Comic Book Breaks New Ground In Use of Interactive Online
Content!

What if the fictional characters of the story you were reading
suddenly began to contact you, through phone calls, email and
instant messages, and even at actual real world meetings? What if
they presented themselves as real and involved you in their lives
and struggles, so that you actually changed the world in which
they lived? What if there were items that you found or that
arrived at your home, that were important to those characters and
their stories, and vital to the things they were trying to
achieve? Would it still be just a story? Or would it become
something more?

Many comic fans looking for something for something new in the
world of comics. Not just new characters, or flashy graphics, but
a level of interactivity never before attempted in the medium.
After breaking new ground with Audi's Art of the Heist, the
original online Chasing The Wish game, and many others, Dave
Szulborski is at it again. New Fiction Publishing is proud to
announce the release of Chasing The Wish Book One, the first of a
three issue graphic novel series based on the 2003 campaign by
the same name.

Chasing The Wish set new standards for realism, creativity,
interactivity, and immersion in the newly developing genre of
interactive online entertainment. The first game lasted six
months and incorporated three dozen fictional websites, as well
as dozens of real world items, interactions and events.
Throughout the campaign, over 10,000 people were attracted to and
played the game, and Chasing The Wish received international
press coverage in magazines, newspapers, and television reports.
Now, the Chasing the Wish comic book will be supported by and
fully integrated with the most extensive and interactive online
presence ever created for a comic book project, featuring
multiple fictional websites, completely interactive and
responsive characters, real world events, and items created
especially for the game.

The script is by Jason Stackhouse, adapted from the original
story and notes of Chasing The Wish creator Dave Szulborski, with
creative direction and coloring by James Curcio, and artwork by
comic veteran P. Emerson Williams. The book will be released for
purchase online on May 8, 2006, at a retail price of $8.00. It is
scheduled to be released in comic and book stores in June of

Abrams Signs Wimpy Kid

Abrams has announced the signing of its second graphic novel
taken from a Web comic, Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney.
by Heidi MacDonald, PW Comics Week -- Publishers Weekly,
 6/13/2006
Abrams has announced the signing of its second graphic novel
taken from a Web comic, Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. The
story follows the daily travails of a kid named Greg Heffley as
he tries to get through seventh grade, despite his brothers,
classmates and parents. The strip has been running since 2004 on
Funbrain.com, a children's site. Abrams has signed Kinney to a
three-book deal, with the first expected to appear sometime in
2007 through its young adult imprint Amulet.
Acquiring editor Charles Kochman also oversaw Abram's first Web
comic graphic novel, Brian Fies's Mom's Cancer. Kochman first
became acquainted with the project when Kinney approached him at
the New York Comic-con earlier this year. Kinney was showing
around a spiral-bound version of the strip and Kochman was
instantly hooked.
"This is the kind of book you dream about acquiring as an
editor," says Kochman. "Not only is it smart, funny, and well
drawn, but it comes with an already-established fan base online.
Jeff perfectly captures childhood, and his ear for dialogue is
uncanny, his art simple but not at all simplistic-his work
instantly relatable to kids of all ages, bringing us back in
time with a line of his pen and the turn of a phrase.
He sees the series as an opportunity for Abrams to expand upon
the success the Amulet Books division has had with New York
Times best-sellers like The Sisters Grimm, this time with a book
that has great graphic appeal."
Kinney already has some 1,000 pages of the story online. At
Funbrain, Wimpy Kid has already had some 15 million unique
readers. "It's a site that reaches tons of reluctant readers,"
says Kochman. "Kids look at it and teachers really get behind
it, too."

Kitchen, Lind Debut Agency, Packaging House
This story originally appeared in PW Comics Week on June 13,
2006
by Heidi MacDonald, PW Comics Week -- Publishers Weekly,

6/13/2006
Comics veteran Denis Kitchen has teamed with book designer John
Lind to form Kitchen, Lind & Associates, a new book packaging
and talent management concern that will put together graphic
novel projects, with an emphasis on young adult titles.
KLA is offering a soup-to-nuts range of services representing
properties to publishers and a complete array of book-packaging
support, from original concepts to production, marketing and
distribution.

Their initial projects include works by Eleanor Davis, Drew
Weing, Bernie Mireault and Todd Hignite. Davis and Weing are
both up-and-coming artists known for their mini-comics and Web
comics. Hignite is the editor of Comic Book Art magazine and the
author of the forthcoming In the Studio: Visits with
Contemporary Cartoonists from Yale Univ. Press. Mireault is a
comics veteran whose The Jam is highly regarded.

KLA launched at this weekend's MoCCA Festival, and both Lind and
Kitchen were on hand to talk about the venture and accept
submissions. According to Kitchen, they have already been
inundated with manuscripts from cartoonists who are looking to
get into the book market.

Although specific projects have yet to be announced, there are
several in the works. Davis is working on a children's book with
an emphasis on science, and Weing, whose Web comic "Pup" has a
devoted following, is working on an new project. Hignite's
efforts will be more scholarly in nature.

One of the areas that KLA will be concentrating on is books for
the YA market, which, as almost every observer has noted, is
still underserved by the non-manga genre. Kitchen hopes to give
an educational slant to some, as he feels there is great demand
for this from educators and librarians.

Lind and Kitchen already have some experience working with
children's material; and in fact, a child author-Kitchen's
daughter, eight-year-old Alexa, who has been cartooning since
she was five.

Alexa's Drawing Comics Is Easy (Except When It's Hard) debuted
at MoCCA, and definitely qualified as one of the biggest buzz
books of the show. At 176 pages, it's an exhaustive look at
creating comics from a seven-year-old's viewpoint-Alexa notes
her work has improved greatly since-covering such topics as
making comic strips funny, backgrounds and anatomy.

For her part, Alexa had a fine time at MoCCA, signing copies of
her book (they blew through nearly 100 copies) and meeting other
cartoonists. Father Denis, a cartoonist himself, seems almost
bemused by his prodigy. "She'll do it as long as she wants," he
says. Asked if she would stop, Alexa said, "Stop drawing comics?
Why would anyone ever want to drop drawing comics!"

Marking another bizarre turn in the saga of Georgia retailer
Gordon Lee, Rome prosecutors have drawn up a new indictment that
replaces the accusation CBLDF lawyers filed motions against
earlier this month.  The indictment was procured at a special
grand jury session earlier this month, and restates the charges
from the previous accusation filed in May.  This new development
marks the third time charges have been brought against Lee for
the accidental distribution of "Alternative Comics #2" in October
of 2004.  The previously announced June 15 motions hearing is
cancelled. Lee now must stand before a new arraignment on July 7,
after which his lawyers must re-file their motions.
Paul Cadle, Mr. Lee's counsel in Rome, says, "We believe this new
development arises from our Motion to Quash, which -- in layman's
terms -- relied upon Georgia law which requires that the
Defendant be re-indicted if new charges are brought out of the
same matters which have previously been presented to the Grand
Jury.  Accordingly, since Gordon was indicted initially by the
Grand Jury in the first case which was dismissed, he was entitled
to the same protection the second time.  The dismissal of the
second case embodied in the accusation and the new indictment
appear to be consistent with our position in the Motion to
Quash.  We will now have to again file motions for the new
arraignment, some of which may be new motions based upon the
continuing developments in the case."
Cadle adds, "It is highly unusual to have a single defendant face
three arraignments in less than two years for the same alleged
criminal conduct.  In my fifteen years of practice, I have never
seen such an occurrence."
Under the current indictment, Lee still faces two misdemeanor
counts of distributing Harmful to Minors materials - a charge
carrying penalties of fines for up to $1,000 and up to a year in
prison.  To date, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has spent
over $60,000 defending Mr. Lee.  To support the Fund's defense of
Gordon Lee, please make a donation at www.cbldf.org .

From Warren Ellis on his mailing list: BAD SIGNAL

BAD SIGNAL
meeeeeeeee

I have been engaged by the American cable company AMC to write
the half-hour pilot for a TV series I created.  The contract
calls the show "black comedy/science fiction."
Christina Wayne at AMC, who, along with Vlad Wolynetz has just
been unreasonably good to deal with, recently described it as a
"sf/entertainment-industry 'dramedy'."

As with all TV Things, everything could go horribly wrong.  But
this is the deal I've been waiting for, with people who
understand the project and format I want to work in.  And
you know something's going right when people in TV are telling
you to go more experimental and take more risks.    This isn't
your US network TV experience.

I'm writing the pilot at the moment.  (And I should particularly
thank Joss Whedon and John Rogers for their insights into the
process.)  More details will hopefully follow as the project
progresses.  Or, you know, a tearstained screed if it doesn't.

Marvel Defection Deals Blow to Shares

Entertainment Firm Takes Hits As Film Unit's Head Shifts Roles;
Plans for 10 Movies in Next Decade

By KATE KELLY and MERISSA MARR
 June 12, 2006; Page C1

Marvel Entertainment Inc.'s knockout blows usually come from
superheroes in comic books and movies. But recent developments in
the company's executive suite may look to some of Marvel's
investors like a sucker punch.

The New York company late last month announced that Avi Arad,
longtime head of Marvel's film division and a creative force
behind box-office juggernauts like "Spider-Man" and the "X-Men"
series, had resigned to take on a new role as an independent
movie producer and consultant to the company. Marvel
Entertainment shares dropped nearly 4% to $19.10 on the day of
the news.

Hours later, there was another surprise: Mr. Arad's sale of more
than three million shares of his own company stock, the majority
of his position. Marvel shares dropped an additional percentage
point the following day, with one prominent research analyst
calling Mr. Arad's new arrangement a "questionable deal for
shareholders."

Since then the stock has inched higher, buoyed by a $100 million
share-repurchase program that was completed last week and a
recent agreement by Marvel's largest holder, Chief Executive
Isaac Perlmutter, not to sell shares while a new repurchasing
effort is under way. Marvel's shares fell 11 cents to $19.63
Friday in New York, giving Marvel a market value of more than
$1.6 billion.

In an interview, Mr. Arad attributed his sale to estate-planning
needs, saying: "There's never a good time to sell stock." Marvel
Vice Chairman Peter Cuneo said Mr. Arad's move didn't reflect on
the company.

Mr. Arad, 59 years old, made significant contributions to the
"Spider-Man" franchise and others, studio executives say. "Avi is
one of the top movie executives in Hollywood," Mr. Cuneo said.
"His earning power greatly increased, and it was not possible for
the company to match what he can make as an independent
producer."

The angst surrounding Mr. Arad's departure underscores the
crossroads at which the comic-book publisher finds itself. After
years of pocketing revenue from licensing its characters to toy
makers and Hollywood studios, Marvel last year unveiled plans to
make its own comic-based films through the studio division that
Mr. Arad oversaw. Using a $525 million credit facility raised by
Merrill Lynch & Co., Marvel plans to release 10 pictures over the
next decade.

While a slew of box-office hits could usher in years of revenue
growth, the risks inherent to movie production -- especially
without the studio division's longtime leader at its helm --
could make the company more vulnerable than ever to losses from
expensive films that fall flat.

"Avi was the creative force behind Marvel's studio, and he was
going to be an important part of their efforts to get into live-
action production," said Lowell Singer, an analyst at Cowen &
Co., who has a "neutral" rating on the stock. Now, "the company
has a lot of challenges ahead of it." (Mr. Singer doesn't own
Marvel shares, and Cowen doesn't have a business relationship
with Marvel.)

Marvel's net income slid to $102.8 million last year from $124.9
million in 2004, when it had a "Spider-Man" movie. With just one
Marvel-inspired theatrical movie in release this year, "X-Men:
The Last Stand," analyst projections for net income in 2006 are
markedly lower -- in the $50 million ballpark.

While farming out Marvel's characters and stories capped the
company's risk by guaranteeing the company income from licensing
while avoiding production costs, it also constrained profit.

That was acceptable when Marvel was emerging from U.S.
bankruptcy-court proceedings in the late 1990s, but became more
difficult to digest as franchises like "Spider-Man" hit pay dirt.
Sony Corp.'s Sony Pictures Entertainment, which produced the film
and a similarly popular sequel in 2004, made hundreds of millions
of dollars in ticket sales alone. Although Marvel has been
publishing comic books since 1939 and is toying with new
strategies for making the business more profitable, growth has
been modest in recent years.

Mr. Arad will stay on as a creative adviser to Marvel for the
rest of 2006, as he gets his production company, Avi Arad
Productions, up and running, according to Marvel. Next year, he
will remain involved with certain Marvel movies, notably "Spider-
Man 3." The company hasn't indicated whether it plans to offer
him a new advisory contract.

After the huge success of the first "Spider-Man," Mr. Arad helped
renegotiate Marvel's deal with Sony, but also cut himself a
producer deal that gives him a personal financial stake in the
series -- an arrangement common among independent producers, but
less so for executives of a licensing company.

Speaking to investors in a conference call last week, Mr. Arad
attributed his job switch to a desire for more time to spend on
Marvel's movies. In an interview, he added that Marvel has a
strong team in place to take over corporate duties, an aspect of
the job he wasn't fond of.

Mr. Arad will be richly rewarded in his new role. In the
conference call with investors after last month's announcement,
Mr. Cuneo acknowledged that Mr. Arad "would share in the revenues
from ... the release of a film." In subsequent interviews Messrs.
Arad and Cuneo declined to comment on the percentage to which Mr.
Arad would be entitled.

The company said it will monitor the costs of each film, similar
to other studios, and this "performance based" structure aligns
Mr. Arad's interests with those of Marvel.
