Welcome to PottersMarks second November 2007 Newsletter

Iga Ware

Iga is unglazed, high-fired ware that first appeared in the 16th century in Iga
(Mie Prefecture).
The Iga kilns are said to have been established during the Keicho Era
(1596-1615) under the guidance of the Tsutsui and later the Toda daimyo
families, with the most famous kilns being the Makiyama and Marubashira.
Characteristic features of Iga Ware are scorch markings (koge) and a natural
flowing vitrified glaze (biidoro - after the Portuguese word for glass vidoro)
which sometimes stops to form a globule called a "dragonfly eye." For examples
of koge and biidoro, please click here. (http://www.e-yakimono.net/guide/html/
Iga ware is fired not far from its more famous neighbour Shigaraki. These two

Tomimoto Kenkichi (1886-1963) is one example of Japan's finest and most
influential ceramic artists, ever. Although Tomimoto is well known for his huge
ornamental works, in his own words he wished "to produce large quantities of
inexpensive vessels that have been designed by a true artist and manufactured
in a coordinated, well-organized pottery, in order that every kind of person,
in every kind of house can use it; inexpensive pottery that anybody can buy and
that nobody can afford to be without."

What are pots really about? It's obvious that here is a man who's been potting
all his life and by this time is well up in his seventies and the throwing,
never very good, is now really pathetic. Why do people still want to buy his
pots? There are always a number of people who say, I don't mind what sort of
pot it is as long as it has your name on it - forget them. If there's anything
good about your pots, what is it that's good? I think it's impossible to know,
it's not just fashion. Maybe one does inject something funny into it. I have
Chinese peasant pots that are tremendously admired by everybody. I used to
think how pathetic it was that the peasants who made them were so poor they
This means several things. Firstly the site is being looked at more than ever

PottersMarks.co.nz Decay?

EARLY WEDGWOOD, Tea Centre, August.

First exhibition of the Wedgwood Society: a small one, in the cases of the
foyer, but nicely selected from members' collections. A little yellow and green
teapot of Wolf Mankowitz's showed a discerning eye for an unpretentious piece.
Looking at these wares and noting their qualities in body, glaze and elegance,
one wonders how English fine earthenware became so degraded, unnoticed save by
specialists. It is a warning to hold on tenaciously to what little value we
have left from our traditions in art and industry before the foundations are
completely decayed and there is nothing to re-build. One would like to see a
group of students from the Royal College set up a workshop in the centre of the
industry and draw from it all that is best in craftsmanship and experience and
not become submerged and devitalised in design departments.
Bernard Palissy 1510-1590 approx "Studio Potter"

He is said to have been born about 1510, either at Saintes (/wiki/Saintes) or
Agen (/wiki/Agen), but both date and locality are uncertain. It has been
stated, on insufficient authority, that his father was a glass-painter and that
he served as his fathers apprentice. He tells us that he was apprenticed to a
glass-painter and that he also acquired in his youth the elements of
land-surveying. At the end of his apprenticeship he followed the general custom
and became a travelling workman; acquiring fresh knowledge in many parts of
France and the Low Countries, perhaps even in the Rhine (/wiki/Rhine) Provinces
of Germany (/wiki/Germany) and in Italy (/wiki/Italy).

About 1539 it appears that he returned to his native district and, having
married, took up his abode at Saintes (/wiki/Saintes). How he lived during the
first years of his married life we have little record except when he tells us,
