I. Article: Letting God Out
As time goes on, I get more and more in touch with the spiritual
side of my work. ? Actually, as time goes on, I??™m not sure there is
anything but that. ? Anyhow, this month??™s article is more spiritual
than most of the ones I write. ? While my understanding of God/
Spirit/Source may differ from yours, I hope this will
still speak to
you on some level. Spirit is always present in my work ??“ but it is
not necessary for you to call it by the same name I do. ? Regardless
of what group we may claim to belong to, I believe each of us has
a unique and personal relationship to our Creator ??“ as different as
snowflakes. ? And, at the same time, we are all family ??“ all part of
the whole ??“ no matter how different our understanding of Source.
So??¦with that disclaimer, here we go??¦
Many years ago, on Christmas Eve, I decided I no longer believed
in organized religion, and chose to forgo receiving Communion.
As I stood at the back of the church where my family had gone for
Midnight Mass, a gentleman who was converting to this faith asked,
???Can??™t you take part one last time, on Christmas???? ? I explained that
I felt that would be hypocritical. ? Ah ??“ self-righteous youth??¦
Fast forward about a dozen years ??“ I am now a struggling actor in
Los Angeles. ? A friend asks me to try his church, saying he thinks
I will really enjoy the service. ? I figured it couldn??™t hurt, and went.
When we met at the church on Sunday, he explained that he couldn??™t
sit with me, as he would be up singing with the choir. ? So he placed
me in the care of a friend of his??¦a woman I would sit next to in
church as a friend for the next eight months or so ??¦ before finally
asking her out on a date ??“ a woman who has now blessed my life
as my wife for nearly ten years. ? But??¦that??™s another story.
I really did enjoy the service, and continued attending. There was
a great community of young people, and I made a lot of new friends.
However, I still didn??™t receive Communion.
Then one Sunday, about seven months later, the pastor gave a homily
about a painting in a church in England. ? It was a painting of Jesus ??“
knocking on a giant door. ? The painting had been there for many
years, and eventually they decided to have it cleaned.
Upon removing the frame, they discovered there was a caption
written at the bottom of the painting:
???How long will you leave me outside knocking????
Well, that hit me, and I was moved by Spirit to let Him in. ? That
day, I took Communion again.
???But wait,???
you might say. ? ???I thought this article was called
???Letting God Out??™??¦????
Well, I had an interesting thought the other day. ? God (as you
understand God) is already inside us all. ? How could He not be? ?
He is the Source of our individual gifts and talents ??“ our love ??“
the true essence of who we are. ? We are each a unique expression
of God ??“ each created for an individual purpose.
When we are truly emotionally free ??“ when we are truly open??¦
are we then letting God in??¦or??¦
??¦ is that how we let Him out?
Many people talk about letting God into their lives, or going out
and finding Him.
Seems to me He??™s already there inside.
There may be things ??“ people ??“ institutions
that seem to be where
we ???find??? God, but maybe they are simply the mirror we have
needed to show us what was inside us all along.
Now, I don??™t claim to be any kind of theological scholar, and I
don??™t claim to be right. ? And you may not agree with any of this.
But this thought struck me as kind of cool ??“ and I hope it might
do so for you as well.
There is a lot of God inside you. ? In fact, you are 100% made up
of God stuff. ? You can choose to close yourself up and hoard it all,
or you can let it out and share it.
Maybe the caption should read, ???How long will you keep me locked
inside, yearning to be let out????
When you share your gifts and talents ??“ when you stop ???hiding your
light under a bushel???
??“ you are letting God out ??“ for all to see.
At this time of year, one of the favorite stories is that of the Little
Drummer Boy ??“ the waif moved to offer his talent on the drum as a
gift to the newborn child. ? In this season of gift-giving, what are your
unique gifts and talents to offer ??“ and are you doing so?
It is not an accident that you are here. ? As Marianne Williamson put
it, you were born to manifest the Glory of God that is within you ??“
and it??™s not just in some of us ??“ it is in all of us.
Yup ??“ it??™s already in there ??“ always has been, always will be. ? I hope
you will honor the rest of us with the gift of letting it out for all to see.

(UM) Do I really wanta??™ close them off to other experiences,

(UB) That the Universe has a plan,
(UA) That God wants
me to win in more than one area,
(TH) Otherwise,
(EB) Why would I have these different interests?
(SE) Do I think that God is that cruel?
(UE) He??™s gonna??™ give me a desire in this area of my life,
(UN) And a desire in that area of life,
(UM) A desire to be successful in both areas,
(CB) And then say, ???Ha-ha-ha, you can??™t have both,???
(UB) Is that really my image of God?
(UA) Or is it possible,
(TH) That the Universe can accommodate both,
(EB) If there??™s plenty of Olympic athletes,
(SE) Who have won gold medals,
(UE) Or various medals,
(UN) In different events,
(UM) If they can do it, so can I,
(CB) I can be successful in business,
(UB) And I can be successful in my personal life,
(UA) I
can do this,
(TH) There are people out there doing it,
(EB) And I choose to see that as a win-win situations,
(SE) For everyone in my life,
(UE) The more successful I am in my private life,
(UN) The more I have to bring to my customers,
(UM) And the more successful I am in business,
(CB) The greater the gift to the people in my life,
(UB) There is a balance,
(UA) And I can find it,
(TH) And I choose to know,
(EB) And I choose to believe,
(SE) That it??™s a balance I??™ll be very happy with,
(UE) I can have more than enough success in my private life,
