In April 1997, Burlington won the Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The award honors efforts to revitalize downtowns. The city has also been ranked as one of the hippest arts towns in America by John Villani in his 1997 book, The 100 Best Small Art Towns.
