HEROES CON: DC COMICS' 52 PANEL CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Jann Jones, assistant editor of the weekly 52 series, told the crowd at DC Comics' 52 panel at Heroes Con on Saturday that an impressive list of artists has been lined up for back-up features. Among those contributing will be Eric Powell, Brian Bolland, Adam Hughes, George Perez, Kevin Nowlan and Jones' husband, 52 cover artist J.G. Jones. As far as interiors go, DC's Dan DiDio said that having Keith Giffen doing breakdowns gives 52 a consistent look, despite whomever is penciling. "He can take so much information and put it out in a cohesive manner," DiDio said, noting that he didn't want a "jarring" issue-to-issue approach to the book despite the several pencilers. "I've been watching the art come in and we're not compromising anything to get this out on a weekly basis," Jann Jones added. Greg Rucka, one of the four 52 writers, noted that several additional artists have inquired about contributing to the project. "Some of them are quite surprising," Rucka said. "And I'm like, 'You're a big name? Why would you?'" DiDio said that cover artist Jones attends all the story meetings and sketches during the discussions. One of his sketches, of Detective Chimp, led to a new story angle -- one that DiDio noted conflicted with Shadowpact. And while DC won't do any 52 collections until the series is over -- nor has it announced any plans -- DiDio suggested that a coffee table book of Jones' story-telling covers with sketches might be a good post-52 project. In other notes from the panel: * DiDio broke down what he felt the writers of 52 brought to the table: Rucka, a sense of realism and a look at the DCU from the ground up; Geoff Johns, a sense of moving the characters forward to where they should go; Mark Waid, a sense of history and where characters have been; and Grant Morrison, who "is just way out there." Rucka added, "Grant has more good ideas in an afternoon than I do all year." * Rucka said that 52 is like a novel and should have a theme. In this case, he said the primary goal is to see "on the whole, how the DC Universe has changed." * The Resurrection Cult was not part of the original plan for the story, and Rucka said that it took over from Conner's sacrifice as the religious aspect intended for 52. * Rucka noted that while the characters' arcs have a beginning, middle and end, not all them will end with the 52nd issue. * Asked why Batman is such a jerk in All Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder, DiDio said: "It was Frank Miller's decision. You don't like it, you call him. I'm not going to make that call." * DiDio said that the concept developed for Captain Marvel since the 1970s "hasn't worked" and the challenge DC faces is making him contemporary but to true to his character. * J.G. Jones added that members of the Marvel Family will be key to a 52 story. * Regarding Batman, DiDio said that he wants to emphasize the Bruce Wayne part of the character more. He also said that Batman's strike team had become "too far-reaching" and that the character works best with Robin, Alfred and Gordon on his side. * DiDio said the Oracle/Batman relationship became bad for Batman and he's pulling the plug on it. "It was like Batman had OnStar," he said. "He stopped being Batman." * Rucka said Elongated Man's story in 52 is spiritual. "His story is about the fact that Sue is dead in a world where people come back from the dead with alarming frequency," he said. * Rucka said the racial aspects of John Henry Irons were going to be part of 52, but that it didn't materialize. "You never tell stories like that if they become Afterschool Specials," he said. "If you can't do it right, it's better not to do it." * J.G. Jones confirmed that was Isis on a 52 cover. But DiDio noted it wasn't the television version because DC doesn't own the rights. * Black Adam's death toll in 52? "Massive," DiDio said. But then Rucka noted, "By the end of 52, you're probably going to cry for Black Adam." * In regards to pacing, Rucka said concessions have to be made in a 22-page story and that stories can't end with cliffhangers. He also noted that some things -- like the effects of Renee Montoya's have to be assumed off-panel. "I'm sure we all know Renee is going, 'Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!'" he said. Rucka said that it's hard and fast that story beings with Week 1, Day 1 and ends with Week 52, Day 7. "It's an interesting thing to deal with when you have people who can, say, travel through time," he said. * DiDio said the back-ups for 52 were to provide supplemental information without overloading readers. * DiDio said that any similarities between the "Up, Up and Away!" story in the Superman books and Superman Returns were coincidental. He said he did not read the movie script, wanting to the film as a fan. * DiDio said there will be a Zauriel one-shot early next year. HEROES CON: MARVEL COMICS PANEL CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Civil War event and its repercussions were the primary themes of Marvel Comics' panel at Heroes Con, led by editor-in-chief Joe Quesada, on Saturday. Following are some of the highlights. * Asked about a Nova ongoing following Annihilation, Quesada said that it was a "possibility" and that "certain things" will break out of Annihilation. * Quesada said the Winter Soldier will play "a very big part in the world of Marvel super-heroes and Captain America." * Daniel Way, writer of the new Ghost Rider series, said the situation with Danny Ketch will be resolved, but the book will feature Johnny Blaze. Way said he's been bowled over by the art on Ghost Rider by javier Saltares and Mark Texeira. "It's like they've been waiting for their triumphant return," he said. * Spirits of Vengeance, by Garth Ennis and Clayton Crain, will be a series of mini-series. * Quesada said an announcement regarding Bryan Hitch's next project after Ultimates 2 should come this summer. * Amazing Spider-Man writer J. Michael Straczynski on Peter Parker's unmasking: "He really can't recant the revealing of his identity. There's no going back on that." * Civil War Front Line writer Paul Jenkins said an upcoming story will see a foreign team of super-heroes setting down in the United States. "They're going to say, 'We're not of your country. Come and arrest us,'" Jenkins said. * Straczynski noted one character will leave the United States rather than deal with registration. "He'll say, 'I'm going to Paris,' which is what he'll do," Straczynski said. * Even with the upcoming wedding of Black Panther and Storm, Quesada said the title will remain Black Panther. * Stracyznski said his Icon title, The Book of Lost Souls, will continue, with #7 due in two months. * C.B. Cebulski said that Power Pack and Avengers Assemble! is doing very well outside the direct market and will be followed by a Power Pack/Spider-Man mini-series. He also said the Power kids might be showing up in the Marvel Universe proper soon. * Jenkins said he has many more ideas for The Sentry and his role in the Marvel Universe. * Will Alpha Flight return? "Yes and no," Quesada said. "You're going to love it and you're going to hate it." * Quesada said he finished penciling the final issue of Daredevil: Father two months ago, but his inker and colorist had more pressing monthly deadlines. He expects the issue this fall. * Quesada said that there are no plans for additional Ultimate titles, but there will be a big event in the universe. * Straczynski hinted that the upcoming Ultimate Power event might result in some characters switching universe after it is over. * Quesada said that Greg Pak is the writing on Incredible Hulk for "the foreseeable future." MARVEL MOVIE/TV ROUNDUP Newly released pictures by WireImage indicate that two key players from Spider-Man will be involved in Spider-Man 3. Cliff Robertson is returning as Uncle Ben and Michael Papajohn is back as the burglar who apparently killed him. Robertson and Pajajohn were photographed with Thomas Haden Church, who playing Flint Marko/Sandman. * As had been previously announced, Mark Protosevich is writing the Thor movie, Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige told The Continuum. Over the weekend at a Marvel panel at Heroes Con, J. Michael Straczynski said that the trades were reporting that David Goyer was attached to the film. That isn't the case, according to Marvel. Goyer is working with Marvel Studios on Blade: The Series. He is also developing The Flash as a feature film for Warner Bros. * Iron Man director Jon Favreau attended the screening of Ultimate Avengers 2 at the Los Angeles Film Festival on Sunday. +++++ From Newsarama at http://www.Newsarama.com/ BANDAI ACQUIRES RIGHTS TO WITCHBLADE TAKERU MANGA Press Release Bandai Entertainment Inc. announced Monday at Anime Expo that it has acquired the North American publishing rights for the Witchblade Takeru manga from Top Cow Productions, Inc. creators of Witchblade. "That's right: It's now SIXTY-FOUR BIG PAGES - and we're not charging you a dollar more," Larsen explained. "Originally I'd planned to cap it out at 40 or even 42 story pages. However, Franchesco! and I couldn't stop, so we ran out of ample space to show off all the cool behind-the-scenes stuff. With the addition of sixteen sketchbook pages we're now able to give readers a peek at the hard work we did." "Don't say we never gave you anything!" Franchesco! exclaimed. As if the increased size wasn't enough, the SHE-DRAGON special now leads directly into SAVAGE DRAGON #128, which features those lovable lawbreakers from Mark Millar and J.G. Jones' caustic classic WANTED. "Sometimes things are better with time and this special is no different," said Larsen. "While I'm sorry folks had to wait so darned long, the end result is so much better because of the extra effort. This book is absolutely stunning." With the stunning SHE-DRAGON statue slated to come out later this year and rumblings of a follow up miniseries, this looks like a banner year for the green-skinned goddess. SHE-DRAGON (DEC041542) is available for advance re-order. It is now a 64-page full color book with a cover price of $5.99 and will be in stores on July 26th. +++++ From ComiX-Fan at http://www.comixfan.com/xfan SUPERMAN RETURNS FLIES TO FIRST PLACE AT THE BOX OFFICE Superman Returns reigned supreme at the box office this weekend, taking in $52.15 million over opening weekend and $84.2 million since its debut on Wednesday, according to studio estimates Sunday as reported by several online sources. Warner Brothers' head of distribution predicted that the film should hit $110 million by Tuesday. The premiere is the largest five-day opening in Warners' history. With little competition over the weekend, Superman easily cruised to first place at the box office. The Devil Wears Prada came in second with a stronger than expected $27 million, while Click fell from first to third with $19.4 million. Superman Returns was released in 4,065 theaters, averaging $12,829 per screen, best among the Top 10 films at the box office. The film simultaneously premiered very strong in 76 IMAX theaters, most playing a version with portions of the film in 3- D. About $5 million of the film's grosses came from the IMAX theaters. Superman Returns strong premiere topped last year's Batman Begins, also from DC Comics and Warner Bros., which took in $48.7 million over opening weekend and $72.9 million in its first five days. The film didn't come close to Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man 2, though, which holds the record for best five-day opening, with $152.4 million over Fourth of July weekend in 2004. Superman Returns also fell short of X-Men: The Last Stand, the year's other big comic book film. X-Men opened at $103.1 million over the three-day Memorial Day weekend earlier this year, though the film's box office quickly fell off in the following weeks. Superman Returns will face heavy competition next week with the release of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. +++++ From ICV2.com Will Meugniot Will Direct 'Dragonlance' Animated Feature July 06, 2006 The Dragonlance animated feature, starring Lucy Lawless as Goldmoon (see "Dragonlance Cartoon from Paramount"), is slated for theatrical release in August 2007. The story is based on Dragons of Autumn Twilight, the first Dragonlance Chronicles book by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. The Dragonlance movie is being directed by longtime animator/comic writer Will Meugniot, who's directed Stargate: Infinity, Spydogs, and other TV shows; produced X-Men, Spider-Man Unlimited, Real Ghostbusters, Exosquad and a number of other animated series; and held a variety of creative and production executive positions at Universal Family Entertainment, Stan Lee Media, DIC Entertainment, Graz Productions, and Saban Entertainment. The film's script is by George Strayton, whose TV writing credits include Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and Cleopatra 2525. In addition to Lawless, Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor on Smallville, plus voice work on Justice League, Teen Titans, Static Shock, and Batman Beyond) has been cast as Tanis Half- Elven, and Jason Marsden (who has an extensive list of voice credits, including Fairly Oddparents, Xiaoliln Showdown, Teen Titans, Codename Kids Next Door, and W.I.T.C.H.) as Tasslehoff Burrfoot. Three production companies are involved: India-headquartered Toonz Animation; Epic Entertainment, which has a variety of other game-based properties in development, including Deadlands, Magic, Urban Arcana, and World of Darkness; and Commotion Pictures. Stone Arch to Release 24 Graphic Novels in August Including Classics July 06, 2006 Stone Arch Books, which publishes "high interest fiction" for 8- to 14-year-olds for the library and educational markets, has entered the graphic novel business in a big way, planning 24 new releases in August to join the 15 it published earlier this year. All of the releases through the end of this year will be hardbound for libraries, but trade paperback editions are planned beginning early in 2007. Stone Arch was promoting its new line at the recently concluded ALA show in New Orleans with booth signage announcing "safe graphic novels," which a representative explained meant that the content was kid-safe for an educational or library environment. The graphic novel line involves five imprints: Graphic Sparks (8-10, "goofy, gross"), Graphic Trax (8-12, "thrills"), Graphic Quest (8-12, "pulse-pounding"), Graphic Revolve (10-14, classics), and Ridge Riders (8-12). Although we haven't seen a lot of pages from either the planned or released books, at least some of these books appear to be re- packaged from previously published children's books. The classics looked the most interesting to us; six are planned for release in August. They appear to be all new material pairing children's/YA authors with artists that are mostly new to comics. But the art on some of the books looked interesting, and we're always on the lookout for a good new classics series. Each volume will be 72 6" x 9" pages in color, which hardbound will be sold to libraries and schools at $16.95. Two More Dynamite Previews in 'TV Guide' 'Highlander' #0 and 'Xena' #1 July 06, 2006 TV Guide will feature previews of two Dynamite Entertainment TV- based comic titles in its July 10th issue, which streets July 6th. The two titles featured are both shipping this month: Xena #1 and Highlander #0. The first Dynamite preview in TV Guide was for its Battlestar Galactica preview issue. Vampire Hunter D Manga Out in English First! July 07, 2006 Digital Manga announced at Anime Expo that a Vampire Hunter D manga is currently in production in Japan and will be released in late 2007 or early 2008. At Anime Expo Digital Manga's Rachel Livingston told the audience that the Vampire Hunter D manga would be published in English even before it appears in Japanese. The Vampire Hunter D manga will be based on the series of 17 novels (the first of which appeared in 1983) written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano. Three of the novels have been published in English by Dark Horse -- and they have been extremely successful, especially in the bookstore market, where they rank in the top 20 when compared with sales of the top manga properties. The Vampire Hunter D novels have inspired several anime features, illustration books and a hit PS2 video game, but they have never been adapted to the manga format until now. Mr. Kikuchi specifically chose artist Saiko Takaki to illustrate the Vampire Hunter D manga. Scholastic's Skein of Graphic Novels Includes 'The Last Unicorn' July 07, 2006 In addition to its color reprinting of Jeff Smith's Bone and graphic novels based on the popular Baby-Sitters Club and Goosebumps series, Scholastic's Graphix imprint is planning at least five additional graphic novel projects over the next couple of years, including Amulet (Fall 2007) by Kazu Kibuishi, editor of the Flight anthologies, and an adaptation of Peter S. Beagle's fan-favorite fantasy The Last Unicorn (Fall 2008) illustrated by Michael Kaluta. Other Scholastic graphic novel projects include Walker Bean, a rollicking pirate tale by Aaron Renier due out in the spring of 2008; Magic Pickle by Scott Morse, which is scheduled for the summer of 2008; and The Woodland Chronicles by Greg Ruth (Conan the Barbarian) due out in the fall of 2009. Scholastic has also announced the artists who will be working on the next two Goosebumps anthologies. Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother), Jamie Tolagson and Amy Kim Ganter will illustrate Goosebumps: Terror Trips (Spring 2007); while Kyle Baker (Plastic Man), Ted Naifeh (Courtney Crumrin) and Dean Haspiel (The Quitter) will draw the third Goosebumps graphic novel anthology, Goosebumps: Scary Summer (Summer 2007). 'Eberron' Comic in August From Devil's Due July 07, 2006 This August Devil's Due Publishing unveils the first comic book ever based on the Eberron RPG from Wizards of the Coast. Eberron RPG creator Keith Baker has written the 48-page, full color comic, Eberron: Eye of the Wolf, which will be available in two editions, one with a regular cover ($4.95) by series' artist Chris Lie (Sigma 6, Arashikage Showdown) and one with a cardstock cover ($8.95) by Lee Moyer (the Eberron campaign setting artist). This is the first Devil's Due Publishing release to add to the rich tapestry of the Dungeons & Dragons world rather than just adapting prose works based on D&D properties. Eberron: Eye of the Wolf is a one-shot comic book thrill ride through the world of magic and sentient machines created by Keith Baker, and developed by Bill Slavicsek and James Wyatt. +++++ From The SCOOP! at http://scoop.diamondgalleries.com/ Philadelphia Comic-Con This Sunday Industry News, Scoop, Friday, July 07, 2006 This Sunday, at the Ramada Philadelphia Airport, Pennsylvanian's can check out one of the area's fun and informative events for collectors--the Philadelphia Comic-Con.
