"The animated short film led many new fans into comic shops", said Zoom Suit Creator John Taddeo. "Many shops sold out of issue #1 before the month was up, but with a very small print run, issue two will dry up much more quickly". Due to Distributor order cutoff dates, comic shop retailers had to order issues #1, 2 and 3 before experiencing the strong retail sales on Zoom Suit #1. Orders on Zoom Suit issue #2 through Diamond Comics were just over 6,000 copies. However, within days of the release of issue 1, retailers ordered all of Diamonds remaining copies via advance reorders. Once Diamond was sold out, retailers turned to Taddeo for additional copies to meet consumer demand. "Luckily we printed extras to give out at film festivals", said Taddeo. Retailers began phoning me asking to increase orders a week or two ago. I shipped my copies off as quickly as possible, and over the last four days I realized that we had shipped an additional 4,200 copies bringing total sales on the second issue to over 10,000 copies." Orders on the April 26th release of Zoom Suit #1 exceeded 20,000 copies, a demand of more than double order estimates of industry professionals and triple the expectation of the publisher. The comic was allocated to direct market comic shops at 90% of initial orders, and quickly sold out in all but the most heavily stocked shops. "It's amazing how fans have taken to Zoom Suit", said Taddeo. "I printed nearly twice what the market ordered on issue #2 and yet sold out by the release date. We sold over $10,000 worth of Zoom Suit special editions and merchandise since the release of issue #1 and additionally sold over $2,000 of ZS items to benefit the Florida Humane Society. A sincere heartfelt thanks to everyone contributing to the unexpected success of Zoom Suit". ZOOM SUIT #2 (Shipped May 24th) features a story by John Taddeo, with covers by Bart Sears and Keron Grant. The Interior is by Keron Grant and Billy Dallas Patton. Retailers also received a limited edition Armored Legends Edition by Bob Layton. ZOOM SUIT #3 is complete. Superverse guarantees a delivery date of June 28th 2006. Preorders are recommended. +++++ Superman's New Power: Invisibility? Friday, May 19, 2006 By Roger Friedman 'Superman Returns' Superman's New Power: Invisibility? Where the heck is Superman? That's the question being asked at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Rumored to have cost upward of $250 million, Warner Bros.' "Superman Returns" is all about invisible here with roughly six weeks to go before its release. A Warner spokeswoman told me last night that my worries were unfounded. "Cannes was never part of our plan," she reassured me. "The movie doesn't open until June 30. And wait 'til you see it. It's wonderful. It's really spectacular." She could be right, of course. "Superman Returns" is directed by Bryan Singer, who made the first two "X-Men" movies hits, and has a final screenplay (after many dozens of versions) by the men who wrote those films. "Superman" not being on the Croisette doesn't necessarily mean the movie's bad. There are plenty of other possible reasons, including not wanting to spend the millions it takes to promote a movie here. Considering how much Warner has blown on the egregious "Poseidon" and needs to put in other places for the already bloated "Superman," no Cannes may just be a cost-cutting measure. For example: Yesterday, an independent publicist bemoaned to me that she'd been quoted a price of 3,000 euros to rent a room for two hours so they could serve the equivalent of milk and cookies and introduce a filmmaker to a few important people. "$5,000?" she said. "Forget it!" But what makes the absence of "Superman" publicity or promotion here so glaring is the presence of tremendous plugs for other upcoming summer blockbusters. "Miami Vice," for example, is represented by a huge wraparound display over the portico of the Hotel Carlton. Dreamworks' "Over the Hedge" and FOX's "X-Men: The Last Stand" are both screening here and getting parties. Not only that, Paramount is putting on the dog, as they used to say, for two key Christmas releases: "Dreamgirls" and "World Trade Center." In the next two days, the studio will show footage from both films - 20 minutes from the former, 30 from the latter - designed to tantalize both press and distributors. Paramount is well represented here with lots of eager-to-help publicists, too. But up on the first floor of the Carlton, where many film companies have housed extensive publicity departments armed with press releases and promotion paraphernalia, there is a strangely foreboding sign attached the to the door of a closed suite: "Warner Bros. publicity office will open on Monday May 23." This is a little jarring, considering that the festival began two days ago, and that most everyone else in the business has been here since at least May 17. It's not like "Superman Returns" isn't mentioned here at all. Six narrow, vertical, hard-backed posters, which are also blown up, adorn the front of the Carlton along the high floors. They are so discreet, though, that Superman looks less like a comic strip live-action adventure and more like a filmed version of George Bernard Shaw's "Man and Superman." Smaller versions of the posters are mixed in with those for Warner's huge disaster, "Poseidon," on the Carlton terrace. But that's it. There is no showing of footage, no appearances by the new Superman, Brandon Routh, or Kevin Spacey, the new Lex Luthor. Where Cannes has always been effectively used to hype huge international commercial releases, Warner Bros. seems to have gone in the other direction and hidden it from the very folks who could give this wildly expensive enterprise a foothold in the market. And nothing really explains that sign on the suite door. Pretty much everyone else is here, at least a few people from every studio. The only other glaring absentee is Disney. I suppose they're represented by the new faux-Miramax, which threw an unadvertised cocktail party for itself yesterday afternoon at one of the beach clubs across the Croisette. When I inquired of the publicist with a guest list what was going on, he replied with maybe the best quote so far of the festival. "There's no press and there's no talent," he stated (who was I to dispute that claim?) Pause. "Only executives." They were no doubt celebrating the release of an English film called "Kinky Boots" that came and went faster from theaters than you could lace up your galoshes. The new non-Weinstein Miramax has managed to rake in $860,000 so far domestically since "Kinky Boots" was released a month ago. Last fall, during a six-week run, the same movie made $6 million. Next door to Miramax, Focus Features pulled out all the stops and included no celebrities with the exception of director David Cronenberg. Reveling in the success of "Brokeback Mountain" and "Pride and Prejudice" this year, Focus - an odd duck of a place - filled their beachside club with several hundred strangers. "This is a terrible party," admitted one Focus insider. "The music is terrible and so is the food." +++++ From Jim McCann at Marvel Comics http://www.marvel.com Silvestri Ghost Rider Variant Revealed The Spirit of Vengeance makes his fiery return to an all- new ongoing series with Ghost Rider #1, featuring a hotter-than- hellfire variant by superstar artist Marc Silvestri. The choice was made unanimously by a blue- ribbon committee chaired by writer and historian Mark Evanier. The Bill Finger Award was instituted last year under the supervision of comic book legend Jerry Robinson. The first Finger Awards were presented to veteran writer Arnold Drake, who accepted in person at the 2005 Comic-Con International in San Diego, and to Jerry Siegel, co-creator of Superman; Siegel's widow Joanne accepted for her late husband. "There are many fine writers deserving of wider recognition," Evanier notes. "But this year's judges zeroed in on two men whose bodies of work deserve a special salute, just as Bill Finger and his contribution deserve wider recognition." Alvin Schwartz authored his first comic book script (for Fairy Tale Parade) in 1939 and just three years later began writing Batman, an assignment on which he continued until 1958. In 1944 he also began a long association with Superman as the writer of both the Man of Steel's newspaper strip and many of his comic book appearances. Among Schwartz's many enduring contributions to the Superman mythology, he wrote the first tale of Bizarro, a character who became a part of popular culture, quite apart from comics. Schwartz also worked on Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern and many more DC properties before departing the field of comics in 1958. He was since written novels, an autobiography. and motion pictures. Harvey Kurtzman also began in comics in 1939 and soon became known for his surreal and brilliant work as both writer and artist of humorous fillers and short stories. It was after he joined EC Comics in 1949 that he especially distinguished himself with both humor work, as the editor-creator of Mad and author of its classic early issues, and with war comics as the editor/writer of Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat. Mad soon became not only the best-selling American humor periodical of all time but the keystone of an entire style of humor for several generations, while the war titles have been hailed by many as among the best depictions of war and historical material in comics. Kurtzman later worked on other humor magazines, did a long stint on "Little Annie Fanny" for Playboy, and authored several books before his death in 1993. The Bill Finger Award remembers William Finger (1914-1974), who was the first and, some say, most important writer of Batman. Many have called him the "unsung hero" of the character and have hailed his work not only on that character but on dozens of others, primarily for DC Comics. In addition to Evanier, this year's blue-ribbon selection committee included award-winning cartoonist Jerry Robinson, writer/historian (and author of Men of Tomorrow) Gerard Jones, acclaimed writer Marv Wolfman, and Charles Kochman, a senior editor with Abrams Books. The 2006 awards are being underwritten by DC Comics (the major sponsor), this year joined by Comics Buyer's Guide (CBG), Heritage Auctions, and TwoMorrows Publishing (supporting sponsors). "Though the focus in comics collecting is usually artwork, it is the stories told with that artwork that have captivated generations of fans," says CBG's Maggie Thompson. "Despite that, the writers in the field's earliest decades often worked in anonymity and even today are frequently overlooked. Comics Buyer's Guide is honored to help pay tribute to giants of the past and present-giants who have provided the words for unforgettable tales of imagination." And Jim Halperin of Heritage Auction Galleries notes that his company "is proud to support this award, named for one of the foremost pioneers in comics literature. Without the efforts of Bill Finger and his contemporaries, our world would be duller and much less colorful than it is." Similar sentiments are expressed by John Morrow: "TwoMorrows Publishing is honored to be associated with the Bill Finger Award. A main purpose of all our publications is to document the achievements of great creators throughout comics history. Sadly, Bill Finger's contributions to the medium remained largely uncredited during his lifetime. So an award that recognizes deserving writers-particularly those who are still with us, so we can all express our appreciation to them-is a long time coming, and a natural choice for us to sponsor." The Finger Award falls under the auspices of Comic-Con International: San Diego and is administered by Jackie Estrada. The awards will be presented during the Eisner Awards ceremony at this summer's Comic-Con on Friday, July 21. New York Comic-Con 2007 dates announced Let the adventure begin again! The New York Comic-con has sent a letter to exhibitors announcing the dates for next year as February 23-25, the same weekend as this year. While the time may be the same Bat-time and Bat-channel, the setting will not be: organizers are moving the show to a space twice as large in the UPSTAIRS hall of the Javits. This kind of move, from the downstairs to the upstairs can't be made without the Javitz itself getting on board; clearly they saw the surging mobs at last years show and knew this was going to be big. Milton Griepp has more info at ICv2 on plans to lessen the madhouse that erupted at registration last time: Registration will be handled from twice the number of ticket counters. Only exhibitors and professionals will receive badges; other attendees will simply receive a bracelet showing they've paid. Separate lines will handle pre-registered attendees and those that are registering on-site. Fans that pre-register online will be able to show their bar-coded registration, have it scanned, and be quickly issued a bracelet. Pre-registered exhibitors and professionals will have their credentials mailed out in advance, allowing them to bypass onsite registration. NYCC '07 has huge expectations. At BEA, even some non comics folks we talked to remarked that the BEA seemed tame compared to New York Comic-con. The word among exhibitors at the first NYCC is almost universal -- in five years time they expect it to be as big as San Diego. The official attendance at this year's show was announced as 33,000, making it the 2nd or 3rd largest show in the US. (Wizard World Chicago's attendance is usually over 50,00 but they use the three day pass = 3 attendees accounting method. NYCC uses the one badge = one attendee method.) At any rate, New York Comic-con 2006 has become one of the legends of comics, a "Where were you when?" experience for everyone who even got near the convention center, even if they were sent away by the cops. NYCC 2007 has high hopes to live up to, and it's going to be exciting to see how close they come. Reminder: Eisner ballots due! Jackie Estrada has posted the following reminder on various message boards: Just a reminder: The deadline for getting in your Eisner ballot is Friday, June 2. if you are eligible and didn't get a ballot, e-mail me and I can send you a pdf: jackiee@mindspring.com. Eligible voters are creators (writers, pencillers, inkers, colorists, letterers), editors, publishers, retailers, and distributor managers. In the past two years we've had some very tight voting, ending with ties once each year, so your vote CAN make a difference! (Every year it seems there are complaints about someone's favorite "being robbed"--and the complaints come from folks who never got around to sending their ballots!). More info can be found at http://www.comic- con.org/cci/cci_eisners_main.shtml DRAGONBALL Z to end Akira Toriyama's DRAGONBALL Z, one of the most popular comics series in history, will be coming to an end this summer, and the North American version of SHONEN JUMP will be including extensive coverage of this event.
