There are hundreds of online directories that accept website submissions - some are free and some require payment, but you must choose which directories you submit to carefully. A good rule of thumb is to submit to directories with a PageRank of 4 or more. Do consider lower ranked directories if they are directly related to your niche. Many directories are filled with hundreds of listings per category - avoid them! Too many websites listed on a single page will not result in very much PageRank value being passed to your site. Some directories try to preserve their PageRank by not sharing it with the sites they list. They may use: - Scripted links (e.g. PHP, CGI) - most search engines might give credit for the link to the directory rather than to your site. - The "Nofollow" attribute in links or meta tags - search engines will 'not follow' your link. - The robots.txt file - can be used to block major search engines from accessing certain folders or files. These directories are not really worth submitting to. Some directories will approve your links the same day but others could take weeks or even months - so be patient. Before you submit your site to a directory, you have to carefully prepare for your directory listing. Here's a list of things you can do - type them out and save them, then you can adjust them to suit the instructions given for each directory: - Create a directory title including your targeted keywords. - Write a 250 character description and a 500 character description of your website making sure to include your main keywords. - Choose the correct category for your listing. This is very important as it improves your chance of being accepted and is also good for SEO purposes. - Prepare a list of keywords (separated by commas) that you think people would use to find your type of website.
