Civil War Threatens to Tear a Family Apart in Fantastic Four #538 After the events of Civil War #1, Johnny Storm lies hospitalized, beaten by an unruly crowd angered by the superheroes' role in the Stamford disaster. Amazing Spider-Man #530, Amazing Spider-Man #531, Amazing Spider-Man #532, Wolverine #42, She-Hulk #8, and the Harvey Award-nominated Marvel Spotlight have all sold out at Diamond in this first month of Civil War. Critics and fans alike have been abuzz with how terrific the Civil War tie-ins have been thus far. Civil War: Front Line, which is on its way to selling out, has been chief among the tie- ins receiving a wealth of praise. Richard George of IGN.com says, "This is perhaps the best supplement to an event I have ever read. In the past, companies offered side stories to mega events that did not offer much. So far, between Marvel's excellent shipping schedule and the overall quality of the writing, Civil War is being drastically enhanced by the extra stories (and Mark Millar was already doing an excellent job). Front Line is setting itself to be nearly as important as the main title, featuring great context and additional views to what is happening to the heroes...If you're reading Civil War, Front Line is absolutely critical reading." After reading Civil War: Front Line #1 this week, be sure to pick up Civil War #2 next Wednesday as the comic-event of the year continues to blow readers away. Then, be sure to pick up these Civil War tie-ins in the following order: Thunderbolts #103 - On Sale 6/14 New Avengers #21 - On Sale 6/21 Amazing Spider-Man #533 - On Sale 6/28 Civil War: Front Line #2 - On Sale 6/28 Wolverine #43 - On Sale 6/28 Fantastic Four #538 - On Sale 6/28 X-Factor #8 - On Sale 6/28 If the second month of Civil War tie-ins is anything similar to that of the first, make sure to get your copies early as all of the Civil War titles get hotter, picking up new readers every day. The film had been set up at Lionsgate, where Hayter was attached to write and direct. He had worked on the project for nearly two years. Perhaps observing the lackluster returns for other female action hero films like Elektra and Aeon Flux, Lionsgate let go of the property. "Marvel and I then spoke to a few other financing entities, but I never felt comfortable that we had found a place that was willing to take the movie, and the character, seriously," said Hayter, who was also stymied in his attempt to bring Watchmen to the big screen. "I have put it aside until the right situation comes along, but in the meantime, I am heartbroken. I love this character, I love the story and world we came up with for her, and I sincerely hope the movie gets done some day. "In the meantime, I am creating an original feature to shoot next year." Hayter worked on the first two X-Men movies, as well as early drafts of Hulk and Iron Man. BLADE: THE SERIES' DAVID PALFFY Canadian actor David Palffy is playing Fritz in Spike TV's upcoming Blade: The Series. The character is pictured on the left side of the photo above, along with Neil Jackson's Marcus Van Sciver and Jessica Gower's Chase. "Yes, I'm a bad guy again. He's a very bad vampire," said Palffy, how recently played Anubis in Stargate SG-1. "I'm the one who hunts Blade down. And, as usual, you have a life expectancy where it could end at any time." Palffy's credits also include guest-spots on comics-inspired shows Jeremiah, The Crow: Stairway to Heaven and NightMan. Palffy is married to Smallville's Erica Durance and shared the stage with her at Wizard World Philadelphia. In other Blade: The Series news: * The pilot movie on June 28 will have limited commercial interruptions, thanks to the sponsorhip of Alltel. * Spike TV's giveaways at Wizard World Philadelphia included the new logos for both the network and the show. * Look for more on Blade soon here in The Continuum. (NYSE: MVL), a global character-based entertainment and licensing company, announced today that it has repurchased the full $100 million in common stock under its May 2006 authorization and that its Board of Directors has authorized an additional $100 million to be used for the repurchase of the company's common stock. Pursuant to the authorization, Marvel may purchase shares from time to time through May 31, 2007 in the open market or through privately negotiated transactions. Purchases will be funded from working capital or from borrowings. Marvel has no obligation to repurchase shares under the authorization, and the timing, actual number and value of shares to be purchased will depend on many factors, including the performance of Marvel's stock price, its cash flow and market conditions. Marvel's Vice Chairman, CEO and the company's largest shareholder, Isaac Perlmutter, has agreed to not sell any shares while the repurchase program is in place. Marvel's Chairman, Morton Handel, commented, "Given our continued confidence in Marvel's ability to generate strong levels of free cash flow as well as the modest capital needs of our unique business model, the Board continues to believe that share repurchases are an excellent use of capital that should enhance shareholder value over the long-term. "Since the commencement of our share repurchase programs in July 2004, Marvel has repurchased 33.4 million shares for an aggregate purchase price of $600 million, or approximately $17.95 per share. Our common stock repurchases have reduced Marvel's weighted average diluted shares outstanding to approximately 85.0 million shares, providing what we believe is an important and recurring benefit to our shareholders." +++++ From ComiX-Fan at http://www.comixfan.com/xfan WIZARD WORLD PHILADELPHIA 2006 DAY 1 REPORT Compiled by John Gleason and Zachary J. Morrison Today was the first day of Wizard World: Philadelphia 2006 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Comixfan was on the convention floor to cover the three-day convention. Today's panels included the first stop on Greg Pak's X-Men: Phoenix - Endsong sequel, entitled "Warsong", Marvel's X-Men panel, the Mondo Marvel panel, and much more. X-Men Panel * Astonishing X-Men #16 promises to redefine Kitty Pryde, Quesada noted that the issue, which is the end of the arc, would redefine Kitty as a character, adding that she is writer Joss Whedon's favorite character among the X-Men. * Exiles #85 has the Exiles meeting the six very familiar looking Wolverines that have stolen their jobs. Exiles #86 feature even more alternate versions of everyone's favorite Canuck in action. * New Excalibur #11 kicks off the Frank Tieri penned Olden Times arc which will center around the Black Knight. * Images from Wolverine Origins #4 shown during the panel feature Wolverine in a tussle with Captain America himself, and SPOILERS! Emma Frost on the receiving end of Wolverine's claws. * Writer Tony Bedard will be continuing with work on Exiles while Chris Claremont recovers from recent health issues. The cover for September's Exiles #86 by interior artist Paul Pelletier revealed multiple takes on Wolverine would appear in the alternate reality title. Quesada joked that Marvel felt since there were so many Wolverines running through Marvel books, they had decided to put them all in one place. * X-Men: First Class is a mini series by Jeff Parker and Roger Cruz that focuses around the early days of the original X-Men. A cover image for the book was done by newcomer Marko Djurdjvedic, a video game designer Quesada was introduced to on the Internet by fans. The Marvel head said he was hoping to land the artist on another Marvel book in the near future. * Applying a facelift to the rest of the line was the most important mandate of the summer months with the debut of Mike Carey and X-veteran Chris Bachalo on X-Men #188 and Ed Brubaker and Billy Tan on Uncanny X-Men #475. * Carey (a writer known for off the cuff stories and mature readers series like Vertigo's Lucifer) leads a team consisting of Rogue, Iceman, Mystique, Cannonball, Cable and villain Sabretooth. The covers to Carey and Bachelo's first two issues were shown, and Quesada commented that the cover to X-Men #190 featuring Mystique kissing a somewhat scattered Iceman was his "favorite cover of the year." * Brubaker has plans to launch his Uncanny story from recent events in the X-Men: Deadly Genesis mini series he completed with artist Trevor Hairsine. Beyond the initial covers for the run, completed interior pages were featured including sequences with Polaris and Havok and a Warpath splashpage. * X-Men Phoenix - Warsong is written by Greg Pak with art by Tyler Kirkham of Top Cow fame. The mini series is a sequel to Pak's last X-Men mini series Phoenix - Endsong. The new mini would expand on the ongoing saga of the Phoenix entity although Pak promised that "this is not going to be a Jean Grey resurrection story. It's too early for her to come back, both in terms of her story and the Marvel U." However, Pak did promise that fans of classic Jean Grey Phoenix tales by Chris Claremont and Grant Morrison would love the series. Particularly, Pak wanted to explore threads from Morrison's New X-Men and "the dark corners of the things he created. I'll say one word: Cuckoos. And it's going to be very trippy." * The creative pairing of writer David Hine and cover artist Juan Doe carries over from X-Men: The 198 into July's Civil War: X-Men #1, which Quesada said would cover what happens with the X-Men during the summer Civil War event. Yanick Paquette will provide interior art for the mini-series with a preview image by Doe featuring X-Man Bishop and the tagline "Battle for the 198." * Perhaps one of Marvel's most surprising success stories of the past year, New X-Men received a glowing recommendation from all on the panel as the one X-Men book more people should be checking out. The fan-favorite teen melodrama currently under the stewardship of Craig Kyle and Chris Yost will see legendary X-Men villains Rev. William Stryker and futuristic Sentinel Nimrod making an attack on the X- mansion In July's New X-Men #28. Paco Medina is now the ongoing artist on the book, whom Cebulski said is "doing phenomenally." * Craig Kyle and Chris Yost are writing a new X-23 mini series which sums up the events leading from her time with Weapon X to the events that transpired in NYX. ------------------------ Yahoo!
