Trust the Program!

Food is the one substance an addict must use on a daily basis. If you are a drug addict you know that to be abstinent and in recovery you can't use you substance of choice. Likewise if you are an alcoholic you know that to pick up that first drink is to succumb to your disease. But food addiction is different in an important way. We must eat to survive and we do it 3-4 times per day seven days per week. This they say is like taking a tiger by its tail several times a day. It can be dangerous. We never know if we are going to get another chance at recovery!

How Can We Do It and Remain Abstinent?

There are certain foods we must avoid if we are to succeed at recovey. Now what happens so often is that the food addict looks at the forbidden foods and use rationalization to find a way to use these foods in their "diet". Let's use bread as an example since this is usually the food that gives so many of us problems.

We consult with friends, family, physicians and even dieticians and we find out from them that they think bread is ok to add to your "diet" and there's no reason to abstain from this healthy food product. So with a big smile on our face we add bread to our "diet" and go on thinking that we are abstinent. Let me argue this with you.

1) For people who are not addicts this line of thinking would be ok. For an addict this could be the beginning of relapse.

2) We know that "diets" do work for civilians (people who are not addicts). "Diet" is a term that refers to something that will eventually end. Food addicts are on food plans which we understand to mean as a lifestyle change.

3) Also if bread was not an issue for you, as I've heard countless times from numerous addicts, then why is it such an issue for you? Thou dost protest too much!

Your best thinking did not help you find recovery before so why do you trust it now. Some of us define insanity as repeating an action time after time and getting the same result and then repeating this same action and expecting a different result. That's like going to a doctor and getting a prescription and then telling your pharmacist that instead of that drug you wanted one that your friend recommended.

"Trust the program" is something you will hear in the rooms of OA. There is good reason for this so why not try it just for today!

The Playing Field Has Been Leveled--and it??™s Time for You to Play
by Michael Angier

In today??™s market and with today??™s technology it??™s never been easier to compete with established companies and well-known individuals. Never before has opportunity been so universally available.

Every day I see where someone has published their first book, launched a new company, starred in a new film or partnered with a large corporate entity. I like to read about people going for their dreams.

What may not be apparent is that these are everyday people. Those who have been successful in achieving their dreams are usually not any different than you and me.

Except for one thing--they went out and did it.

All too often, I see people hold back and not go after their dreams because they don??™t feel special enough. They erroneously believe that the people out there doing great things are privileged in some way. They believe them to have more knowledge, more connections or more inside information than they themselves do.

This is rarely true. With few exceptions, the ones out there making things happen simply had the courage and the urgency to do so. They believed in themselves and in what they were doing. Sometimes not a lot--but at least enough to get started.

They didn??™t wait for permission. They didn??™t wait until everything was perfect. No stars had to align. They didn??™t have it all figured out, but they acted nonetheless.

We live in a day and age where speed is of the essence. The product or service that gets out there first is usually the one to be the most successful. Wait until the product is perfect and you??™ll likely lose out. Getting it launched is paramount.

As I consult with individuals and senior executives of corporations, I find many viable ideas that get launched late or not at all because they??™re not feeling ready or worthy. There always seems to be something they??™re waiting for.

What??™s needed is courage. We must give ourselves permission to act. We don??™t need anyone else??™s permission. Boldness pays off. Initiative rules.

What are YOU waiting for? Where are you holding back? What deep-seated dream do you have within you? You deserve to fulfill your unique potential.

Remember that the people out their winning simply believe enough in themselves and in their dreams to take a chance. They??™re willing to take calculated risks--to bet on themselves and on their ideas.

What??™s the worst that can happen? There??™s no shame in failing. Failing is part of success and people forget about your failings in the bright light of your accomplishment. And they respect your courage.

I believe that everyone has a dream they long to achieve. But I think most of these dreams lie buried within and are never brought forth. And the world, as well as the one with the dream are worse off for it.

If you??™re not clear on what your dream is, take some action on any project that interests you. It doesn??™t matter which one. The process may very likely expose your true calling.

We find what we??™re looking for. If you??™re intent upon uncovering your dream you will do so. For some reason the Universe has a way of hanging on to answers until it knows we are serious.

There IS a way to accomplish your dreams. Find out what you need to learn. Who can help you? What??™s your biggest roadblock? What one thing can you do today to move you closer to your objective?

Take some action every day and you??™ll begin to see your dream unfold.

In doing so, you??™ll find yourself among those you admire and respect for pursuing their heart??™s desire. We??™ll be reading about YOU.

A Prayer for the Stressed
13997/29625_Stressed2.jpg

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

the courage to change the things I cannot accept,
and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those people I had
to kill today because they pissed me off.

And also, help me to be careful of the toes I step on
today as they may be connected to the ass that I may have
to kiss tomorrow.

Help me always to give 100% at work....
12% on Monday
23% on Tuesday
40% on Wednesday
20% on Thursday
5% on Friday

And help me to remember.....
when I'm having a really bad day,
and it seems that people are really trying to piss me off,
that it takes 42 muscles to frown and
only 4 to extend my middle finger and tell them to bite me!

Amen!
Body Image

Body image issues for women

Your body image is how you perceive, think and feel about your body. This may have no bearing at all on your actual appearance. For instance, it is common in Western nations for women to believe they are larger and fatter than they really are. Only one in five women are satisfied with their body weight. Nearly half of all normal weight women overestimate their size and shape. A distorted body image can lead to self-destructive behaviour, like dieting or binge eating. Approximately nine out of 10 young women have dieted at least once in their lives.

Self-destructive behaviour
A poor body image can promote an unhealthy lifestyle. The urge to diet or use other potentially dangerous weight loss methods (such as fasting, smoking or laxatives) is almost always prompted by feeling unhappy with body shape or size. It is well documented that even 'moderate' dieting increases the risk of developing an eating disorder amongst girls. If a woman feels self-conscious about her appearance, she may avoid exercising because it might mean exposing her body shape to the public eye. Alternatively, she might over exercise in a bid to lose weight quickly. Some studies indicate that a young woman's body image is the single largest influence on her self-esteem. If she thinks she looks unattractive or fat, her self-confidence drops and this can impact on other areas of her life.

A range of causes
Some of the factors that contribute to a negative body image include:

  • Being teased about appearance in childhood
  • Growing up with dieting parents, or one who was unhappy with their body shape
  • A cultural tendency to judge people by their appearance
  • Peer pressure among teenage girls to be slim, go on diets and compare themselves with others
  • Media and advertising images promoting thinness as the ideal
  • A tendency in women's media to push fad diets and weight loss programs
  • Well-meaning public health campaigns that urge people to lose weight.
Healthier choices
A negative body image develops over the course of your life, so changing it can take time and effort. Suggestions for improving your body image include:
  • Reflect on your experiences and try to unravel the development of your body image from childhood.
  • Talk about feelings and experiences with other women who have similar concerns.
  • Make a pact with yourself to treat your body with respect, which includes giving it enough food and rest.
  • Give yourself a break from women's magazines and the mass media for a while.
  • Try some form of physical activity purely for the fun of it, not as a means of weight loss.
  • Stop weighing yourself.
  • Change your goal from weight loss to improving your health.
  • Get informed by reading up on body image issues.
Type of help available
If you feel depressed about your body, or if you start bingeing or fasting, then professional help is a good idea. There are counsellors and psychologists trained in the areas of body image who can guide you in changing negative beliefs and behaviours. A chronic crash dieter might need assistance from a dietician or psychologist to introduce healthier ways of eating and of relating to and caring for your body.

Where to get help
  • Your doctor
  • Dietician
  • Counsellor
  • Anorexia & Bulimia Nervosa Foundation
Things to remember
  • Your body image is how you perceive, think and feel about your body.
  • Most women think they are larger and fatter than they actually are.
  • A negative body image is formed over a lifetime from many different influences, including family, peer group, media and social pressures.
