Do you know how many of your emails get through to your recipients? You probably get a few bounces now and again - the bigger your list is, the more bounces you will get. But do you know WHY those emails bounced? When an email bounces, for whatever reason, you get a message along with an error code telling you why the email failed to reach the recipient. Have you ever examined one of these messages carefully - there's a lot of information there, but it's not always easy to decipher! There are two types of bounces, synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous bounces happen straight away and asynchronous bounces are delayed by a few hours or even a few days. But the messages you receive with each bounce vary greatly depending on the mail server sending the message to you and also the bounce category, ie whether they are hard bounces or soft bounces. Hard bounces are permanent. They can be caused by invalid email addresses (maybe a typo, a fake username or the domain might not exist. These are typically identified by a 3 digit number beginning with a '5' eg '550'. Soft bounces mean there is a temporary failure. The email is recognized by the recipient's mail server but is returned due to situations such as the recipient's mailbox being full or if the email account has been abandoned. These bounces are typically identified by a 3 digit code beginning with a '4' eg '421'. Bounce messages are inconsistent, so don't delete what appear to be hard bounces before retrying them at least once. It takes time and effort to analyze your bounces but it will help to keep your list clean.
