I'm sitting here, on my front porch, after watching the morning news. So many reports on protests over the immigration bill, it boggles the mind. On one side we have the vast majority of those protesting, the illegal immigrants. Sound bytes with all sorts of claims: they're not here to take any jobs, they just want a better life, and of course, racism. On the other side we have naturalized Americans and legal immigrants. These sound bytes include claims of nothing more than equality and fairness. Now, I'm sitting here trying to make sense out of all this. The first group, ILLEGAL immigrants, are wanting to stay in America, not to take jobs from anyone but rather to have a better life. If you're not here to find a job, how can you find a better life? Government handouts? Personally I've known families of Mexican immigrants, multiple generations living in one house, with only one legal person working. The rest of the family was receiving food stamps, Salvation Army handouts, any freebies they could get. Sounds like a better life to me: not working, getting handouts and not having to pay tax on anything. I also know of many places that hire illegal immigrants and migrant workers because there's no minimum wage requirement for someone that can't file a complaint about it. President Bush said that these illegals and migrants will do jobs that no American will do, and will do it for a fraction of the pay. I don't think this is completely accurate. I think it's more that BECAUSE these people will take far less pay, they're getting jobs that aren't being offered to American citizens. There are any number of American citizens currently looking for a job, any job, but have to deal with taxes and insurance and other things that illegals and migrants don't have to pay. This means they need more money to do the job. It's not that they're not WILLING to do it, it's that they would need two or three or four jobs to cover the cost of just one person. That doesn't even begin to pay for a family. Then there's the children that were born in this country, making them naturalized citizens. Their parents are illegal, though. With the new reform there's a chance these parents could be deported. Students in California actually walked out of school in protest because of this. There's an answer to it, of course, although they don't want to hear it. The second group is saying that's not fair. Legal immigrants, people that went through the system and came to America legally. For the most part, they're productive members of society working hard and paying taxes. Granted, not all people that come to this country are able to contribute. Heck, not all people that are born here are able to contribute! But at least these people took the time and trouble to go about the process legally. They didn't just turn up and expect the good life, they worked for it. I know becoming a citizen isn't easy. It isn't supposed to be. It's supposed to be something you truly want and will work towards, not your right just because you snuck through a fence in the middle of the night, or stowed away on a boat for two weeks to get here. Sure, those are hardships, but they're self-imposed. Where do I stand on all this? Hey, I'm all for immigration. Most of this country was settled by immigrants. Do it the right way, though. I've been paying taxes for the last 20 years, and I'm tired of my hard earned money going to pay for someone that legally isn't supposed to be here. We have enough citizens that aren't working, collecting unemployment and food stamps and welfare. We don't need more. Sure, give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses. You're all more than welcome. Just do it the right way. America asks in return only that you register. If you're here illegally, you're biting the hand that's feeding you. That hand may continue to feed you for now, but it can't last much longer. Right now in America, the "Minorities" outnumber the white Majority. Yet every day we hear how these Minorities want more and more given to them in the name of equality. To me, this is akin to war, slaughtering thousands or millions of people all in the name of your god, or in peace, or whatever other reason you tell yourself. Violence in the name of peace. More stuff in the name of equality. Is it any wonder people come here looking for a better life? The life of most illegal immigrants is better than most citizens now. And they're going to fight in order to keep it that way. |
