TEAM OF THE WEEK
Mens Indesit European Champions League Winners

GERMAN FRIEDRICHSHAFEN WITH SENSATIONAL CHAMPIONS’ LEAGUE VICTORY!

For the first time in its club history, VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN succeeded in going all the way in the Men’s Indesit European Champions’ League, beating 2005 titleholder TOURS VB (FRA) 3:1 in the final in Moscow. The bronze medal was won by Final Four host Dinamo MOSCOW who beat Italian Lube Banca Marche MACERATA in straight sets.

After six months of competition, Stelian Moculescu’s team have finally reached their long awaited goal of winning the Indesit European Champions’ League, beating some of Europe’s strongest teams along the way, i.e. Panathinaikos ATHENS (GRE), defending champion Sisley TREVISO (ITA) as well as Lube Banca Marche MACERATA (ITA) to name but a few of the total 24 participating teams. Following fourth place in 2005 in Thessaloniki, where the Germans hardly stood a chance in the Final Four, they stood their ground in Moscow, proving to Europe, respectively the world, that they are able to compete with the best. The last German victory in Europe's strongest club competition dates back 43 years when SC LEIPZIG from the then German Democratic Republic claimed the Champions Cup (former name of Champions' League) in 1964.

The Germans took the lead right away, showing determination and no fear. Even though they committed more errors, they attacked more efficiently than their French opponents (20-25), up ahead always MVP Jochen Sch?ps. TOURS led by six points in the second set (10-4) but couldn’t continue as FRIEDRICHSHAFEN pressurised them to commit more and more errors. Robert Hupka secured the 2:0 lead (24-26). 22-22 in the third when TOURS proved better nerves (1:2) but at 18-20 in the fourth set, the Germans were unstoppable, winning five out of the next six points (19-25). Top scorer of the match was Jochen Sch?ps with 30 points followed by team mate Robert Hupka and TOURS' Hichem Guemmadi with 19 points each.

Joao Jos? (captain VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN): "It's a huge surprise which no one expected. We came here determined to win but also to enjoy the matches. We have a young team but they are very experienced." Stelian Moculescu (head coach VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN): "It's sensational that our team was rewarded like this. I told my players not to think that it's the European Champions' League final but to play as if it were their last match in life. I'm very happy for my boys, they demonstrated a tremendous performance. I hope that Sch?ps and Tischer will take some of this dynamic motivation into the national team for the Olympic Qualification."

Final Four host Dinamo MOSCOW thanked the crowd of 12’200 spectators with a bronze medal after their 3:0 victory over last year’s CEV Cup winner Lube Banca Marche MACERATA. Top scorers of the match with 13 points each were Muscovite Matey Kaziyski and MACERATA’s captain Ivan Miljkovic.

Vladimir Alekno (head coach Dinamo MOSCOW): “Our fans expected us to get the bronze medal. They helped a lot in cheering us on. Our next aim is the national championship.” Alessandro Paparoni (spiker Lube Banca Marche MACERATA): “We weren’t fully in the match. It wasn’t a good way to leave the competition.” Fernando De Giorgi (head coach Lube Banca Marche MACERATA): “We played today’s match with the result of yesterday’s match on our mind.”

Bergamo Win the Champions League for a Fifth Time

Italian Foppapedretti BERGAMO claimed their fifth Indesit European Champions’ League title in eleven years, beating Dinamo MOSCOW from Russia in a rollercoaster final which was decided in the tiebreak set. The bronze medal was won by Spar TENERIFE Marichal (ESP) who beat Final Four host Vol?ro ZURICH (SUI) in straight sets.

In presence of numerous presidents of national volleyball federations and clubs, as well as well-known names of the volleyball sporting field, such as former Polish women’s team head coach Andrzej Niemczyk and head coach of the Dutch national ladies’ team Avital Selinger, the final day of the Women’s Indesit European Champions’ League 2006/07 came to an end in Zurich’s Hallenstadion, having fulfilled the high expectations with over 6’000 spectators present during the Final Four weekend.

Foppapedretti BERGAMO from Italy is the new Indesit European Champions’ League Champion, following in PERUGIA’s footsteps who won the title in Cannes (FRA) last year. BERGAMO started off better, putting the Muscovites under constant pressure, in particular German national player Angelina Gr?n and Italian Francesca Piccinini (25-14). However, MOSCOW stood more solid in block throughout the second set and had more success in attack, managing to level to 1:1(19-25). However, the Russians couldn’t hold the rhythm into the third set committing more errors than the opposition, whilst BERGAMO attacked mainly with Gr?n and Piccinini, blocked with Gr?n and Poljak, and Eleonora Lo Bianco not giving up one ball, so that the 2:1 Italian lead was guaranteed (25-14). But MOSCOW won the fourth set, forcing a tiebreak. The fifth and deciding set was nothing for weak nerves. Both teams had their chances, swapping the lead until at 10-10 BERGAMO strove ahead (14-10) securing their second Champions’ League ball (15-11).

Spar TENERIFE Marichal from Spain’s CanaryIsland seized bronze this year after they had won Europe’s most prominent title once in 2004, also finishing third in 2002 and 2005. TENERIFE took early leads in each set and knew how to increase these little by little, demonstrating a compact attacking play and strong nerves when the going got tough. Most prominent in attack were Cuban Ana Ibis Fernandez, US-American Tom Logan as well as Turkish Neslihan Demir who was the best scorer of the match with 19 points. When TENERIFE seemed safe with a six-point lead in the third set (20-14), their Swiss opponents returned with US-American Ogonna Nnamani being successful on three consecutive blocks (20-18). Still, the experienced players of head coach Rafael Prado didn’t let loose, finally securing the bronze medal after just over an hour of play.

Gregoria Dorta (captain Spar TENERIFE Marichal): “It was a very nice demonstration for the public. We played better than yesterday and it was very important that we finished third in the highest club competition.” Rafael Prado (head coach Spar TENERIFE Marichal): “Maybe ZURICH was a little more tired than us as they played five sets yesterday, two more than we did. We were mentally on a better level than our opponents. Whilst the whole team performed poor yesterday, including myself, today was different: we played more as a team.” Robin Ah Mow-Santos (captain Vol?ro ZURICH): “I have no idea why we played how we did. I have absolutely no answers and can only say that I’m sorry to our fans.” Velibor Ivanovic (head coach Vol?ro ZURICH): “We didn’t succeed in showing the same strong performance as in Saturday’s semi-final against MOSCOW. The players were empty and had no fighting spirit left. The supporters were the best today.”
