Hi Fellow Obsessed Writers: I was a little disappointed to receive a rejection to my submission to a teen focused website. I was so smug thinking that I had managed to capture their market that I was expecting an acceptance letter instead. I followed their guidelines exactly as outlined, the article's tone and style fit with the other articles and they needed articles on this particular subject. So what went wrong? I guess
I will never know for sure, the rejection letter stated that my article did not fit into their editorial needs - that statement is so wide open. I wish the editor would have been more specific so I could understand and learn from this rejection. I appreciate it when an editor gives me a reason for the rejection; I am relieved to hear if they already have something similiar on the back burner. At least I know that it is nothing to do with my article itself. However, these vague rejections that state the article is not suitable does nothing to help me learn from my mistakes or cast on any light on where the problem lies. I wish editors would
take a little more time when rejecting an article. If they did, I am sure the submissions they receive would be more suitable.
Sometimes, when I send an article and receive a rejection, the editor will include a quick note to explain why the article was rejected and encourage me to submit something else if they liked my writing style. I love when this happens and usually jump on this opportunity. Quite often I have been successful in selling the editor something else. If only the writing life was this easy all the time. After I have recovered from this rejection, I will have to reslant the article for another market. It was specifically tailored to the first market so it is not just a matter of sending
it out again. On the positive side, once it is reslanted for a broader market, it will be a good piece for me to put back into
circulation for a suitable market.
