Title: How To Self-Publish Comics...Not Just Create Them # 1
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writer: Josh Blaylock
Artist: Josh Blaylock
Price: $ 4.95 US
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Comments: Josh gives you a factual account of what you need to
know about getting started on your own comic. He goes into a lot
of detail. He doesn't tell you what to make your comic about
rather he tells you how to get it made.
Josh gives straight forward easy to follow advice. If you are
just starting out and really want to get your comic published you
might find it useful. He gives you an honest opinion of what to
expect and lets you know it won't be easy. You will have to work
and work hard to get published.
Josh doesn't sugar coat it he tells it like it is. It is
refreshing to have someone being completely honest with what you
can expect.
So if you want to self publish give this a try it might help.

Title: G.I.Joe: Special Missions # 1
Publisher: Devil's Due
Writers: B. Clay Moore, Tim Seeley
Artists: Jeremy Haun, John Rauch
Price: $ 4.95 US
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Comments: This issue has three stories the first "Manhattan" has
a group of five reserve agents that are called to duty. Beach
Head is the team leader and the writing certainly brings out his
leadership qualities. The reserve Joes are drawn well except the
faces are a little vague. They do show team work.
The second story "Brother's Keeper" this story flows along so
smoothly. You don't really know exactly whats going on till half
way through it and right at the end a little surprise. This story
also features to litle know characters in Barrel Roll a G.I.Joe
and a Cobra member Blackout.
The last story "P.E.T.S. Primal Emergency Tactical Squad"
features animals and they take on B.E.A.S.T.S. Brute Enforcement
And Slithery Terrorists. Its G.I.Joe pets vs Cobra pets in this
silly parrats dream. Story by Sam Wells, Sean Dove and art by
Sean Dove, Russ Lowery, Spephen Casselli & Danielle Rudoni.
Shipwreck's parrat does have some strange dreams.

Title: The Nightmarist
Publisher: Active Images
Writer: Duncan Rouleau
Artist: Duncan Rouleau
Price: $ 14.99 US
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Comments: Well we start out with a psychiatry session about
people having dreams. The characters are something else. They are
weird and strange. Beth is the main character she is a likeable
person, she is just troubled by bad dreams. The imagery is very
surreal.
You will never be sure when reality turns to dream. Than Beth
meets the Nightmarist from the Ministry of Dreams. After meeting
the Nightmarist Beth can see creatures among humankind preying on
their minds. They are drawn as strange and frightening creatures.
Is dreaming hell? For Beth it may be. But is the dreaming
becoming reality. Or is she just insane?
There are forces at work who want to eliminate Beth or control
her. But why? Why is she so important?
This story will keep you guessing is it dream or reality or
both or somewhere inbetween.
Arbus a Century Dreamer who helps people in their dreams is
this Beth or a dream? Will we ever know for sure? Read it and see
if you can tell.
It is a surreal look between the waking and dreaming world that
will have you questioning your own dreams.
This is a definite must read!

Title: ANT # 5
Publisher: Image
Writer: Mario Gully
Artist: Mario Gully
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 3.50 Can
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Comments: Hanna is drawn as one fine looking woman. Hanna's
sexuality really comes through in the drawings. The writing
brings out just how strong Hanna is. Her internal strength with
all the stuff in her life is amazing.
Now add to that ants can talk to her. You'll never guess what
this one ant tells her to do. Strip naked and spray her nude body
with red paint. She looks ready for anything but is she?
Hanna is a down to earth girl. She has problems like ordinary
people. She also has an inner strength.
This issue doesn't have much action except in a flashback where
she kills fifty thousand people. All bad guys that really deserve
it, like terrorists.
ANT is an exciting sexy super hero with plenty of twists and
turns.

Title: Blue Beetle # 1
Publisher: DC
Writer: Keith Giffens & John Rogers
Artist: Cully Hamner
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.00 Can
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Comments: The new Blue Beetle is a kid and the armor looks
strange it is magical based. It is even powerful enough to take
on a Green Lantern. The armor seems as if it is alive.
For some reason the other super heroes hate him. The magical
armor somehow creates this in others.
Jamie is a nice ordinary teen boy. He seems to be very
likeable. His main problem is he has a stone bug that crawled
inside him.
The new costume does look pretty cool. The black and blue go
good together. The pointed legs on his costume add a little
menacing look to it.

THIS SHOW IS HORRIBLE, I TELL YOU

One episode of the series ROUTE 66 is of particular interest to
horror film fans.  It guest starred PETER LORRE, LON CHANEY JR
and BORIS KARLOFF.  Chaney was made up as THE MUMMY, QUASIMODO
and THE WOLFMAN, while Karloff donned the makeup of the
FRANKENSTEIN MONSTER for the last time on film.

SPOILER WARNING:
THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS
OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Title: Origins of the Cadre #2
Publisher: Nifty Comics
Story: Mat Nastos and Andrew Pellerito
Art: Paul J. Holden
Price: $3.50
Comments:  You want some suspense in your life?  Well, check out
Origins of the Cadre #2!  Take the town of San Pedro and 30,000
inhabitants are marked for death!  I'm not going to give away the
story, because I want to tantalize you with the concept of where
this story might be headed.  You want some cool characters?  This
comic book has some very cool characters, with superb powers and
outstanding costumes, with names like Chaac, Stratus, Wraith,
Paragon, Jack Wolfe!  Chaac seems to be the most powerful, he has
the power of storms.  Chaac is also a legend and comes from a
long line of heroes.  You will learn about the destiny of the
Avatars.  Who are the Avatars?...hmmm...again, check out this
comic book and find out!  Wraith makes a dire comment...'there
are dark days ahead', so you know things are going to get grim.
You will see the training of some new heroes...Skyfire and
Thunderbolt.  On a Yucatan journey, the two brothers Skyfire and
Thunderbolt will learn of their newfound powers that they will
soon possess.  They will learn of their duty to combat evil.  The
next issue, will feature the most unusual character of the Nifty
Comics Universe...the one and only White Dwarf!  Mat Nastos is a
superb plotter and wordsmith.  He chronicles the hopes and fears
of his Cadre heroes in broad strokes and fine detail.  Origins of
the Cadre is viscerally exciting, an extended tense tour de
force, an expertly crafted ornate suspense thriller!   Did I
mention that the artwork is exceptionally well done?  I didn't?
 Well, believe me it is!

Name: Astonishing X-Men #13
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Creative Force: Joss Whedon and John Cassaday
Price: $2.99
Overviewed by: Paul Dale Roberts, MOE
Comments: I was completely surprised on how well Emma Frost in
Astonishing X-Men #13 took the news that she might be facing a
secondary mutation.  Then later being told that as a psychic, she
is in the Bush League.  Nevertheless, there was excitement in
this comic book, as Wolverine takes his young recruits into the
Danger Room.  I know if I were a young recruit, I would never
want to be in the Danger Room with Logan.  The young recruits
have very poor morale and the little girl showed it, when she
said that she would never become an X-Man.  Like the movie Sixth
Sense...Kitty Pryde sees dead people.  I enjoyed the small talk
about the original Hell-Fire Club.  The Hell-Fire Club has been
in the Marvel Universe for a long time and I wonder if the
concept came from the Hell-Fire Club that Benjamin Franklin was
known to frequent?  Also, I got a kick out of going from
'international' to intergalactic, when it comes to criminals that
SHIELD is holding.  Good story and I will look forward to seeing
the outcome!

Name: Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Creative Force: David, Cruz and Olazaba
Price: $2.99
Comments:  After reading Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, I
would love to see one story, yes, one story in which J. Jonah
Jameson befriends Spider-Man!  Jolly J. Jonah Jameson is angry at
Spider-Man again.  Jonah blames Spidey for placing the poison
spear into his opponent's leg, while Robbie is logical and says
that Spider-Man looked as surprised as anyone when this occurred,
of course Jonah had a good comeback that Spidey wears a mask, so
how could Robbie tell what his expression was.... good point
Jonah.    I don't like the new costume that Spider-Man wears,
please change it back.  There was some good humor between Spider-
Man and Iron-Man's dialogue and I liked what Iron-Man
said..."maybe science and magic aren't mutually exclusive".  This
seems reasonable to me.  I like the mean persona of El Dorado.
Jonah is not scared of standing up to anyone, as he faces down
El Dorado and says that the pen is mightier than the sword.
Jonah had a startled look on his face, when El Dorado brings
out two swords after that comment.  How did Spider-Man use his
flexible webbing as a temporary hard sword??  How did that work?
Another highlight was seeing Spider-Man go one-on-one with El
Dorado and Jonah still can't believe that Spider-Man is a good
guy, he believes now that he is faking that whole fight and he is
in cahoots with El Dorado.... ya, right Jonah!

Name: Savage Dragon #124
Publisher: Image Comics
Story & Art: Erik Larsen
Price: $2.99
Email: Erik@savagedragon.com
Comments: Voting machines manipulated are mentioned in Savage
Dragon #124.  How funny, because I was just testing the voting
machines in Orange County and Pleasanton.  No lie, that's a part
of my real job.  But, I am not going to get into those issues.
(Remember Florida) is all I am going to say.  I have seen Savage
Dragon at his worse, but he was an absolute mess in this issue,
missing limbs and whatnot.  I hate seeing Savage Dragon this way,
thank goodness he has a miraculous healing factor and limb
rejuvenating ability.  Dread Knight really laid down the rhetoric
and how can he not like Bush?  Okay, sure Bush says a lot of off-
the-wall things, he screwed up on the WMDs in Iraq, but he did
get the job done in Afghanistan after 9/11.  Hmmm.maybe I better
keep my thoughts to myself on my idealogy on what a President
should be like.  Super Patriot shows that he is definitely good
back-up for Savage Dragon, as he takes aim on Dread Knight and
neutralizes his armor, where he can't summon up his Army.  The
second story was a thrill, going into Sebastian Khan's dungeons
and seeing the tough kid...Joey Finkleberry!   What?  Savage
Dragon sees Doom Patrol in the dungeon, and then did I see Wonder
Woman?  This is worse than Saw II and Quentin Tarantino's
Hostel...I mean worse! My hat is off to Erik for two good Savage
Dragon tales!  Who needs The Chronicles of Narnia, when I have
the Chronicles of The Savage Dragon?  I wonder who else was in
Sebastian Khan's Dungeon...maybe Aeon Flux, how about Ultraviolet
or Death Dealer Selene of Underworld: Evolution?  I could have
sworn I saw Jet-X and Lilau chained up in there, but of course
that could have been my overactive imagination.

Name: Hiroaki Samura Blade of the Immortal #112
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Story & Art: Hiroaki Samura
Price: $2.99
Email: blade@darkhorse.com
Comments:  This reminded me of a manga Frankenstein story.  The
cutting off of limbs, reattaching them and wondering if
immortality or mortality will take effect on the patients in
question.  Hiroaki Samura Blade of the Immortal #112 was very
intriguing and kept me sitting on the edge of my seat.  Shogunate
Doctor Mozen-Dono is a warped intellect of anatomy science.  That
prison is a tease for prisoners, since there is no guard at the
gates, but there is 50 Poshin ready to take a prisoner's life, if
he tries to escape.  The temptation is there, but then again, it
isn't.  I saw the movie "Wolf Creek" based on a true story, in
which some young kids in the outback of Australia are taken
prisoner by a serial killer and of course he does some limb
hacking and with this story, it kind of brought back memories of
that movie, especially when it was mentioned the losing of limbs
without anesthetic.  Then human livers for profit, what madness
is this?  Yes, this is a dramatic thriller that left some
goosebumps on my arms!

Name: Shon C. Bury's Nox #1
Publisher: Narwain Publishing
Writer: Shon C. Bury
Allan Goldman/pencils  Ed Waysek/colors  Charles
Pritchett/letters
Price: $3.99
Comments:  With Shon C. Bury's Nox #1, you have drama, you have
humor, you have adventure, you have sci fi, you have horror and
anything else you can think of, you almost have romance between
one of the characters named Bobby who tries to impress a sexy
Barista with his intelligent rhetoric about alternate realities.
He goes on to describe how alternate realities form endlessly
every single second at the atomic level.  The heroes of this
story, Bobby and Joey have a love/hate relationship, they tease
each other, they argue over this and that and at times it is very
comical.  Bobby and Joey argue over the methodology of picking up
women and Bobby's way is the wrong way according to Joey.   Joey
is quite the character, he keeps a journal and you had better not
call it a 'diary', he is very possessive of this journal and
there is talk of dreams, a dream of a white goddess.  This white
goddess has a name, her name is Celestia.  The story has plenty
of mystique, as our heroes dabble in Celtic sacred items from an
amulet to a staff.  Throw in a hypothesis or two, such as the
molecule of life may have originated on another planet.  There is
a very strange scene in which Joey falls into a surreal state of
mind and the Mandela turns into various shapes of demons that
seem to want to attack Joey, then there is the picturesque beauty
of Celestia and a weird liana-like tree that leads to the
heavens.  As the story moves to an erratic beat, leaving the
reader wondering what will happen next, then you have Krill
Shadow Wraiths that make their appearance, two demonic walking
shadows that will give you goosebumps!  Now steps in The Nun.
The Nun is a powerful entity that takes on the Krill Wraiths
with a ferociousness that holds no bounds.  Yes, you get plenty
of action!  Bobby takes on the Krill Wraiths with his staff and
when Bobby is fighting these demons, he throws in some humor
during the battle, which makes the fight scenes even more
enjoyable to watch!   Bobby and Joe learn from the mysterious Nun
that the Wraiths are demonic specters that come from universal
unconsciousness.  Joey and Bobby take up the call to adventure
and where they go from there is anyone's guess, but wherever they
go, you know that thrills and chills are just around the corner!
The artwork is topnotch and Ed is coloring straight from
pencils, similar to Cary Nord's Conan.  You can't get any better
than that!  A python long entanglement of mystery, intrigue and
excitement!  Shon C. Bury outdoes himself this time!  Nox #1 is a
nosebleed of adventure!

Name: Soul to Seoul
Publisher: Tokyopop
Creator: Kim Jea Eun
Price: $9.99
Comments:  Kai and Spike are best friends and they have something
in common.  Both are 1/2 Korean.  Koreans of pure blood shun
them.  Kai and Spike feel uncomfortable in society and in their
own homes.  Then they meet Sunil, a Korean foreign-exchange
student that leads them on a journey that is part self-discovery
and all heart and soul.  This story will take you to the Far East
to New York City.  There are some exceptional scenes shown in
this graphic novel.  If you like hip-hop flair, you will find it
here.  You even get urban blight and will learn about the power
and passion of friendship.  In one part of the story, Kai fancies
himself as a gangster and even has a license plate that says
"Mademen".  The artwork is black and white and shows good
clarity.  Deep rooted friendships are cast in 'bonding' and if
you watch "Friends" and "Seinfeld" or even reruns of The
Courtship of Eddie's Father, you are attracted to these shows
because of the strong bonding amongst friends and family.  This
would definitely be the story for you.

Name: Tenjho Tenge 3
Publisher: CMX
Creator: Oh! Great
Price: $9.99
Comments:  Yikes!  The school is dominated by ruthless martial
arts teams.  Watch out Bruce Lee, there is more action in this
school, than in your movie "Enter the Dragon"!  A rogue club must
fight the odds just to survive!  There is a huge battle at the
bowling alley and everyone is injured!  The battle continues on
from the first floor to the roof of the bowling alley.  You would
think the fighting will never stop.  You have the Juken Club vs.
Executive Committee's deadliest members.  No holds bar!  One
character named Bob, becomes a turncoat for his losing team and
sides with the winning team, for his own survival.    Two
characters Natsume Aya and Nagi Soichiro release their inner
demons and all hell breaks loose!  The drawings are crisp and
sharp.

THE BIZARRO GILLIGAN?

The same season GILLIGAN'S ISLAND debuted, another short lived
series made it slight mark on TV screens. 1964's THE BAILEYS OF
BALBOA was about a small boat owner being forced out of his
property by a local rich yacht club.  Star Paul Ford (of SGT
BILKO)  played the boat owner Bailey, while his first mate
dressed almost identical to Gilligan and was played by veteran
actor STERLING HOLLOWAY.

I like to point out unusual things about comics when I come
across them. This one is the famous double cover variant. What I
mean is, by some quirk, two covers where stapled on the book. You
probably won't get one like that. Mine is bound to become very
valuable some day! Heh, heh!

I have mixed reactions to this comic. While I liked it overall,
some of it is not to my liking. Tuazon's art is "loose". By that
I mean it is done with fewer lines and less detailed background.
That is not bad if it still relays the story and he does that
well. There is character definition, emotion, action and
transition.

"First Day Back" is about a school of gifted young girls who are
just now coming into their training and each one is finding out
which magic they have an aptitude for wielding. One girl wants
offensive magic so bad she flips out when she is assigned
defensive. One out of the group is unusual in that the three
teachers can't figure out which magic fits her best. The story
takes up most of its time with discussions between the three
teachers and the kids and later some of the girls on their own.
It is an interesting premise to begin, but it doesn't go very far
in this first chapter. The last page shows a scene in the woods
with something in the brush but frankly, it is not clear what it
might be. I can't tell if that is on purpose or just the "loose"
style" failing to define it clearly enough.

The second is a text story with illustrations. Sorry, but at
$4.50 I would not keep buying a "comic book" with 12 pages of
text story. That is just me. I am sure Caleb is just as
passionate about it as he is with the lead story. I would have
saved the interlude for a future point, have less pages at a more
attractive price and see if the comic sells enough to support
itself.

"The Curse" on the other hand was a pleasant surprise. Red Sox
fans will get a kick out of this interpretation of the real
nature of the Curse of the Bambino and why it ended. It is clever
and well drawn.

FLARE #33
32 pages, full color, $3.25

"Secret Invasion of the Gorillas from Outer Space"
Story - Wilson Hill
Art - J. Adam Walters
Color - Tom Luth
Letters - Albert Deschesne

"A Sound of Distant Wonder"
Story - Steve Perrin
Art - Terry - Pallot
Color - Melchman
Letters - Albert Deschensne

Cover by Scott Shaw!, Gordon Purcell and Mike Estlick

If ever there was a classic comic book cover in tribute to the
days when Julie Schwartz would have an idea for a cover and then
charge Gardner Fox or John Broome to come up with a story to fit
it, this one is it! It has everything - purple alien space
gorillas, flying saucers, a dinosaur, a mechanical man, a
volcano, an atomic explosion and even the old fish in the face
routine. The concept of this issue was to do that tribute. Come
up with an outrageous cover and then make up a story to fit it.
The lead story passes that test.

Not having read FLARE, that I can recall, this was probably a
good introduction. The lead character is a heroine but the story
is told from the perspective of her boyfriend, Hector Andros, The
Sky Marshal - or at least he was. He is telling a publisher a
fantastic story. It is about the secret underwater world run by
intelligent sharks. They want to rid the world of mankind under
their leader the super-intelligent, megalomaniacal, shark
scientist shark, Carcharo. He detects the approach of a race of
alien apes looking for a place to settle since their world was
destroyed. The shark communicates a proposed alliance and the
pact is made. Sky Marshal discovers the plan to have sharks and
apes rule the world and he enlists FLARE to help him stop it.
There is a lot that happens to get from here to the volcano,
explosion and fish in the face, but trust me, it works. At one
point Flare is devolved to an ape and the result is pretty funny.
It is a well drawn story too. Everyone came together to make this
a superb story and it is indeed a fitting tribute.

The backup story is a tale of Sparkplug, another heroine in this
universe. She is helping her friend Jim Dooley. He has possession
of the Belt of Wonders which he can activate for 5 minutes at a
time and which has the power to grant him any wish. He just does
not know how to activate it. He accidentally said the magic word
and does not know which one it was. Meanwhile, he suspects she is
really Olga Gottmann's alter ego. They are tracking down some
hooded bad guys who almost killed them in a collapsed building
filling with water. It is a somewhat typical plot with the good
guys winning. The art is decent enough. It is just average fare
overall.

WITCHGIRLS INC. #3
32 pages, full color, $3.25
Cover by Frank Brunner, Mike Estlick & Tom Luth

"Circles of Fear"
Story - Frank Brunner
Art - Chris Marrinan
Colors - John Heebink & Julian Meyer with J. Newhouse
Letters by Albert Deschesne

The first "witch" is PSYCHE. She has a dream and senses a friend
is in danger. She flies to London and learns he is missing. She
finds out about a radical group called Lunazis and a powerful
member with powers to persuade that are supernatural. She has
powers of her own, hence the title of the book. People get
murdered and the witnesses forget it happened. And these strange
dreams keep drawing her in deeper. There are even battles on the
astral plane. It is tightly plotted and drawn. The elements of
suspense keep us guessing as to what is behind it all. Really a
good lead story.

"On the Waterfront"
Story - Wilson Hill
Art - J. Adam Walters and Rob Lansley
Color - Keith Chancey
Letters by Doug Brown

This is Black Enchantress Adventure, another female adventurer
with supernatural powers. She goes to the waterfront warehouse
district for a meet is attacked by some ninja types. She defeats
them easily and their master appears. He is the guy she is
meeting. It was his test to be sure she was the Black
Enchantress. He has some ancient scrolls she is seeking and will
offer them to her at a fair price, her decision to what is fair.
Big mistake! It is kind of a fun story but not much to the plot
once you take the fight scenes out of it. The colors are
particularly striking and the style is somewhat like an old Dr.
Strange comic.

Letters by Albert Dechesne

The third female of the book is Vanity. In this story she tells a
tale of the Italian Renaissance and an ambitious son of a wealthy
family. He wants a local convent and its lands and offers the
mother superior his protection in exchange for most of the land -
protection from his own men that is. She asks to negotiate with
him in private and reveals the real secret of the convent and how
they held the land for so long. The art is on the same high
standards as the other stories. The attempt to tell a tale with a
twist ending works well as you may not see it coming. The
narration by Vanity is an added touch, but since I have not read
one of her stories before I am not sure if this is the norm for
this feature.

Overall the book is entertaining and has some variety. All the
art is good. For $3.25 it is worth the money.
