Tournament
Required
I am the head coach of Girls U17 volleyball squad. we are a fairly good team and we are planning our
schedule for the upcoming year. We are looking to travel overseas to play in a tournament sometime in late
December (Christmas time). I was wondering if you know of any volleyball tournaments in
Britain or in Europe that we could perhaps enter and also give the girls a chance to travel to see
Europe as none of them has had the opportunity to travel outside of north America.
Please forward to me any information you might have.
Thank you,

Development
Position N. Somerset
I have some funding to organise 8 weeks of volleyball for 11-19 year olds as part of the North Somerset extending activities programme.
The 8 weeks need to be during term time but must be after school hours on evenings or
weekends. If successful there is potential to extend past the initial 8 weeks.
We were planning to run it in Portishead although we can change the venue if absolutely necessary.
The volleyball will be one of 25 different activities being organised, a programme of all the new activities will be advertised in schools and the community via extended schools co-ordinators, ssco's, youth service etc.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Holland and Italy dominate medals podium on final day of Beach Volleyball
7th September 2008, Italy's Francesco Giontella and Paolo Nicolai have retained their title as World under 21 Champions at the SWATCH FIVB Beach Volleyball in Brighton.
They successfully beat the Dutch no. 5 seeds, Alexander Brouwer and Christian Varenhorst in two straight sets. Speaking after the game Giontella said, "The match went really well for us in the first set and at the beginning of the second set. However they really made us work in the last part of the game. They played really well. It was a bit warmer today and dry so it was easier to play." He continued, "The whole tournament has been amazing. We won all of our matches in two straight sets. My partner,
Nicolai, has been great, so many good blocks." Nicolai was also awarded a gold beach volleyball, courtesy of Nivea Sun, for being the 'Best Blocker' of the competition and a limited edition SWATCH watch for being the 'Most Outstanding Player' of the tournament. See

A Personal note from the UK school Games
This was my first time at the UK School game and I was expecting a general run of the mill tournament but I was wrong. This was a fantastic event, is this one of the best kept secrets in UK volleyball?
If it ever gets out just how good this event is, the organisers will need a much larger venue and
bigger grandstands next year.
So what made this event different, the hall and courts were all set up appropriately, the official and the event management teams all did their jobs as you would expect.
Accommodation, transport, meals, media all worked as expected, which just leaves the
teams and their supporters. The players, coaching staff and supporters all
worked hard and produced some excellent volleyball, each team was loudly cheered on by
the large number of supporters, making a cup final atmosphere throughout the event.
One of the coaches summed up his experience to me as "the tournament was the best volleyball experience I have had in both my playing and coaching days. I did not think that last year's tournament in Coventry could be topped, but this year at Bath far exceeded our expectations. I am privileged to have been part of such a wonderful
event".
While at the venue, I checked out a couples of the other sports taking place, the table tennis was, well
quiet and down on the athletic track, you could still hear the volleyball crowd,
so I didn't waste too much time there either. I was also at the main venue entrance when a group of
spectators (just arriving) were asking the stewards, which is the best sport to
watch, they all said volleyball.
Is this one of the best kept secrets in UK volleyball? 2009
Cardiff 3rd-6th Sept, see you there. Dave.Reece@VolleyballNewsletter.com

This week is full of events in the UK Beach Volleyball scene: Blackpool is to host the NESTEA European Championship Tour English Masters Beach Volleyball over the weekend and a brand new website is having its global launch in the UK:

If you happen to have pictures, videos of all those places you can also upload them to the global database for everyone to enjoy.
The 3 players who contribute the most by adding the higher number of ?hot spots? before 30th Oct 2008 will get a nice?n?round surprise from the editorial team. Don't forget to leave your name/alias (email) in the SUBMIT form so we can track you back !

CEV Blackpool
Many English will rub their eyes with wonder this week when they go along the promenade in Blackpool and ask themselves what is going on in the sand there. The Beach Volleyball pros of the NESTEA European Championship Tour are guests in the beach resort ? the first time the tour will serve and spike on the British Isle. 100,000 Euros are at stake that will be divided up between the athletes - but there is more on the line for the sport in general. It is a great chance to gain reputation. An endeavour that will not be easy: After all, Beach Volleyball has not been one of the most popular leisure time activities in England so far. From

Exeter
University
We also have a new club website this year, would
it be possible to get it put on the website? the address is http://www.au.ex.ac.uk/~volleyball/
The Exeter University Volleyball Club (E.U.V.C.) welcomes players of all standards; whether you?ve never played before or can play like a pro! During the upcoming season we will have frequent club and team training sessions which are not only a great laugh but focus on improving our game too. Anyone of any ability can join our club and improve their skills.
EUVC enter numerous competitions including Men & Women BUCS, local leagues, outdoor and beach tournaments. Our team games are highly exciting and as volleyball is one of the smaller clubs at Exeter, there is a great social team bond that develops throughout the year. We arrange frequent socials which keeps our friendships and team spirit strong (including road trips for BUCS competitions!) Come along and give volleyball a try!
We look forward to welcoming you to EUVC.

Peter Bakare / Age: 19 / Town: London
Q. Describe a typical day/week in your sporting life / what do you do in terms of sport/training each week?
I train three times a day and for a whole weekend once a month. On top of that I train twice a day with weight training on odd days.

The rest you get after a training session, you don?t appreciate pleasure until you go through that pain, also the health benefits you get.
Q. What is your greatest sporting achievement and most embarrassing moment?
It would have to be, being chosen to train and play for Great Britain. The most embarrassing was at the Europeans for England Juniors when I was caught sleeping - the ball came towards me and for some reason I let it pass me before I reacted. A funny but embarrassing moment.
Q. What has been your greatest sporting challenge?
It would have to be getting picked for the final 12 to go to Denmark for the Europeans. There were many players in my positions so i had to work hard to get in the team.
