DEEP THOUGHT OF THE MONTH: Is the hardness of butter proportional to the softness of bread? Welcome Fellow Obsessed Writer! The robins have returned and made their nest under my patio roof again this year. After last year’s events, we had decided that we would block the robin’s favorite perch because we felt that it wasn’t safe to have baby birds flopping around the grass with the dog around. Unfortunately, we never got the chance to do it
and before we knew it, mother robin had made her nest. Although I can’t see right in the nest, I am sure that she has laid her eggs because she has been perched on the nest all day and night for about a week. I am estimating that in within the next week or so, I should start to see some little heads popping out crying for their mother. Last year, it was near the end of June before the baby robins were ready for flight. On the writing front, my querying efforts have started to produce some results. I did get a little bogged down two weeks ago because
I had two articles to write and unfortunately came down with a bout of strep throat. Once I was feeling up to par, I managed to finish everything up and move on. Answer: It would be a good idea to ask for a deposit especially when dealing with private individuals. Unlike submitting work to a publication where payment policies are in
place, you will want some sort of assurance and gesture of good faith that you will be paid once you have completed the work. When you are negotiating the pay rate of the work to be completed, state your terms of payment upfront. A fifty percent deposit for a resume is acceptable. At the very least, if the customer reneges on the final payment, you have covered some of the time you have invested. I would recommend using Paypal or a similar service for payment instead of personal checks because with Paypal the customer has to have the money on hand in their account before they can
process a payment. With personal checks, there is always the risk of the check coming back NSF and then there are the service charges to contend with also. Before it went out life was going on as usual. At the last minute right before bed, my daughter decided to do homework that she realized she hadn’t completed. Earlier, I sent my son to bed—a process he drags out into a 2-3 hours ordeal; and I had just unceremoniously kicked my husband off the computer. The day was winding down, and I figured that I could use the time to accomplish my own
endeavors. The darkness told me otherwise. Things don’t always turn out the way we expect, and it is how we handle the unexpected that will often determine the toll it will take on our spirit. It was interesting to watch how each individual of my family responded to the blackout. My son, 7, huddled in our midst, wide eyed as he panicked at every sound. My daughter, 11, turned resourceful and scrounged up the candles we forgot existed. My husband got on his cell phone and tried to track down the cause of the blackout. Me? I slumped into a comfortable spot and relished the thick darkness knowing the power would soon be on and the unique experience would soon be over. I think my son had the worse of it because he was afraid. The mysterious darkness held imagined fears and disquieted his spirit. Fear can be crippling. It can be the reason why the query is left unwritten,
the idea not explored, or the book not written. Fear is like the anesthesia one gets before surgery, paralyzing the body and knocking out the mind’s awareness. Fear is real. Don't ignore it, at the same time recognize that it is there and find ways to diffuse its influence. Start off slowly, perhaps one sentence every 5 minutes, or one query every week. But start somewhere and then creep until the day that you can run victoriously. ------------ --------- ---------
