His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] THE BEST LAID PLANS BATMAN was becoming quite the popular comic book hero in 1939 but usually fought mediocre villains. A great hero calls for a great villain and writer BILL FINGER and artist JERRY ROBINSON came up with THE JOKER. The clown prince of crime was too good for one story, so two were written and illustrated for DETECTIVE COMICS, and then both were slated for Batman's own comic, BATMAN #1. The editors at DC read them just before printing, and hurriedly changed the ending of the second story. Originally the Joker was to have died from his self inflicted knife wound in his chest. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [17] HYPE! & LINKS Section Various THIS WEEK'S LINKS These are the website URLS to the regular items that are usually here every week or two: World Wide Web Home Page http://members.aol.com/ComicBkNet Yahoo Group CBEM http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ComicBookNetworkEmag Trivia sponsors: Discount Comic Book Service http://www.dcbservice.com That's Entertainment http://www.thatse.com News: Diamond Comics http://www.diamondcomics.com Marvel http://www.Marvel.com DC Comics http://www.dccomics.com The PULSE http://www.comicon.com/pulse/ Comics Continuum http://www.comicscontinuum.com/ Newsarama http://www.Newsarama.com/ X-Fan http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/ The Comic Wire http://www.comicbookresources.com/ ICV2 http://www.ICV2.com The SCOOP! http://scoop.diamondgalleries.com/ Alternative Comics http://www.indyworld.com/altcomics All The Rage http://www.SilverBulletComicBooks.com Lying in the Gutters http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/ Columns: New Comics Releases http://www.comiclist.com X-Fan Reviews http://www.comixfan.com/xfan Paul Dale Roberts http://www.jazmaonline.com/ Richard Vasseur http://www.jazmaonline.com/ Michael Vance http://www.starland.com/sus Mark Allen Jonathan A. Diamond Announces Improvements to Reorders Online's Item Search Function As a result of retailer suggestions, the Item Search function of Reorders Online features expanded, clearer options with regard to searching for In Stock product. This clarification concerns where product will be checked and sold from first, which will give retailers a better idea of how long it will take to get their order. In addition, retailers can now set these new options as default Reorders Online parameters. Previously, retailers were offered a choice between: . Search for: Only items with onhand quantity . Search for: Onhand quantity, Available Soon, Backorderable and Unavailable items With the improvement, retailers now have the following choices: . Search Only Memphis In-Stock Items . Search Only My Local Warehouse In-Stock Items . Search All In-Stock Items . Search All (Out of Stock, Backorderable, Available Soon) Further, Diamond has added a clarification to the top of Reorders Online's Item Search page with regard to Reships from the Memphis Distribution Center. Previously, the text at the top read: . Reship Memphis, Tennessee product through my local distribution center . Ship Memphis, Tennessee product directly to my store With the improvement, the text now reads: . Reship Memphis, Tennessee product through my local distribution center (sell Local location onhand product first) . Ship Memphis, Tennessee product directly to my store (sell Memphis onhand product first) To set these new options as your Reorders Online defaults, visit the Web Preferences page of Diamond Online's Retailer Services Area, then enter your applicable account number and click the "Submit" button. (Please Note: Retailers with only one account number need only click the "Submit" button.) You will then be redirected to the main Web Preferences page, the top of which displays the following Reorders Online Options: . Search Stock Options . Allow back orders? . Suppress thumbnail pictures in search? . Direct ship (uncheck to reship with regular weekly shipment)? . Show only parent items during search? . Review uploaded order before confirmation? . P/O Number required? With the exception of the first option, to make any of these your defaults simply click the box to the left of the applicable line. In the case of the first option, select your desired default from the pull-down menu. Retailers with further questions about this announcement should contact their Diamond Customer Service Representative. Diamond Lowers GST for Canadian Customers Beginning July 1 In response to retailer inquiries, Diamond has confirmed that Canadian customers will be charged a lower Goods & Services Tax (GST) beginning July 1, when the Canadian government officially reduces the GST from 7% to 6%. The rate change will automatically take effect on July 1, and will match the 6% tax stipulated by Canadian law. "We've received a lot of questions about the lower GST, and wanted to assure our Canadian customers that we're aware of the change, and that it will be reflected in our system effective July 1," said Diamond Customer Service Team Leader - Canada Donald Major. Retailers with further questions about this announcement should contact their Diamond Customer Service Representative. New Previews on Windows Patch Now Available for Download Users of Previews on Windows (POW) are advised that a new patch is now available for the program. Available at https://retailer.diamondcomics.com/main/pow.asp, and dubbed Version 1.01q (v.1.01q), the patch fixes a problem in earlier POW versions regarding Offered Again items. Previously, non-Star Code Offered Again items would not display in the top right-hand corner of the ordering screen, while Offered Again items with Star Codes would. (Please Note: Star Code items refer to products whose item codes begin with the letters "STAR.") Now, all Offered Again items will appear in the top right-hand corner of the ordering screen, making it easier than ever to differentiate those products. While not a mandatory patch, POW v.1.01q is recommended for any retailer who previously had difficulty determining which products were or were not Offered Again in a given month. Previews on Windows is Diamond Comic Distributors' next-generation program designed for retailers using the Windows operating system. With POW, you can place and track your orders, immediately upload orders to Diamond's online order fulfillment system, check in your receivings and much more. 1966 Greenspring Drive, Suite 300 Timonium, MD 21093 Phone (410) 560-7100 FAX: (410) 560-7148 . www.diamondcomics.com DIAMOND COMIC DISTRIBUTORS, INC.- the world's largest distributor of English-language comic books and related merchandise - is based in Timonium, MD, with strategically located Distribution Centers servicing more than 4,000 specialty retailers worldwide. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] THE BEST ENDING OF ALL It was once rare that television or comic book series knew that things were coming to an end, and had a closing episode to say goodbye to all the characters. The producers of THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN certainly did though, and the writers created a perfect and even sentimental ending to the beloved adventure show. In ALL THAT GLITTERS, Professor Pepperwinkle invents a machine that can manufacture gold, and some crooks try to hijack it. Jimmy gets conked on the head by a sandbag, and dreams a sequence where he and Lois take "Positive Kryptonite" pills and acquire powers like Superman. Eventually the Man of Steel saves the day and the cast assembles in Perry's office for the close. Jimmy remembers his dream and says "Gosh, Mister Kent. You'll never know how wonderful it is to be like Superman!" Reeves sighs and says "No Jimmy, I guess I never will." --------------- Goodbye to all the readers of CBEM.
