Copyright © AdMistress 2007 ============ How many times have you sent and email to someone expecting a reply... but you didn't get one? These days, email filtering is commonplace, so you expect some of your emails not to be delivered to your recipients - it's a sad fact of Internet life. So whitelisting instructions are everywhere explaining what you should do to ensure email from people you WANT to communicate with arrive in your inbox. A whitelist is simply a list of domains or email addresses from which an email blocking program (spam filter) will allow emails to be received. Conversely, a blacklist is a list of domains or email addresses that are blocked from sending email to you - they can still send you emails but these won't be delivered to your inbox. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will most likely have a whitelist and a blacklist of certain domains and you can also request that email from a particular domain or sender are added to their whitelist so your ISP will let them through, and you can also set up your own whitelist, and blacklist, in whichever email program you use. But... even after all this filtering, you'll find that some legitimate email messages still don't get through. You might have subscribed to a newsletter and waited and waited for an issue to arrive, but it never did. Why? Greylisting. As its name suggests, this is a cross between whitelisting and blacklisting. If your email server is using greylisting (not all of them do) then what happens is that if an email is sent to you from a sender that it doesn't recognize, it temporarily rejects it. If you've whitelisted an email address or domain because you WANT to receive email from someone, you would expect it to arrive wouldn't you? Not necessarily! If a legitimate email is sent to you and it is greylisted, the server that sent the email will try to send it again later. Most bulk email tools used by spammers will not retry to send email, so this should ensure delivery of the email, even though it may be late - anything from ten minutes to several hours. The problem here is that some email servers treat this temporary error as a permanent rejection, so instead of resending the email they treat it as undeliverable and bounce it back to the sender. No method can be 100% effective in stopping spam OR in letting legitimate email thorough. ===================================== Clue # 335 - Don't be too quick to judge why your emails are not replied to.
