SON OF M #5

Reviewer: Robin Lewis, lucillerobin@aol.com
Story Title: Everything Falls Apart (Part 5 of 6)

A loving family reunion.

Written by: David Hine
Artist: Roy Allan Martinez
Color Artist: Pete Pantazis
Letters: Dave Lanphear
Assistant Editors: Schmidt, Lazer & Sitterson
Editor: Tom Brevoort
Editor In Chief: Joe Quesada
Published by: Marvel Comics

Among the seemingly unco-ordinated follow-up stories to House of
M, David Hine's Son of M has been a welcome shot of well-planned
and consistent competence. Pietro has gotten his first decent
story in years, and the effects of last summer's crossover has
given new life to his character. His new powers are somewhat
difficult to comprehend, but his actions have been entirely in
keeping with the arrogant, selfish, self-deluding old swine from
old. He's given his daughter the rather dubious present of powers
derived from the Terrigen Mists, and has proclaimed to anyone he
can find on Genosha that he has the means to return the mutant
giftfs that M-Day stole. Of course, since he's on Genosha, a
certain family member has heard of this new-found altruism, and
is less than pleased to hear of it.

We don't get that confrontation first, however. No, Pietro has to
convince the cast of Claremont's old Excalibur book that the
Mists are just what they've been looking for. Rather than tell
them straight that the Mists return your powers, but possibly not
the way you wanted, he simply lies about it, and pretends that
his new time-travelling is merely his old speed taken to the nth
degree. It's a measure of how much Quicksilver's willing to lie
to himself that he's prepared to deceive these poor saps into
taking the mists. If they recognise the dangers in the process
they might refuse, which wouldn't fit in with Pietro's picture of
himself as the one-man saviour of mutantkind. After the awful
ruin he made of the world in House of M he's desperate to redeem
himself and simultaneously regain the thing that made him
special, and this car-crash of an attempt to do so is his best
chance. It doesn't matter if things don't work out quite right,
the mutants have to take the mists, or Pietro is going to be left
as the guy everybody in the Marvel universe hates. Pietro's ego
is far to large to stand for this. Better to lie to everyone and
let them take the Mists, then worry about the consequences later
when they're building statues of him.

Of course, things don't turn out that way. The title may have
given the game away: 'Everything falls apart' doesn't sound too
promising. Magneto comes a-calling, though without his powers
Quicksilver has no trouble in returning the same loving care
Magneto once bestowed on him. The actual confrontation with
Magneto goes about as happily as you might expect, but Hine gets
over the mixture of hatred and childish delight in finally being
able to overpower his own father that Pietro's feeling. And while
Magneto recovers we get a better idea of what Luna's new powers
entail. Sort of. Well, we get a little more of an idea, anyway.
They seem vague enough for Hine to figure out the actual
parameters later, though by the looks of the last page in this
issue they may be a bit more offensive than we've been led to
believe.

Since he stole the Mists the Inhumans have been unsurprinsingly
anxious to get them back. The fact that Crystal and Pietro's
daughter has gone missing at the same time as the theft occured
doesn't help matters. We finally get an explanation for Videmus'
aiding and abetting of Pietro's theft, and it feels less bizarre
than it might. His points about the insular life of the Inhumans
aren't entirely without justification, though Blackbolt obviously
disagrees. This issue Hine also chooses to bring in another
element to the story: the government. The Inhumans want their
mists back, the mutants are probably willing to risk the side-
effects to get their powers back, and Magneto wants his son to
stop messing around with things he's well-aware are too dangerous
to distribute like free candy. The government, however, is
understandably happy that mutants are dropping like flies all
over the world, and under no circumstances want there to be a
sudden resurgence thanks to Pietro's stolen Mists. I'm not sure
that dropping in a shadowy government team with their own designs
on the Mists isn't cramming one too many plot-points into the
story seeing as how we've only one issue left, but things have
worked out pretty well so far, so Hine gets the benefit of the
doubt.

This has been an impressive series. Martinez works wonders on the
page (his delicate linework and slightly strange faces are
perfect for the Inhumans, though at one point Blackbolt's torso
looks to have shrunk in the wash), and Hine's ideas for
Quicksilver feel perfect for the character. Pietro is due to turn
up in X-Factor somewhere down the line, re-uniting most of the
team that made up Peter David's excellent first run on the title
many moons ago. I'm not sure how, or indeed if, David's going to
try an rehabilitate the character to the extent that he can join
a regular team (in as much as X-Factor is a regular team), but
hopefully he'll be building on the sterling work that Hine's done
for the character here.

NEW X-MEN # 25

Story Title: Crusade (Part 2 of 4)

"Uh... shouldn't you be screaming in pain?"

Writers: Craig Kyle and Chris Yost
Pencils: Paco Medina
Inks: Juan Vlasco
Colours: Brian Reber
Letters: Dave Sharpe
Production: Kate Levin
Assistant Editor: Sean Ryan

Published by: Marvel Comics

A lilac haired teenager once said that the only time we ever get
to be happy in life- like one hundred percent blissful- is when
we're little kids because we're too stupid to know how worried we
should be. It could be argued that she was being overly cynical,
but after the events of last month's issue the New X-Men would
not be among those. They just saw 42 of their former class mates
killed, buried 15 of them. The world is no longer a safe and
sunny place, not in any stretch of the imagination. In the face
of all this hostility there are only two things the teenagers can
do; adapt or die. or as Logan is wont to say: get busy living or
get busy dying.

This issues kicks off from the very first panel with a good old-
fashioned, fast-paced and long awaited punch-up. The fight,
though one-sided, is incredibly enjoyable and exciting. For the
first time in a long time we actually get to see the battle (and
not just snap shots thereof) and it's fun to see these foundering
first steps of the team that will save guard mutantkind's
tomorrow. That is, of course, assuming that they survive to see
that tomorrow themselves and given this, their first showing that
is not necessarily a given.

Refreshingly, there was no loss in character exploration merely
because the panels where being devoted to action and not angst.
Laura continues on as a stone-cold killer, Santo as a clueless
moron. Josh wrestles with the ineffectualness of his powers as
Noriko struggles with the burden of leadership. Julian continues
to work against Norikio and to take his further teammates with
him while Sooraya and Cessily prove that the battlefield is
really not their place at all. With all this impotence,
incompetence and infighting one really has to wonder what Miss
Frost was thinking when she put these 7 on the same team.

One might be scared that all the attention to action and
characterisation would come at the expense of story progression,
but this is not the case. Mystery after mystery is made juicier
and juicer as the writers drown each with a healthy dollop of
intrigue. Just what happened to Jay all those months ago? What is
up with Josh? What was Emma thinking? Who was the Omega Level
threat? What is Reverend Stryker playing at? And what is his next
move going to be? Or to use the words for next month's
solicitation: who's next? Some of these are answered, others are
left hanging, but no matter the status of each individual subplot
the overall effect just leaves the reader wanting. nay, needing
more.

Medina is proving a brilliant replacement for Mark Brookes. While
he seems to struggle with wide-angle shots, his mastery of the
battlefield and the close-up more than make up for this. He seems
to have no problem switching btw extremely physical scenes, those
which focus on the emotional impact and those the point of which
we are not yet sure. Aesthetically, the book is an enjoyable read
and the simplicity with which it reads belies the extreme skill
that must have been necessary for it to be so. Though this is
clearly a joint effort because whenever Medina changes gears,
Brian Reber's colours switch seamlessly with him. They are an
amazing artistic pairing that has succeeded in making lavender
and electric pink into two of the creepiest colours on the
pallet.

This is a brilliant book which manages to deliver 2 shocking
revelations which cannot fail to make an impact. The first will
deliver a Colossus strength punch to the gut of any fan of the
original run and the second will deliver complete pandemonium and
have the Scientists and the Creationists at each others' throats.
Like a line of coke, this book will leave you a buzz and
desperately crazing the next hit; for the first time in a long
time, 30 days is simply too far away.

Title: Pulling Strings: The First Foursaken Part 1

It's the end of everything.

If you were to ask someone who is a fan of the X-titles who is
the best writer of them of all time, the one person that is most
likely to be said is Chris Claremont. He is best known for
writing or co-writing such great storylines as 'Days of Future
Past' and 'Dark Phoenix Saga' and at least has had a part in
creating many characters that continue to survive in the X-titles
today such as Shadowcat, Captain Britain, and Mystique. However,
the quality of his writing in Uncanny X-Men lately has been
fluctuating between the level he has been at before, and
mediocrity. The beginning of this latest story, which focuses on
Psylocke, another character he has created, is closer to the
latter though, with some help from Tony Bedard, the current
writer of Exiles, as he recovers from recent health problems.

Fortunately, Claremont's characterization per se hasn't taken a
hit despite the changing quality of his recent writing. From the
'watch-dog' attitude of Valerie Cooper and the people of the
Office of National Emergency (O*N*E) to the wacky insanity of
Jaime Braddock, he manages to keep the personality of the
characters as we currently know them in check and not have them
do anything that goes beyond what is normally expected. I also
like the fact how O*N*E is shown as a small part of the storyline
and not simply mentioned as an afterthought or forgotten as I've
seen some writers in the other X-titles have. Another thing I
appreciated is the brief glimpse of Storm's actions in Africa,
since I fear she may be ending up as a cast member of Black
Panther with her SPOILERS! impending wedding to him, but it's
good to see that Claremont hadn't forgotten her, even though it
wasn't needed to help the storyline at all.

The only thing that I didn't like about this particular issue is
that it left a lot of unanswered questions with regards to
SPOILERS! the reasons behind Jamie's resurrection of Psylocke .
While I do understand the reasons behind this is to get readers
excited about the next issue, especially since this looks like
the storyline that will SPOILERS! take Psylocke out of the X-Men
and onto the Exiles , I still thought there were too many
questions left unanswered such as SPOILERS! why Jamie decide to
resurrect Psylocke and make her the 'weapon' against the
Foursaken and who the Foursaken may be . Despite the unanswered
questions, I admit that I am one of the readers that I mentioned
earlier who is definitely eager to see how the rest of the
storyline unfolds as well as when and if any of the unanswered
questions that I have will be answered.

The art from Chris Bachalo maintains the high standard that I've
seen him reach before. However, with this particular issue, there
are a few 'misses' in terms of the artwork like when SPOILERS!
Jamie gets grabbed, presumably by the Foursaken and Bishop tries
in vain to get him for example. Also, I think that there was too
much ink usage in various places in the issue, maybe due to the
fact that there were EIGHT inkers on this, something I hadn't
seen before. There were a couple of instances where the
characters, and not just the women, looked like they had at least
two or three shades of dark eye-shadow around their eyes.

Overall, despite the many questions that this issue brings, I
feel it definitely is well-written and shows how well Claremont
is able to write. I am also glad for the fact that this
particular storyline will answer all the questions regarding
Psylocke's resurrection, even though this will be SPOILERS! the
last time we see her in Uncanny X-men like I had said earlier. .
However, I really can't give a full opinion on this storyline
until I see the conclusion of it.

AURORA is famous for their series of Monster and later Super Hero
model kits.  In the mid 60's, they looked into doing two
"diorama" style plastic kits of SUPERMAN.  One would show the
hero rescuing Lois Lane from a railroad track; the other would
have him stopping a bank robbery.  They also considered model
kits based on THE RIDDLER, THE JOKER and SUPERGIRL. A 1950's
design of TARZAN wrestling a lion was turned into a HERCULES
model when negotiations broke down.

OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Name: Flare #33 May 2006
Publisher: Heroic Publishing
Price: $3.25
Website: www.heroicpub.com
Multiple Creators.
Comments:  In this exciting issue you meet Hector Andros aka Sky
Marshall.  He tells a story of alien invasion.  This is a very
strange issue, because you have alien gorillas, alien sharks and
even an alien octopus, they want to control the land and
waterways of Earth.  The gorillas will take over the land and the
sharks will take over the oceans.  You have King Oook, leader of
the alien gorillas and he talks of intergalactic war.  The shark
race and the gorilla race look over Earth and it looks good for
conquering.  The aliens think of humans as insane hairless
gorillas.  You will learn that Flare at one time wanted to marry
Hector Andros, they had a hot love affair going on, but Hector is
too busy for Flare's proposal of marriage.  Flare #33 is Jaws
meets Planet of the Apes.  In this issue you get: "A Sound of
Distant Wonder - A Sparkplug Adventure".  Artwork is brilliant
colors and high clarity.

Name: Liberty Girl #0 June 2006

Comments:  In this issue, Liberty Girl assists the police.  The
police and public refer superheroes as 'supers'.  Liberty Girl is
over 50 years old and looks good and the police officer has a
hard time believing this is actually Liberty Girl.  In a bank
robbery gone awry, Liberty Girl gives the robbers a choice.
Surrender hostages or die.  The bank robbers can hardly believe
what she just said.  Psyche can fly and she has a temporary force
field that she can put up to surround her body.  She uses Pyscho-
organic energy.  You get an added treat with this comic book:
"Flare vs. the Tigress" story.  Artwork is brilliant colors and
high clarity.

Name: Witchgirl Inc.> Psyche #3 April 2006
Publisher: Heroic Publishing
Price: $3.25

Comments:  This is a story of racism.  You will find talk of
infidels.  Infidels are people of mixed blood.  Bad talk and
threats are part of the rhetoric of a fanatical racist.  The
racists believe that infidels will threaten humanity.  Rose - one
of the main characters of this story, says that her spider sense
is tingling, referring to Spider-Man.  So, that means the Heroic
Universe is some way part of the Marvel Universe, since their
character acknowledges the existence of Spider-Man.  A lot of the
scenes are of London, I have been to London and enjoyed the
scenes from Big Ben to Picadilly Circus.  The racists use a type
of Nazi symbol for their organization and when the racists are
around, a devil appears in the atmosphere above them.  With "A
Black Enchantress Adventure - On the Waterfront" the Black
Enchantress has a "Pink Panther - Inspector Clouseau"
moment with some ninjas that is quite comical.  Artwork is
brilliant colors and high clarity.

Name: Retribution
Publisher: Creative Elamentz
Price: $4.95
Written by: Vin Varvara
Art by: Mike C. Phillips
Email: Howler121@Netzero.com
or Jjeop@webtv.net
Comments:  Retribution is Crow meets Marvel's Zombie.  Think
back comic book fans, when Marvel had their Zombie comic book
out.  Anyway, if you were a fan of Marvel's Zombie or a fan of
Crow, then you are really, really going to love Retribution!  I'm
not going to give the full story away, but will tell you bits and
pieces of the story.  In the beginning there is a damsel in
distress, and she is taken away by some thugs.  Yes!  She is
being kidnapped and one of the thugs says if she doesn't shut up,
he's going to gut her!  This all takes place in New Orleans, then
there is a scene shift to the holy land of Jerusalem.  A man says
he had a dream to find a certain artifact.  Then you as the
reader are trying to figure out how New Orleans connects to
Jerusalem.  There are many twists and turns in this exciting,
intriguing and mystifying story!   You will learn about Zynth, a
drug used for zombification process.  The hero Retribution is one
scary hero, I mean I wouldn't want to run into him in a dark
alley.  He has a very unusual mask and outfit.  There is a group
out in New Orleans that is creating mindless zombies for slaves.
Retribution when he goes after the bad guys, does not hesitate
in doing some beheadings.  Retribution was once a victim of Zynth
and now takes retribution on the people that have ties to this
drug.  Retribution is a mystery, he has arcane powers in which he
can heal himself.  You will learn of the secret society of Loa.
Retribution can use his powers of inner vision.  There is a
showdown at St. Louis Cemetery that makes the OK Corral look tame
in comparison.  Back to Jerusalem, the artifact is a black book.
This is no ordinary black book, this black book causes a huge
explosion.  The book is called the Talzon and it was written by
Satan himself and whoever is in possession of this black book
gains incredible dark powers.  Added treats to this huge graphic
novel.  Yep, I said graphic novel and it is only selling for a
mere $4.95, you can't beat that with a stick!  Anyway, the added
delights are an interview with Vin Varvara, the writer of this
story.  The interview is conducted by Jemir and it's a fun read.
You also get Excerpt from the Journal of the Houngan Re: Talzon
Subheading: Dead Dawn.  You also get a ton of cool sketches!  The
artwork is filled with clarity and runs smooth with the story.
If I were to look in Webster's Dictionary for the word
Retribution, it would say that this comic book has terrifying
thrills done with excellence!

THE MANY ADVENTURES OF KONG

Although the sequel SON OF KONG came out the same year as its
"parent" film KING KONG in 1933, several film sequels were
considered until the 1960's.  In the mid 1940's, an adventure of
the voyage from Skull Island back to NYC with Kong was
contemplated, with the decision to instead go with an entirely
new character, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG.  Chief Technician WILLIS O BRIEN
pitched two sequels through ideas and drawings in the 1950's.
The first was KING KONG VS FRANKENSTEIN, which exists as art of a
20 foot "Frankenstein" monster battling Kong.  Later O Brien
changed the plot to KING KONG VS PROMETHEUS and sold the idea to
producer Jack Harris, who in turn sold it to Toho, which made it
as KING KONG VS GODZILLA, eliminating O Brien's name from any
credits.
