City of Wolverhampton and University of Birmingham
We are delighted to announce that City of Wolverhampton and University of Birmingham Volleyball Club have agreed to merge and develop volleyball in their respective cities together and ensure Division One volleyball for aspiring local young players for the future.
City of Wolverhampton have enjoyed competitive success in recent years, winning both the League and KO Cup two years ago, and finishing league runners up in the 2007-2008 season. University of Birmingham VC has achieved notable successes in the last year: runner-up at the CCPR award, achieving Volley 3 accreditation and securing funds to develop junior volleyball.
The University club offers volleyball at all the standards, from recreational to Local and National League. Despite the origins, half of the club members are community players, whose number has been rising year by year.
Sally Jones is looking forward to start the new challenge and especially she wants to repeat the past successes. The international coaching staff are looking to recruit players for the first division women’s team. If you are an experienced player and you want to be part of a big club, you can email at
info@buvc.co.uk.

Sitting VB Update
As most of you know a great result from last weekend in the tournament at Canterbury. Lynx beat the Kingdom of Saudi Arabian team in 3 straight games. You can read the article kindly written by Rob Richardson on VE's website later in the week. There was also a fantastic evening of volleyball at Morgan Stanley on the Monday evening were the Saudi team fired from the defeat at the weekend really wanted to take the Lynx Scalp.
We of course denied them once again, proving the strength and depth of the club. Our thanks to Tom Middleton and Simon Nelson for their organizational skills and making both tournaments absolutely superb. Again a
separate article from the Monday evening will appear on VE's website shortly, and
I will try to publish to the LVA site in London ASAP.
My sincere thanks to all members of the club who attend both tournaments and helped to make them such great occasions and drive the sport further. I know you all had a great time, well played to everyone who
managed to attend.

Canterbury Beach Volleyball Centre
Contentious [four court] beach volleyball complex gets the go-ahead. Ambitious plans that could put a Kent city on the map as a leading venue for beach volleyball have been given the green light.
County councillors have approved an application for a beach volleyball complex on the Victoria Recreation Ground, Canterbury, despite protests from some residents that it meant the loss of a valuable open space. By political editor Paul Francis

Junior Beach Championships 2008
A number of new junior beach events have been added to the calendar this year, first
up was the "SW Junior Beach Championship" at Exmouth, the venue was
chosen due to it's central location and easy of access for teams across the
area. The winners of this event will also be invited to compete in the new end
of season "SW Junior Beach Final" at the Windfest festival at
Sandbanks in September. These two new events are part of the junior beach
development program in the area which will lead up to a full SW Junior Beach
Tour program in 2009.

number of pool rounds (best of three sets matches), with the top two teams from each

GB Report from Russia
Upon arrival we were greeted by "Andrei and Olga" who were part of the Leningradka Volleyball Club. Leningradka is a member of the 'Super League" of Russia and last year finished 5th. It trains out of the Dynamo training hall and plays mainly in the Platonov Volleyball Academy training hall. Both are close to each other which is also used by Lodaga, their second team which place 7th in the National League. Both have the 'typical' Russian players - tall, lanky, thin and well skilled. Jump serve, high ball attack and strong block are typical of the style of game that greets you on the court. All players on both
teams are 'professional' - meaning that they are well paid and their only job is volleyball.
Andrey, our host, was saying that there are 10 volleyball academies, similar to the Platonov Academy in the St. Petersburg area. Each Academy has about 300 students of various ages which translates into
3000 athletes training towards a higher level of volleyball. All the clubs have younger generations attached to them. There are 42 University aged teams that play in the St. Petersburg league and aim
to take part in the Russian Championships. The company that sponsors Leningradka is mainly that owned by its coach Kashin (it is a holding company of banks, communication, bedroom and kitchen supplier, etc.). He became interested in volleyball, eventually got into coaching, enjoyed it and now has bought his own team to challenge for the Super League title. Their goal is to finish in the top 3 this year. They have 3 foreign players, one being a Cuban (Fernandez), one from the Netherlands (their starting center blocker - Vizer) and one other- each receive over a '6 figure' salary. Additionally, they have two players on the Russian Olympic Team in Beijing.

SWVA Junior Beach
Web Site
As Junior Beach Volleyball continues to develop
across the Southwest, the region has launched a new web site and plans for a
2009 beach league. You can access the site via the main www.swva.org.uk
site or direct at: http://www.swva.org.uk/beach/index.html
Our aim over the winter is to add more information about junior beach volleyball and what’s going on in the SW, to create a SW Junior Beach Tour for 2009 and to cement links between all the clubs that are providing junior beach volleyball coaching by becoming SWVA satellite centres for beach volleyball and to establish SW squads for junior beach volleyball training.
The SWVA will be inviting clubs who are already working with junior beach players to become SW Satelite training
centres (STC), Bath University and The Academy of Beach Sports in Croyde have already come on board as recognised centres and its hoped that there will be more to follow.
The STCs will provide junior coaching on a regular basis during the summer and the STC coaches will be invited to take part in the SW Junior Beach Squad training session with the Squad Coaches to exchange and develop information about beach volleyball coaching.
SW Junior Beach Tour (SWJBT)
Denise Austin in Croyde for the female squads and Vince Joyce in Sandbanks will be leading the SW Junior Beach Volleyball Squads. For 2009 there will be invitational camps held where possible to fit around the playing schedule to assist in the development of the junior beach athletes taking part in the SWJBT. For 2010 players who have performed well on the SWJBT will form the SW Squads and the squad will look towards developing their playing experience through out the UK and Europe.
SW Junior Beach Tour Over the winter the aim is to add more information about junior beach volleyball and what's going on in the SW, to create a SW Junior Beach Tour for 2009 and to cement links between all the clubs that are providing junior beach volleyball coaching by becoming SWVA satellite centres for beach volleyball and to establish SW squads for junior beach volleyball training.
So please keep this page bookmarked to keep up to date on what's happening on the beach volleyball scene in the south west in the near future.
The SWVA will be starting the SWJBT in summer 2009, it will run on similar lines to the VEBT with ranking points, Championship Race winners, Open and Grand Slam events, Triple Crown Winners, SW Championships and SW Finals.
It is hoped the tour will run at the following venues, Barry Island, Bath Uni, Weston-Super-Mare, Croyde, Perranporth, Exmouth, Weymouth and Sandbanks. With some of the larger more established events holding Grand Slams and The Animal Windfest
at Sandbanks, holding the Finals. Once the VEBT dates have been finalised the SWJBT dates will be announced.
