BIG HEAD PRESS RELEASES PREVIEW ART

Big Head Press has released preview pages for the three new web-comics
stories to premier on its re-vamped website, which will launch on May
1.

The stories are THE HOOK, THE ARCHITECT, and ROSWELL, TEXAS.

THE HOOK, by Mike Baron and Gabe Eltaeb (with Mark Stegbauer), is a
space-opera in which music has been banned from "civilized" space and
musicians have fled to a faraway world where they battle the harsh
elements, one another, and black marketers. Hans Shazam fights
desperately to protect his village and the values of Poptopia as
"Granite Planet" falls into chaos and suffers missile attacks from
interplanetary interlopers. The story will be 110 pages long when
completed.

THE ARCHITECT, also by Baron, and Andie Tong, is a horror story of
betrayal and revenge based loosely on the life and work of architect
Frank Lloyd Wright. Gil Hopper, adopted as a baby, discovers he is the
heir to the famous architectural genius Roark Dexter Smith, and
inherits
Bluff House, a secluded mansion where a mysterious fire killed Smith,
his wife, and Smith's assistant.

But there are dark secrets involving Gil's heritage, which may prove
fatal to him and his friends as they work to restore the half-ruined
Smith masterpiece. Colors are provided by Mike Kilgore, and letters by
Scott Bieser. The story will run 70 pages when completed.

ROSWELL, TEXAS, by L. Neil Smith and Scott Bieser, is an
alternative-history tale describing what might happen if David
Crockett
survived the Alamo, and as a result Texas never joined the United
States. A bit more than a century later, in 1947, a flying saucer
crash-lands in the far western Texas town of Roswell. President
Charles
A. Lindbergh's best friend "Wild" Bill Bear leads a trio of Texas
Rangers in a race against foreign agents from Mexico, California, the
United States and the Third Reich to recover the crashed machine and
learn its secrets.

Many famous historical figures appear in this story, often assuming
quite different and unexpected roles. Colors are provided by Jen Zach,
with lettering by Zeke Bieser, and this story will run a whopping 288
pages when completed. The graphic story is adapted from an unpublished
prose novel by L. Neil Smith and Rex F. May.

The stories will be serialized as web-comics on the new site, and
later
published in print form, following a model pioneered by such
indie-comics luminaries as Phil Foglio, Batton Lash and Carla Speed
McNeil.

All three stories will premier with 10 to 12 pages' worth of material
each on May 1. Thereafter, The Hook will update on Mondays, The
Architect on Wednesdays, and Roswell, Texas on Fridays.

The re-vamped Big Head Press website will feature not only the three
stories, but a forum section, links to blogs by many of the creators,
and a "company" store where merchandise featuring images from the
stories may be purchased, as well as printed books when those become
available.

SHE DRAWS COMICS: MoCCA Celebrates a Century of America's Women
Cartoonists

May 20 opening reception features curator and herstorian Trina Robbins

NEW YORK - On May 20, the exhibit "SHE DRAWS COMICS: 100 Years of
America's Women Cartoonists" opens at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon
Art (MoCCA) in New York City. Developed in conjunction with the
country's foremost authority on the subject, writer and scholar Trina
Robbins, the exhibit features over 50 artists and 100 artworks, making
it the largest retrospective of women's work in comic and cartoon art
ever mounted.

SHE DRAWS COMICS celebrates the diversity of the artists and art being
that has been and is currently being created by women in the comics
medium. The show includes artists as varied as Nell Brinkley, a
pioneering feminist cartoonist of the turn-of-the-century; Dale
Messick, the famed creator of "Brenda Starr: Reporter," who wrote and
drew Brenda from the 1940's through the 1980's; legendary women super
hero artists of the 1960's and 1970's Marie Severin and Ramona Fradon;
Robbins herself, the country's first true female underground comic
artist who helped push forth the work of other like-minded artists in
the 1970's; and the many women leading the Renaissance in graphic
novels today, including Jessica Abel (Pantheon's La Perdida), Sara
Varon (Sweaterweather) and Tania del Rio (Manga-Ka).

Most of the pieces from the first half of the century come from the
personal collection of Robbins, the author of such books as A Century
of Women Cartoonists, The Great Women Superheroes, and Nell Brinkley
and the New Woman in the Early Twentieth Century.

While promoting women cartoonists has always been important to
Robbins,
it is particularly important this year. Part for the impetus for her
approaching MoCCA to mount this show is the exhibit of the Museum of
Contemporary Art in Los Angeles entitled "Masters of American Comics."
Robbins was dismayed to discover that while the Los Angeles's museum
exhibit claims to feature "fifteen of the most influential artists" in
the field, none of the exhibited artists are women.

Robbins' concern lies not in an abstract desire for "fairness," but a
need for concrete historical accuracy.  "I have to ask, 'influential'
to whom?" Robbins asks.  "Certainly little girls and women, who make
up
52% of the population, were not influenced by Dick Tracy, but a great
many of them, including Candace Bergen, were influenced by Brenda
Starr.  And so many little girls used to cut out Nell Brinkley pages,
color them in and paste them into their scrapbooks that it's hard to
find uncolored Brinkley pages. My point is that these women were
important and influential."

While many people may not know it, some of their favorite characters
may have been created by a woman cartoonist: Grace Drayton, whose work
was published in the early 1910's, created the Campbell Kids, who were
comic strip characters before they graced the sides of Campbell's Soup
cans. Rose O'Neill was the creator of the kewpies, beloved American
characters who were cartoons before they were dolls. Tarpe Mills,
despite her androgynous name, was the woman behind the action strip
Miss Fury.

SHE DRAWS COMICS is on display at MoCCA through November 6, 2006.

The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts
education organization dedicated to the preservation, study and
display
of all forms of comic and cartoon art.  The museum promotes greater
understanding and appreciation of the artistic, cultural and
historical
significance of comic and cartoon art through a variety of events,
exhibitions, and educational programs.   The museum is currently
located at 594 Broadway (between Houston and Prince Streets) in New
York City.  MoCCA exhibits are generally open to the public on
Fridays,
Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 12:00-5:00 pm.  General admission
to the museum is $3 but free for MoCCA Members as well as children 12
and under.  For more information about the museum or specific MoCCA

SECOND PART OF ZOOM SUIT ANIMATED SHORT HIDDEN ONLINE

Clues to Finding the Premier of the Animated Short Can Be Found in
First Issue of Comic

April 25, 2006, Palm Beach, FL - Comic fans have a challenge this week
as Zoom Suit #1 arrives in comic shops on Wednesday April 26. All the
clues necessary to locate the online hiding spot of the 18 minute
animated sequel, Zoom Suit Episode II, are hidden inside the comic.
The
first clue for fans to look for is a phone number.

Fans that find and view the animated short will also be eligible to
receive limited edition Zoom Suit comics, as well as other prizes such
as DVDs and original art from the animation.

Zoom Suit, written by John Taddeo with interior art by Billy Dallas
Patton, features 40 pages of content, as well as covers by some of the
biggest creators in comics including Bob Layton, Bill Tucci, Bart
Sears, Gene Colan and Jim Starlin. The entire comic book also features
a unique printing process called MetalFX which allows the Zoom Suit to
appear in millions of metallic colors throughout the book.

Fans are urged to pick up their copies early on the April 26 street
date because Zoom Suit #1 was allocated to comic shops. Although the
allocation was expected to be in the 90 percent range reports are that
some retailers will receive less than 50 percent of their original
order.

Here is what the critiques are already saying about Zoom Suit #1.

"I am hooked. Zoom Suit has some of the most imaginative writing I
have
seen in ages! Finally a comic I can let my kid read, but only after I
am done with it! Much like the greatest classic cartoons, this is
amazing and captivating to kids while being funny and witty on an
adult
level. Possibly my favorite thing is all of the little jokes here and
there. Random people asking why they were drawn into the frame and why
they did not get a cool computer like everyone else. This one is
definitely on my pull list." - Ronee G Bourgeois, Buzzscope

"This is a comic book fan's comic book. Zoom Suit is a great
independent book with a lot of heart, a good sized dollop of fun and
plenty of zoom for your buck." - Jason Berek-Lewis, Broken Frontier

"Zoom Suit #1 is a fabulous looking book, an awesome read, and an
engaging cast of characters. Highly recommended!" - Kevin Noel Olson,
Silver Bullet Comic Books

"Zoom Suit is fun, action packed, and it has tons of funny references
to DC and Marvel heroes. If you buy only one comic ever make sure this
is it!" Richard Vasseur, Jazma Online

Disney's Magical Kingdoms: Abadazad and Jellaby
This story originally appeared in PW Comics Week on April 25, 2006

by Heidi MacDonald, PW Comics Week -- 4/25/2006

It's one of the oddities of comics around the world: Disney publishes
the most popular comics in places you wouldn't expect for an audience
you wouldn't expect.

While Disney is the #1 publisher of children's comics around the
world, adult readers have made periodicals starring Mickey Mouse and
Donald Duck bestsellers in Italy, Denmark and Norway, where they can't
get enough of such magazines as Topolino and Anders And.

In the U.S., Disney's comics output has had its ups and downs over the
years. But as the graphic novel category grows for both adults and
children, Disney has been getting back into the field with a mix of
in-house properties like W.I.T.C.H. and acquisitions such as Abadazad
and the just-announced Eisner award nominated webcomic Jellaby by Kean
Soo, who was in the acclaimed comics anthology Flight.

"We're always on the lookout for comics material," says Brenda Bowen,
v-p and editor-in-chief of Disney Children's Books. "We don't have a
[separate] line; we're just infusing comics into our publishing
material."

Chief among the projects Bowen is excited about is Abadazad, a fantasy
prose title acquired in the bankruptcy sale of comics publisher
Crossgen. Written by comics writer J.M. DeMatties with sections of
comics by animation vet Mike Ploog, it's the story of a girl who must
enter a fictional fantasyland to rescue her little brother. Bowen says
the level of interest in Abadazad been a surprise even for Disney,
prompting an increase in the print run from 30,000 to 100,000 copies.
Two books are being launched in mid-May, with displays at the major
chains and appearances by Ploog and DeMatties at BEA. They are also a
Book-of-the-Month Club selections. The property has already been sold
into 11 countries, and will be one of the lead titles for the launch
of HarperCollins' graphic novel line in the U.K.

"It was sort of a gleam in our eye," says Bowen of the development of
Abadazad. "As the books began to take shape and we showed people
proofs, retailers become excited. The response from Price Club and
Costco [was great] right off the bat."

What's most unusual about the books is the format-a mix of prose,
illustrations and comics, covering the multiple layers of the story.
Originally signed for four books, the Abadazad line is now planning
for eight titles.

While Abadazad is the most prominent of the titles picked up from
Crossgen, others are still in play for development. "They're starting
to bubble up," says Bowen, mentioning Ruse, a Victorian-era mystery
featuring two bickering detectives that's aimed at an older teen
audience. The book has already been optioned by Beacon Films.
"We are sitting on a goldmine of wonderful stories and fabulous art,"
says Bowen. "They will emerge in due course-each one has to have its
right format."

According to vp of business development and strategic planning Steve
Miller, Disney's Italian comics team, which is based in Milan, is
continuing to develop properties for both the European and American
markets. W.I.T.C.H. started in Italy and became a big a hit across
Europe. Brought over to the U.S. a few years ago, the book about five
teens with special powers found a ready reception, with 18 prose
novels and four graphic novels already on the shelves and four more
prose novels and two more graphic novels in the works.

"We're looking at several new concepts out of Milan," says Miller.
"Some of it is based on our existing content, but taking it in a new
direction."

Although Disney hasn't jumped on the manga bandwagon, the company is
looking at developing more content out of Japan, according to Miller,
publishing manga versions of Disney properties that are appropriate in
the Japanese market and developing a pool of talent there.

Meanwhile, Bowen's list is expanding with a mix of material. Two
nonfiction graphic biographies are underway, created in coordination
with faculty members at the Center for Cartoon Studies: Houdini by
James Sturm and Nick Bertozzi, and Satchel Paige by Sturm and Jason
Lutes. (All three are award-winning creators.) A Pirates of the
Caribbean graphic novel, produced by the Italian Disney studio, will
be published in January 2007. Comics from the long-running Disney
Adventures magazine have proven popular enough to spin off into their
own collections, which have been selling briskly on newsstands,
according to Miller.

Finally, Disney has just announced a deal to publish Jellaby by Kean
Soo, a web comic which was just nominated for an Eisner Award for Best
Online Comic. Soo is a self-taught cartoonist who was formally trained
in electrical engineering, and serves as assistant editor for Flight.
Jellaby is the story of Portia, a 10-year-old girl who finds a monster
living behind her house. The story is projected to run 300 pages, and
will appear in either two or three volumes.

Given the worldwide success of Disney's characters, it's ironic that
bringing Disney comics back to the attention of American kids has
taken such a long time. "The kids are open, it's a matter of getting
to all the gatekeepers, including ourselves," says Bowen. "The kids
just think it's more stuff. [To them] it's just another form of
storytelling."

largest roster of comic book characters ever seen in a video

America, and through their actions determine the fate of both
planet Earth and the Marvel universe - revealed in one of
