Editor's Blurb.

Hi there folks!

Welcome to all my new and regular readers,

I'm sorry last week's ezine was a day late!

Zinester appears to have had a problem with their server on Monday evening and I was unable to gain access to their site where I publish from.

This week I have gone back to the sea with articles about the penguins at Boulders beach near Simonstown  and the yacht Shosoloza which carries the hopes of South Africans  in the 2007 Americas Cup.

I hope you enjoy them.

I have some nice photos of the penguins in the web version of this ezine.

You'll find them at Http://www.turtlesa.com/ezine124.html

Thanks once again for reading this newsletter.

Shosholoza

Who will ever forget the two South African yachtsman Bertie Reed and John Daly

These two men were competing against each other in a single handed around the world race when John's boat  capsized in the deep Southern Ocean and he was marooned there many miles from land and no way to get home.

Bertie Reed  a long time buddy of John decided to give up his position in the race and go to John's assistance.

Had he not done so John would have lost his life.

Such is the expertise of South African yachtsmen that they can rescue a fellow sailor in distress in the middle of the southern ocean in a storm.

South Africa has always had these expert yachtsmen, yet in the 153 years of the America Cup Racing Africa and more particularly South Africa has not had an opportunity to compete against the greatest yachtsmen in the world.

That's all going to change.

In 2007 South Africa will compete against the world's best yachtsmen in the European ???Americas cup regattas??? which will be held off the coast of Spain.

South Africa has entered a yacht named Shosaloza .

During some preparatory regattas  in October/ November 2004  Shosoloza competed against some of the teams that will sail in the Americas Cup.

The team using an old boat did very well  in the regattas they took part in and arrived back in South Africa in high spirits.

Because of their showing sponsors have come forward and a new  state of the art boat  has been designed and is being  built  here in South Africa for the race,

In the meantime the old Shosoloza boat is being put to good use in Table Bay to train team members for the race.

Unfortunately in early February while sailing at about 10 knots under spinnaker the yacht struck a Southern Right whale full on and the boat stopped dead in the water.

Two crew members who were steering the boat at the time  were both flung headlong into the steering wheels and sheered them off with the impact.

One crewman went overboard and was picked up later by a chase boat which was following the yacht.

Two of the crew were quite seriously injured and  others had bumps and bruises.

There was  some structural damage to the keel and hull  causing  the boat  to be taken out of the water for repairs.

Good news is that the boat is back in the water and the team are out training again.

Another happy event is that the Shosoloza team have been given a  new 2000 square metre training base in the Royal Yacht club in Cape Town.

It's a far cry from their old base which was two metal  containers stacked on top of each other.

To celebrate the opening of the new  sailing and training centre  an event was held on Robben Island.

Shosoloza's sponsors have also set up a South African-German youth exchange called ??? Sailing without borders??? where twenty young sailors from Germany and  twenty from South Africa will be given an opportunity of training in South Africa and Germany.

Promising young athletes between the ages of 13 and 22  will be supported in three boat categories: Optimist, 420 and Laser.

What a great experience for the youth of both countries.

The Boulders

Boulders beach  is situated about two kilometres outside the main village of Simonstown has over the last few years become a tourist attraction.

Every tour party that goes to Cape Point stops off at this quaint little beach with its large boulders and safe swimming.

Why?

The penguins!

A number of years ago two penguins arrived on this beach  and made it their home.

Their arrival started a breeding colony of Jackass penguins and now there are hundreds of them.

The penguins have established themselves on the hillside above the beach and have dug themselves nests in the sand  and under the bushes where they lay their eggs and raise their chicks.

In South Africa, penguin colonies are mainly found on islands along our coastline and here at the Boulders is the first mainland colony.

Penguins are cute as they waddle up and down the beach looking like little soldiers in their black and white uniforms.

What is unique at the boulders is that the public can get very close to them and in fact in places share the beach with them.

The penguins go about their business between the sun worshippers  and people swimming  just off the beach.

On both sides of the beach wooden walkways have been built which allow people to see the penguins without disturbing them.

When they are nesting and have chicks people on the beach would surely step on their eggs and chicks.

As with any such attraction the authorities have to earn a buck or two and charge R15.00 per adult and R5.00 per child to get onto the walkways.

For those who are not prepared to pay this fee to get up close there is  another legal way to see them.

A tarred pathway winds its way along the slopes of the mountain above the beach and if you follow it you will come across the breeding grounds of the penguins.

You are able to get up real close and see their eggs and chicks when they are breeding.

There are also some good views down onto the beach  where you can see the penguins communing with the people at the water's edge.

Standing looking down from one of these gaps I saw some sights last Sunday.

An old lady  dropped her costume without covering herself and proceeded to get dressed in front of everyone.

Another young lady decided it was a good spot for topless bathing.

Parents of young kids must have been having a fit.

It's summer in Cape Town and on a secluded beach like the Boulders I suppose everything goes!

Next time you visit Simonstown go and visit the penguins.

You will be glad you did.

See you there soon!
