The first Moravians in North Carolina settled on 100,000 acres, 250 years ago, known as the Wachovia Tract. These German-speaking Protestants established the first colonial town known today as Bethabara Park. African-American residents also contributed to developing Winston-Salem. Simon Green Atkins conceived the idea of Slater Industrial Academy, now known as Winston-Salem State University. And agriculture in the form of R.J. and Katharine Smith Reynolds, tobacco barons, have also contributed to make Winston-Salem a unique tourist destination.
