------------------------------- DID YOU KNOW? ------------------------------- A record 30,000 people filled the streets this past Sunday for the 22nd annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles, raising a total of $3,768,295. ------------------------------- PROGRESS UPDATE ------------------------------- This was a pretty easy week – only 10 miles. Only, right? I can barely believe it myself. Well, all us kids are getting pretty excited as we approach 26 miles and our final destinations (Florence and Honolulu). Most of us by this point have booked our flights and now we’re in the midst of planning what we’re going to do. I have to start planning. So to celebrate 10 miles becoming easy, here is my Top 10 list for why I like running in an AIDS Marathon: 10. My chances of ending up like Marlon Brando have significantly decreased. (I can eat, let me tell you.) 9. I can tell you the distance between places without an odometer. The length of marathon for most of us L.A. residents is simply called “morning commute.” 8. I no longer worry about being stranded without any money in this city. I can just run home if necessary. (Although I’m still gonna keep my AAA card.) 7. Not only have I met some amazing people, but seeing them every week gives me “the glass is half full” attitude towards life. And if I’m wrong, who cares? I’m too busy looking on the bright side. 6. I get to go to Italy. 5. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, yum. 4. Oranges, yum. 3. Did I mention that I get to go to Italy? 2. I get to help my friend, Stannie, and her family, keep Uncle Ronnie’s memory alive. 1. I’m affecting people’s lives in a positive way, possibly saving them, and without a doubt, keeping at least a handful of gay men looking fabulous. Oh-KAAY. (That affects us all, folks. Think about it.) Wow, I keep going with that list, all jokes aside. It has been such a positive experience for me. I hope you had a good laugh and I’ll see you next week! ------------------------------- ANNOUNCEMENTS ------------------------------- VOLUNTEERS MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE I haven’t mentioned this in awhile, but if we make it through our training / group runs thanks to water volunteers. While we need it every week, both at Griffith Park and in Santa Monica (Saturdays and Sundays), here are some select dates coming up where help will be vital. So please mark your calendars and come to volunteer or cheer. I would love to meet you! October 28 - 23-mile Celebration Run for Florence runners. As you can imagine, this run will require a lot of help. We’ll need about 30 volunteers for all times of the day for THIS run. Please know if you can only come out for part of the day, there will be 2 overlapping shifts. November 18 - 26-mile Celebration Run for Honolulu runners. We also need help for the Honolulu 26-mile run. Florence runners are welcome to volunteer after you complete your 8-mile run!! We will need about 20 volunteers for THIS run. I EARN $150 CREDIT!!! If you wanna get wild on at any training run… have a Themed Water Stop! AIDS Marathon will supply water, salt, first aid kit, trash bags and a spray bottle. You’ll need to bring a table, food and decoration. FOUR PEOPLE must be at the water stop at all times during the training run. We've seen some WILD water stops in the past including: Western, Martians, Mardi Gras, Sports Teams, Romans, Patriotic and lots of others. It's a great excuse to run amuck in costumes with water guns on an otherwise ordinary morning. Please email Jared Paul, our volunteer coordinator, at jpaul@aidsmarathon.com or call him at 213.201.1400 to sign up your volunteers. Please give him your first and last name, email address and phone number. Also mention my name and runner#, which LA-4119. If you can, try to email him by October 20th, but don’t let the date detour you. APLA CORNER This [past] Sunday, October 15, [was] National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, a time for all communities to acknowledge the impact of HIV/AIDS among Latino populations and the need for HIV testing and education within them. In Los Angeles, Latinos account for at least 45 percent of the population and 31 percent of all people living with AIDS in the county. Here at APLA, 36 percent of our clients self-identify as Latinos. Our experience with HIV prevention tailored to Latinos has led to the creation of Acci?n Mutua (Shared Action), a program funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Acci?n Mutua allows APLA to train other organizations across the western United States on how to reach and prepare HIV education for Latino populations. For more information about this important program, please visit the Research & Training pages of APLA.org. ----------------------------------------- RUNNER OF THE WEEK ----------------------------------------- READY, ON YOUR MARK, IT'S CHRISTINE CLARK! Probably one of the most inspiring marathon stories we have is of this amazing woman who first went to medical school, became a pathologist, had two kids and THEN decided in her 30's that marathoning would be "neat." Oh but that's not enough... Living in Alaska, she decided to do most all her training on a TREADMILL and then went on to WIN THE SEATTLE MARATHON in1995 with a time of 2:49:21! Other highlights of this amazing woman's running "hobby' include: Her victory at the 2000 Olympic Marathon Trials in Columbia, SC was one of the greatest upsets in U.S. Olympic Trials history where she won the Olympic Trials with a PR of 2:33:31 even though she had been seeded #22 - Clark's Olympic performance was made all the more impressive, considering she had suffered from plantar fascitis throughout much of the summer. That combined with the fact that Clark did pre-Olympic Trials training on a treadmill in her basement meant that the Olympic Trials victory brought a deluge of media interest, from the Today Show to Oprah Winfrey's magazine 'O'. -1999: 3rd at Twin Cities Marathon, USA Championship...won Anchorage Mayor's Midnight Sun Marathon for third time (also 1995 and 1998)... best of 2:40:38. -1998: 2nd at Portland Marathon...best of 2:47:14. -1996: 76th at Olympic Trials (2:51:07). ----------------------------------------- LINKS ----------------------------------------- Visit my blog – http://runnerla4119.blogspot.com Find out more about APLA – http://www.apla.org/ Make an online donation – http://www.aidsmarathon.com/participant.asp?runner=LA-4119&Year=2006&EventCode=FL06 And if you have a good, durable suitcase with wheels you are planning to donate, please consider passing it on to me :) Visit my Amazon Marketplace shop – http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/at-a-glance.html/002-2564014-4522461?seller=A1FZSVIGYMYZ50&marketplaceSeller=1 Download the flyer and spread the word – http://www.geocities.com/jrossini@sbcglobal.net/RossiniAIDSFlyer.pdf Visit me at MySpace – http://www.myspace.com/oldladyrossini ------------------------------------------------------ CONTACT ME / SUBSCRIPTION INFO ------------------------------------------------------ Jennifer Rossini runnerla4119@sbcglobal.net http://runnerla4119.blogspot.com |
