my career goal is to
draw the Man of Steel.

RV: What do you like about this comic?

MS: It has been fun drawing my childhood characters as Snake Eyes
and Storm Shadow!

RV: Would you like to work on any other Devil's Due titles if so
which ones and why?

MS: Hack/Slash or any Dungeons and Dragons.  Why not!  Hack/Slash
is fun characters to draw, and Dungeons and Dragons is just a
given!  hehehe

RV: What first got you to start drawing?

MS: My Mom, she had gotten me started very young.  I drew
everything from my action figures to my little sister.  Artistic
talent runs throughout my Mom's side of the family.  I took it
to the next level by making money at it.

RV: Do you have any formal training?

MS: I attended Joe Kubert's School of Cartoon and Graphic Art and
Savannah College of Art and Design.  I got the best of both
worlds!  I also mentored under Bart Sears for a while.  I guess
he had seen potential in me and took me under his wing.  He would
set up appointments at every convention he would attend to show
me the ropes, making me a better artist and storyteller.  Bart,
if you are reading this, Thanks!

RV: How did you come to work at Devil's Due?

MS: A guy I met at Wizard World LA passed by my table and saw a
pin-up I had done with Hack/Slash, that was actually used on
Ain't it Cool News when they announced the movie for it, and
mentioned if I knew Tim Seeley.  I told him I knew of him, just
not personally, but he did.  He said I should email Tim and see
if he needs any artists on Hack/Slash, so I did.  And the rest is
going on as we speak!

RV: Have you worked on any other comics?

MS: I have worked on Decoy for Penny Farthing Press, a story with
B. Clay Moore.  I am also working on a graphic novel for Platinum
Studios and two other projects that are in the works, will
announce soon.

RV: Who has inspired you most in life?

MS: My wife, Cyndi, she has pushed me to my limits and continues
to push me.  If it wasn't for her, I probably wouldn't be in the
industry.  I would still be working at Denny's, or Home Depot!
For that, she is a big inspiration and my support system.

RV: What artists do you admire?

MS: There are a few, Joe Kubert being one, to me; he is one of
the best storytellers to date.  Others would be Alex Toth, Neil
Adams, John Buscema, Mike Zeck, Brian Stelfreeze, Adam Hughes and
Marc Silvestri.

RV: If you could have one super power what would it be and why?

MS: I would say to control time, I can draw as long as I want and
still make deadline!

RV: What advice do you have for up and coming artists?

MS: Practice, patience and perseverance, the 3 P's, it's like
what my Dad would tell me, "A man plants a Bamboo tree and waters
it for seven years, during the seventh year, it starts to grow
after 30 days.  Does it grow during the seven years, or the 30
days?"  Patience really is a virtue.  Meet the right people and
keep putting yourself out there, you will get noticed, it will
take time, but it will happen.

RV: How can someone contact you?

MS: email is the best way to get a hold of me, and my cell phone,
but I am not handing out my cell number.  HA HA HA but email
address is mshoop@gmail.com  I also am having a website
built, hopefully it will be up and running by June!

RV: Any last words of advice?

MS: Don't pee in the wind and don't eat yellow snow!  Pass it
along!
