2007 Sandbanks Classic Biggest Yet
 |
For the first time, this year's Premier Sandbanks Beach Volleyball Classic will include the British Junior Championships for teams aged under 18, 16 & 14.
More than 30 courts will by erected on Sandbanks Beach to cope with an anticipated 500 players form all over the UK.
|
| Wessex Volleyball Club chairman Geoff Allen, is confident the club will beat last year's total when more than 180 teams entered what has become the country's biggest beach volleyball tournament. Said Geoff: "We are expecting up to 500 players on the beach on Saturday and are laying on the extra courts to cope with the demand. Once again, Sandbanks is going to be the biggest tournament on the UK Tour."
The Sandbanks Classic takes place on 14th and 15th July and is the first Grand Slam event on the 2007 Volleyball England Beach Tour. It will attract more than 80 top UK teams including members of National Coach, Matt
Grinlaubs' England squad from their training base at Bath University. | |
Matt's players have been testing their skills against the world's best in Europe, so UK teams can expect a high level of competitive play.
Closing date for entries is the 30th June 2007, more info and entry details at:

Gold Coast Ocean Fest King & Queen of the Beach
| The rest of the country appeared to have been awash with strong winds and rain but in the small North Devon beach resort of Croyde, it was the usual sunny weather for the final day of the 2007 Gold Coast Ocean Feat with the final rounds of the Croyde King and Queen of the beach tournament.
The event takes the form of pools of four players, where you will play with everyone in your pool, the person who wins the most matches wins the pool and goes forward to the next pool.
|
Queen of the beach winner Denise Austin (in red) with partner Helen Brown and shoot out finalist Julia Werdich with partner Lianne Herbert |
The two most succesful players will then play one single shoot out game to see who wins the title. The top placed person chooses who they want to play the shoot out with first, it can be anyone from their division except a partner who they have played the last three events with. The winner of the shoot out takes the title of King or Queen of the beach.
| All matches at this event are played with the side out scoring system, tournament director Denise says: "Yes we are going to stick with that until I am not the TD anymore and some younger person wants to change it, I like to keep this format in memory of what a great game we used to have". Kirton Revolution - 2007 Exeter Coaver Open Champions
Kirton Revolution from Crediton, were victorious at this summers Exeter Coaver Open, held Sunday 10th June in a gloriously sunny Exeter. All of their initial pool matches were won, sending them through at the top of the group. The competition stiffened up a little in the next round of 3 teams, with all teams playing each other twice. A couple of these matches were much closer affairs with the winning margin only 2 or 3 points. The final was played against P-Didn't-Y which was a team made up from Exeter Heat Juniors. Kirton came out of the traps flying, building up a lead from the word go which was not caught.
Kirton's MVP for the tournament was 'Air ' Vic Ives who, in true style, performed at both ends of the spectrum this tournament with some powerful hitting and inspired, all be it a little unorthodox blocking.
All of this lead to Kirton Revolution winning all 10 of their matches on the day. A fun day was had by all and Kirton wish to express their thanks to all involved in the organising and the running of the event and also a very special thanks to Henry's Bar in Exeter for the shirt sponsorship.
Thanks

Beach Training Restarts at Exmouth
|
Tuesday evening beach volleyball training sessions have restarted at Exmouth. They originally started a few years ago with a group of indoor players trying to play on sand. Since then things have progressed, a couple of us have now completed the beach coaching course at Croyde and Brighton, we have two players who now play regularly on the beach circuit and equipment is now more readily available.
|
We would like to see it develop into a training / mini league evening, if it does then we have also been promised more equipment. We currently use the area by the Octagon, opposite the "Bath House" pub where we also hold the post training meetings. This has easy access, sheltered seating and it's free to park.
These are open sessions for anyone to attend (no previous experience required) just turn up, for more details either email me direct or you can checkout the next session via the beach training web page on the Torexe web site at: Beach Training Times
|
The beach also has a very useful live streaming web cam, which you can also control, very useful for checking out the last minute weather conditions and on street parking issues before heading down to the beach. Beach Webcam
Unfortunately you can't quite see the area we use for training, the nearest is position "Sea View" (camera position 6).
|
| In a separate project, East Devon District Council (who own the beach) are erecting two permanent beach courts, these are currently under construction further down the beach in the no swimming area, where the Exmouth Beach Tournament is normally held.

NESTEA European Championship Tour 2007 German Masters results
| In the German Masters, the third stop of the NESTEA European Championship Tour 2007, the Austrians Berger/Nowotny seized the men’s gold over Germans Klemperer/Koreng, whilst Dutch De Kogel-Kadijk/Mooren beat the German ladies’ team Pohl/Rau in the final. | |
Berger and Nowotny have claimed their first title this year following their fifth place at the Austrian Masters. Although the Germans David Klemperer and Eric Koreng beat their final opponents from Austria in the third round of the Main Draw (2:1), they didn’t manage to repeat this victory in the final match, losing 0:2 (29-31, 14-21) despite having four set points in the first set. Nevertheless, Klemperer/Koreng remain European Ranking Leaders thanks to their successful final rankings of the Masters (fourth place in the Austrian Masters, bronze medal in Russia and runner-up in Germany).
| The women’s European Ranking is led by Germans Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler, the runner-up of last year’s Under 23 European Beach Volleyball Championships and 2007 titleholder of the Russian Masters, who finished third in Hamburg after having lost the semifinal to Stephanie Pohl and Okka Rau, the defending champions. | |
Pohl/Rau weren’t able to defend their title though as they were beaten by Dutch De Kogel-Kadijk/Mooren 15-12 in the tiebreak set. The next stop on the NESTEA European Championship Tour is the 100’000 Euro Swiss Masters from 5-8 July 2007 in Lucerne.
