Hi all, more news from the web.
One problem with sticking anything on the web, is that its available to anyone in the world. The number of hits on our match video page has recently gone through the roof as more and more people from around the world discover the page.
This is unfortunately not good for my download limits and as this is primarily a UK only service, the video page has now been moved to a new location. All links to the page and videos via the web site, newsletter, RSS news feed and tool bar will all still work but if you have previously booked marked the page, it will no longer work.
Please always follow the links on the web site to see and view all available videos.

Volleyball Coaching Day
Essex Volleyball Association is hosting a coach development day including:
- A course for the introduction of volleyball at Key Stage 3 (age under 14).
- A Sitting Volleyball Workshop for any coach looking to develop this version.
The day will start with a Volleyball England accredited Mini Volley course which is aimed at teachers and coaches looking to work in schools and communities. No previous volleyball experience is necessary and course material is included.
After lunch those attending in the morning plus anyone with a volleyball coaching qualification can join a workshop that will show how Sitting Volleyball can be introduced and developed. Sitting Volleyball is an inclusive team sport which allows male and female players of all abilities and disabilities to play together. It is also a Paralympic sport.
Sunday 13th January 2008, 9.30-1.30 Mini Volley coaching course (accredited) / 2.00-5.00 Sitting Volleyball Workshop (attendance certificate) / Lunch will be provided. GB volleyball team floundering in Flanders
Daily Mail reports on the British team in Holland, Mike Dickson (19/11/2007)
The quest for homegrown glory at the 2012 Olympics is taking British sport to the strangest of places — for example, the foot of the Dutch professional volleyball league. There you will find, occupying basement position in the table, Club Martinus — unremarkable except for the fact that the long established Amsterdam outfit is, in fact, the British national team.

Referees course, Bolton
Dear all, the Greater Manchester Volleyball Association are running a Grade IV Referees Course.

Under Pressure in the Dome.
|
The Dome at Taunton's Richard Huish College, is one of the more unusual volleyball venues but it's fast becoming a centre for the sport in the area.

This was my first visit to the Dome, which is also the home venue of the "Volleyball Taunton" club who play in the Exeter & District
League and moved to the new facility last year.
Unlike your regular college sports hall, which often takes some searching to find the right building on a large site at night, the Dome can be seen like a giant space ship
glowing in the dark.

Access to the dome is via a revolving door (which also stops the air from escaping), as soon as you are in, the surprises continue, first it's very white and bright, then you notice the noise. As well as the general background fan noise, every hit or bounce of the ball reverberates around the Dome, hopefully you can hear this on
the video's below but you soon get used to it.
Next up is the safety talk for all new visitors, the Dome is a bit like a giant bouncy castle, it's kept up by air, if the fans stop due to a power outage etc, the Dome will slowly collapse and the weight of the material could trapping people inside. To avoid this a pressure sensor constantly monitors the air pressure inside and if it drops below a certain level, the alarms and orange flashing light will go off.
Evacuating the Dome is also slightly different to your regular sports hall. To avoid a sudden
loss of air pressure and consequent collapse of the roof when the fire doors are opened, the procedure is for everyone to
congregate by their nearest fire exit. When everyone is ready, all the fire doors can be opened at the same time, thereby not trapping anyone inside.
As there are no walls, all the lights are free standing and face upwards, excellent news for setters but you do get a ball shadow on the roof near the side of the Dome. Match balls are fine but the lighter junior volleyballs can get affected by the air flow from the fans around the Dome. Occasionally the ball does hit the roof, it also gets lost down behind the side boards.
Changing rooms and shower facilities are located in an adjacent building, which means a short trip in the open between the two buildings. As well as Volleyball Taunton, the venue is also used by British Colleges Sports (BCS) for their regional volleyball rounds and the College is also starting a Volleyball
Academy.

Note: In the Exeter & District League (www.edva.org.uk), all five sets are played in each match (hence the 1-4
score line), as well as giving two hours of volleyball, the five sets also gives teams the opportunity to rotate and include more players. Two points are award for the match win, plus a point for each set won, thereby losing teams have the opportunity to pick up one or two
bonus points from each match.

The Nestea tour has been confirmed for Blackpool.
BVUK helped Blackpool make its successful bid to host the English Masters of the NESTEA European Championship Tour in 2008 and 2009.
| The prestigious series attracts some the finest beach players from all over Europe and is the perfect showcase for the sport as the UK moves towards the London Olympics in 2012.
The NESTEA European Championship Tour English Masters 2008 takes place on September 11-14 on Blackpool's new Promenade Headlands and will feature finals played under floodlights to coincide with the town's famous Illuminations.
The European Tour, around the European Championships, was established in 2003 and visits five to seven countries each year, so competition to host an event is fierce. Blackpool's successful bid means it joins an exclusive group of European locations which will host the prestigious Tour in 2008.

Supported and sanctioned by the English Volleyball Association, the English Masters 2008 will feature up to 120 top male and female teams, including Britain's top pairings. Significantly more than 100 hours of TV footage of the event will be broadcast across more than 180 countries worldwide.
The event follows BVUK's staging of the UK's first FIVB International Exhibition Tournament which took place on Blackpool's iconic promenade in 2007. It was also the first international Beach Volleyball tournament to be held in the UK under floodlights.
To host the English Masters 2008, Blackpool will build a 2,000 seat stadium on the promenade along with extensive facilities for players, VIPs, medical support and the world's media.
Constructing a Centre Court plus four practice and qualifying courts on the promenade will require around 1,000 tons of sand form the resort's famous beach. A total of some 130 staff will be recruited to run the event which will be managed by Beach Volleyball UK Ltd working with a Swiss based team from GSM, the company that markets the tour events across Europe on behalf of the CEV.
The CEV or Conf?d?ration Europ?enne de Volleyball, is the governing body for volleyball in Europe, while beach volleyball events in England are sanctioned by the English Volleyball Association, the sport's English governing body. Blackpool will host the event in 2008 and 2009, and has an option for 2010.

Hike Cuba Fundraiser
Hello team Volleyball, I'm sure that you all appreciate the wonderful work Robbie Barrett has done (in conjunction with others) in getting the sitting volleyball team off the ground and he now needs a bit off support from us.
Firstly we must all make sure he doesn't go overboard with his recuperation and recovery! Nurse Hung, is hanging in there in a valiant effort to keep her patient on the straight and narrow, not an easy task! To help the invalid ease back into society we have organised a leisurely trekking holiday for him across Cuba. He has offered to raise money for the Douglas Bader Foundation and help other unfortunates like himself and other disabled people! Profile: Robbie Barrett, National GB Sitting Volleyball Squad Captain.
As a Below Knee Amputee, I have been involved in disabled sport now for over 20 years originally as an Athlete, then as a coach and again now I find myself involved as both an athlete and a manger. In terms of career, I was a sprinter originally and then moved into Pentathlon events after competing in Seoul. National and European Record holder in 100m, 200m, 400m, and Long Jump, in my time and National Champion in 100m, 200m, 400m, Long Jump, Shot Putt, Discus, etc.
As national champion I was invited along with other athletes to represent GB in Seoul in 1988, were I managed to be involved in one of the greatest races ever seen for amputees, the final of the 100m. All 3 places Gold, Silver and Bronze broke the World Record at the time in a superb final event; I walked away with Bronze position with a new British Record and of course like the 1st and 2nd places broke the current World Record at the time. Same thing happened in the 200m, with the same 3 athletes taking Bronze, Silver and Gold.

In Barcelona in 1992, I represented GB, in Pentathlon, having taken 4th place at the World championships the previous year I had high hopes of being in a medal position. However I tore a hip flexor in the first event (Long Jump) and this put paid to any chance I had of a medal.
In the past few years I have also re-entered the sporting arena here in the UK, helping to build both a local Sitting Volleyball Club (East London Lynx Sitting Volleyball Club), of which I am the manager, and a National GB Squad capable of vying for a medal in 2012, of which I am currently the Captain.
I had a heart attack on October 3rd 2007 due to cholesterol build up and had the unusual pleasure of clearing the blocked arties in a 3 hour Angioplasty operation, and having 7 Stents fitted to keep those arteries which were thinning so badly now open. The Doc referred to it as having a full metal Jacket fitted. I feel well on the way to recovery and have been working back to full activity all be it more slowly than I of course would like but I’m getting there. As part of my recovery Kiera has set me a goal of hiking across Cuba with her group of other fund raisers and it would be great if I could raise the funding to do that. However I haven’t really left my self a lot of time to get the funding together so any aid you can give would of course be greatly received.
